Make your Otterbox Commuter silicone firm and new again - HTC One X

So I got bored the other nite and remembered a idea about shrinking silicone cases to make them fit better.
I gave it a try with a old otterbox commuter and got some amazing results.
All I did was
1. Throw the silicone in boiling water fully submerged for around 4 minutes but I think I should of done 3 minutes but I got lucky with 4.
2. Remove it and let it cool for a few minutes.
3. Dry it then wrap it around the OneX.
So after the boiling process the corners were amazingly snug and better than when it was new.
But here came the surprise, i removed the silicone and started rubbing the corners for grazes that have been there for a while, the silicone was wearing off. I rubbed all four corners down and eventually the residue stopped, it was like rubbing dead skin off. So guess what, brand new layer of silicone!
After that I washed the silicone in tap water and let it sit overnite. Used it the next day and it has been lookin new since.
The external caseing still fits great but a little teasing the first time to get it to form. I teased it right after I put the silicone on the OneX after the boiling process.
TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Who is running nekkid???

I just pulled off my clearfreak cause I messed up the install and I have 2 more coming from the ebay sale, but I've noticed that even the clearfreak takes a bit away from the "nakedness" . I mean damn this screen is sexy and responsive.
Just wondering if anyone is using their phone on a daily basis without a screen protector, gel skin, or neither. How do you like it? How is it holding up?
**Might give away those two Clearfreak SP** haven't decided yet, but let me know.
I bought mine on release day when the store opened and mine is naked as a jay-bird. My concern is being stupid and throwing it in my pocket with keys or something like that so I ordered the RealClear (or something like that) screen protector. I also think its a little hard to one-hand-hold because its fairly slick so I am going to look for a gel/rubber case soon.
I've been using my Vibrant for 2 weeks now without any sort of protection on it and I have to say that the phone is very durable. I dropped it a couple of times and returned with no scratches. I'm soon to get one of those Mesh cases though, just for the appeal .
Had a Realook but it made the capacitative buttons along the bottom less sensitive. I took it off and am debating on going back to a screen protector. If my screen gets scratched up that bad I will just call Tmobile customer service and tell them I need a new phone because my phone is sucking down batteries in less than 2 hours. Works every time!!!!
I was running naked for a while but then I got one of the gel skins form TMO. Been using it on and off. I love the phone naked but I feel like im living on the edge without a case to protect it.
I tried a wet install one from ebay but it had bubbles and felt tacky...I have a amzer I went to put on twice but cannot get every tiny strand from microfiber off screen...Iget stuck with a few stubborn ones...So I been naked for a few weeks now and 0 scratches but i'm very anal and wash my hands dozens of times and handle it like it's an infant.

Dropped my first phone less than three feet on to a tile floor, on the third day I owned it. Screen looked fine (no cracks) but wouldn't work. Got a replacement, and still running naked. I just can't bring myself to cover this sexy bastard up.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah im loving the nekkid feeling. Im sure I'll decide when I get the other 2 sp's in. Definitely not gonna get rid of the gel skin. Not that its a bad thing, but it does make the phone twice as heavy and twice as thick. I'd just like to think that if I dropped the phone it would give some cushion to avoid a corner drop/crack screen.
I guess it comes down to:
Sexy ass phone thats, super light and has an extremely bright screen VS. protected investment... LOL
Had mine for a few weeks, i started out with the t-mobile gel skin and screen protector but instantly realized after putting it on that it was horrible and blurred the image and ruined the colors of the screen. I do like the gel skin though. It gives the phone slightly more thickness and heft, which i prefer, and i think it makes it more comfortable to use.
for the screen I started using just regular kitchen plastic wrap as a temporary measure, but i actually like it quite a bit. it is super thin and clear so the screen looks just as good as usual and is quite resistant to smearing from your fingers. You can drag your finger across the screen and hardly see anything at all. It also wraps around the sides of the phone and keeps little bits of crude from getting in between the chrome-ish bezel and screen. the biggest problem with it is that it just isn't very strong, which leads to replacing it every 2-3 days because of all the little nicks and scratches it picks up. you also need the gel skin in order to hold it on and and keep it from moving.
Android Streaking (Naked)
I ran my G1 Naked for the last year and a half using the "sleeve" that it came with without any issues, scratches, etc so I figured I'd do the same with the Vibrant.
I found a nice semi thick cloth sleeve case with a drawstring so it doesn't fall out when dropped and as a bonus it helps keep the screen clean of fingerprints, debris etc. I have dropped it onto tile from waist height 10 or so times and the case dampens the falls enough so far. I just hope I don't slip when it's not in the sleeve.
Streaking here since i bought it on friday it was released.
I've never had a condom for any of my phones. it's like covering up your Ferrari with a car bra. What's the point?
As we say in the car world, "She ain't a trailer queen, she's built for driving. Drive her."
Exactly!
I was running nekkiddd for a week.
Just bought the clearfreak and after 3 days with it I hate it!
Returning my phone to her original self.
This phone is staying as nude as a newborn.
Only device I have ever put in a case is my iPod touch, as that damn polished metal back scratches so easy and can drastically diminish resale value.
did anybody try the Carbon Fiber Protector Shield Full Body Skin on amazon
Mine has been case and screen protector free for a week now. I've also drunkenly dropped it on 3 or 4 occasions from ear / pocket height. There is no sign of drop not even a scratch. I've noticed the chrome ring around the screen is very durable (i think it might be metal?). And the phone is so light drops don't seem to effect is as much as big metal devices. The screen seems very tough and thick (much thicker than a nexus one screen).
So far im pretty impressed with the build quality considering the "cheap feel" in the hand. I guess we need to stop associating heft with quality.
My only real concern is breaking the volume rocker or power button. They seem extra cheaply made.
Realook. You cannot see its there. And I don't have any problems with the capacitives. Screen is as Vibrant as without it. It truly is invisible and un-feel-able.
right now I'm running nekkid. I wouldn't mind getting some type of case for it though, just in case of the accidental drop, or if my daughter throws it across the room like she did my MT3G (only received 1 small dent on the T-Mobile logo =) )
As for a screen protector, I would like to get one, just have been seeing mixed reviews on them.
i've had mine since launch and its still naked because the god damn USPS sucks a fat nut and wont just drop my THREE DOLLAR EBAY GELLI CASE off in the freaking mailbox because for some reason it ended up getting "signature required"
i pulled the lanyard off an old camera to be safe, i'm so paranoid im going to drop it.

it is soft plastic, no idea how you havent scratched yours. i have been extremely careful with my phone and noticed a small divot in the edge, i havent dropped it or put it anywhere that it could get scratched, no idea where it came from.
Happy to see most are not throwing money away on screen condoms, I have been naked since day one, screen is as new as when i first unboxed, This screen will not scratch PERIOD. For those you think that there is no differance between naked and using clear or ghost condoms, Just stop it, there is a differance, No matter how clear or ghost they claim your still putting a layer of material on the screen and it will effect the clearity, This screen is gorgeous and ment to be naked. BTW I have a TMO gel case incase i drop the phone and they are perfect together, Gives the phone that umph it was missing.

Soft rubberized feel back snap on case

I picked up some black Plasti Dip from Lowes. I sprayed it on to my spare purple back cover that came with the phone. It came out awesome. They have other colors also.

I've been thinking about trying this since no 3rd party seems to want to supply any decent accessories for this phone.
How much did it cost? Pics?
Thanks for the tip.
Its been done already. Search for post
The spray is under 10 bucks. I also sprayed a usb flash drive

Looks sweet. Any prep work involved? Or did u just sprayed it on as is??
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I didn't sand it down or anything put you should apply 2-3 coats
I found a can of black (I wish they would have had other colors) at Lowes for $7. 4 coats later, it looks awesome! I love the feel and that it no longer slips out of my hand. No more fatty silicone cases for me. My work colleagues were amazed at how nice this looked and felt.
This was a great tip. Thanks to OP.
dam that looks legit, gonna have to try that!
That looks sweet...
I would like to know how this held up over time..
I am SO glad you posted this! I have been looking at an extended battery on Ebay with a black GLOSSY battery door (BLEH - fingerprint magnet!), but having seen this I'm going to get a can of this stuff and paint the back of that battery door - should be great!

Unfortunately, no too well so far. It has started to peel back on one side from rubbing when it goes in/out of my pocket. I imagine it's because the original surface is so slick/smooth. I think if it gets bad, I'll try again but spray on some kind of primer or maybe just spray paint first so it has something to hang onto. Anyone have any thoughts/ideas? OP, how is yours holding up?
went to Menards and they didn't carry plasti-dip, so I used this Rustoleum Truck Bed Coating instead... gave the backplate a hard, scratchy black surface. It's kind of awesome. Suddenly my Vibrant felt like a rugged industrial device than a shiny, whimpy product-photo-ready gadget. I cracked up at the difference when I first held it in my hand.
process:
sanded down backplate with sandpaper --> applied and dried two coats --> truckbed.jpg (attached)
superglued dorky metal sticker (it wouldn't take to the rough surface otherwise) --> cleaned up superglue around edges --> applied liquid mask over sticker --> applied coat (and repeated last two steps again) --> texturedetail.jpg (attached)
caldjeff: you need to sand the backplate first w/ sandpaper in order to roughen it up, so that whatever you apply to it has something to grip. This is a general suggestion... I don't know about plasti-dip in particular.

Beware: Body Glove ATT Case

I've had my captivate for 1 week and the top glossy part is covered in scratches and small spots. Guess what, it was in the Body Glove case the whole time! Dust and stuff gets trapped underneath the stupid rubber case and then is contained underneath and will happilly move around and scratch the hell out of your beloved device.
Now i'm just going naked with no case and the top of my machine is scratched. I'm pretty upset because this was an ATT case and it was expensive.
Whatever. goes to show there's no perfect case and the best is to go naked OR go with a slip case. But I just wanted to warn the rest of you the body glove case is not that great.
I can attest to your claim, as I also had the AT&T Body Glove case and noticed scratches all along the top rim of the phone. Kinda saddening, but oh well.
Let us weep together brother!
wow thanks for the heads up
I figured that was relatively all cases that formed a tight seal with the phone. I know my Amzer case is the same, as was the case I had for my iPhone. I just make sure I have a screen protector over the screen so that it "scratches" the protector intead of the screen.
Hmm, I've had mine since mid-August, and not nary a mark anywhere on my cappy.
I recently switched from the Body Glove to a TPU case and noticed scratches at the top of my phone too!!! Bummer

I have had my case for 2 monts and no scratches.
i keep my phone in my pocket and work in a dusty enviromenty.
p.s. I have the body glove case
This is why I put a skin on any of my phones before putting it in a case.
I ordered one of those "free" stealth guard skins, despite their reviews, because its cheap and it covers the phone. I'm not gonna put it on 'til Otterbox comes out with their cases, and when I get mine, i'll throw the skin on and then put it in the case. Not concerned with the quality of them (stealth guard) too much especially if its just going to be inside another case. It's more there for the extra protection factor...
I currently don't have anything on the phone at all right now, and have been lucky that there's no scratches or marks *yet* on it...hopefully Obox will get their act together and get the cases out soon, 'cause I can't wait!

The AT&T rep at the store I went to said the cases had a 30 day return policy. I liked my body glove - so I didn't return it.

I bought mine and had it shipped to the UK so not an option.
I had a completely differenet issue with the Body Glove case. When I had it on my captivate it would interfere with my touch inputs. This would only start after having the case on the phone for a few days and then all of a sudden I couldn't type anything and my touch inputs were completely off. As soon as I took the case off it worked like normal again, put the case back on and it still worked normal for a few days again. I just stopped using the case and am waiting for my Zagg total protection
I've got the Ghost Armor skin and it's pretty decent however the corners are peeling away, I've just been lazy and don't want to go back to the mall store to get new corner pieces put on.
Add to that the Verizon Droid X leather case and it's not too bad overall. You can even put the phone back into the droid X case with headphones plugged in.
I've had my Captivate and the Body Glove case from the AT&T store for the last 2-3 days now, no scratches, everything fits perfectly, and no issues at all. I love this case..
oh wow...
i just took off my body glove and the top and bottom of hte phone are scratched up pretty badly
Every few days I take the case off, clean the interior with screen cleaner spray and a lint free cloth. Then I clean the Captivate with a fresh cloth and put it back in the case.
So far no scratches at all.
I don't think this is a case you can just put on and forget about. It fits too tight and sooner or later dirt and grit will get inside and wear away at the phones finish, especially if you put the phone directly in your pocket.
Just clean the interior of the case every few days however and the case works fine.
Ive had the bodyglove case on for well over a month with no issues. I wonder if they recently changed the design or materials they use to manufacture it.
I have no scratches or input issues.

I have scratches on mine too, oh well, it covers it up so I don't really care.
I've had mine on over a month and mine is great w/o any scratches. I've had to take it off a couple times to flash sre. Only problem is that it's a little looser than it was before. Just ordered more tpu cases on ebay.
Mine is too the body glove sucks.

Otterbox cases durability

Can anyone who had the commuter or defender for.a long time tell me how the case holds up. Is it well made. Does the silicone wear out.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I have had a defender for every phone I've had...they rock..i work with cutting steal and heavy machines...I've dropped them truely the best protection for a phone..and when it needs cleaning I throw it in the dishwasher..really it works..
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I have a commuter it's a good product... the silicone at the bottom got a lil stretched out from going in and out of my pocket... the part on the front of the phone...it's a super thin strip at the bottom of the screen, not the flap that covers the usb and hdmi
dropped my phone 3 times twice on hard wood and once on concrete the case still looks brand new and my phone took no damage

How To Guide How to keep your case on the front of the phone

Alright, after months of trying to nail this problem down I finally have a good solution!
I've tried a few different cases on my fold3 and none of them really held well on the top screen when folded and in my pocket. It would start sliding off. So I finally have a solution. Get yourself some good double sided tape (I suggest some type of 3m tape This for example) and measure you a piece of tape that is length of the case that touches the phone that isn't on the screen. Then take a sharp knife and cut a very thin strip of tape. Put that strip on your case and then put the case on the phone. Press hard and hold it there for a bit and then BAM it's not going anywhere again. If it's done right it will not be noticable (see pics I've attached) unless you look closely it's really clean and nice looking to me.
In the pictures you can see the black strip of tape that came with the case that wasn't super useful but what useful was my piece of tape.
I have been lucky in that my cases have not had this issue, but I agree, if you need too, there is no shame in using tape to keep this thing protected.
Just use good quality stuff.
This is the stuff I have and I LOVE IT... https://smile.amazon.com/25Meter-Double-Adhesive-Display-Housing/dp/B071D5CKCX
Good solution, just easy.
Unfortunetly fold series and other folded devices need specially cover.
I have fold 2 1,5 year and few covers:
Ringke slim. Good cover but even pieces of double tape after take off i saw particles of dust and sand.
Next i bought Spigen armor pro. Great protection but a lot of bulky and even mount with force for good fit after few weeks and take off i saw few white dots on the frame from probably few particles sand.
It was little frustrating because I always to take care my devices and carry without any other stuff in my pocket.
4 days ago i told "stop" covers with use tape for hold on the device.
Without case fold is really beautifull and touch metal in every time is really pleasant .
I read topics on reddit about "caseless fold devices" and a lot of people have enjoy use folds without case.
After that I use my device only with original leather back cover, without front cover.
Admittedly 2 days ago drop my fold from pocket on the floor. It drop edge front frame but after that is only scratch and rest device survive well
I have béen using a dab of clear silicone sealant. Holds well, and comes off by rubbing it with a cloth.
After a few months of searching, I just gave up and use whichever is the slimmest case without an adhesive. It made more than a few scratches on the side of my screen and I just decided not to give a crap about it, it doesn't go over the main screen anyway.
