Hi,
My note 2 has this weird problem. The available memory will gradually reduced without any reason until it reaches 0 and all the phone functions cannot be used including receiving calls. The phone is stock ROM with minimal app installed. It happened after a month of usage.Initially I tot it was some rogue app that causes the problem hence I did a full wipe, rooted with wanam lite ROM installed but the problem still persisted.
I factory reset without any app installed except for Whatsapp and Facebook but the available memory still reduces until 0 bytes without any reason. The phone only shows 2GB files while the rest vanished into thin air unless I factory reset again.
I have exhausted all troubleshooting methods including wiping cache and dalvik, factory reset, rooted and custom ROM installed.
I would like to see anyone has a solution with such issues. Thanks.
Update: Partially solved

found the culprit. it was cause by the dumpstate from the phone which consistently building up over time with 6MB per file. Once cleared all the file, the missing space will return.
No idea how to stop it thou, but at least I do not need to factory reset it every time now.
it's located within the root directory under data>log

Re: Note 2 reducing available space
Possibly your miscellaneous files taking up space. These are all your synced pictures etc. Try to locate cloud agent via settings storage misc. See how much space its using?

But the file explorer and es file explorer are not able to analyze the internal storage properly.
That's why I'm not able to determine which misc files is building up over time. No cloud storage used.

Could be a virus. Do you have 4.1.1 or 4.1.2?

4.1.2.. I did a factory wipe before..
Re: Note 2 reducing available space
CREate a difeerwnt google account and use the phone with that acfount for a little while to see that makes a different. I am thinking something is installed without you knowing it. I can only assume culprit is with your google account and virud as mentioned before. Do you have a sd card inside ? If yes remove and tey diferewnt one. And rhe last thin comes to my mind is your internal srorage might be failing.

download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage it will show you exactly what's eating up your space. its probably the thumbnails folder in /dcim ..if that's the case just delete the whole folder
don't forget the Thanks button

Had the same problem, I formatted the internal SD card and now I have a lot of free space!!

FOUND A FIX
I was searching for the cause of space getting low day by day without any app installed n figured out it was logs under /data/log as u hv already found out.
I deleted all files in the folder n changed permissions n now no more log files.
FIX:
Remove "write" permission to the folder /data/log
Change it from rwxrwxr-x to r-xr-xr-x or r--r--r-- or ---------
I changed it to r-xr-xr-x
Report any unusual behavior after changing permissions.
In my case always this is the culprit. Always keepa on drinking storage and comes back after deleting.

all those caused from /data partition and specific from /data/media
You can formata data/media from recovery(suggesting philz) and solve your problem.
Be aware that you will loose all user data

Did you make sure to delete these files off of your internal SD card and not your external SD card?
Are you stock or rooted? If so what rom are you using?
When did you notice this issue?

Hello all. I have recently started receiving low storage warnings even though bit appears I have plenty of space with both internal and external memory.
Can anyone advise?

I don't know what is going on, but that image shows you only have 401 MB available.
Something is chewing up your storage space or at least making your phone think it is almost gone.
Do you have a bunch of nandroid backup's saved to your internal drive or something?

Yeah, I'm thinking you have either a lot of zips or you have nandroids on there that are taking up space. Check out
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage
It will give you a visual display of the folders that are using the most space and what files are the culprits.

Thank you both your recommendations I used the supplied app and solid explorer and I was able to find several gigs of picasa 3d gallery cache files and similar situations with ROM Manager "blobs" seems to be resolved now.
Wonder why it occurred in the first place..odd

I agree that it likely has something to do with those backups. I downloaded the app but can't seem to figure out where space is being taken up. I transfer all my backups to my external sd, but don't know what the hell is taking my space up.

Those 'blobs' are where CWM stores its backup files from what i've read, personally i use TWRP so i can't confirm this.

+1 twrp. Im a former cwm touch user absolutely hated the .92gb backups from cwm. Now I can have multiple backups on hand without sacrificing storage space.
AT&T SGS3
AOKP Task & Ktoonsez ROM
KT747 Kernel OC'ed & UV'ed
Medical MJ Supporter
I had the same problem, I re flashed cm10 4 times and still only had about 500mb of available space on my internal
turns out when you select "wipe/factory reset" on CWM Recovery it doesn't actually delete everything..
DiskUsage was the perfect tool for the job, there was 6 gigs of leftover gameloft stuff on the phone, removed the files and now im a happy camper with plenty of free space!
I seem to be having an issue which started just recently anytime I flash a new rom or nightly release of AOKP or CM10 all the content in my DCIM/Camera seems to be gone the content in the thumbnails folder is still there but the photos at completely all gone any ideas what could be causing this issue? Thank you in advance.
The photos are gone in your internal sdcard?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
well I just checked all images are gone... internal and external photos.. images..wallpapers... just gone very strange plugged into pc and I see some of the files there for the images and the file size but can't copy any of them and on the phone the folders are just empty
Maybe you could get lucky using a data recovery tool on your sdcard. There should be some free/trial ones on the net. You just gotta search em out.
As for why....no idea. Obviously it shouldn't be doing that! Maybe the updater-script does something like format data or something...though tgat diesnt make sense either....has anyone else in the rom thread reported this too?

Actually someone said that they had the same issue with AOSP roms and started using quickpic instead and solved the issue

Indeed I mean my new pictures I'm taking seem to be staying but everything all of my 700 images and pictures are gone nothing left which is very strange how only all the image media got wiped on external and internal sd
I don't see why or how but is it possible they were somehow actually stored in the apps data/cache folder and just linked to the sdcard??
It seems far fetched but its the only real explanation I could come up with other than something being corrupt and not working as intended.....
That's an odd one man.
Have you looked into any data recovery tools? I've heard of some success with them dealing with flash media like sdcards.

I'll look into the recovery tool and I was thinking the same with it being tied to the cache as well just really strange never had this issue before
As the title mentiones, my device is out of memory. Like none. Even if I install a new rom the phone storage is still low cant even update all my apps because there's no space on my device. I tried apps to see whats taking up the huge space but there all worthless really cant delete from the app. Dont want to delete important files either so question is how can I get ride of all this crap the phone doesn't need?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
silly question, but once it was done calculating did you tap on one of the sections to see the individual files and there sizes? i was coming close to having this issue, until i went through each of those sections with a fine tooth comb. it was then i found piles of old downloaded files just stock piled....ended up clearing 3 gigs.
Let that screen sit for a minute to let the calculations finish. Then select a category (like miscellaneous). Then check which files you like to delete. The hidden thumbnail folder can get big, much like other app folders that cache info.

In my screenshot above, that 2+GB TWRP folder has only 1 backup of the data partition. Moving these backups to external SD can open a lot of internal storage space.

I can't for the life of me find this directory. When I last installed a nandroid it showed /media but it's not there. I have looked in almost every folder. Before flashing to 4.3 my nandroid was in sdcard/twrp but not anymore.
Also is there a difference between sdcard0 and emulated?? I swear I should have a lot more space then I do. Was wondering with these two directories are the files doubled or are they in fact just mirrored.

The 0 folder gets created when any CM based Rom is installed. Just copy the contents of your SD to the 0 folder and keep both.
There is a logcat file that grows each time you install a CM ROM. It's in /root on stock, and in /mnt/shell/emulated in CM Rom's.
TWRP looks in the 0 folder or /data/media/0
Edit: Ooops forgot to say you can delete that logcat

Thanks for the quick reply! The log cat is only 10mb so no biggie. I still can't find my backups though looking where you said. I tried to delete my old nandroids with rom toolbox but they didn't delete.

You sure you didn't delete them too?
Try /mnt/sdcard, or /mnt/shell/emulated.
If you still can't find them, reboot to TWRP, see if they show, then boot up ROM
Use a rooted explorer on your phone to find them. Your computer my not show them yet....but eventually. Sometimes its a bugger to get the files to show up.
Wow. Finally found it. Swear I looked here a million times but it was in /data/media/twrp/backups
Root browser in rom toolbox wouldn't delete them but es file Explorer did. Got 1.7gb back. I only need one nandroid!
Still would love to know where the rest of my space is though. May have to do a full wipe at some point.

Yeah i was wondering if all those mirrors are taking up extra space. I have the same folders in like 4 different places all with different dates on them. I have only 8gbs free. Pics are like 1.5gbs and music is 8gbs. My backups and old rom downloads are about 4gbs. No way my apps take up the rest of the space. I don't even have any games installed right now.

I think that's what happened to me. I bounced between stock, nexogen, cm 10.1 and all the 4.3 roms.
Downloaded a disk usage app and honestly with their breakdown it actually adds up. I also didn't take into account system data. I takes up 2gbs on its own. I thought that would have been included in the 7gb unusable we have.
Plus i guess there are some residual cache issues. Those 0 folders have cache files from old programs. I found 500mb cache file from spotify and I haven't had that installed for a few weeks. Plus i found a 500mb logcat file.
I guess i'll do more digging and clean it up. I don't feel like wiping internal right now.
