I've used it on my Nexus 4 for a while. I don't really think it saves me a lot of battery, but I think it does a much better job at auto brightness than the stock algorithm.

I just got my ZL today and even at the lowest setting, this screen is BRIGHT! I love it. Not sure how much battery it drains, so Lux could help with negative brightness values (if they work on the ZL). I have not installed Lux on it yet.

Maximum brightness eats up my GNex battery. Normal?

After I changed it to minimum setting, my GNex survive from morning until the end of work without charging at all and it's still have 56% battery (normal use: up to 50MB data download, messaging, one or two calls, 9 hours or more screen time).
Is it normal that brightness is the most heavy resource eating the battery?
Um... yes.

Bro yeah. It does kill more battery.

Turn the brightness way down.

Obviously it will kill less battery. But 9 hours screentime is pretty crazy..

In a jealous way.

9 hours and still 50%+ is also a blatant lie unless you have a 812948712mAh battery ducttaped to the phone...
I can get 9 hours of screen time no prob! (if my phone is plugged in the whole time) :cyclops:
Just look at your battery life report after 1 day of usage. Its blatantly clear that the screen is the biggest battery drain on the device.
Also calling BS on 9 hours of screen on time.
Yeah I think he meant... 9 hours overall not screen on time. That would only be possible on 0% brightness on a black screen.

I swear I had it.
Will put the screenshot if I have time later on.
The screen is huge for a phone. It uses battery to light up.

Dude that's first-day stuff. Brighter the screen = more power being used. Avoid auto brightness too, all that constant adjusting of brightness is no good for your batt either. Just toggle it as needed

Or if you have one of those roms where you can slide your finger across to manually adjust the brightness when needed, it helps save a little on battery life. But the days when you could just check the auto brightness box and be all good (ics) are no more now that jb is here. Even with that checked, you still have a screen that's bright as heck and devouring your battery.

I can't relate to any of that. Auto-brightness is fine, always has been. And there is no difference in screen brightness from ics to jb.
I read almost everywhere that auto brightness is not good for battery but never tested it.
May have to do with the sensor. I've never liked auto brightness, personally. I usually set mine at like 30% during the day and 0% before I go to bed.

Battery Drain

Anyone else experiencing massive battery drain when their screen is on?
Not with the backlight off. No. With it on yes

I dont see it under display. My brightness is set to basically 20% if that helps.

Ya there's no auto brightness setting... weird right?
I also have massive drain from my screen even with bravia engine off and brightness down.
Honestly im thinking this phone just has really bad battery life haha. Its unfortunate because i love the phone.
Maybe I've just been spoiled by the battery life of my Atrix4g haha.

I had an Atrix and an Atrix 2. Battery life was good, and bad.
It all depends on how you use. Use it a lot and always have the screen on it's going to go fast. I have a friend who can get a couple days off her Ion.
Let it die. Plug it in, leave it on the charger until it's full. I did that and noticed a HUGE difference in battery life.

Ya mine varied quite a bit by rom too.. I had fantastic life on my atrix with a customized version of CM7.2.
Ya thats true, i actually resorted to looking at quite a lot of reviews and run down tests and ive never seen so many mixed reviews haha... some said it was terrible some said it was solid.
It all depends on how you use the phone my Sk17i (Xperia mini pro) can make through 1 day by draining at least 5% without using it (custom Rom obviously xD)

It doesn't actually decrease the brightness. It only applies a great filter over it so things appear less bright. It doesn't actually save battery on LCD IPS displays. Only on amoled displays.

Stop... MUFFIN TIME!!!
Yeah it just puts a filter over and makes everything darker. Brightness level is the same
Yeah the only way to save energy is to dim the backlight which isn't what this app does.

But it's still a great app though I'm glad to have it back after 4.2 broke it. It's a life saver on the eyes.

You are right guys. It is very little effect. I am giving a try to lux automatic backlight. This seems to work fine.
Try screendim. I use it at nights when its too bright to read.

So what are you saying, brightness level on the Nexus 7 has ho effect on battery life? I am confused.
Rootdim actually dims the backlight.

What is your preferred brightness level?

Auto is too dim for me so i set it around 79%. Higher brightness hurts my eyes but maybe I just need to get used to it?
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app
I turned off auto and set the brightness to 100%. I love a bright screen. So far 17 hours on battery, 2 hours screen time, and still at 50%. Good enough for me.

Turn off the lights.
I keep it always on 100%. Only when I need to save the battery I lower it.
Would love to get more input.
I simply use auto brightness. Bright screens look better but they strain my eyes too much.
I keep it at 50% and thats super bright for me... Keeping it 100 sounds insane
Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
Apparently I'm in the minority so far. I hate screens that are too bright for the setting they're in. I keep mine at absolute minimum (0%?) unless an increase in ambient light makes it hard to see. Then I increase it as little as possible until it's at similar visibility as it was before the ambient light increase.
i keep mine at 50% also, i could see doing 60% if i really needed it but anything over that would be overkill IMO.
I use auto
auto 100%
I use Lux app. Check the PlayStore and see if it might work for you.
You guys no you can adjust the contrast.
Sent from my: T- Mobile LG G3
80% most of the time. I adjust when/if I need to.
Usually <50% indoors and >70% outdoors. The best way to make it learn what you like is to use LUX app.

auto brightness

Running your pixel 2 xl on auto brightness is good or bad? Does it use more or less battery?

It doesn't use much battery compared to Adaptive Brightness off unless you keep your screen at something low like 10% or less the whole time.

I've always, even with previous phones, used manual brightness. Partly because I am usually happy with brightness to be kept at, for this device, at 15% and if I need to adjust Ill use Brightness Control. I also feel that battery life must surely be better as the sensor isn't constantly being used to gauge how bright the screen should be and lastly always found autobrightness to increase/decrease the screen brightness randomly, e.g. Say in my living room and it'll just increase/decrease slightly.
So ultimately I'm very happy just to manually adjust

Mine is set to.20% with auto brightness enabled. At most times it hovers very close to 20%. I guess if i disabled auto brightness i will get better battery life. At the moment i average 7 hrs SOT.
So what do you achieve in terms of SOT at 15% brightness
