Hi all,
I have rooted my n2.
My question is with the new update coming to 4.2, is it possible to update my firmware even though I am rooted as when I click check for updates on the phone it says I cant as I am rooted.
Will I have to un root and then upgraded (when it finaly arrives) then root again?

Don't complicate things Just download lates ROM from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and flash with Odin. Then root again, it is a 3 minute process.... you won't loose any settings, data or apps.
U can update using mobile Odin when the new 4.2 firmware when its available via samMobile. It will keep the root. I hv been using it to update the last few times.

Hi all, i am total noob in android phones and the note 2 (was an ardent BB fan over many years).
Quick question if you guys don't mind.
I have Mobile Odin and I have rooted me phone; what I'm absolutely unsure of is, the new 4.2 firmware when it's available, where do I head to to download it? Do i save it as a zip file in the ext SD card and install it via Mobile Odin from there? If not, please advise the how-to please.
Many thanks for helping out this total noob.
Thanks

is the new update flashable with TWRP? Or just with odin? Whats with root? do i have to unroot the n2 -> flash -> root again?

If you flash with mobile Odin, there is option to keep the root. If you flash with Odin, you must root again, which is a 3 minute process, so IMHO is not a big deal. I dunno about TWRP since I don't have custom recovery, I don't want my counter raising

Many thanks for the advice mate! Cheers
Isn't there an option in Mobile Odin (paid version) to do exactly this ?
I guess SuperSU pro has OTA survival mode, that protects root access if you use the official Samsung OTA update. Full ROM flashes via PC Odin will not preserve root, Mobile ODIN will preserve root if you select the option.
I thought that samsung disables ota updates for rooted or "Modified" systems?

Hello
I have rooted my Galaxy Note II and installed CWM for the recovery. I am also running a stock ROM. There is a new OTA update, and before I am going to do it, quick question: when I update, will I still have root access or will it break it somehow? I'm running the Stock 4.1.1
Flash stock recovery..so u can get ota then just root again..rooting takes 3 seconds

Hello,
I too had root, CWM recovery and stock ROM on my note 2 and was able to successfully take the OTA update to 4.1.2 and retain root access. I obviously have a stock recovery now after the upgrade but root is still present! I did have SuperSU (paid for version) that has the Survive OTA update mode and it worked like a charm! One thing to note is that it was not obvious at first that root was retained.
Immediately after the update, my root access failed when trying to use Titanium backup. Also, other apps requiring root access were failing as well. So, I went into SuperSU and ticked the "enable Super User" mode off and then on again and rebooted the phone.
After the reboot I noticed that Titanium Backup had root access and then verified the rest of my apps were working as well.
Three cheers to the creators of these wonderful programs.....I'm very glad I paid for the updates and got the added functionality!!
Good luck to all and hopefully it works as well for you as it did for me!!
So I was reading around the web - particularly on Droid-Life that the Verizon Note II now has been updated to fix the Exynos-related bug. Now, I'm on the international LTE model - GT-N7105 - and sooner or later I will receive the update as well. Now, as stated in the article linked earlier , a rooted user tried downloading the update and failed. So there's the backstory.
Now, as for my question. I will obviously have to unroot (which I am looking to do anyways) but here's the thing. I rooted using the ExynosAbuse apk from Chainfire. That makes the status in Settings -> About device set to "Custom", thereby preventing me from receiving OTA updates. ExynosAbuse has an unroot button. When pressed, it tells you to reboot to complete the process and then to reboot around 10 minutes later since it might reset the status to "Normal". Well, it doesn't do that for me.
So I used another tool by Chainfire; TriangleAway to set my ODIN flash counter back to 0 (in case it was causing anything; didn't check.)
Now, I used TriangleAway get around the "Modified" thing. Experimented with the 'Allow tracker to run' feature and ended up getting my flash counter to be 0 and my system status to say normal.
When the update arrives, I will probably have to unroot. However, as previously stated, my system status will go Modified when I do. So here's the question (and TL;DR):
TL;DR: I am having TriangleAway set to allow the tracker to run in order to have my system status "Normal" and I want to unroot in order to receive the update that has started rolling out. However, disabling the tracker and unrooting will set my device status to "Custom". That will prevent me from receiving the update. What do I do?
Additional info: I have not flashed ANYTHING custom - I only rooted for a few Xposed tweaks.
Thanks for your time.

1. Download the correct firmware update from sammobile.com
2. Update your firmware thru Odin
And you will have a fresh firmware with Status Normal.

Okay, so to clear this up:
- Will flashing the latest firmware in Odin (or Heimdall, which I'll be using; OSX...) wipe my phone? Will it though the flash counter?
- Can it be done through Mobile Odin without keeping root? Will using Mobile Odin to update my firmware wipe my phone?
Thanks for your patience with me, guys.
You wanna send phone for warranty ?
If no then forget about counter and flash latest stock firmware.
And flashing stock rom via odin won't delete anything.

Awesome, one last thing, if I used ExynosAbuse to root (the exploit which this update patches), and I use Mobile Odin's "EverRoot" feature, do you think it will still work? Thanks
Yeah but mobile odin can't flash tar images. You gotta flash via pc odin.
Then can root via cf auto root.

Not done downloading the latest stock image from sammobile but it downloads as a zip. Is this a flashable zip or is it a zip containing the tar file? If it is flashable, I can just use mobile odin, right?
[edit] it was mentioned that Mobile Odin does not support .tar.md5 files. It says that it does in the description?
It contains *.tar.md5
It isn't flushable via mobile Odin.
Only pc Odin.
Make sure your version is dll7 or ubdll3

And my phone is rooted so I can't update via the phone itself. This is my first android phone and I am not sure what to do in this instance. Do I have to unroot, update via phone, and then root again? Or is there a way to just update the device and root again without needing to unroot it to begin with?

I use Kies to upgrade to 4.1.2 from a 4.1.1 root device. I just put the phone to 100% charging, and launch the upate from Kies. It's a long process, there is one rather quick download, about a minute without any activities, a windows UAC message, and another very slow download (about 2hours), and finally, a firmware copy on phone and upgrading. After that, i root again using CF-autoroot. I don't wipe or unroot before, and don't loose data after.

Yes. Download the entire ROM for your region and then flash it using Mobile Odin Pro. You can also set the option to root the ROM after flash since when you flash a stock ROM you lose root. There are threads specific for Mobile Odin where you can get more details. All the best...

OTA is not possible with root, but you can update with Kies desktop even with a root phone, like i do. For me, it's the best choice, i have a branded Orange phone, and the 4.1.2 rom is the one provided by Orange, with their start/stop animation, wallpaper and system apps (TV/Deezer and so on). The only backdraw is that you must wait for your carrier to make the rom, the Orange France 4.1.2 came only last week. But finally it came, and i'm happy with the 4.1.2, no battery drain bug, i guess the exynos bug is patched, multi-window and notification toogle button editing. Not a revolution but a nice update.
I got an ota update of 4.3 and I downloaded the 700 firmware! But when installing it, when went to DL mode and on 35% approx., some error occurred and phone booted up back with 4.1.2! and now checking OTA updates says that the phone is running on latest update!

The only issue with odin update is that it cleans the internal memory! And I don't want that, I have alot of data in that.
Yes, I can copy that and paste later but then it ****s up whatsapp files and images and sometimes the android folder :/
Ps, phone is not rooted! Any way to get the update without wiping the internal?

I'm finding it difficult to simply find a tutorial to relock the bootloader for my sgh-i317. I understand I can use Odin which I did to root but I'm new to this and don't know where to find the appropriate file so I can attempt to update via OTA. Any help is appreciated...

This will erase EVERYTHING on your phone so use kies to back up messages, pics, etc BEFORE you begin!!
Go to sammobile and dl the stock firmware then dl this.
Have $3 on your google play account for triangleaway.
Then follow these steps
1.flash the stock firmware with odin
2. flash chainfire autoroot and update supersu in the play store
3. purchase and install triangle away (pay for it and support these awesome developers, dont be that guy), run counter reset and reboot
4. in supersu unroot
5.boot into stock recovery and factory reset and wipe cache and delvik cache and reboot.
6. on you phone go to settings>about phone> software update and run the ota update.
That should do it as you have gone completely back to stock, reset your counter and have stock recovery. This is what i had to do to get the ota to 4.3 yesterday/
