the mother of all n00b threads - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Ok lets say I know a noob that has a Samsung T-Mobile SGH-T999
He's been rooting and flashing around.
Getting lots of errors such as "unfortunately, the process xxxx has stopped" and nothing works right.
The noob has Odin. The noob knows how to flash with Odin.
What is the easiest way to get back to stock 4.1.1?
I whoops the noob already tried "downloading and install stock rom via odin" from the 7.0 toolkit.
He also tried the devoloper section and flashed
UVDLJA
PDA: T999UVDLJA
CSC: T999TMBDLJA
Version: 4.1.1 JB
Date: Nov. 14, 2012

Factory reset through recovery.

This guide will get your phone back up and running properly
Forget about the rootbox or any other method this will work for sure as long as you follow instructions exactly.
Easy and sure way fix your problem - Here is s step by step guide:
Download the newest pre-rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 Jellybean v4.1.2 rom: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=22946563261203914
After downloading make a folder on your computer's desktop and unzip the
file using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file
Here is the link for Odin: http://d-h.st/Q14
Download ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app)
Download the Odin Flash firmware for T999 Tmobile then copy it to the same folder as Odin
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the Firmware you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache!
(It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!

Here is a video to start you off with, of course you don't have the jig so you'll have to put it in Download Mode manually.

Here the second post by bubby tells you how to flash via Odin. You'll have to Download Odin, Samsung drivers, etc.

Now this is the lastest release with
Wi-Fi calling. This is the one to flash via Odin to get latest update.
Let me know if you still can't do it, but do your research before trying it because you can brick your phone otherwise.
It's easier than you think.

You are right in unzipping it. PDA that .tar.md5 file and "start".

Just upgraded 2 of them, both worked out great!
Question: After I flashed this, Titanium Backup is telling me it's no longer able to connect to root, or something to that effect. After applying this update, do I have to then re-flash recovery using Odin?
you have to reroot again you lose root after upgrade . flash CWM and flash superuser u good to go

You need to be very specific about the problem you are experiencing.
Exactly what model is your phone, Tmobile T999 or AT&T I747 ?
Also do you want to flash the stock rom for your phone or do you
want to flash the stock-rooted rom?
The Verizon rom did not just happen to appear in your phone, you or someone
else must have flashed it for reasons which are beyond my comprehension.
Good luck!

If you want a stock rom click here: UVDLJA this is the un-rooted T999 Galaxy S3 4.1.1 Jellybean firmware.
This is the same rom which came with your T999 Galaxy S3 it needs to be flashed using ODIN.
You need to unzip the file in order to get the TAR file inside before flashing.
After flashing it might take up to 5-10 minutes to fully boot.
Good luck!

No, if you odin flash any rom it will over write the modem.
If your phone is a T999 (not t999v) then do this and the phone will work properly:
This will over write your modem with the proper one for a T999 phone and this will
flash the stock rooted T999 4.1.2 Jellybean rom.
Follow the instructions below.
Here is the step by step guide:
After you have followed these instructions your phone will have the new T999 4.1.2 jellybean pre-rooted firmware.
Download the stock-rooted Odin flash T999_UVDMD5 Samsung Galaxy S3 Jellybean v4.1.2 firmware.
But the Chinese models usually come with write protection

There might be something wrong with the file. The bootloader is not accepting it due to failed authentication. Be aware that when updating, you won't see the baseband version as UVUEMK2. You'll just see the old MDL one. This is because you can only update to one of the modem files without any issues.
I have absolutely the same problem - Nothing helps - I have followed the link that was pasted in the second comment and it simply does not work. Once it fails on my phone I have to try to flash stock 4.2.2 to unbrick my device. I am following all of the posts hopefully some new way to update the modems comes out so that I do not have to lock my bootloader down.
Are you trying to just flash the bin file not tarred?

Please NOTE: the following procedure is NOT valid for AOSP/AOKP/KitKat/CM roms.
The following instructions are exclusively for those people who are using the
Tmobile M919 stock based Jellybean 4.2.2 or 4.3 Touchwiz custom roms.
Follow the easy step by step instructions to a "T".
You can Odin flash the MK2 modem.bin while on any Jellybean Touchwiz 4.2.2 based rom
or ODIN flash it after flashing the Infamous v9, Wicked v9.1, or any M919 MK2 JB based
Touchwiz 4.3 roms. Either way it makes no difference.
What does make a difference is to follow this step by step exactly.
First download the MK2 modem.bin from the link below:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/1gsjokadys4l89x/modem.bin
#1: Manually power down the phone by using the power button only.
#2: Start ODIN and put the MODEM.BIN file into ODIN'S PHONE slot.
#3: Put the phone into download mode using the volume down and power button.
#4: Plug the USB cable into the phone and into the computer.
#5: Make sure that ODIN'S [COM:xx] lights up.
#6: Un-Check the Auto-Reboot in ODIN and click START.
#7: After its done flashing unplug the usb cable.
#8: Manually power off the phone by using the power button only.
#9: Wait 30 or so seconds before you power on the phone.
After doing this the MK2 baseband should show up in About Device.
Once it displays MK2 you can flash any MK2 JB TW 4.3 custom cwm/twrp
zip file roms unless you have already flashed it before flashing the modem.bin
in which case you are done and ready to use the phone.
Good luck!

Hi Misterjunky
I do thank you for the walk through .... but unless I am really blind, I am pretty sure as per my
OP that I did follow your steps to a "T". If I missed something, PLEASE point it out for me ??
Everything goes just fine until Odin finishes the flash of the modem.bin and says FAILED.
I think the only difference is that I am running a different ROM than you mention, but you do say:
1) You can Odin flash the MK2 modem.bin while on any Jellybean Touchwiz 4.2.2 based rom
2) Or ODIN flash it after flashing the Infamous v9, Wicked v9.1, or any M919 MK2 JB based
Touchwiz 4.3 roms. Either way it makes no difference.
Now since I am running DARTHSTALKER S4 ☆ | VERSION X1 | Aroma | Multi-Carrier | 12.29.2013
( This ROM Is Based On The T-Mobile UVUEMK2 4.3 Base )
Option #1) does not apply to me ... BUT ... option #2) DOES apply to me and this ROM since DarthStalker is 4.3 based.
So I should be able to just Odin flash Modem.bin via your steps correct ?? Or am I wrong ?
Please help me ... my OCD is in overdrive atm
Thanks guys !!
.
PS: Shinyside - Yes I am only flashing Modem.bin since I am already on a MDL there is no need to flash the *MDL.tar.MD5
PSS: Vigs - you wrote "There might be something wrong with the file. The bootloader is not accepting it due to failed
authentication. Be aware that when updating, you won't see the baseband version as UVUEMK2. You'll see the old MDL one.
Yes I have tried the Modem.bin file from 3 sources and the file
is fine. I know I wont see baseband as MK2, but that's not my issue mate. The flash FAILS.

I know you're only flashing the modem. But is it just in is raw form or is it tarred? The modem bin needs to be tarred. And from your screen shot, because I can't remember off the top of my head if Odin shows the tar ext when loaded, it looks like you are just loading the actual bin file and not tarred
Since I have the exact problem I thought I'd chime in too. The problem seems to be in the response from the bootloader. That is the step which my flashing stops as well. I have followed all steps and in all the posts very carefully and it is simply not the problem.
I am just wondering what the response from the bootloader have to be for that step to be completed successfully!
I am on stock 4.2.2 I only have it rooted so still looking for some solution for the modem to be able to update 4.3 as the op!

The actual MODEM.BIN file is what needs to be loaded into Odin's "PHONE" tab/slot.
It should also work if it's a TAR file but it's best to flash it as modem.bin, that way there
is less of a chance of having a TAR file which might be or become corrupt.
The nice part about TAR or ZIP files is that we can flash multiple files in one flashing.
But if there is only one file which needs to be flashed (modem.bin) it's always best just
to flash the one file without adding compression or other changes to it.
TAR files are similar to ZIP files, they compress whatever files are inside of them
to a smaller size, but in doing so there is more of a chance that the file inside the TAR
or ZIP getting corrupted.
That's why I simply posted the modem.bin to be used by Odin, less chance of problems.
.
Hey MisterJunky,
Yes I was pretty certain that modem.bin does NOT need to be tar'd or zipped, so you also confirmed this.
Well that then leads us to a DEAD END. Since I am doing it EXACTLY the way you discribe it (with Modem.bin)
I don't know what else could be wrong. You quoted / replied to Shinyside's theory which is fine, but didn't
really reply to my thoughts .... I was wondering if it could be a issue with my ROM which is a 4.3 ROM. Although I think it doesn't matter .. ?

It's your bootloader rejecting it.
Do you have mobile Odin? It actually skips or over rides or doesn't get stopped by the bootloader verification.

found in various places here on XDA, but nothing works.
_________________________________________________
Phone: SGH-M919 ( Galaxy 4 )
Carrier: T-Mobile LTE
Location: Phoenix
Custom ROM: DARTHSTALKER S4 v.X1 (MK2 & MDL Compliant)
Android version: 4.3 <<<<---- Is this a problem Im on 4.3 ?
Baseband: M919UVUAMDL
Kernel: 3.4.0-g4fe9989-dirty.joy23 #1
SELinux status: Permissive
This is what I am doing to try to update modem.....
1. Open Odin on PC (Mobile Odin doesn't run on G4 T-Mobile.LTE USA)
2. Uncheck Auto-Reboot / Load Modem.bin in the phone tab
3. Boot the phone into Download Mode via power & vol down
4. Plug USB into PC and PHONE
5. I see the BIG GREEN DROID
In the upper left corner of the phone, in tiny font it says:
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-M919
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
CSB-OEM_CONFIG_LSB: 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: Enable
Back on Odin now.....
The ID:COM tab in Odin turns blue and looks good to go. I click on "START".
The bar above ID:COM slowly fills with green. BUT when it is finished, the box above the ID:COM
turns RED and says FAILED !!.
### SEE PICTURE BELLOW ###
Back on the phone the tiny print in the upper left corner now says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-M919
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
CSB-OEM_CONFIG_LSB: 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: Enable
START [224,1440]
SECURE CHECK FAIL : NDN
Why is it failing ??? Is it because I am on a 4.3 ROM ?
Please help me ....
Thanks

I've already posted a possible solution on my thread, but just in case, I'll repost it here: "Hm...I'm going to guess that it's maybe the Odin version that's affecting it? Here, try flashing using this version of Odin here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/1ap3sg0e2215ga6/Odin3.rar."

ALSO ... just so you all know. Mobile Odin DOES NOT RUN on a USA T-Mobile Galaxy 4 phone. Mobile Odin has documented this fact.
Any other suggestions guys ????
Thank you

I just checked the supported devices of Mobile Odin in the thread by Chainfire and it seems that the SGH - M919 - which is the T-Mobile variant of the galaxy s4 is supported http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
Can you please link the documentation that you cannot flash the modem using that tool - I just want to read it before I go flash something again and end up softbricking my device.
As for my comment that pertains to the rest of the post - I just cannot understand how it worked for so many people using Odin from your computer and now it seems like it just does not flash for anyone that has recently attempted to update the modems!

Why not try this, but before you do if you have a working rom in your phone right now
be sure to make a nandroid backup in recovery before trying the following:
Go into recovery and do a "Factory Reset" and wipe data/cache/system/dalvik cache.
Then shut down the phone, wait 20 seconds or so after shutting it down and boot back
up into Download mode and try Odin again...............
There is a 50/50 chance it will work.
Good luck!

Well I guess it is not the phone that wont run Odin, but seems that Odin Mobile Pro does not like Android 4.3

Thanks but sorry it is still a NO GO with that version of ODIN.
Alright before flashing the MK2 modem via Download Mode, try resetting the binary counter using an app called Triangle Away (its located here on xda developers). Once you install the app, please follow the instructions given. You need to be on a TouchWiz rom with a stock Samsung kernel (best way is to Odin to stock 4.2.2 MDL). This is something that I read from Chainfire's Google+ page which may be the solution:
"Still, the binary status needs to be official and the counter 0 on recent bootloaders if you want to do fun things like flash modems with for example Mobile ODIN (update coming as well). Otherwise the bootloader will mark those regions of the flash storage as protected, and they cannot be written to (causing freezes and whatnot)."
Give it a try and see what happens. The 4.2.2 bootloader isn't recent. But, who knows?
Thibor69 did resetting the counter work to flash the modem successfully?

Upgraded to 4.3 by omnifarious without flashing the radio

So, I have the omnifarious's 4.3 ROM(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532714) installed on my phone. I did not update the bootloader or baseband. The baseband is still showing MDL.
I see data drops sometimes. So, I wanted to try to upgrade the GSM modem to MK2 to see if the data drop issue goes away while staying at MDL bootloader.
When I run ODIN in download mode and just try to flash the radio from this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544612) it fails. Even doing the modem.bin alone fails.
Do I need to flash back to stock 4.2.2 to be able to update my radio?

If you want to flash back to 4.2.2 stock you can do it no problem, since your phone already has the
4.2.2 MDL modem/radio in it because you have not yet updated to the MK2 modem.bin image.
You don't need to flash back to stock to flash MK2 4.3 modem, you can flash it on 4.2.2 stock.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All you need to do is to Odin flash the MK2 MODEM.BIN to get the 4.3 MK2 baseband.
Here is the direct download link for the modem.bin file:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/1gsjokadys4l89x/modem.bin
Flash it in Odin's PHONE slot. (not pda).
Good luck!
That's what I was trying to do. I tried to flash modem.bin from Odin and it failed.
re: modem.bin
Try this MK2 modem.bin, a lot of people used this already including myself and it worked!
http://download1276.mediafire.com/db...l89x/modem.bin
Flash using Odin's PHONE slot. (NOT PDA)
Flashing guide:
Do not connect the usb cable until step #3
1: Open Odin and put this MODEM.BIN file into Odin's PHONE slot & un-check "auto reboot"
2: Power off the phone manually (power button only)
3: Restart the phone in download mode (power+vol-down)
4: Connect USB cable from phone to computer
5: Make sure that Odin's [COM:xx] lights up
6: Click START in Odin
7: When done unplug the usb cable
8: Power off the phone manually using power button only.
9: Wait 20 seconds or so before powering up the phone.
If you followed these step by step instructions you should
see MK2 in "About Phone" (Settings>More>About phone)
It does not matter which version of ODIN you are using, all ODIN versions work fine.
Good luck!

I have done these steps to the T like 5 times and it still fails.... I have no idea what else to try.
Quick question: What does the "Write protection: enable" mean in the download mode on the left top corner of the screen? Does it show that for you too? I see both status fields as "custom". What does that mean? I think something is not allowing me to overwrite the radio in this phone.

[Q] The New ODIN

While Downloading Stock ROM From SamMobile For Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660, I Came Across The Following Instructions To Install The Stock ROM:
Instructions:
Extract (unzip) the firmware file
Download Odin v3.09
Extract Odin zip-file
Open Odin v3.09
Reboot phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait a few minutes

I Just Wanted To Ask IF It was Possible To Flash Gio With The New ODIN (v3.09)?
The newest Odin is 4.42 and we use it already for more than a year, so Odin 3.09 is even older
Just use 4.42 and you'll be fine.
