Freezing problem - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been having a problem lately with my phone freezing up. Takes some time to unfreeze. Sometimes I have to force reboot it. Im running stock everything with the newest sprint update.

How much free memory do you have?

I average from 1.5 to 2 gb free unless im doing labor intensive stuff

That sounds about right, but what exactly are you doing when the freezing usually occurs? What apps are running in the background while this occurs? If youre not sure, go to Dev Options and check 'Back kills all activities' and see how it operates for a day with that being checked. If that is checked, uncheck it and allow the RAM you have free to be used the way it needs to.
Also, are you Pure Stock or Stock Rooted?
You could also go to Applications Manager> Running, switch to Cached Processes and see if any of those labor intensive activities are showing High(30 +) MBs

I should have been more specific. But I was talking about internal storage.

*flips the table and walks out*

Its generally when im messaging thru the stock app with swype keyboard. The stock keyboard is too small for my fat thumbs.

And also when i click on the messanging app

But you didn't answer the internal memory question. Open MyFiles app and tap the pie chart near top right and read the middle column, Device storage, I think. 32GB capacity; what's available?
Using stock Swype or paid Swype from Play? Too many keyboards shouldn't be an issue but being rooted, I remove unwanted keyboards and stick with modified paid Swype (yes, I paid for it but modify it to get more alternate symbols and add a dedicated number row like the Samsung keyboard does). I think if I were not rooted, I'd disable them if possible if using another. I'm sure you've heard of Swype lag; it should be resolved even in the stock version. I've used both with no issue but didn't have both installed at same time.
When you upgraded to Lollipop, did you factory reset and reinstall apps and updates? Short of that, clearing data and cache for the suspect applications in app manager is the only thing I'd suggest at this point. Another OTA update is expected sooon; if rooted, harder to take OTA.

6.4gb of 32gb
Stock swype from play
Im not rooted and no factory reset or reinstall. The update did its own thing.

Perhaps I tripped up over the definition of Swype. When I say stock, I'm referring to the included version of Swype that Samsung provides. Maybe it updates from Google Play? IDK.
If you're using the paid version of Swype, try disabling the stock version with application manager. It's been too long for me, don't know if that app can be disabled.
But despite the ill communicated Swype versions, I'd say your issue is the fact you haven't factory reset after or before the lollipop OTA. I actually seen that myself because I took the OB7 OTA rather than wait for an Odin tar. The /data file system was mixed Lollipop and KitKat. A factory reset will get the file system correct. Maybe that helps. I can't think of a good application backup that works well for non rooted phones. But I hear this one is good. Backup before you factory reset. Maybe Android M gets some of this right, like full app and data restore and file management coherence between updates.

How much cached data has built up? I had almost three gigs. Went to settings/storage and tapped on cached data to clear it. Helped and I had a little more free memory than you. Worth a shot.

That's true; cache uncontrolled can can get out of hand, especially with browsers and ads. I don't manage mine manually but only have 39MB cache. Rooted has its advantages. I use an app with a lot of white listed apps to avoid bulk cache wiping.

Cached data and downloads is usually my problem. I also use the paid version of Swype and in hangouts it lags or won't pop up until I close and open it again.

is there an app to stop apps and games loading in background
No it's the way android works, kill one background app. And android will just let another one start up.
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Do not use task killers. They probably do more harm than good.
With the "Autostarts" app, you can actually prevent the app service from loading in the first place. Is that what you mean?
You can try titanium backups freeze mode where you can stop certain apps from loading without uninstalling them. There is a safe list on these forums, have a look for them.
This is all pointless though, As i said before freeze or stop one process, and android will just let another one start up. The only way around it is like only having 5 apps installed . Anyway lots of free ram is a bad thing on android, it means your system is not optimised. Remember android uses ram diffrent to windows. You should have 40-60mb of free memory. That means android is running it's own workload well
If you don't have the paid version of titanium backup you can also try bloatfreezer. You can get it from the android market and it's free

I use app quarantine, it'll stop apps from opening/running you don't want to run without changing the system... You need root, tho

TB breaking apps on Intergration...

Any help here would be appreciated. This happened twice with google maps and once with facebook. Instead of integrating, apps are being removed from phone.
I am on stangs rom the latest official deodexed gingerbread rom...never had this problem before.
Are you restoring data+apps? And if so what Rom did u back them up with?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
Nah. When I install a new rom (like this one for instance) I only restore user apps and data. I leave all the internal apps alone.
Soo after getting updates for internal apps (like Gmail/Maps/Facebook) I use the intergrate button and then **poof** the apps are removed. Icon still shows up under system/apps in Root Explorer but the app and icon don't show up anymore on phone.
So what do you guys recommend? Should I just do this manually in Root Explorer? How can I integrate on my own to save some space?
Just wanted to bump. I know I can do this the reverse way while rooted. I guess by removing the app and reinstalling again but anyone else have any ideas?
Still getting this problem.
How much free space is is /system? TB may fail on moving if there is not enough space free.

Hmmm I bet you are on to something. Only about 3-4 mb free. Even though I can free up about another 40 mb by deleting an app.disabled folder I created. Thanks man I bet this is why.

What do others do with unused system apps

Let's take the default web browser. Do you freeze it, install it, or leave it be? What about other duplicate apps what do you do with extra I'm wondering if i should install if i use chrome or if i might need is

If I feel I might need in future, like gallery for lock screen wall paper, I freeze. Rest I delete.

May i ask what about web browser which do you use and is original frozen? Thanks for reply glad you did

Boat mini. Small in size, works great!

If I'm planning to stick with the same ROM for a few weeks or longer, then I'll delete the unused apps.
But if I think I may upgrade/update an AOSP ROM to a new nightly, then I just freeze the apps. When you update the ROM, the apps remain frozen. But if you deleted the apps, then they get re-installed and you have to delete them all over again.
I personally only freeze apps that I consider bloatware or I don't utilize.
There is more then enough space on the device to just leave them.
Sent from my SGH-I747M
For the most part I've just left the system apps be since there's enough space. Since I just switched from stock rom I'm not where near the same utilization anymore lol so even less inclined... However, I did freeze and uninstall rogers related bloat as soon as I got it.

Another way to improve battery life.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but. One thing I have done is remove all the clutter and sweep it under the rug. I never realized how much useless crap I actually install. Could be 150 to 200 apps. Recently what I did was rely on titanium backup for app storage. Basicly all I do on a fresh install is restore the bare minimum. For example, only the apps on my home screen. Anything more than that is too much. All the rest of the crap I leave it in the closet and if I really do need it I can quickly install it in seconds with titanium. By only having 6 or 10 apps vs. 200 apps for some reason my battery last much longer. You will be surprised at how many of those apps never get instaled after a week or two.

I never have that many apps I stick with around 10-30 apps

I have 141 apps (including blaotware) and I don't think uninstalling them will make a difference since most apps behave them selves and the other apps I just greenify them

Yes, this is the same idea. However not installing them from the get go leaves so much more space for the phone to do it's job. Just saying I noticed an improvement and it worth a try. With how many times we flash from one rom to another and then restore. You all got nothing to loose.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
With that many apps I can see how it would help, but damn I struggle to find 25 apps I would even want lol.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
All of my 30 apps which is few amount are more less root related resource apps that actually come in handy on a phon3 like titanium...zedge..setcpu...cpuspy...xda
..wikipedia... and maybe a game or two.
People that have more than 50 apps probably never even use them.. the most widely used part of any phone is sms txt messaging even over phone calls... and then the camera
Every other one of the million apps on android are mostly corny and useless.
Im sure there are a wide number of kool and use full ones but really think about the average app u run across. Its likely dumb!
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
I think the goal is to improve battery life without ultimately sacrificing user experience.
Less apps does mean less things consuming ram and activating GPS, data etc which does consumes battery tho.
Every once in a while try just enabling power saver and closing apps when you don't need them.

GT-N5100 3G only Shows 1GB free space after upgrading

Hey Folks
I have a question. I just updated my Note 8 3G to CM11. I did a complete wipe before upgrading.
I notice now that i only have 1.2GB free space out of the 9GB. This seems very strange. Its a clean install of CM11 and i havent even downloaded any apps.
Is the 1.2GB Free real? or is something else happening here..
Any help?
I will post a screen pic soon.
Attached is a screen capture. Clearly there is something wrong. The bar plot shows I should have much more than 1.7GB

Download DiskUsage. Free app on Play that will show you what's taking up space.
Did you wipe System also? I ran into that issue awhile back. Turns out CWM was keeping separate backup blobs in the internal. Switched to TWRP. Wiped typical (including System) flashed the ROM of choice and no problem. CWM seems to resist doing complete wipes sometimes
I did a factory reset and it solved the problem. FYI. I am using twrp. So might be a cm11 issue
