I am about 9 days into the purchase and may regret having done so. To keep this brief, I have never seen so many things that don't work right, out of the box. Mostly force closes on some key apps I have. However, the thing that is most irritating is the internal storage. I just went back to stock MDL, to sortof start from the beginning, but (and since I can't use Root Explorer atm) Estrongs file explorer still shows 8.37 GB's used out of 9.62. I get the thing where we really don't get 16 GB's, but I am looking at what is on the internal and I can't see anything at all that is using anything close to that much space. Is it correct that apps don't show up in a file explorer, and is that likely what is taking up all the space? Regardless, this is nuts. I can't be jockeying around with trying to free up a GB or two just to nandroid the stock ROM for the next two years or however long I have this. I was rooted and had installed a custom ROM or two since I got it, but I tried to nandroid the stock ROM before flashing AOKP last night, and it would not let me due to the internal card being full. Has anybody else experienced this, and figured out how to free up some significant space? Last couple of things: for when I am rooted, does anybody know how to get fix permissions in ROM Manager to work? I keep getting "error trying to run privileged commands". Has anybody gotten My Backup Pro to actually do a full backup? Finally, having gone back to MDL, isn't that what the phone "upgraded" to when I first turned it on, and am I now able to bring it back without concern of the warranty being voided?
Something must be wrong between your shoes & the phone...just saying.

Lots of force-closes? On a custom ROM or OEM? Either way, be sure to FULLY WIPE when you do either...99.9999999% of n00b foolishness quoting "this phone is a piece of junk bla bla bla" stems from not following instructions properly, or just missing a key procedure.
Samsung have spent MANY millions developing this phone, rest assured that they've had any number of tards try to do stupid things with it to find it's weaknesses...hardware OR software.
Btw, why are you trying to have ROM Manager fix any permissions? Do you have expressed instruction to do so or is it an old habit from Android 2.2x days? Otherwise don't do it.
The storage is horrible. The external sd card if basically useless; you cant move apps and you cant backup directly to external sd. I'm returning the S4 tomorrow and going back to the S2.

You can't backup what? Nandroids? Yes you can. I don't know how you can fill up 9gb with apps but if you did then maybe you should get a different phone or wait for the 32gb version

Read what I wrote. 3 backups and I'm already maxed out, and I debloated before I backed up. Beautiful phone but I like the S2 a helluva lot more.
Update: Finally was able to save a backup to the external sd card. Keeping the S4

I don't know where you guys get your information from, of course you can make nandroid backups and restore from
external sdcard using the latest CWM or TWRP recoveries, and of course you can flash roms and install APK apps
from either the internal sdcard or the external sd card.
You just need to get better acquainted with the file system in the Galaxy S4.
It is way different than the file system on the Galaxy S2 or S3.
Good Luck

Thanks for nothing. The subheading of this section is "HELP and troubleshooting", not butt wupping. How are my storage woes solved if there is not enough space on the internal card to then try to transfer it to the external, regardless of how large it is? Glad to know that you have it all together and never needed a hand to understand something. Oh, and BTW, good for you that you apparently don't have any "tards" in your family or in anybody's you know. Karma, dude.

With TWRP I get an almost instant failed when backing up to external. CWM took so long [easily 3 x longer than S2] I restarted. Finally I let it go about 20 min and it completed. Restore worked too. I've had trouble getting OUDHS to backup external and where I can see the file. With CWM I can at least see the file, renaming it though seems to screw up restore. OUDHS is the fastest, hope I can get it to work as needed.
UPDATE: just finished backing up with OUDHS & think I found the file. I had to install CWM recovery first, save to external so I have a backup folder created under clockworkmod and now OUDHS saves to that folder. Before it was nowhere to be found. Nice.

I've got nearly 120 apps installed, all downloaded from the play store, nearly 7GB free space left on internal storage. How many apps etc do you have installed? Or do you mean that the performance of the internal card is horrible?
I backed up to external 3 times now; ROM Manager, MyBackup & Titanium all allow it.
Is Apps2SD not available for the S4?
You might miss some of the speed of the S4 if you go back to the S2
Also keep in mind that they may not take it back for a refund or anything in the worst case. It is likely that you've got to pay the 75$ restocking fee.
Edit: duh, you've already answered yourself, my bad. Tho keep in mind keeping 1 or 2 ROM backups is usually enough, unless you're developing really hardcore.

Relax, I wasn't referring to you as a tard, I meant the many unsuspecting randomly chosen folks charged with road-testing early development S4's...you know, the product surveying/market research boffins.
What you did describe previously sounds a heck of a lot like a missing step here or there. I've been there often, with a phone acting wonky, until I found it was all my dumb mistakes bc I didn't bother to RTFM enough. Don't take the internet so seriously, after all the internet is full of cynical bastards like myself.

I had pretty much the exact same issues. CWM now works just fine.
There is mention that on the S4 / 4.2.2, file storage is encrypted and hidden if I remember correctly.

I got about 71 apps & now that I figured out how to get my backups on external I got a little over 8gb on internal. I can live with that. The internal memory performance is fine, it was the limited space I was griping about. Apps2SD and similar programs won't work on S4 or S3 I believe. S2 is good to go depending on ROM. I think my backing up to external problem was due to using an 8gb card for testing instead of a larger one. Once I put in a 32gb it was off to the races
You're right about the speed, the S4 blows the doors off the S2. Restoring my sms' was 10x faster. And I got a sick odex theme so I'm mostly stock but thoroughly themed.
And with Tmobile the restock fee is $50, not bad if you're not happy with the phone
So here is my issue...
I've backed up with OUDHS the first day i had the phone and without a sdcard on it... Now I cant find the backup folder and my internal storage is completely empty but when i check on the PC it has 3gb of used space! How is it possible? My only guess is that the backup is somewhere in there but i cant find it at all.... I've looked with root explorer and nothing!
Any ideas?

Hello all, I have refered to this site many times and now need assistance with my MT3G
First off, thank you zeubea and the rest for all your work. I tried to ask my question in the developers section but...
I hope you see this post and can guide me along.
Background: I'm ok w pc's, have built and repaired/recovered my own for sometime. But this phone stuff is new teritory to me.
I got my slide mebbe 3 yrs ago? But as phones go I have yet to find one that I like as much. The key board captures my hunt n peck thumb style intuitivly. The weight and feel, and size, seems as right as can be, for me. The only thing I disliked was the carrier
I had studied, and studied this site and others trying to learn how to root. This isnt the best phone to learn on huh lol. So after asking several associated at outlet malls (soory, we can't assist you with that type of request) I found a guy at a pc store that confidently said "no problem, we can take care of that for you." Awesome! The price, $120 US. worth it to me.
2 weeks later, my phone was ready. He did great, I will lay out the specs below. But, when I asked if he could now do it again for less having done it once, his reply was " man, that was a @#$&^, I wont do it again, you have the only one that will come from our shop, but I assure you that you wont find anything like it at starbucks..." Wow...
So first, heres what I have, and then my problem..
Build number is: cm_espresso-userdebug 4.0.4 IMM76L
eng.zuebea.20120618.005058 test-keys
Version: 9-20120617-UNOFFICIAL-espresso
That probably tells you alot of where the phone is. In its apps screen I see dev toolsrom manager and superuser, along with several others.
The phone appears to function as described by the others at the same stage ie: the fn key works as long as it is held when using, no keyboard backlight wifi calling f/c's 4 times upon boot up (I LUV that little guy ) Screen keyboard a bit cut off etc...
So my problem: I was not provided a sdcard when I received my phone. Coulda sworn there was an 8 gb in it when I left it, but oh well. I have a new 8 gb sd card, sandisk. but dont know what to do. I dont want to lose the work that went into this phone. But I cant seem to download any apps from the market or play store
ALSO, I dont currently have a sim card, I plan on getting a pay as I go plan when I get this figured out.
I am unsure about the whole partitioning the sd card thing, as well as how to do it, and wether it is done with cwm or what? The guy who did it suggested titanium back up, but again, cant download. ( Yes I do have wifi at home and it connnects and browes internet superbly)
I have formatted the sd card to fat32, and see all sorts of apps running in cache.
I believe that is about it. I know this is a long read, but I wanted to be clear so you could assist. Thank you...
EDIT: I was assured that we did get S off..,.
update
New guy still here, and for all my reading, I dont feel my confidence level has increased any as far as messin with this phone. I kno I can do it once it all makes sense and maybe after a run thru it will seem easy.... "sigh", any input from you who have been there done that will be greatly appreciated.
Since my above post (this makes #2, 8 to go ), heres whats progressed.
I bought a T-Mob pay as you go SIm card and can now call and text with my phone. That much seems to work fine. I have a 8 gb micro sd card installed which was formatted fat 32 on my pc first. Befor I got the sim card, the phone would appear to download apps but they would never actually load, just went thru the motions. Now, with the sim installed, I get this dialog box from google stating several possible reasons that I'm not getting nothing from them at this time. Well I think I know what the problem is, just dont know how to fix it, which brings me to the last bit of update to include. I was able to get a reply from zeubea himself, and tho it was short and sweet, and I appreciate that he took time at all to assist, I am in need of help understanding what to do...
zeubea said:
it is possible you have to reinstall the last version of cm9 for espresso and gapps, with proper wipes of /data /system and dalvik chache an /sdcard partitioning is no necessary for a testing setting. /sdcard partitioning is made with CWM

So I am guessing its gapps that is preventing me from downloading apps. What I am asking for is a step by baby step proceedure, taking me by my hand and guide me thru all this so I learn without messing up. Please, if anyone can make sense of all this and assist, I'll be the most humble student ever...
Thank you...
As far as I am aware you don't need to root the phone after its been rooted (unless you flash T-mobile's kernel .. but lets not get ahead of ourselves). Rooting unlocks the phone's admin and allows you to install and uninstall things you wouldn't be able to without admin control. However, rooting does NOT unlock a network locked phone. There are some ways to do this I'm sure, but rooting a phone itself would not automatically unlock it from a network if it was locked to begin with. Now lets assume your phone is both rooted and network unlocked. Now you can install custom ROMS (Operating Systems), etc.
I would highly recommend you download Cyanogenmod over other custom ROMs in terms of stability, ease of use and beginner-user friendly. You can get it here -> link. This guide by the CM team gives full instructions -> link.
Most custom ROMs come without the Google Apps. To download and install apps, you need Google Play Story (previously known as Google Market), though other ways to install exist as well but are slightly more complicated. When you install a custom ROM, in most cases, you also need to install Google Apps AFTER installing the ROM. You do this the same way as installing a ROM, through CWM (Clockwork Mod recovery). Do you know how to do this? Read the guide above for details. Depending on what Android Version you have, you need to download the appropriate gapps (Google Apps) file and flash (i.e install) that after the ROM. This should install Market (or as its now known, Play) on your phone and will let you install apps.
You don't need an SD card to install. But this phone is notorious for its small space. Just turn the phone off (to be safe), take the battery cover off and insert an SD card into the phone. After boot, it should recognise and be able to use your card normally. It will not effect anything and you can move some apps to your SD card to save some space. However, this doesn't save as much as possible and so some users partition the SD card and use Apps or scripts to make the phone use the SD card as an extension of its phone memory and free up space.
I know whats a lot of information but do have a look at the link and then if you have any more questions, ask. Its quite easy to root and you really shouldn't have to pay someone (especially such a high amount) just to root your phone.
I hope I've been helpful. If so, don't forget the Thanks button!
Just wondering if you guys enable compression to save space when making nandroids on twrp. I have never done it and want to try but wanted to see how many people do it.

I do it every time. Why wouldn't you want your backups compressed? It lowers their size so you save some room on internal or external

nope none that i see and yes i have restored the compressed backups before. Only problem is after you restore a compressed backup it gets uncompressed and goes back to the size it would be if you didnt compress it. But all you would have to do is delete it that backup and make a new compressed backup
well sure. it takes longer on both ends (compression and decompression) but its seriously minor. I always used it and restoring has never proven a problem yet.
Good deal, thanks for the feedback. I'm backing up right now and chose to compress it. I'll be interested to see how big it is compared to an older backup and how much space it actually saves.
I compress mine, longest its taken so far was 420seconds to do the whole setup with about 300apps installed. A basic backup of a rom takes me 190seconds. One thing I haven't noticed is my backups themself being decompressed after restore, but I don't pay much attention cuz I usually delete and make a fresh one just so its more current.

Twrp on the gs3 is a different build than my other devices they are all on twrp2.x and the gs3 is twrp3.1.0 so they may have disabled it by default on the newer builds

I would certainly not zip a nandroid backup (at least not the one you carry on your device in case of need). Besides taking more time and work for the process, there are two major drawbacks. Imagine the necessary storage space to be not sufficient for the decompression, you would have first to estimate the needed space to free, then search and decide which files to get rid of, while counting the sum it frees and then perform the unzip. Now the worst and most probable situation.. If you need a restore it's likely that you get a system failure. So what if wou're not able to decompress first?

Twrp has the option built in to enable compression. You don't zip it yourself. The answer is, it's simply a preference. It's also advised to save twrp backups off device, in external sd or flash drive, even on a PC. Device storage never enters the equation. You can restore backups directly from said storage devices.
So again, simply a preference. You didn't "annoy me. That's a fairly arrogant assumption. I just thought it odd to attempt to answer a question that no one has queried in years.
@madbat99 Of course there is also to save a backup somewhere else, I mentionned especially the one we carry for emergency after reading a previous post

Emergency backups should be on external sd. What if /data is corrupted? Backup is lost. Who would ever run device storage so close to full that a decompressed backup wouldn't fit, if it fit while compressed? Your device would run horribly.
So many issues would be solved if people would just maintain healthy device habits. Don't run right at storage limits, keep backups on external sd.
I never compress my backups by the way. No need. But it's not because I don't have room for it to decompress. It's just an extra step that I have no use for.
Hello all! I'm a ROOKIE in the truest since of the word when it comes to: 1) android (having come from the Iphone) and 2) rooting and install custom roms.
Situation: A week ago I rooted and installed Cyanogenmod 10 on my phone (SGH i747). I loved the operation system but my battery life seems to have gone down hill. Too, I've noticed that I have to restart my wifi (release/renew IP) sometimes for whatever reason.
Problem: Given the above situation, I thought I might restore the phone to stock firmware (and am learning that this is not as easy as restoring the Iphone from jailbreak!). I think I've got the instructions down: get odin (windows) and get latest stock.
Where can I find latest stock? I read this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026751&nocache=1) and downloaded it here. But I wanted to double check.
Can anyone help?
Too, any other counsel for using custom roms would be appreciated. (I apologize in advance if I've broken any forum rules with this post. I'm a bit nervous/anxious at this point and want to get this resolved. THANKS IN ADVANCE!)
The thread you linked contains just the recovery, not the entire stock firmware.
You probably want to look here for complete stock firmware packages; you'll most likely need to use Odin to flash them (which you probably did to get your device to that state anyway). Note that that's completely stock; i.e. you'll unroot your phone by using that firmware. (Why, yes, I have made that mistake in the past; why do you ask?)
Alternatively: did you use this method to root the phone? If so, just repeat those steps and you'll be back at your stock (but rooted) firmware.
Edit: I just wanted to comment on your rationale for unrooting - have you tried diagnosing your battery drain issues to any extent? If you're willing to spend some time working on that, you might try running BetterBatteryStats for a while and seeing what's eating your battery life, then working from there.

I followed advice - installed Better...Status. Media Scanner Service really consumes power. I read some threads and someone said something about SD card problems. When I bought my phone, I just stuck a micoSD that I had laying around. I did not format or anything. I had used it in the past to transfer files to and from a Motorola phone I had (files I used for college classes, etc.).
I checked the format of the file and it reads: "Generic Hierarchical" (in the "info" pane). Do I need to format the card? If so, can someone give me some advice as to how to do it so I don't loose info or mess something up. Thanks in advance.

So I get it right: plug phone into pc > open explore pane > copy SD Card to pc > then format (fat32) > then copy contents back onto newly formatted SD Card?
Also, does this sound like it might be causing a problem for me? Thanks!

Just have a quick question. Recently bought a phone on craigslist and even though the guy did a factory reset before giving it to me, it still has some of his files and apparently TB backups on the internal. So, wanting to have a way of tracking this guy down if things go bad, say, I get blacklisted, I'd like to be able to do so. I think I know the answer but want to make sure, a nandroid will save all the information on the internal including TB backups, data files, EVERYTHING, right? As if you were restoring it to the exact state it was in when you made the nandroid, right? If I were to use Rom Manager to make a complete backup, is it going to backup the SD card too? I want to say the last time I made a backup on my old phone, it was HUGE compared to the previous backup. Meaning, almost 3 gigs I think as opposed to maybe an 800 mb one before. Or could that be because the old backup was ICS and JB is just that much bigger.
I think I'm confident in believing that just making a nandroid would be all I need since the SD card is mine and contains none of his information. I want to make sure just in case and thought this would be the best way to figure it out. I would have no idea how to search for a question like this lol. Thanks in advance folks.
Backup your files and then tell us.
I highly doubt that it would work. My reason being is that if I backed up my files on my exterbal sd card and say get another note 2 and restored the same bacjup on there it would just install it correctly. See where im going?
If it were to change the imei number from the other phone then there would be two phones running the same imei number... which is paradoxical. Not possible.
Theres always variable change though. It might work it might not.
I'm a consultant... ask me anything... I'll run away.

A nandroid backup is a exact image of your OS, kernel, and boot image, that doesn't make a backup of your titanium backups because your titanium backups are stored in your internal SD. The best thing to do is make a copy of your internal SD in your computer or just copy your titanium backup folder to your computer.

Hello T Mobile Galaxy S4 users! I've taken this thread idea from Marlybru, one of the most helpful Recognized Contributors on XDA, who got the idea from Undercover, just to give proper credit where it is due.
The HTC Sensation has had an ongoing Noob Help thread for more than a year now and it's been an invaluable resource to people of all skills levels looking for answers to questions that might get flamed if asked anywhere else.
There are a lot of people joining XDA on daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked which fill up Development Threads and the main Q&A Forum. Post those questions here!.
First things first. I strongly advise you to read this thread before posting ANYTHING ANYWHERE on XDA.
Second The SEARCH button is your best friend. It will go to war with you. It will tuck you in at night. It lives to serve you! Use it! Almost any question you can think up has already been answered on XDA. Before posting in threads see if the Search Button will fine the answer for you. If you can't find the answer or if you don't understand the answer, then come here and the community will do all it can to help you figure it out.
Third. Re-read the Second thing. This cannot be stressed enough.
Fourth. Don't just come here to ask questions. Come back to help others! In a fairly short time many of you who come to this thread to ask super noobie questions will start to get pretty proficient at Android modding. Please keep coming back to this thread to help the next wave of rookies that are coming after you. Remember, you needed your hand held once, pay it forward by holding someone else's hand.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE
Odin, ROM's, rooting help etc...... you will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.
Please, be aware of the model of your phone when asking questions.
This thread and this entire forum deals with the T Mobile Variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 model SSGH - M919.
Other Samsung Galaxy S4 Variants
T-MOB SGH-M919

No abuse towards noobs or silly questions is tolerated here!
There is no such thing as a dumb question in this thread. If you need to ask how to take the back cover off your phone or how to wipe cache, feel free to ask it here. All questions are welcome.
If you engage in noob bashing here because someone asked a simple question I will search your post history and find the posts you made when you first signed up here about which button turns your phone on and post them here for everyone to laugh at. (By the way, go take a look at my rookie posts. There are some doozies.)
Everyone was new here once,so Noobs New users, please take the time to familiarize yourselves with how things work in the forum by reading this helpful guide. I linked this above, but it's such a great guide on how to be a great XDA Community Member that it's worth linking it twice.
As development continues and we start seeing patterns of repeat questions I'll link answers to the most common questions here in the first couple posts of the thread. So keep an eye out for those updates over the next several months.
Some of the most common questions....
What is the difference between the S4 Development Forum and the S4 Original Development Forum?
The regular development forum is for ROMs based on Samsung's Touchwiz version of Android
The original development forum is for AOSP or other based non Touchwiz ROMs, recoveries, and such
What is Odin?
Odin is a program that lets you flash things to a Samsung mobile device from a PC. It's an invaluable part of modding Samsung devices.
Here is a guide by k0nana about how to use Odin. You can find download links for the software there as well as a few other things.
If you need a little more detail on how to use Odin this is a more detailed write up by Intratech explaining how to use it. (Note, do not download and try to install anything from this thread. That is a thread with GS3 files. If you try to put those on your GS4 you will not be happy. This thread is for information on Odin ONLY!)
How do I root my Galaxy S4?
CF-Auto Root by Chainfire
What ROMs are there for the T Mobile GS4?
Here's a big list of them with links all organized in one place. Thanks to MT3G.
What recoveries are available for the T Mobile SGS4?
ClockworkMod
TWRP
PhilZTouch
OUDHS
What are all these installed apps on the stock ROM that I don't know anything about?
That could be bloatware. Stuff T Mobile and Samsung put on there for a variety of reasons. See this list by Xologist explaining what all those APK's are.
How come my 16GB phone says I have only 5GB available even though I just flashed a fresh ROM?
First off, you never had 16GB free. That's the total memory on the device. That includes the space for the ROM, recovery, bootloader, system files, data, and then what's left over is your user partition which is abou 11GB for you to put photos and music on.
But if you make a nandroid backup using Clockwork Mod Recovery it saves the backup in a hidden directory that uses up a lot of space. (About 1 GB for an AOSP backup and 2 or 3GB for a TouchWiz backup). You can use the CWM Recovery App to find and upload the backup to your computer over Wifi for safe storage. Or you can just delete he backup if you no longer need it.
I bought a phone off Craigslist and the IMEI is bad!
You learned a valuable lesson. Don't buy phones off Craigslist. And don't try to change your IMEI. It is illegal to do so. And don't ask XDA how to change it because we can't discuss that here.
However, if you haven't bought you used phone yet and you are worried about it having a bad IMEI, have the seller meet you at a T Mobile store and get the sales rep to verify its a clean phone with no outstanding payment due and that the IMEI won't be blocked in the future. Just be sure that YOU pick the store to meet at. Don't let the seller pick the store in case he has a T Mobile rep working with him.

Hello!
I've had this problem for a while, and haven't been able to fix it because of school, but now that I have time, I wanted to fix it
I tried too root my s4, and I got it to work, and everything works fine, except the storage seems to be broken.
It says that there is only 400 MB of available space, but it has a total space of about 10 GB, most of which is still unused, and I can't install anymore apps or stuff, because it complains about not being enough space, even though it has at least 400 MB left
Any help would be appreciated

Have you by chance made more than 1 backup using ClockworkMod?
I don't know that this is your answer issue, but I've seen something very similar on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 series of tablets.
What was happening was that ClockworkMod recovery was backing up everything on internal storage including user data that was on teh SD Card parition of internal storage. So the backups were like 4GB intead of 1GB. This was happening because CWM was originally written for phones that had like 1GB or less of internal storage and it was made to back up everything on internal storage, not just on the system and data paritions.
Then the problem compounded itself on later backups because CWM stores it's backups in the internal memory partition. So for the second backup it would backup the entire contents of the internal memory again so the backup would be another 4GB, and this time it would also include the last backup, which was like 4GB alone. So the total backup size was 8GB instead of the 1GB it was supposed to be.
And the best part was the the backups were being hidden on the internal partition like CWM likes to do now so they were taking up a ton of space but weren't showing up as used space on the internal storage graphs.
That problem got fixed by the ClockworkMod team for the Galaxy Tab 2 series of tablets so I assume they addressed it on the recovery for all devices. But maybe you are still seeing a similar issue on your GS4.
You should be able to check if this is the problem by going to the ClockworkMod app and looking at your backups. Try deleting one of them (copy it to a PC or to the EXT SD Card if you don't want to lose it) and then see if your available internal memory goes way up afterwards.
If the problem isn't CWM (Or if you're not using CWM), I'd bet it's still something similar, where you have very large files that aren't being reported to the graph in settings. Try copying the entire contents of the SD Card to either an external SD card or to a PC just so you dont' lose anything. Then boot to recovery and format the data partition, which is the internal SD card. See if you have 10GB again, and then copy all your files back. (Look at them on the PC first and make sure there isn't a 6GB file in there somewhere)

I had a feeling that some back-ups were taking up the space.
I have OUDHS as my recovery, and I noticed that it was only able to keep track of one, or I was only able to restore from the most recent back up. I guess I should switch to another recovery. I had TWRP on it for a bit, but it was too sensitive, and extremely difficult to scroll down the lists of menus without accidentally opening something. I wonder if that has been fixed in some of the later revisions of it though
There is a ClockworkMod app?
I assume you mean the internal storage is the internal SD card, and not the removable Micro SD card; I didn't know that that part could be reformatted.
Would ticking re-partition on odin do something similar?
Thank you for your help by the way!
Yes there is am clockwork mod app that let's you control and organize the recovery settings and to keep your backups organized. It is available on the play store.
Yes Im talking about the internal storage. Android 4.2 calls that the SD card and the removable storage the EXT SD or SD 1. You have files hiding on the internal storage. I've never used OUDHS so I'm not sure how it stores its backups.
As for formatting the internal storage I wouldn't mess with repartitioning in Odin unless you really know what you are doing. Just boot to recovery and wipe data. Sorry I said something different before...I was thinking about the external SD card for a second. (Back up the data to the external SD card or a PC first, obviously). If you want to be really thorough do a factory reset. You will have to redo all your settings doing that though. But either way should clear the internal SD card.

Hello I was wondering if there was anyway to disable the phone from playing the ring tone and notification tones through the speaker while wearing headphones. Do I need a custom rom for this? Thanks.
Hi, can someone confirm for me that I'm following the correct steps? I haven't found anything clear on exactly how to go about the process of returning my device to 100% stock after searching and viewing many threads. I have the general idea, and just want clarification on one part.
I ODIN flashed the official MDL image.
I rooted my device using CF-auto-root.
I used Triangle Away to change all my bootloader information to official and change my information to official.
I then wiped my data/cache in stock recovery.
I once again ODIN flashed the official MDL image to remove traces of root that were added by CF-auto-root, such as the SuperSU app and binary.
I think it's all back to stock. Everything in download mode shows as official. My system status says official in the about menu within the ROM. The one thing I can't see on this device is the flash counter without rerooting with CF-auto-root again, so I want to confirm that ODIN flashing M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_M919UVUAMDL_HOME.tar.md5 did not increment my flash counter. I wouldn't think it would seeing as it's a official tar, but I figured it'd be best to ask the people who know for certain before taking it in for replacement.

Are you taking it back to t mobile for warranty replacement? If so you should be good. The guy at the t mobile store isn't going to check your flash counter, which should be 0 anyway based on the steps you took. If you boot into download mode you should be able to see if the flash count is zero. I think if its zero it won't show anything. If its more than 0 you will see the flash count.

Are you using the headphones with the mic that let you talk on the phone phone over headphones? Or are you using straight headphones that are for listening to audio only?
I think, but am not sure, that this makes a difference.

I am. It's been heating up so much while it's been charging that it stops charging and pops up a message saying the battery temperature is too high.

Are you sure about this? I don't think I've ever seen a flash count on this phone and have read that it is completely hidden on this phone, and that you never see it. I didn't see anything in download mode before using Triangle Away either, but Triangle Away showed a flash count around 15 before resetting it, so obviously it had been incremented.

I am not 100% sure, no. What I described has been the standard on Samsung devices for a while, but they might have changed it. But if you really want to check you could reroot it and use triangle away to check the flash counter again. If you had set it to 0 it should only be 1 when you get it rooted again. Then you can do the original steps to take it back to 0.

I'm not completely certain of this either. But again I am more than completely certain that t mobile will take the return and will never realize that its been flashed. I am assuming you are taking it to a t mobile store.

I think there's no way to change it. I've tried both. The volumes in the headphones reduces and I hear the ringtone through the earphones and through the phone speaker at the same time. Maybe it's a feature but I don't' like it lol.
Also, I think the sounds sucks on sgs4 compared to sgs3. Anyone experiencing this? It just doesn't sound too clear through headphones and I'm using pretty decent headphones. ath-m50, r7, senn 595
Update: I think the source files I was using was crap oops. I tried a good 320 and now it sounds just about the same lol.
Installing Heimdall on OSX 10.7.5
Greetings, seriously dumb question: I'm trying to install Heimdall on my Mac. In the readme file it says to install simply run "heimdall suite.pkg," but I can't find it anywhere in my download. What am I missing here?
Thanks!!
My city just got LTE yesterday and I seemed to have lost my tethering abilities. I'm on DarthStalker and the unlimited data plan. I was able to tether before with no issues... Does LTE have anything to do with not being able to tether now?

This sounds like a question for t mobile customer service. But...don't talk to the basic call center. Try to get tech support on the line as they will actually know what LTE is.
If LTE is the problem, can you keep the phone connected at non LTE speed and fix it? Or does that still not work?

Sorry I have never used a Mac in my life and have no idea how to help you. You might try asking this in the help thread for the AT&T variant, the i9505. There are more users in that forum and your question is obviously not variant specific.

Can't call tmob support, I have the unlimited data plan and am using the tethering hack built into DarthStalker's rom.
Yes, if I switch it to hspa+ 4G then I can tether. But I was hoping to take advantage of the LTE speeds.
