Allshare just works on the local network. Allshare Play registers you through the internet and connects with all devices registered always which I assume means always connected because the services are running always.
I prefer simply allshare as it keeps access to my device local to just my home network. Using allshare play gives a third party "Samsung" complete access to my device or registered devices anytime which I'm not really cool with. Just 2 cents from a member of the 1st tinfoil brigade =)
Edit: Oops I didn't answer your question. So to get Allshare Play devices to all see each other you actually have to register them using the Samsung Allshare website. Login to your account, ect ect... there's a demo to show you what to do on it.
it looks like DLNA/Allshare is integrated with the phone. To access other devices media, open either Gallery or VideoPlayer and access nearby devices. Other DLNA devices should show up.
I have a Tab 8.9 and S3.
On the Tab, in AllShare, under settings you should see the device name for the Tab as a media server. You can select which content you share. In the main window you should see a list of local devices, including My Device and, presumably your S3.
On your S3, in AllShare Play, use the menu button and select nearby devices. Your Tab should show up in the list.
Regards,
Ian
This is a tutorial to connect direct streaming from the SGS3 to the PS3.
Note: I used Xillisoft to change the video format to MP4 standard (works better) Transfer to the phone (Do not convert, copy as is.)
First go to settings and set it up like this:
** For first time media server set up, PS3 Settings **
IN Settings/Network Settings
go through using
1. Settings method: custom
2. Connection method: wired connection
3. Operation mode: auto detect
4. IP address: automatic
5. DHCP: do not set
6. DNS: automatic
7. MTU: automatic
8. Proxy server: do not use
9. "UPNP: enable"
Then press X to save settings.

EDIT: WIFI must be enabled, The network relies on this.
Path on device: (Settings/More Settings/ Nearby Devices)
------BEFORE YOU CHECK (File Sharing)-------
1.Shared Contents:/ check all
2.Device Name: (mine is SGH-T999/Orical)
3.Access Control: (Only Allowed Devices)
4.Allowed Device List: UPnP/1.0 (This is the GS3) and Windows-Media-Player ( if your connected to your computer as well)
5.Not Allowed Device List: (none)
6.Download to: (USB storage)
7.Upload to other devices: (Always Ask) *Important*
---Now to the PS3---
Go into settings and enable media server (Also See Below) then sync the device to the PS3 by checking Nearby Devices.
Depending on the amount of media you have on the Phone this can take a minute or two before it finishes.
Once it's connected you'll see the "SGH-T999/Your Name Here" within the columns labled Video, Pictures, Music.
If your looking for a video under the pictures column on the PS3 it's not going to display it and will tell you their not
there so make sure your under the correct column on the PS3 for what ever your going to stream.
Not sure if this is going to matter to some but my set up is ethernet between the router and the PS3 (Not wireless), the
connection works better and transfers information quicker if your directly connected. I have all of the parental set to off.

It's not an App this is actually built into the system so it should work no matter what, this allows you to direct transfer or stream information to another device, the PS3 see's it as a media server device because of the way the system is set up.
I would check to see if you can connect or even get to turn on wifi direct, maybe you removed a system file or something that you shouldn't have. You have to have WIFI enabled because this works through your router.
Is this better than using a upnp app like Twonky server that transcodes media on the fly? I don't do any streaming really to my PS3, but just wondering in case I ever do...

If it works for you that way sure but the purpose if that app is for people who dont have devices that can do what ours does normally. I saw a few people post that they had a hard time setting it up so I figured I would post it, the GS3 does an amazing job on its own and the clarity is all in what you use to convert the movies with.

I tried this out, and it's not working for me at all. Anything you might have left out?
EDIT: I believe that I found out why I can't get this to work. My network connection says "uPnP NOT ENABLED" After reading online a little, I guess that my ISP has my router locked down (it's their company provided one). So people, check this setting when you run "TEST CONNECTION" on your PS3. if it's not enabled, you will have to do it manually (if you can log into your router).

I edited the OP for those whom have never set up the network on their PS3's before with UPNP enabled, I just assumed that everyone set it up prior to this, my bad. (Thanks for pointing it out)
Side note I have it listed as wired connection, it doesn't have to be exactly the way I did for this setting, if your using wireless then choose wireless.

How did you get the usb mass storage mode working...? I tried on the PS3 and Vizio TV. On PS3 it just said "Unknown USB Device connected" One of the reasons I LOVE my HD2... real USB drive mode.. =D
Also thanks OP.. I forgot I had dlna mode on the S3 heh.. That would be one solution indeed.

The device is designed to work as if it is a media center itself so you have to think about connections used with that method, I had a tough time at first because all the devices I had were HTC variants in the past. Let the device work the way its meant to and it will get easier as you figure it out.

Sounds like you might have removed sharecast or another media app by Samsung, that's the only reason that would happen.

Nothing we didn't know but. I was so dissapointed I wrote samsung to tell them UNACCEPTABLE. As I'm sure you know . Samsungs mtp mass storage doesn't interface with linux. "Dear Joseph,
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that you can't connect your Samsung phone in a computer running with Linux Operating System. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused you.
Samsung doesn't have a configurable option to connect a Samsung Device to a Linux computer. The process for the mass storage settings is tested to work only with Microsoft Windows and Macintosh computer. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may present.
We are unable to speculate when/if a software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.
Thank you again for your comments, understanding and patience.

Sorry, I can't even find it on the play store. I just restored it from a TB I had on my GNEX.
Try searching XDA for an official apk of swiFTP or try another ftp app on the play store. I saw a couple highly rated ones that are free.

DoubleTwist?
I thought that DoubleTwist is only for receiving music from iTunes; not for sending music and video and such to remote devices. Or can that be done?
I'm also looking for something like this. I'd like to be able to send what I see on the display of my Android device or Linux notebook to my TV. In Apple land, that would be done with AirPlay -> http://www.apple.com/airplay/; "Mirroring" is what I'm after. I'm not looking for something which would allow me to send just a video or music file to my TV - DLNA works.
Can someone suggest a solution? Those AirPlay apps that I found in the Play Store only seem to be able to send music, .or at best also video files. Oh, and I'm also looking for an AirPlay "receiver" for Android, that I could put on some Android USB stick or such which I'd connect to my TV via HDMI.
Oh #2 - it doesn't HAVE to be AirPlay. Something else altogether would be fine as well, as long as it does what I "need".
Thanks,
Alexander

Well then we can close this thread now because AirPlay mirroring isn't going to happen from your Android device. Hell the native Android solution to mirroring (Miracast) isn't even going to happen. That was just Googles way of saying "Look we had a half ass thought about it, now leave us the hell alone. No you cant have mirroring. Sincerly, Google."
You say you are familiar with DLNA and it works well for you, the end.
I like the remote app, but I can't figure out how to use the guide on my directv menu. The blue button does a mini menu, but nothing else seems to pull it up. My dad's samsung s4 has an actual button that says "guide" on it and it works fine....WTH LG?...this is basic functionality stuff here. That just seems retarded that they wouldn't have included a way to view the channel guide. Am I just missing something?
I did find a directv app, that looks like it might work....but that amounts to having several remotes in the livingroom....irritating. ....just tried it and it does work, but it only controls the directv box...no volume...no input selector....no dvd.
Anyone have a solution or a better app that will work on all my devices? DVD, Directv box and Samsung TV?
I had the Samsung version of the TouchSquid app on my S4 and it was very feature rich, although kind of expensive! I'm not sure if the "guide" will work, but it has a 30 day money back guarantee.
