I've used to run Jelly Bean on Desire until I installed Nikez's ICS 4.0.4 to check how games run there, and they ran much much faster, no lag at all. Still, JB is smoother in every other aspect besides gaming.
But ofcourse, no ROM has same speed and I was wondering are there any good/known tweaks to improve performance in games for JB 4.2.2?
Nikez's JB is faster than other JBs I tried but I still need little performance boost to make them run fast like on 4.0.4....
This is an interesting discussion.
I was on froyo before and jumped to JB 4.2.2 directly.
I can't compare some games because the newest ones work only on 4.x and did not work on 2.2... but the games working in froyo are working smooth on JB.
I'm using CyanoMod007 v21.
I think I could try the Nikez ICS you mentioned.
I am using it. It is faster than other Jb roms but not as ics.
JB is a resource hog compared to ICS and you can't get the same GPU perf on JB. It's a fact and you can't really change it unless we somehow become able to change the GPU clock on Adreno 200. I had the same experience on my Defy; CM9 is much faster for gaming than CM10.
Don't be disappointed, Adreno 200 is crap anyways and Qualcomm made a wrong decision in using the AMD Z430 in their debut GPU

I agree with you. But still, CM9 has laggy animations and feels slower then CM10. Gaming is it's only advantage IMO...
I used to play this mobile version of BFBC2 on my Defy all day and although it wasn't the best game I could easily get playable FPS on any CM9 or CM9-based MIUI ROM. The move to CM10 made my frame rates drop to the boundaries of unplayability. I can't even play it on my Desire, QSD8250 is so bad.
I think the system is just so focused on hitting 60 fps on JB ROMs because of Project Butter, that the GPU really has to push hard so there aren't resources left for gaming especially on a device with 512MB LPDDR1.
It's really a tradeoff; either you can have smoother animations on other apps because of Project Butter in CM10, or you can have better gaming performance with CM9.
The system isn't trying to hit 60fps since the desire doesn't have project butter
Benchmarks
Here are some benchmarks of Quadrand Standard on 2 rooms that i tryed on both roms

like title says, does anyone have multiple pics of quadrant scores from roms, custom and stock with custom kernel??
I want to know wich ones are fast, stable, and able for dayly use without minor bugs
Bro the quadrant score doesn't help you. I have 2600 with 940 MHz but games were laggy (CM7.2), that's why i came back to stock.
I believe this benchmarks are just bulls**ts.
Now im on stock 2.3.3 (which came with the phone first time, original one for my country) and lol, it's fast, smooth and better than other stock roms/custom roms.
As LegoGabi said. A higher quadrant score doesn't mean better performance in games.
I've tried these:
CM 7.1
CM 7.2
CM 9
in which CM 7.2 (with the latest patch) is the most stable.
Great rom for daily use.
I think it's CM7.2
im using CM7.2 and score is 2000++ in quadrant advance
i think the CM7.2 with patch4 is the more fast and stable for dialy use
With Cyanogen mod 4 noobs I got about 2k without overclock And it was like 2.5k with overclok to 900+
For me, it's CM 7.2 with 2000+ pts, as well. Although, you cannot use the "performance" governor all the time.
Hello,
I have ARHD 9.7.2 with Faux123 011vf Kernel and with Renovate gaming boost I can play Need for Speed Most Wanted without issues, as well as other demanding games such as Modern Combat 3 and 4.
I had a quick spin in the ARHD 17.1 ROM (JB) and since it has the stock kernel, I installed Renovate gaming boost as well, but the performance was disappointing. It lags quite a bit more and it renders Most Wanted unplayable.
Also a quick bench on Antutu:
ICS: 14700
JB: 13000
So, the question is, am I missing something, or Jelly Bean is not good for gaming, compared to what we can achieve in ICS, with more custom tweaking?
Are there some Kernels for JB which can perform as well as faux's for good gaming performance, including GPU Overclock from 416MHz to 5120MHz?
1700 is the difference
Stock kernel
Stock based rom
And you wonder if you are missing something
Yes you are that is a small difference and ics has been tweaked for a long time for an initial rom version and stock kernel that's awesome by the time development on new kernel and new roms hits the same level it will far surpass your current high score and by then you will be making the same comparison with 4.2.5

I must say that i've played Vice City before updating to JB and it was running maxed out without major drops. On JB it has framerate issues all the time ;x. Most Wanted is running very good like on ICS.

jb is better than ics
Best performance for games and Overheating whith jb
Gesendet von meinem HTC One X mit Tapatalk 2
yes performance on JB has taken a hit . It was wayyyyy smoother on ICS . In Vice City i could play max settings , flawlessly with ICS . On JB it lags like hell and i even had to lower the settings a lot. It was updated yesterday however and performance is now a lot better , although still not as good as on ICS but we are getting there! .
Im sure JB performance will screen when developers update their apps or in the next version of JB from HTC .
Me too.
Before I use ARHD 9.7 play Wild blood and Need for speed most wanted smooth and clear but now I use ARHD 17.1 is slowing down but I think it's problem with mod of 17.1 not Jelly bean . Only think.
hi..
I make this thread because I get sick of my HOX..
As you know, it's Tegra 3 GPU in this phone and I expected much more.
First, many games are laggy, who even built for this phone / Tegra 3
Mine is rooted and uses the IceColdJelly with NCX kernel.
A game that I like very much is SG: Dead Zone that is build for Tegra GPU. But why the hell does it lagg? It should be the other way around.
Is anyone having problems with this game?
It does not matter what I use for graphics settings, Low,medium, high or ultra high
The game works much better on my Galaxy Nexus, but would far rather use my HOX!
Is there anyone who can give me a tip on what kernel / rom / sense rom that is good for gaming?
It would be wonderful and grateful
Hi.. im looking at a kernel from NCX what called NCX gaming kernel at NCX
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33805830&postcount=10399
or EternityProject Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33672330&postcount=10158
Does this need a sense rom? or does it work with CM10 / AOKP rom? If it need a sense rom ? Which rom? i dont understand how to install it ? is there any one who has done this before and maybe give me a little guide how to install ?
It would be sweet. Thx, maybe this is a solution for laggy games?
Turning back from JB to ICS was the best thing i ever done.. running viper with NCX gaming kernel and Gaming booster and it really runs great. But dont know anything battery life yett..
Case close.
Hey guys,
Just wondering, why do ALL 4.1 and 4.0 Evervolv-based ROMs have massive problems in 3D performance? Scrolling is often not an issue, but window animations and transition animations are horribly laggy. It's reminiscent of the Froyo/GB Sense window animations (the ones that zoom in/out but don't quite finish), except much worse.
Can someone tell me why this is happening? VJ's AOKP 4.2 also suffers, while his CM10.1 4.2 does not. Cyanogenmod007 (4.1.2) suffers but Cyanomod007 (4.2) does not.
What you've got to realise that on HTC Desire, the board carries an Adreno 200 GPU with a stupid 1GHz single core Scorpion CPU, that isn't even close to the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 or any other devices released with ICS and JB. We are using a 3 year old phone, that was nearing its end, but thanks to VJ, Nikez, CM10 and Evervolv team that we are able to enjoy the ICS and JB flavors on Desire. Those guys are already working hard to make the best possible use of resources on our Desire. Those ROMs are not, I repeat: ARE NOT, for daily use. Its just when you want to have a change of flavor on your weekend. The best and stablest are CM7.2 builds. All the ICS and JB are awesome, but they won't satisfy you. I often suffer from the change of flavors in a week and that's what those guys are devloping for. If you have a good phone, with HTC Desire as a backup one, then you can use those flavors.
Launcher can be an issue. Try Nova or Apex. Did speed up for me considerably.

Ok, generally speaking, AospX is WAY faster than any JB 4.1-4.2.2 AOSP/AOKP ROM I have ever tried.
Any reasonal explanation for this?
Because with every successive iteration of Android, it gets farther away from the software for which the hardware was optimized.
That's obvious, but JB is still supposed to be faster (or at least on pair) with it's project butter and gpu optimizations present..
btw Nexus S is officially running on 4.2 so it's not like jellybean wasn't intended to run on such HW.

My guess is, JB utilizes hardware resources more efficiently. If the hardware capability just isn't there, there is nothing to optimize. Also, with every iteration, reverse-engineering closed-source drivers and making them compatible gets tougher as Android moves farther away from stock.
And comparing a Nexus, which is designed to be upgraded with AOSP for its lifetime, to an HTC, which is designed to be upgraded with Sense once (maybe twice), isn't really fair.
Ultimately, who cares. The faster the better. I've just tried Nikills after using Sabsa Prime - all I can say is wow. It's like using a new phone with modern h/w.
As above, JB isn't exactly designed to run on our hardware. Heck ICS wasn't either.. Its all about the complexity of the OS. You won't run Windows 8 smoothly on a PC that can, just about, handle Windows 7)

I have only run one custom ROM so far. I went from stock 2.3.5 sense 3 which I used for a week or so..... I was impressed enough with the stock performance that the first day I decided this would be my first android phone to leave stock for any amount of time. Battery issues caused me to root and install cm10.1 m3. Turns out the battery is shot anyways nothing to do with either ROM. Cm10.1 runs on average just as fast as stock GB did and it has been just as stable.
So in this case I think stock GB ROM has enough stuff that no performance drop is felt going to cm10.
If I went cm7 I'm sure it would be a lot faster but it's fast enough as it is so I won't give up this ROM for a bit more speed.
Scrolling seems to be 100% smooth 99% of the time, the only lag is like a couple seconds to open an app especially when I have several running.
My nexus one which I loved was not even close to this perfect on any jb ROMs I tried on it. I went back to cm7. The desire HD is way faster.
I haven't tried any other ROMs on this phone and in trying to get rid of my flashing obsession. I probably won't try any more for a while. I hope.

Just my 16 year of expert opinion, generally ICS is faster in terms of performance, but JB is much smoother.. going from CodeFireX to Nik's Rebirth ROm, its still pretty smooth, but not as slick as project butter. Still, a great ROM..

mustavalkosta's cm 10.1 nightlie builds are MUCH faster on my dhd than the stock GB rom.
Android jb faster. Fact is that it need some time for the developers to make it stable port to jb. They have make kernel according to it port each and every file according to desire hd. And no one can deny that still after more than a year no ics is complete stable as stock gb Rom.

Your statement is right, from my experience JB is smoother, but ICS is faster (faster opening apps).
But comparison to Nik's ROM is simply not fair as it's a Sense4 ROM which is obviously slower / more stuttering than any other ICS AOSP.
That makes sense to me. I think iv can deal with the extra tiny bit of time opening apps cause I like how smooth the scrolling is.
