First off let me say I'm new to root. I rooted my evo last night by following the 2.2 root video guide. Now I'm looking for a rom and kernal that's right for me so please be patient with a noob.
Can someone explain to me (in noob terms please) how to install a rom and kernal. If there is a video guide that would be great. I assume all roms will come with the same files so once I learn how to do it I should be set.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Please use the search tool. Most roms in the development forum say how to also.
And check the sticky in the same forum.

PEOPLE USING AMONRA RECOVERY THE ROM AND KERNEL MUST BE ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD. ONLY ON CLOCKWORK RECOVERY CAN YOU SCAN THROUGH FOLDERS TO FIND YOUR ROM/KERNEL. SOME PEOPLE SWITCH RECOVERYS WITHOUT REALIZING SO TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE I SUGGEST PUTTING ALL ROMS/KERNELS ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD. ALSO, WHILE ON AMONRA RECOVERY TO GO BACK A MENU/SCREEN YOU MUST PRESS VOLUME DOWN AND VOLUME UP AT THE SAME TIME.
1.) To install a new ROM you first have to download the said ROM. (Obviously.) Second of all, you have to find the kernel you want to use. Most ROMs come with kernels but you can still download the kernel of your choice.
2.) Once you have the ROM and kernel of your choice, go into recovery mode by powering off your phone, turn it ON WHILE HOLDING the VOLUME DOWN button, do not let go of the volume down button until you're at the boot screen. Select "Recovery" by pressing the VOLUME DOWN button and selecting it by pressing POWER.
3.) You're now in recovery mode. Make a NANDROID backup (varies on how to do it depending on which recovery you're using) if you're on Clockword Recovery scroll down until you see something saying "nandroid" when there select it with POWER, then select the option that says "Backup". (Not sure how AmonRAs recovery works exactly.)
4.) Wipe data/factory reset twice, wipe CACHE twice, wipe Dalvik-cache twice. (Dalvik-cache is located in "advanced" in the main recovery screen.)
5.) Choose "install zip from sd card" then "choose zip from sd card", press up once and it'll bring you to the bottom of the list and you should see your ROM, select it, then install it. Once done installing, go back and reboot your phone, it should be all done now. IF, IF, IF, you have another kernel, after installing your ROM, re-wipe CACHE and DALVIK-CACHE, THEN install the kernel.
You're all set.
Ok simple enough. Thank you for the info. Can I download the rom directly to my phone from this site or do I need to download it on my computer and move it to my sdcard?

You can download it from your phone, but make sure it's on the ROOT of your sd card. I prefer downloading it from my PC, then putting it on my sd card.
So you mean make sure its on the sd card itself and not in a file like downloads right? Also can I delete the PC36IMG file so it doesn't do that update check every time I go into bootloader?

Depends what recovery you are using. Ra recovery has to be in the root folder of the SD card. Cwr you can actually go through folders and search for the zip. So it wouldn't matter where you out it on SD card for clockwork but If ra recovery and its in a folder in SD card you won't see it and can't search through folders for it.

No problem just trying to help out.. I used Cwr then found out the delvik wipe didn't work. I had my SD card organized. Had my roms and kernels in a folder. Switched to ra recovery and couldn't find them. Realized then it had to be in root folder. Thought somehow I lost them during the process. I have a backup on my pc also just in case.

I have searched on google and through each droid forum site I have been sent to from google trying to fix the problem that i am having. I am currently trying to intall Incredible re imaginedv2.3 on my HTC Incredible. I have tried installing through both ROM manager and through the actual recovery. When I go through ROM manager it fails on the install reboots my phone and freezes at the HTC logo. The same thing happens with the actual recovery. Fails on install asks for the update and it cant find the update.zip file. It then freezes on reboot. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.
Sounds like a bad\corrupt download. Check your copy's MD5 with the ROM developers and make sure its not corrupt. Try downloading it again or download another ROM and try that.

Reengineered prefers. 92 HBOOT fwiw, but it will boot with an older version. That info is buried in the IncReEngineered thread. Plus, in recovery, you do NOT choose the option that says "apply update.zip", rather, you want the selection that lets you choose the zip file you want to apply.

Are you sure your checking apply zip from SD card and not update.zip. if you have a recovery image you should restore it and flash the rom thru rom manager

^ that, and if not, flash back to CWM 2.5.1.2, try installing then. I had to do that when I installed that rom. I know he updated it to work with 3.0, but try anyway. If it works you just just upgrade to 3.0 after flashing the rom.

Still no luck I still get the status 7 error, and it aborts the install. I even downgraded to 2.5.1.2 and it still fails. I am starting to think that i should stay with the one that I am running for a while before i try it again.
I did some quick searching for status 7 and found alot of solutions. Not sure which direction to point you but some common themes were hboot, radio, and permission (make sure read write).... with a specific error u should be able to figure this out. Also a major problem lies with all zips in their scripting since CW recovery update(cwr3 uses edify). Incredibly reengineered zip may need to be updated to be compatible but u think it'd be more common problem if this was the case.
Ok. I will look into all of them and see witch one works. Thank you for all the help.

You sure you have s-off? Check this out.....also make sure SD formatted fat32. I've seen it recommended to wipe twice without leaving recovery(worked for some)....if you try all you can and are still stuck pm koush. He'll set you straight
Is the SD card formatted as FAT32?
Does the SD card have ample free space?
Is the radio (baseband) version on your device at least 2.x?

I reformatted my sd card to FAT32 and it fixed the error. the only thing that i ran into this time is that it failed copying over at a certain line is that because i need more space on my sd card?
Hey guys, I'm really new to rooting, flashing roms, and Android in general (I've used iOS since 2007 until a month ago... please have mercy on my soul). I have an AT&T GN2 that I would like to remove the bloatware from, hence why I began investigating rooting, but it's snowballed into my desire to try out some of the amazing ROMs that the developers here have produced. Since the Note 2 uses the Exynos 4, I rooted using the ExynosAbuse exploit and downloaded Titanium Backup to freeze the AT&T apps. So far, so good.
However, I am wanting to get into how to flash custom ROMs, like CyanogenMod, so I downloaded the CWM RomManager and flashed the CWM Recovery. I downloaded the CyanogenMod 10.1 release for the i317 model (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024495) and the latest gApps package (for 4.2.1), and flashed both from CWM RomManager. When it rebooted, it showed the CyanogenMod boot screen, but it appears to be stuck there. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and am hoping I didn't brick my phone. Is there anything I can do at this point?
Use the three button combo to get into recovery, should be volume up, home, and power, and then wipe data or install a stock rooted ROM. That should help get you to a bootable stage.

When I booted into recovery, I got the CWM recovery (which is a good thing, I suppose). I wiped the cache, and then installed the CM 10.1 zip and gApps zip. However, I think I still need to wipe data/factory reset, right?
So, at this point, I've:
1. Rooted the device using Chainfire's ExynosAbuse apk (super easy).
2. Installed RootChecker (success) and TI backup (froze bloatware apps).
3. Downloaded CWM RomManager.
4. Flashed CWM Recovery.
5. Downloaded CM 10.1 port for i317 (the AT&T GN2 model) and the 4.2.1 gApps zips.
6. Chose to install ROM from SD card in RomManager, added both CM 10.1 and gApps, and only selected install (did not wipe cache or user data at this point).
7. Received blue CyanogenMod boot screen... excited... but it remains on the boot screen. Sad face.
8. Removed battery to power the device off, placed battery back in, and then booted into recovery mode (CWM recovery).
9. Installed the CM 10.1 zip and gApps zip from SD, then wiped cache.
10. ???
Wipe data factory reset. Wipe cache/dalvik. Flash cm, flash gapps. Reboot

Okay, I booted into recovery mode and fixed permissions... the keyboard still crashes, which means I can't type anything. Do I have to do anything with the kernel? I didn't wipe the dalvik cache, should I have done that?
EDIT: wiped dalvik cache, didn't do anything... apparently, this was a fine release so I'm not sure what could be causing the keyboard issues.

Well, I'm downloading CleanROM right now. I also downloaded another cm 10.1 file just in case, perhaps it's because I downloaded it on the mobile Chrome browser that I'm having problems? I also downloaded a kernel from the thread to help with performance. However, if I can't get these on the phone, it doesn't matter. Since I'm on a Mac, I have to use Android File Transfer, and it isn't registering my phone, unfortunately. I may have to go out and buy a cheap SD card and throw the files on there. It may not hurt to have one around, anyways.

No... I thought that a backup of the original ROM was made when flashing CWM recovery, but I am a noob and that did not happen. Unfortunately, the browser doesn't even work! So I cannot text myself the link for the download. I should be able to flash a zip file from a micro sdhc, right?
Flash the right GAPPS, the crashing keyboard is a symptom of incorrect GAPPS. The December one is for 4.2.1 only, which is what CM10.1 is based on. Make sure you flash the right GAPPS with the right CM version.

Oh... crap. Is there any way I can get the correct gApps on my phone? Ugh... I'm going to have access to a Windows machine today, so I can download the correct GAPPS and put them on my flash drive. I can still put it in USB debugging mode, but will the PC recognize it? Android File Transfer software for Mac does not recognize the phone any more, so I'm a bit limited in what I can do. Unless, like I said before, I can just pop in an SD card with the correct file.
Just grab goo manager from the market and dl the correct gapps to your phone. Either that or use your phones browser. No need for a pc. Boot in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik and flash correct gapps. Should be gtg.
Edit: just saw your browser isn't working. Goo manager's your best bet. Could always try another browser from the market as well. Good luck.

My T-Mobile Galaxy S2 (SGH-T989) got updated to ICS via Kies.
I tried rooting again: Used ODIN to flash recovery-cmw-hercules.tar; flashed superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip.
The phone is stuck in a boot loop...keeps rebooting and won't get past the Samsung logo. I tried flashing jeboo kernels also, but the ones I found are all written for the i9100 phone (not SGH-T989).

The Gapps package just loads Google applications that are not written into the framework of the ROM. If you don't load the package, there is no way for you to get the play store. The apps you had would have to have been backed up with a third party app (Titanium backup or App2SD) Once you flash the Gapps package, go into the Play Store and download the apps you had with your other ICS ROM. My advice to you is get Titanium Backup. Its cross platform. So when you decide to upgrade to JB, you can load all your old apps from your ICS build onto the new ROM. Its well worth the 3.44 for the pro version. But the free version works just as well. Hope this helps.
