[Q] Pretty advanced question. - HTC One X

Hey there XDA,
I'm new here and watched the noob video just so you know. I think I'm onto something pretty advanced.
I have rooted my phone (HTC one x, euro version) before and I have NOT made a recovery before I did that. I installed AOKP and because I did not read everything I screwed it up completely. My phone was 'bricked'. I've brought it to some guy who fixes phones for cash, now I have NO idea what he did to my phone because he wouldn't tell me. (Ofcourse, he wouldn't make any money anymore if he told me which is reasonable).
I really would like to know if my phone is still rootable. The bootloader is relocked at the moment and I REALLY want to get root acces. But I'm scared to ruin it because I'm on 4.1.1 and I think there is no root for 4.1.1 yet. I am also scared to do a factory reset and get back to android 4.0.1 because that might brick my phone again. (The latest update for my HTC worked though). That's why I will include a message with my software info. Maybe some of you guys know what he's done to my phone, and if it's still possible for me to root my phone and MAYBE someday get a custom ROM on there.
I think this is alot to ask but searching on the net didn't give me alot of information. Sorry for the long thread and please, If i'm in the wrong forum tell me so I am aware of that.

By the way, If I go into the official STOCK recovery mode I get a screen with a red exclamation mark and some kind of hard disk. I do not know if this is normal.

You say Euro version, do you have the Evita or Endevarou? You check by going into bootloader.

Moved to international One X forum (sounds like you have the Tegra 3 version, not the krait version)

Hello, thanks for replying.
It sais Endeavoru when I go into the bootloader.

Rooting is the still exactly the same as it was for ICS ! Going into the stock recovery will indeed show that sign. We are not supposed to go in there....that's why the warning sign !
He probably just ran a ruu and updated the phone to Jellybean !
A factory reset will not bring you back to your old version of android

Before I brought the phone to that guy I've tried doing that by myself. Got some sort of program and ran an RUU but it failed. Are you saying it is still possible for me to root it? I have no idea what went wrong with the AOKP Rom though. If I make a backup with titanium backup can I always return to stock rom when I mess up? I know these are basic questions but I'd rather be sure this time.

You probably had the wrong ruu ! And yes you can unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and then the most important !!!
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP ! Lol
After that flash different roms of your liking.
Give these commands
Fastboot getvar version-main
Fastboot oem readcid
And post back the outcome

C:\Fastboot>fastboot oem readcid
... INFODEBUG: cid: HTC__E11
OKAY [ 0.036s]

Is there anything that you see that may prevent me from rerooting and reinstalling another ROM?

Cool another dutchie
Nah you can unlock and flash away. As long as you keep your nandroid safe (if not...there are plenty stock nandroid available for us. All 401 stocks work with all cids)
So go ahead if you want....

Can you link me to a 'basic' rooting guide here on XDA? I'm pretty scared that the software the other guy installed might ruin the root. I'm willing to try though since I think there isn't alot to go wrong with rooting.. What about this? Is this One X supported? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953

Nah don't go there. Stay in the phone specific forum !

Will I get into any trouble since the bootloader sais RELOCKED?
Also, I found a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIeq8Jx28cs
If I follow all steps in this video will this work? Also, do I need CWM to get superuser/root?
Sorry for asking all these questions. I REALLY need to get this done the right way.

No the bootloader will go from relocked to unlocked. Then flash a custom recovery. Make a nandroid backup and install a custom rom, those are already rooted (and tweaked by the pro's)
Please don't use video's, most of the time outdated !

At the moment I'm only interested in rooting, since it gives me acces to new apps etc. Since there are ways on XDA now that I do not know and don't even know how to use ("EASIEST ROOT METHOD - 'RECOVERY + SUPERSU'") I think I should stay away from it.
Oh:
From what I understand: You download clockworkmod release, install it on your pc and flash the SuperSU file on your phone. Is that everything? Seems pretty easy...

No you unlock the bootloader with the unlock_code.bin file by flashing it from the pc to the phone. Then flash a recovery from the pc to the phone. Then install superuser.zip from within the new recovery.
All flashing is done with the phone in the bootloader and commands from the pc.

Don't you have your phone rooted when you unlock the bootloader?
I'm sorry, some things that are on xda I dont quite understand so I find it hard to know what EXACTLY to do.

No a phone is never rooted. The phone is unlocked and you need to root the rom.
Root applies to software, not hardware

Alright well I think I'm going to have to do some more research, as I don't get alot of terms since english isn't my main language (I'm a dutchie as you said). You unlock the bootloader at htcdev.com. I know how to do that I've done it before, once you unlock the bootloader you can flash the file 'super SU'? and then you have root acces?

No
1: unlock
2: flash a custom recovery
3: install su with that recovery

ok, i think you've tried to flash a stock rom without flashing a stock recovery !!.
do you have fasboot adb on your pc ?
you need to unlock your bootloader and re flash a custom recovery
if not search the dev section for a tool that will unlock your boot and re-flash a custom recovery for you-all the instructions are on there.
once you have re unlocked and flashed a custom recovery,go into recovery and see if there are any backups of the previous rom (nand)
see if that works ..

According to the hboot (1.12) you need a 2.17 based ruu .... but i can't find it !
Tthe basic steps now are
Unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
Get your nandroid backup there,(the vodap021 2.17) you need to flash the boot.img file from that nandroid with fastboot commands, then do a full wipe in recovery and restore the nandroid.
But you still have to fix the fastboot part right ? You need to install android SDK/java SDK and the HTC drivers. Then you have to put the phone in the bootloader and open a commandprompt from inside the folder where the adb/fastboot files are located ...they are in a subfolder in the installed javaSDK install folder

Thanks, it is beginning to make some sense to me now.
So first bit I got to do is the fastboot issue, which is tha last bit you mentioned right?
And after unlock boot loader than flash the recovery with one you provided in the link, tx
So that means I will go back to stock right?
Yes unlock, flash custom recovery, flash boot.img, full wipe in recovery, restore the nandroid, flash back the stock recovery .....
And yes this way you go back to stock and i will also give you the download link for the stock recovery. This one is the last you flash after restoring everything
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
Then you are able to update to JB from within the phones software update menu
Ps you do not have to relock the bootloader anymore !

Please guys, iWe spent all day trying to figure it out, after wipe phone reboots constantly and when if boot screen it's not charging so I'm prob going to run out of battery in a couple of hours
You restore through the custom recovery. Power+vol , choose recovery. If you flashed the recovery ok then you can do from in there. Ie mount usb, copy over your nand backup and restore it. You may have to flash the boot.img using fastboot.

[Help] Installing AOKP/JB over 4.0.4 ViperX

Hi there,
I am currently old venom rom (2.7.1) based on ICS (4.0.4), I want to switch to Jellybean/AOKP with JB base.
Do I need to go through the whole relocking bootloader, getting CID , flashing update fiasco? because I sort of lost my unlock code.bin file and those seem a little too much work. In any case, I'm very much of a novice, so I'd be extremely grateful to anyone who could tell me the next steps in a bit of details/laymen

Make backups of what's really important on the phone. Then boot to the bootloader and relock the bootloader
Fastboot oem lock
Keep the phone in the relocked bootloader and execute the ruu with a right click and select run as administrator
After the ruu you boot the phone and start searching for OTA's in the phones menu. And update to JB !
Then unlock again, flash a custom recovery and flash any rom available in this forum for the hox. Just get a new unlock code !
ok

Edit :
Did the update install complete, was there any sign of a problem during the update ?
no
Finally managed it in the third try, in the third try, the data cable was unhooked....makes no sense but that might have been the problem, or something else. But none of that matters now since I've got jb and have successfully unlocked the bootloader again. Could you suggest me a good cwm? Should I stick to the 5.8 or 6.0 ?
In any cases, I owe you big time...thanks a lot

Have you installed the proper drivers on your PC?
Before installing RUU, try the command "fastboot devices" to see if it's recognizing your device.
Edit: You'll have to do that from a folder with fastboot in it or you have to have fastboot in your PATH info.

Yeah, but actually this one still seems like doesnt sort out my issue, I did find the right nandroid backup and I would flash it in recovery if I had any..
Don't forget that right at the beginning I was about to go for stock Rom, so I did flash stock recovery and I locked the bootloader.... So the question now is if I can flash again some recovery (which one) while my bootloader is relocked. Or should I go ahead and do relock the bootloader again and than flash recovery...? Sorry but I am still a bit lost, and I dont wanna my HOX to become a brick.... Thx

Looks like you can't go back to stock, there is no RUU, no nandroid backup.
You could still ask if somebody is willing to post a nandroid backup for your CID and version, and in the meanwhile you can unlock your bootloader again, flash a custom recovery and flash a ROM (+boot.img) of your choice that fits your hboot version.

[Q] HTC One X - back to stock for warranty - no service or wifi

So my HTC One X is having issues were the screen sometimes just does't turn on at all (stays black) it started of with massive graphical artifacts all across the screen and now it will turn on from time to time but is not very reliable.
I had Cyanogenmod installed and from what I have read I had to get it back to stock to receive warranty. I had a backup from before installing cyanogenmod, so I just ran a restore on it and the phone now has the old HTC Sense, however it will not connect to any network and will not turn the Wi-fi on for some reason.
My questions are the following.
Do you think I need to get the network/wi-fi working again to receive repairs under warranty ??
Here is the phones' current state : (See image file in attachements)
With android 4.1.1 htc sense. Apart from re-locking the bootloader and flashing the old recovery software do I need to do anything else to get the warranty repairs ?
Thanks in advance!! Ask me anything if needed, will answer asap.
Did you flash the boot image for the backup
Sent from my One X using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Not sure if I have to be honest, but then wouldn't the phone just get stuck on a boot loop if the boot img was incorrect ?
If you are not sure you didn't .... Flash the boot.img from the nand, make a full wipe and restore the nand.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!! :highfive:
I just assumed that if the phone was starting that I didn't have too flash the boot.img.
I have followed this guide androidauthority.com/one-x-revert-stock-recovery-76854/
to get the stock recovery back on the phone.
Do I need to do anything else other then re-locking the bootloader for the warranty repairs to go through fine ?
Also as far as I know it will say that the bootloader is "Relocked" not that it is "Locked" does that matter ?
We can't make it locked only relocked. If it's hardware issues they should provide warranty just fine. But we can't tell that for sure

How can I check what recovery I have installed. I can't reboot the phone into recovery mode as it never displays anything on the screen when I try and do that (probably due to the hardware issue that I am having), is there and adb or other command that I could use for this ?
Give the outcome of fastboot getvar version-main

C:\Android\sdk\platform-tools>fastboot getvar version-main

finished. total time: 0.006s
Also I still have the SuperSu app installed but I no longer have root access so I can't delete it now. Should I just leave it ?
Flash this one over and it's fine

And yes delete the su , always good to do

Got an issue, now that it's 4.2.2 there doesn't seem to be a way of rooting your device and I can't go back to the older version since I have stock recovery, and can't install CWM recovery either because I don't have root access ;/
I tried using this knowyourmobile.com/htc/htc-one/17426/how-root-your-htc-one-x
to root and now phone is stuck on boot loop, damn
Ok, so I have managed to get CWR back onto the phone but now I have no way of putting the old recovery image onto the phones because of the boot loop, so I can't restore the old nandroid.
Wait.....you got your stock backup ? Enter the recovery, make a full wipe and restore the nand.

Right I got rid of everything and flashed the recovery img you linked too, but when I try to go into recovery through the bootloader I get a red triangle with an exclamation mark. I might just leave it like that or is that an issue ? OTA works fine.
What you see there is the warning sign of the stock recovery

I need an HTC One M8 Telus/Koodo RUU for my phone. I flashed GPE Rom and it works great but i want the 5.0 update of my carrier but i can't flash it because i am on a custom rom so i would like to revert back to stock in order to flash the 5.0 update.
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated

Go back to stock, and take the OTAs. Then re-root and enjoy your new firmware.

Incorrect. This is the method that you use if you are not S-Off.
If you were S-Off, you would just update firmware manually, with no need to go back to stock.
thanks for your help!
ok the second link you posted led me to a canadian nandroid backup.
thanks a lot for your help man
Edit: my hboot is 3.18 and its the only one missing
what should i do?

I would suggest asking if anyone has a link to one in that thread.
I'm on Telus too, but I am running WWE firmware. I ALWAYS have the new firmware before Telus. Just sayin.
S-Off is a good thing to have. I know it seems like $25 is a lot to pay to get it, but if you think of all the hassle it saves trying to update firmware, and the other freedom it gives you (I'm using the Sprint Harman/Kardon version's audio files and ADSP) it is very reasonably priced.

Use 3.34.661.4 backup for 4.4.4 but wifi will not work on your device yet because you have hboot 3.18.0000
Find the 2.23.661.2 -> 3.34.661.4 - thanks @shaboobla on this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Extract out firmware.zip from that OTA zip (with 7-zip)
then you can flash this firmware in RUU mode (but you need to relock bootloader because your device is S-On)
Later .. you can check software update and accept OTA to 4.20.661.2

yea i was going to do it and also for the sake of completeness flashing the stock recovery(3.34.661.4) after the restore, just in case someone else has the same problem
You can do that but not really needed because the signed firmware.zip will restore stock recovery.

oh didnt know that, i guess i wont then
I just wanted to thank you guys for helping me out!
I did everything and now i am on android 5.0.1 (although i ran into a small problem: process com.android.phone is not responding, factory reset from recovery fixed it)
Hope this thread helps someone else with similar problems

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, but I'm trying to get my htc one m8 up and running again. It was functioning on lineage os but wasn't very stable, couldn't find any other roms that would successfully flash on it, I decided to try and go back to stock after a few beers one night night, now the phone has been sitting in a drawer with no os or recovery on it. There doesn't seem to be any still functioning links to any Canadian RUU's that I can use. I'm not s-off, bootloader is "relocked". I'd like to go back to stock marshmallow because I only use this thing to play music and as a tv remote. I'm hoping someone might have an old RUU lying around.
I guess if not my best option is just to unlock the bootloader again and try flashing the same lineage os again. Since I relocked does that mean I have to go through the htc website to get the unlock token again like I did ages ago? They probably don't even have this phone on there anymore. Hopefully I didn't actually turn this thing into a brick.
Please see my comments in red font below:

Photo link is coming up with 404 error for me. Better to do fastboot getvar all, then post the results (cut and paste from command prompt), so we can see all the info on the phone (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

If you can be more specific about which ROMs you tried (plus info about your device from getvar as noted above), then we might be able to advise why they did not flash. Did you get error messages, and if so, what exactly were they?
I decided to try and go back to stock after a few beers one night night, now the phone has been sitting in a drawer with no os or recovery on it.
What exactly did you do (step by step, with any relevant file names, etc. - more detail is better).
I presume you intentionally relocked the bootloader in attempt to run some RUU. But would like clarification on this (and where that happened in the sequence of events)

Far as I know, Canadian versions don't have RUU.

One option (maybe the best one) is to restore a stock TWRP back from the collection: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
You will need to unlock the bootloader to do this. You can either reuse the unlock bin code you used originally (if you still have it). Otherwise, you should be able to request a new bin code from HTCDev.com. Far as I know, that still works for this phone.
