And my phone is rooted so I can't update via the phone itself. This is my first android phone and I am not sure what to do in this instance. Do I have to unroot, update via phone, and then root again? Or is there a way to just update the device and root again without needing to unroot it to begin with?

Anyone? I really don't want to go with the process of unrooting if I don't have to.

I use Kies to upgrade to 4.1.2 from a 4.1.1 root device. I just put the phone to 100% charging, and launch the upate from Kies. It's a long process, there is one rather quick download, about a minute without any activities, a windows UAC message, and another very slow download (about 2hours), and finally, a firmware copy on phone and upgrading. After that, i root again using CF-autoroot. I don't wipe or unroot before, and don't loose data after.

So Odin pro will allow me to update my rooted device?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Yes. Download the entire ROM for your region and then flash it using Mobile Odin Pro. You can also set the option to root the ROM after flash since when you flash a stock ROM you lose root. There are threads specific for Mobile Odin where you can get more details. All the best...

OTA is not possible with root, but you can update with Kies desktop even with a root phone, like i do. For me, it's the best choice, i have a branded Orange phone, and the 4.1.2 rom is the one provided by Orange, with their start/stop animation, wallpaper and system apps (TV/Deezer and so on). The only backdraw is that you must wait for your carrier to make the rom, the Orange France 4.1.2 came only last week. But finally it came, and i'm happy with the 4.1.2, no battery drain bug, i guess the exynos bug is patched, multi-window and notification toogle button editing. Not a revolution but a nice update.

So I was happy to read the Tmo GS3 finally getting JB and even happier when my phone pulled it.
However I cannot get it to install.
I'm full stock ROM. I did root via "debugfs-based Root for Galaxy S III"
The first time it failed I remembered I had programs frozen.
Unfroze them, still failed.
So I uninstalled my SuperUser app and told it to remove root.
Both Root Checker and Titanium Backup show no root access.
Update still fails.
Am I missing a step here? Or am I looking at resetting the phone to update it?
Are you updating via OTA or kies. Kies works after root. OTA not so much

OTA.
Going through the settings and telling to check (pull) the update.
Was unaware root broke that :\
I take it even though I'm not not rooted it does not matter.

I'm not seeing binary listed under about device or about device -> status.
I would get the same errors trying to update directly to my phone and instead just updated using kies and it went smooth like silk.

Camera mode right now.
Also tried with debug on and off, but Kies complains when it's off.
So I know it sees it, but does nothing when debug is on.

Ugh, I cant stand kies, personally. Never use it. Imo there is a much better, safer, nore efficient method.
You are rooted so im assuming you want to stay that way correct?
Go to the firmware thread in my sig and towards the top of the op you will see a section called root66.
Download the latest root66 firmware. Extract the file using 7zip, it should be a .tar.md5 file.
You will use Odin to flash this. If you arennt familiar with Odin, go to the 2nd post to download the latest vrrsion, 3.07. Below that you will find instructions for many different methods, find the flash in Odin one and follow the steps.
The root66 firmware is identical to the stock released by T-Mobile, except it comes pre-rooted, so you wont have to worry bout it after!
Good luck whichever way you go!

Op of that thread will tell you to do exactly what I just did a post or so ago. Just sayin that you should update your firmware before flashing custom roms.
Not required, but recommended for running the jb roms. Otherwise you dont get the full update.
Firmware via odin will update 10 partitions, custom roms only 2-3 on average.

Actually just did a factory reset to try and get the update, still fails.
EDIT:
Your way seems to be what I'm looking for.
Stock with root. Really have no interest in 3rd party ROM's unless it's Nexus style vanilla.

Tried with my laptop, still failed.
For whatever reason, stock rooted then unrooted ROM did not want to be updated either way.
Ended up going with the root66 JB option and ODIN.
Honestly was trying to avoid it, but it was really no hassle and the deed has been done.
Now to get back to restoring everything.
So it seems I've gotten myself stuck in a loop.
I have CWM, and a stock rom w/ Root. I haven't even uninstalled the bloatware, I only wanted it to pair to a PS3 controller via bluetooth.
It seems that on Saturday night, my USB micro port stopped working on the phone. There was a point it wouldn't even charge, but I got that working. I'm not sure if it's lint in the port or what, but my attempts to clean it have failed.
Because of this, I'm unable to use odin or kies to flash the phone, and the OTA update keeps failing with CWM installed. My question is, is there a way to flash the stock bootloader using the terminal (much like how I installed CWM, using recovery.img), so I can then install the OTA update, or another stock update, and possibly take my phone in for warranty? I don't even care about rooting it again.
The counter is at 0 BTW.
So I can't use the OTA update, because of CWM, but I can't remove CWM because the USB port is toast, but I can't get it warrantied because it's rooted w/ CWM. This is on a blue 32GB Bell phone.
Thanks,
LDS

He can download the update on his phone and extract it with Root Explorer or something else. And I'm assuming that you know what is Mobile ODIN.

I googled mobile ODIN - It's ODIN on the phone. I can upload the update using an FTP app, so I'm going to give it a try. Which frankly, is better than anything I've come up with.

You're my hero. This worked. It flashed away CWM, and I managed to get JB. I forgot to uncheck maintain root, but since I have the stock JB now, I could really care less at this point about my USB (as long as it continues to charge)
Kinda a noob question, but I rooted my Note 2 just mainly for the extra security and titanium backup mostly. When the new update becomes avaliable on the 19th, would updating via Kies mess up something on my phone? I get the message that my phone has been modified when I hit the software update in the about phone section of settings, would updating via Kies be possible since i get that message on my phone?
You'll have to go back to stock via odin before you can do the upgrade. Or, just wait for someone to make a custom Rom of the new firmware and flash that.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
That's what I thought. Would it be better to wait for a custom ROM of that firmware? I don't have a windows computer to use odin, and I can't find anything like it to use on a mac

I'm going to attempt doing this tomorrow with Mobile Odin Pro. That is to say I won't have to jump through hoops in order to get the update provided it's on Samsung's site tomorrow.
Is mobile odin pro worth the $5? Would that be complicated to update my phone that way?

My question is with the new update coming to 4.2, is it possible to update my firmware even though I am rooted as when I click check for updates on the phone it says I cant as I am rooted.
Will I have to un root and then upgraded (when it finaly arrives) then root again?

Don't complicate things Just download lates ROM from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and flash with Odin. Then root again, it is a 3 minute process.... you won't loose any settings, data or apps.
U can update using mobile Odin when the new 4.2 firmware when its available via samMobile. It will keep the root. I hv been using it to update the last few times.

Quick question if you guys don't mind.
I have Mobile Odin and I have rooted me phone; what I'm absolutely unsure of is, the new 4.2 firmware when it's available, where do I head to to download it? Do i save it as a zip file in the ext SD card and install it via Mobile Odin from there? If not, please advise the how-to please.

If you flash with mobile Odin, there is option to keep the root. If you flash with Odin, you must root again, which is a 3 minute process, so IMHO is not a big deal. I dunno about TWRP since I don't have custom recovery, I don't want my counter raising

Many thanks for the advice mate! Cheers
Isn't there an option in Mobile Odin (paid version) to do exactly this ?
I guess SuperSU pro has OTA survival mode, that protects root access if you use the official Samsung OTA update. Full ROM flashes via PC Odin will not preserve root, Mobile ODIN will preserve root if you select the option.

Hello XDA:
i have had a little problem updating my n7100 with the last stock room througth OTA. i have my phone rooted, but with triangle away i havey status "normal". My phone download normaly the update (70 mb) and when i acept it, the phone restart and beguin to update. When my phone is around 25% it show a error (the icon show the android logo with a warning signal) and my note start again without any update.
Someone have the same problem? I know that i can update it with odin or samsung kies, but i prefere OTA (i have a lot of chooses and it will be a hard work to save)
Thanks in advance and my best regards!

+1 Same here.
Just forget the OTAs when you're rooted. I couldn't make OTA work on my Nexus 7 which is stock Google, and Samsung is way more complicated. Just find the right ROM on Samy mobile and flash via Odin. Easy as pie. You won't lose any apps or data or settings.
