[Q] Repairing Note 2 without voiding warranty - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Sorry if the following is a really dumb question - I am new to the forum and new to tinkering with android phones. I find it really hard to understand the jargon being used on here so there is a good chance my question has been answered and I don't know it. Also a lot of the discussion seems to be about rooted phones and mine is not rooted so I don't know where to start.
Yesterday my unrooted Note 2 froze on the start up screen and will only switch off when the battery is removed. I tried recovery mode for clearing the cache and then wiping user data and niether have made any difference. I just get a cascade of red "E: failed to mount" messages.
I guess this is either a bug in the firmware or the internal storage is fried. I can send it off for repair and be without my phone for 3 weeks but I though I should try to reinstall the firmware.
My question is "will trying this invalidate my warranty?". Specifically should I try the following webpage
theunlockr.com/2013/04/06/how-to-unroot-the-samsung-galaxy-note-2-gt-n7100/
Obviously the last thing I want to do is invalidate my warranty when I am about to need it the most.
I am on Orange in the UK if that helps.

Using odin to install a official Samsung firmware (you'll probably need the Orange one), should not invalidate you're warranty.
Probably the best place for you to head is the firmware section of sammobile, type in your model and find the firmware for your country and carrier.

Thanks for the help and again sorry for the dumb question. I just don't want to take any risks at this point because whatever I do I may not get the chance to undo.
I can't find anything specific to my carrier (UK Orange) is it enough to use another one from the same country. Perhaps this is what the unspecified one is (BTU). Does it matter?

BTU is the generic uk unbranded firmware...did you're phone have specific Orange branded firmware before it crashed?

Ah if its just branding I'm not bothered about it. For what its worth I don't think there was any branding. Cheers for all your help madpete :good:

Not a problem, hopefully reflashing the firmware will sort it out for you.

Sadly it didn't. The flashing completed as normal but at the end the phone was the same. I suppose its the warranty route for me.

So back to 100% stock did nada? Try one more time for ****s and giggles but then its off to manufacturers warranty la-la land

Can you tell me how you sent it off? Using what, and when they said you will get it back? Also did you have to pay for shipping too?
I'm on O2 and mines having issues + It needs to be sent off.

Sent my phone off last week but saw something a bit worrying about my attempt at repair. There is a custom ROM counter right? That counts the attempts at flashing the ROM. Will what I did change the counter? I didn't reset it before sending off so am I going to have a problem?

I got the phone from phones 4U so I just handed it to them to send off. If I had dealt with it with Samsung directly they would have either sent over a courier or they would have send me an envelope to send it it. If O2 gave you the phone you can call them or perhaps walk into one of their shops to get it repaired under warranty ... or you can call the Samsung service center. I think either will do.

Tmobile manufacture warranty?

I just got my galaxy s2 a month ago and was wondering, if I get a hardware defect or brick, will Tmobile replace It as long as its the first year on contract? That is what happened about 4 years ago with my other phone but I would like to know if Tmobile will still do this.
Thanks

Rooting voids your warranty. If they can *see* its been rooted, you will be charged a restocking fee of $400+

It's best you go through Samsung, from eat I've heard, as they not really check if you're phones been rooted

Well...i got mine about a couple months. They told me they could replace the phone only if phone has not been software or hardware modified..as i understand...only if they see phone is like when they gave it to u @ very first time. There is a way to restore ur phone and unroot it. So make sure u dowload the .tar file and keep it in PC in case u need to flash stock rom...via Odin before send phone to replace it....or any other similar situation. Follow the link at the bottom.
If u pay insurance Samsung will replace ur phone even if its stolen or lost. In that case u have to pay $150 in order to get a new one. Sorry about my english. ...just trying to help. Good luck.

I've heard of T-Mobile replacing the phone at the cost of the $130 for Tier 3 Smart Phones, but Samsung replacing them? I haven't heard of that.
Hmm...I voided my options the day I got mine, Lol.

I bought the insurance.
Thing is,everything in writing,it seems nothing is covered.
I spoke with tmo,and the insurance, and they both said "no matter what happens (excluding rooting/roms) "
Is covered. But in writing, nothing they said seems to be covered.
From my understanding tmo will replace the phone if its less than a year. But tmo is in financial hardship so who knows what they will do.
Im still waiting on a $30 credit for stuff I never purchased.
Forgive my English...
But,Im just illiterate.
Just go back to stock.its easy.

Samsung warranties their devices for 1 year, it has nothing to do with tmobile. Return your device to stock and get a new one if there is a problem. If it's hard bricked tmobile cant tell what you've done to it, anyways. They send it to sammy and they jtag it and it goes back into circulation as a refurb.

But note, the flash counter is only changed when you flash roms through Odin. Any roms flashed through Clockwork Recovery will not add to the counter. Just adding on to what you said.

This is somewhat true. Some custom kernels such as cm kernel can add to the counter even if flashed through CWM.

Help! Phone not turning on

Hey guys,
I am having an issue with my phone. I had CM10-M2 running on my phone and I didnt like it that much because I missed some of the stock features so I decided I would flash the foxhound 1.3 rom that just came out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708371 that one.
I followed the instructions and did everything that was recommended.
The phone turned off and now won't even go into recovery or anything. Just a black screen.
Please help!
ps the phone is on Rogers and is an i747ma
Thanks,
Zach
Edit: I dont know what this means but when I take the battery out and plug it in the red light comes on but still nothing else

Welp ****. I took it to Rogers but since I bought it off of kijiji they couldnt do anything. It was bought on October 2nd and they said I couldnt even send it for repair because it wasnt registered to me.
I called Samsung and they said to ship it for a repair but even if they can't repair it, they couldnt replace it. The lady said she would have to tell Rogers to replace it but Rogers already said they wouldnt.

Seems like you should research more before flashing roms. If you find out how to fix your phone be more careful next time. If you aren't sure always ask in the Q&A section. A comment from a user can save your phone.

Unroot/Stock? Sending phone to Samsung for repairs

Hi. I'm having issues with the charge port on my t989 and have a ticket to send back to Samsung for repairs. I'm currently running CM 10 rooted, which steps should I take before sending back? Should I unroot and also go back to stock ICS? If so, which guide should I look at? Thanks in advance!
This might help.
thanks. can anyone advise if they found it more preferable to send directly back to Samsung or work with T-Mobile in resolving hardware issues?

If you still have warranty and/or insurance then go with T-Mobile. They usually send the replacement device in a day or two and give you the return label to send the defective one back to them. Be sure to return them in time or they charge an outrageous fine. Hope this helps!

For what it's worth, I've sent about 10 phones back to T-Mobile over the course of 5 years...including cliq, g1, my touch, htc g2, gs, gs2, all of them were at least rooted to remove bloat ware at a minimum. I left them rooted and some even still loaded with whatever custom rom due to massive hardware failure. All covered under warranty and not once have I had a charge or anything said to me by T-Mobile.
All of my phones were also bought outright, no contract. I can't stand the subsidized contract crap and TMO treats you much nicer when you don't have a contract.

If you follow this guide, you can download the right rom for your device
Your rom is one of from Argentina /Chile /Panama /Uruguay or Trinidad
But not necessary you have to flash from same

The reason this question came up is because I have 4.1.1
And the emmc checker says that I have the chip that's vulnerable.
I didn't want to update to 4.1.2 initially because of people's reports of bad battery life. That's the primary reason I got this phone, for it's battery life.
But now reading about SDS, is making me think I shouldn't take the risk. So I was asking so I know how to update it (as I ignored the update notification on the phone, and now it's saying I'm up to date, which I'm not obviously).
Dont take the risk just find the latest dma6 rom and flash it as I was on the same bOat and I just flashed it. Evantually they will sort the battery life issues as I think its a small price to pay against to having a bricked phone if you dont have a valid local warranty as most international phones dont come with one .

It is the latest official 4.1.2 for note 2 I used the one for Turkey . You ll find Dr. Ketans thread with all the firmwares or get it from sammobile. Dma6 is not that bad. I had an amazing battery life with my pre ll7 4.1.1 rom but since started with dma6 it is still good. I rather safe to be than sorry and yes if you were to ask me it is shambells FOR samsung to release an ill hardware on such expensive piece. Considering you can get a very decent laptop for the same if not less money anyhow thats my two pence.

[Q] Hard brick Problem with UCUFNE4 modem on UCUEMJB bootloader

Hi
I have a d2att phone which was having some problems to catch the signals
So I had decided to update the bootloader and the modem to the latest version as installing stock etc did not help. I was on CM 11 when the following happened
In a hurry to check if the new modem works or not I forgot to install the new bootloader
now the phone is hard bricked. Does nothing except showing up as qhsusb_dload when connected to computer
I tried a few debrick images in the forum but none of them worked
already consulted with some experts here but no solution in sight
If anyone has the latest modem and bootloader can you provide me with the debrick image
There is no way to recover from this type of hard brick right now. I am very sorry...

Nope. If you dig back through the debrick thread there are several debrick.img files already. None have worked on that type of brick. You are more than welcome to try though. Its not like it will make things worse!
I am sorry to hear this happened and that I can't really help....

You can send it out for JTAG. I previously used a service on ebay for $28. They got the phone to turn on but was unable to fix the bootloader and the IMEI was unknown. Everytime they tried to fix it, it would hard brick again.
Unfortunately, I ended up following another poster's suggestion and replaced the motherboard. I got a cheap broke s3 phone from ebay for $40 and replaced my motherboard with that one.
Good luck.
The problem for which you used JTAG was a different one or was it this only?

your phone needs either a new emmc or motherboard. It can alternately be used as a paper weight mine weighs 7 Oz with an otterbox on it. Seriously this type of hard bricking you have done to your phone is not fixable. Replace the phone, the motherboard or the emmc.

This model is not sold in India that is why a spare part would be difficult. I dont think importing should be a problem. I'll let you know what happens
I think I saw a couple in the last few days that were going for about $40-60 (US). They were both used devices with broken displays, but the listing claimed the IMEI was clean and device was otherwise fully functional.
