[q]Convert to system app root66 and now cm 10.1 - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Before I flashed cm 10.1 I had 4.1.1 stock root and I converted apps like chrome and swiftkey to system apps via titanium backup. It worked really well and reduced some lag/latency.
Would it help in cm10.1? I haven't noticed these two apps being unusually slow but since I use them most often maybe it could speed them up?
I tried converting both but chrome would just open and close and swiftkey would crash. Any advice?
Thank you

I haven't noticed any major difference in speed converting apps to system apps, but it can't hurt. After you converted, did you change the permissions to rw--r--r? If that doesn't work, I'd fix permissions in recovery.

Just for kicks you can wipe /cache and /dalvik as well.

I noticed a considerable difference on root66 but cm is running pretty smoothly for now. I don't know how to change permissions though
And I guess wiping cache + dalvik speeds up phone without causing data loss??
Thanks

There is a speed difference between /data and /system? I must know the technical reasons behind this.

Maybe due to old and mixed up data on the /data side?
Or could android give a higher priority to system apps?
If so, id like to know for sure as well. But those are the only 2 scenarios I can think of that could cause this...

Using a root explorer app, you can change permissions after it is moved. There are tons out there, but for example, I use ES file explorer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwyLDEsImNvbS5lc3Ryb25ncy5hbmRyb2lkLnBvcCJd).
You long press on the file, tap "more," then "preferences," then change permissions. Other apps are similar as well.

This is the only possibility. I'm still not going to believe it until I see some real evidence. Google Talk and Now used to be system apps. Never noticed a difference when I put them on /data. I prefer apps on /data. You don't lose them when you update your ROM.

yeah it says it's rw--r--r, still closes instantly as a system app . I'll figure out how to do it through recovery!

TB breaking apps on Intergration...

Any help here would be appreciated. This happened twice with google maps and once with facebook. Instead of integrating, apps are being removed from phone.
I am on stangs rom the latest official deodexed gingerbread rom...never had this problem before.
Are you restoring data+apps? And if so what Rom did u back them up with?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
Nah. When I install a new rom (like this one for instance) I only restore user apps and data. I leave all the internal apps alone.
Soo after getting updates for internal apps (like Gmail/Maps/Facebook) I use the intergrate button and then **poof** the apps are removed. Icon still shows up under system/apps in Root Explorer but the app and icon don't show up anymore on phone.
So what do you guys recommend? Should I just do this manually in Root Explorer? How can I integrate on my own to save some space?
Just wanted to bump. I know I can do this the reverse way while rooted. I guess by removing the app and reinstalling again but anyone else have any ideas?
Still getting this problem.
How much free space is is /system? TB may fail on moving if there is not enough space free.

Hmmm I bet you are on to something. Only about 3-4 mb free. Even though I can free up about another 40 mb by deleting an app.disabled folder I created. Thanks man I bet this is why.

Seems like it could be quite useful. What about data? Will it retain data for apps, or just the app itself? And do you have the choice to retain data for certain apps or not?
Maybe you could create two zip files, one for just apps and another for apps+data...

Well, and yes this backups data, 12 of my 39 applications that required uninstalling and redownloading.
Depends on the the tool though. MyBackup Root still works beautifully for all data restoring needs.
This was such a better option though. I was excited. I wish there was an option for no data :/

So, if I am understanding correctly what this app does, it will create a zip file of JUST your apps, and when flashed, will restore the backed up apps to /data/app
I use TB to backup my data, and HATE to restore any data for apps until AFTER I have fully tested the ROM with my apps and no data restores, so this would be awesome!
And yah, I know TB does this, but if this is a simple one click thing, would make it super easy for me, and the price couldn't be better

[Partial Solved] Note 2 reducing available space

Hi,
My note 2 has this weird problem. The available memory will gradually reduced without any reason until it reaches 0 and all the phone functions cannot be used including receiving calls. The phone is stock ROM with minimal app installed. It happened after a month of usage.Initially I tot it was some rogue app that causes the problem hence I did a full wipe, rooted with wanam lite ROM installed but the problem still persisted.
I factory reset without any app installed except for Whatsapp and Facebook but the available memory still reduces until 0 bytes without any reason. The phone only shows 2GB files while the rest vanished into thin air unless I factory reset again.
I have exhausted all troubleshooting methods including wiping cache and dalvik, factory reset, rooted and custom ROM installed.
I would like to see anyone has a solution with such issues. Thanks.
Update: Partially solved

Possibly your miscellaneous files taking up space. These are all your synced pictures etc. Try to locate cloud agent via settings storage misc. See how much space its using?

But the file explorer and es file explorer are not able to analyze the internal storage properly.
That's why I'm not able to determine which misc files is building up over time. No cloud storage used.

Re: Note 2 reducing available space
CREate a difeerwnt google account and use the phone with that acfount for a little while to see that makes a different. I am thinking something is installed without you knowing it. I can only assume culprit is with your google account and virud as mentioned before. Do you have a sd card inside ? If yes remove and tey diferewnt one. And rhe last thin comes to my mind is your internal srorage might be failing.

FOUND A FIX
I was searching for the cause of space getting low day by day without any app installed n figured out it was logs under /data/log as u hv already found out.
I deleted all files in the folder n changed permissions n now no more log files.
FIX:
Remove "write" permission to the folder /data/log
Change it from rwxrwxr-x to r-xr-xr-x or r--r--r-- or ---------
I changed it to r-xr-xr-x
Report any unusual behavior after changing permissions.
In my case always this is the culprit. Always keepa on drinking storage and comes back after deleting.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
all those caused from /data partition and specific from /data/media
You can formata data/media from recovery(suggesting philz) and solve your problem.
Be aware that you will loose all user data

Removing bloat

With every other rooted phone I've had I was always able to remove unwanted systems apps by either removing APK's from system/app or using titanium backup. Now with the One everytime I try to do that a reboot causes the apps to return. What's the deal? Amazon apps for example, don't want any of them, I'm rooted, how can I get rid of them?

Dude that's insanely generous of you, but I guess this is what it comes down to... I use facebook and twitters integration with sense, which if I'm not mistaken lies in the framework? If I run your script, will it remove the integration? ie Facebook for HTC sense, Twitter for HTC sense... will your debloat script remove that? Really what bothers me more than having the bloatware, is not knowing why I can't remove it from system if it is R/W. I've just never ran into this issue unless it was a tethered root.

HTC has write protection on the system files.
Give me 20 min or so I will have you a script.
WTF write protection on system files? Is that because of stock Rom or what? I've never heard of that before. I did notice when I tried to use ES to move a .wav file to /system/media/audio/notifications it wouldn't stick after a reboot, then used Root Explorer to move the file and boom, it stuck after reboot.

I don't fully understand it, but I know it will revert changes after a reboot. To permanently change something you have to do it in recovery since the filesystem isn't active.

That sounds about right, but what exactly are you doing when the freezing usually occurs? What apps are running in the background while this occurs? If youre not sure, go to Dev Options and check 'Back kills all activities' and see how it operates for a day with that being checked. If that is checked, uncheck it and allow the RAM you have free to be used the way it needs to.
Also, are you Pure Stock or Stock Rooted?
You could also go to Applications Manager> Running, switch to Cached Processes and see if any of those labor intensive activities are showing High(30 +) MBs
I should have been more specific. But I was talking about internal storage.
*flips the table and walks out*
Its generally when im messaging thru the stock app with swype keyboard. The stock keyboard is too small for my fat thumbs.

But you didn't answer the internal memory question. Open MyFiles app and tap the pie chart near top right and read the middle column, Device storage, I think. 32GB capacity; what's available?
Using stock Swype or paid Swype from Play? Too many keyboards shouldn't be an issue but being rooted, I remove unwanted keyboards and stick with modified paid Swype (yes, I paid for it but modify it to get more alternate symbols and add a dedicated number row like the Samsung keyboard does). I think if I were not rooted, I'd disable them if possible if using another. I'm sure you've heard of Swype lag; it should be resolved even in the stock version. I've used both with no issue but didn't have both installed at same time.
When you upgraded to Lollipop, did you factory reset and reinstall apps and updates? Short of that, clearing data and cache for the suspect applications in app manager is the only thing I'd suggest at this point. Another OTA update is expected sooon; if rooted, harder to take OTA.

Perhaps I tripped up over the definition of Swype. When I say stock, I'm referring to the included version of Swype that Samsung provides. Maybe it updates from Google Play? IDK.
If you're using the paid version of Swype, try disabling the stock version with application manager. It's been too long for me, don't know if that app can be disabled.
But despite the ill communicated Swype versions, I'd say your issue is the fact you haven't factory reset after or before the lollipop OTA. I actually seen that myself because I took the OB7 OTA rather than wait for an Odin tar. The /data file system was mixed Lollipop and KitKat. A factory reset will get the file system correct. Maybe that helps. I can't think of a good application backup that works well for non rooted phones. But I hear this one is good. Backup before you factory reset. Maybe Android M gets some of this right, like full app and data restore and file management coherence between updates.

That's true; cache uncontrolled can can get out of hand, especially with browsers and ads. I don't manage mine manually but only have 39MB cache. Rooted has its advantages. I use an app with a lot of white listed apps to avoid bulk cache wiping.

Cached data and downloads is usually my problem. I also use the paid version of Swype and in hangouts it lags or won't pop up until I close and open it again.
