Does it matter which Radio version I have in my DHD? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a DHD. I just checked the baseband version and it shows 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03_M. It has root, s-off and a custom rom (i change roms regularly trying them all to find the right one for me).
I have another stock DHD that I currently use as my daily phone and the baseband version in it is 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M.
Physically both phones are identical just one rooted with s-off and a custom rom and the other straight stock.
I assume the baseband version is the same as the Radio version.
Does it matter what baseband version I have? Will an old baseband version mean some functions in a rom won't work?
When flashing a new rom does that flash the radio as well or does that have to be done separately?
I've read the instructions in the Dev RADIO thread about how to flash but just need to know if it's necessary.
cheers
EDIT: Just one other thing:
Is the radio version more relevant to the kernel or the rom? I often flash a new rom but try different kernels with it.

Radio are region based not rom based. Flashing a rom will not change the radio. Its something you do separately. Changing the radio wont give you that wow factor so if it ain't broken don't fix it. The .03 radio is the old att radio their latest is the .11 some dev's may suggest a radio for their rom but again radios are based on your location. So like If your in the US and dev is in Asia you would not use a radio from Asia.
Changing roms is a pretty simple thing no real risk in bricking phone but changing radios is a whole new ball game in itself with possible damaging phone for good. If you deside to change radio I would suggest to make sure its in pd98img zip form and flash thru hboot not recovery.

wow that is interesting. My DHD was locked to the vodafone network in Australia and to get root and s-off I ran the hack kit which I assume put the current radio on it because I am definitely in Australia and nothing to do with ATT.
I know the hack kit downgraded me first so maybe that's how I got an ATT radio.
BTW I thought the safest way to flash a radio was to download the radio.img file and flash it through USB from my PC connected to my DHD?

Yes you can adb it but I myself find it safer the other way.

Just to add, i have noticed myself with the newer radio i use a.t.m. i have a little better reception (very little).
But is consumes less battery and wifi wont crap out.
But like Reinaldo said "If it ain't broke don't try to fix it"...

thanks for the advice guys.

I notice that the android-info.txt inside the latest radio Radio 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M only applies to cid number CWS__001. My DHD is a vodafone australia.
Do I assume correctly that if I was to attempt to flash this radio on my DHD that either
A. It would not flash and I would get an error of Incompatible device or something similar
B. I would brick my DHD
C. It would flash and be fine.
Which is the most likely?
If this radio doesn't work on my DHD what is the latest radio for a vodafone australia DHD?
cheers

I flashed Radio 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M using the PD98IMG.zip on Hboot.
It works perfect on both Telstra & Vodafone Au:good:

Same here 3 au no issue.

Quick question regarding ROMs and Radios

A8183 and A8181 both flash the same.
Just make sure you follow the process.
I'm thinking if you have an A8183 it's probably Telstra branded, in which case you'll need a gold card as well.
All the instructions for these things are in the sticky at the top of this thread.
FYI, I have the Telstra branded Desire and am running Defrost with the latest radio and have no issues. I've also run a few Modaco ROMs on the older radio.
apparently you dont need to goldcard with the new unrevoked 3.1 (http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/)
at least i didn't and i can load up other roms and stuff...
i also loaded up the newest radio firmware (32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08)and everything looks to be working...
im on telstra as well...

[Q] updating radio

I got an Incredible off a guy and now want to flash it to cricket.
I have not even rooted the phone yet it's on stock vzw but I saw in hboot the radio is 2.15.00.xx (forgot what), but isn't this the radio I am supposed to supposedly update to? I don't want to flash a radio over this one and brick it, so I am wondering what the deal is, did VZW update their stock radio at some point?
the cricket ROM in dev says to have this radio so I just want to make sure Im all gravy.
Flashing a radio over itself doe not brick the phone. There was only one leak, which was a patch file, that would result in a brick if flashed twice.
2.15.00.7.28 is the stock radio for the Incredible after it's upgraded to Froyo.

thanks, so that's what it was then. I guess I don't need the patched radio then and can flash any ROM in the upgrade forum with this radio.
I was wondering about this too... So I can flash whatever radio over whatever other radio I need to and (without the regular risk of radio-flash bricking), be ok-more or less?
Maybe a better way to phrase this is, how do I know if I'm flashing a radio patch, or a full radio file? I have the files from the Radio thread - are those full radio files, not patches?
Thanks!

[Q] Radio Question

Hi,
Just got my HTC Desire HD, downgraded from 1.72 and rooted with the CM7 ROM installed.
I still have the stock radio which came with the phone which is - 12.28b.60.140eP_26.03.02.15_M3.
My question is - I've checked the latest radio thread out but I'm a bit confused as to which one I need to ensure that my device remains unlocked?
Can someone point to me in the right direction please? Also, what is the problem in not upgrading the radio - are there any major issues that can occur?
Thanks for everyone's help.
Dan.

if you have installed cyanogenmod 7 yo should flash the recommended radio for this rom...
but its relative,,,,, also the good performance depends of various factors... bettwen that is your location..there are recommended radios depending of your location...
the best advice... you can try some radios (cm7 recommended.... recommended for your location...) and compare if the signal strenght of the phone, wifi, 3g etc its worse or better...
but when you go to download a radio IMPORTANT:::: check md5 checksum
flash it with the most harmless method that you know, like fastboot commander...

be careful mate..... a badly use of radios or flashing it wrong can brick the phone
So it doesn't matter what radio you get to maintain an unlocked phone?

[Q] HTC Desire Radio Queries

Am using radio image "5.09.05.30_2", am considering flashing latest radio "5.17.05.23". Is there a requirement that I need to flash RIL too. Also is there any chances that flashing a radio might brick the device. Currently I am using Insert Coin Ginger sense ROM 1.0.8.

Hi, I was originally on 5.09 and went first to 5.14 and then to 5.17. I have never flashed an RIL so I guess it is not a requirement. Having read quite a bit about flashing radios I would say that there is a chance of bricking but it seems that everyone will warn you about this to cover their ass. To avoid bricking it seems you need to make sure that the MD5 check sum is correct and and it should be fine.
Battery life and signal have seemed better since the flashing!

[Q] Advice for 1st time radio flash

Hi all,
I'm fairly new to the world of rooting/custom ROMS - I rooted my Desire HD a couple of weeks ago and have installed a couple of ROMS since then (start on ice cold sandwich and curerntly on JellyTime). So far it's going well, but my wiFi signal does not seem to be very good. I know that installing a different radio may help with this, but I wanted to get a bit of help before doing this.
I've read the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597 which contains the guide for flashing a radio.
What I want to know is what radio should I be using? Is it ROM/phone/carrier specific? I don't want to flash the wrong radio then not be able to go back, especially since I've made it this far without bricking my phone! Also, could flashing a new radio improve my wiFi signal?
Thanks,
Simon
I recently flashed radio as well.
I did it with this one :
http://d-h.st/T1X
My problem was that when calling the other side heard them self twice. And its gone
and yes, It got a lot to do with wifi, 3G, calling. and most of your connectivity .

Radios are not EDIT: ROM, or carrier specific, but their performance is affected by region. They do affect wifi. If you are in the US, there is a newer radio in the radio thread out that I have used. Though it didn't improve anything for me, it didn't break anything either. You can also take note of your current radio in Settings - About phone, and download that radio from the radio thread.

In addition to what Bananagranola said, if you flash ENG S-OFF and your device was shipped with Gingerbread you will mess your bootloader and radio won't be the main concern then.
You can flash a radio in the PD98IMG.zip way (wich is the safest way to do it) or flash modified ENG S-OFF included in the Hack Kit and after that you can find the radio threads links in the guide in my signature.
Make sure that you read carefully those threads. Flashing a wrong radio might brick your device.

Radios are phone specific but I get what you meant. Desire and inspire can flash each others radios. Don't want to flash any non ace radios though as it can truly brick your phone.

Yeah, sorry, that was misleadingly phrased. I edited my earlier post.
Thanks for all the replies. I'm starting to understand! I'm in the UK, so I guess I would need to get a UK radio. How often are they updated? When I've looked around, there only seem to be a few available.
My current radio is 26.10.04.03_M Can I improve on that?
Also, I read on the LeeDroid thread that you need to make sure the radio is compatible with the ROM, but bananagranola said it's not ROM specific...who's right??! Is it a case of, when I find a radio I want to use, I post it in the ROM thread to ask if they are compatible?
Thanks.
Just try different ones out. All inspire/desire radios can be used its just a matter of how well they will work. Leedroid was just pointing that fact out. It's not that it won't work or that it will mess up your device in trying. I use 26.17.14.11 and it works for every Rom I use. You are currently using an inspire radio so you might give the one I use a try. It's also an inspire radio. But if it doesn't then you can always try another. It's good to give it about 24 hours to settle unless it just outright makes something worse like battery or signal.

Thanks for all the advice. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - had a little issue with a bricked tablet (all fixed now though
I guess the next steps for me are to take a nandroid backup and try some out!
If I'm back on here with more questions it means something went wrong... :cyclops:
