Hello
I have rooted my Galaxy Note II and installed CWM for the recovery. I am also running a stock ROM. There is a new OTA update, and before I am going to do it, quick question: when I update, will I still have root access or will it break it somehow? I'm running the Stock 4.1.1
Flash stock recovery..so u can get ota then just root again..rooting takes 3 seconds

The update did not work for some reason. Is there anything else that would need to be changed in order for the update to work?
U have stock recovery?

Hello,
I too had root, CWM recovery and stock ROM on my note 2 and was able to successfully take the OTA update to 4.1.2 and retain root access. I obviously have a stock recovery now after the upgrade but root is still present! I did have SuperSU (paid for version) that has the Survive OTA update mode and it worked like a charm! One thing to note is that it was not obvious at first that root was retained.
Immediately after the update, my root access failed when trying to use Titanium backup. Also, other apps requiring root access were failing as well. So, I went into SuperSU and ticked the "enable Super User" mode off and then on again and rebooted the phone.
After the reboot I noticed that Titanium Backup had root access and then verified the rest of my apps were working as well.
Three cheers to the creators of these wonderful programs.....I'm very glad I paid for the updates and got the added functionality!!
Good luck to all and hopefully it works as well for you as it did for me!!

Trying to figure out the best route. My goal is to root and install roms.
I'm on LJ1 and I'm being asked to update.
A) Install OTA update then Root/install recovery tool kit? (does toolkit work on LJC?)
OR
B) Root/installToolkit firt then manually update to LJC?
root after update

Agreed. I first updated my Note II to LJC, then rooted using the Toolkit.

May I ask how? I try to install my update and it brings me to twrp recovery. Don't know where to go from there.

Galaxy phones are not like HTC or other phones they are not boot loader locked or encrypted . Odin can always flash on it ...

Hey Guys,
Just heard that the update is coming to canada on Wednesday. Will I need to unroot my note 2 for the update to work? Can I use CF method to re root again once the update has completed?

As long as you have stock recovery you are good. However after the update you may loose root, and your device status may say modified unless you factory reset.

Remove root.
Then install update.
Reapply root.
I'd recommend a custom rom. You get so much more. And it's been multi Window 4.1.2 since October.
Sent from my GN2 using XDA app.
So the 4.1.2 update is out. But I have root. This will remove it correct? and does anyone know if it has multi window?
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
Any idea if it includes the subsequent BMA updates that fixed the various issues introduced by 4.1.2 (ie: poor battery life)?

Any way to keep root while updating through odin?
Or can I root it again with odin cfroot.
I am just frightened by triangle away.

Got it. Copied the update.zip from cache (showed as 0.0 mb. But 230 mb after copying)
had to boot into recovery, install the update that way. And I used ota root keeper (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper) to back up and restore root. Cheers.

Hi all,
I have rooted my n2.
My question is with the new update coming to 4.2, is it possible to update my firmware even though I am rooted as when I click check for updates on the phone it says I cant as I am rooted.
Will I have to un root and then upgraded (when it finaly arrives) then root again?

Don't complicate things Just download lates ROM from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and flash with Odin. Then root again, it is a 3 minute process.... you won't loose any settings, data or apps.
U can update using mobile Odin when the new 4.2 firmware when its available via samMobile. It will keep the root. I hv been using it to update the last few times.

Hi all, i am total noob in android phones and the note 2 (was an ardent BB fan over many years).
Quick question if you guys don't mind.
I have Mobile Odin and I have rooted me phone; what I'm absolutely unsure of is, the new 4.2 firmware when it's available, where do I head to to download it? Do i save it as a zip file in the ext SD card and install it via Mobile Odin from there? If not, please advise the how-to please.
Many thanks for helping out this total noob.
Thanks

is the new update flashable with TWRP? Or just with odin? Whats with root? do i have to unroot the n2 -> flash -> root again?

If you flash with mobile Odin, there is option to keep the root. If you flash with Odin, you must root again, which is a 3 minute process, so IMHO is not a big deal. I dunno about TWRP since I don't have custom recovery, I don't want my counter raising

Many thanks for the advice mate! Cheers
Isn't there an option in Mobile Odin (paid version) to do exactly this ?
I guess SuperSU pro has OTA survival mode, that protects root access if you use the official Samsung OTA update. Full ROM flashes via PC Odin will not preserve root, Mobile ODIN will preserve root if you select the option.
I thought that samsung disables ota updates for rooted or "Modified" systems?

I'm kinda lost what ROM your phone is at right now... Sounds like you are on 4.3 with CWM recovery, if I read right. But like I said I got lost
If on 4.3, flash the stock recovery
http://d-h.st/xFP
i317-cwm-ucubmk6-recovery.zip
Or
You could just flash this via ODIN and remove root

Right now it's on the stock touch wiz that came with the phone so I should just flash the stock recovery and everything should be right

If you truly on stock 4.3 with only custom recovery then flash the stock recovery.
The second one is full stock with only root. Root can be uninstalled. But until the update comes out don't think we're going to really know what state phone needs to be in.
