[Q] Help, fastboot loop stuck - HTC One X

hi, i need help with this.
QUick run down on my story, bought the phone and found out that it is rooted so wanted to go back to stock and ended up getting it stuck on fastboot loop.
Im only new to this and found the thread in developers area with guidance on how to fix this but im getting very confused as to what i need to do and what files i need downloaded including ruu, im from AU and there isnt many ruus for voda 021 floating around. I would be happy tho if i can flash it to same rooted state as it was as long i get it working again.
Can someone give me some pointers pls, the way that thread with instruction is written is very hard for me to understand because some basic steps are skipped prob because orger understand them but im very nooby and cant work with it

ok, i think you've tried to flash a stock rom without flashing a stock recovery !!.
do you have fasboot adb on your pc ?
you need to unlock your bootloader and re flash a custom recovery
if not search the dev section for a tool that will unlock your boot and re-flash a custom recovery for you-all the instructions are on there.
once you have re unlocked and flashed a custom recovery,go into recovery and see if there are any backups of the previous rom (nand)
see if that works ..

help?:crying:

According to the hboot (1.12) you need a 2.17 based ruu .... but i can't find it !
Tthe basic steps now are
Unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
Get your nandroid backup there,(the vodap021 2.17) you need to flash the boot.img file from that nandroid with fastboot commands, then do a full wipe in recovery and restore the nandroid.
But you still have to fix the fastboot part right ? You need to install android SDK/java SDK and the HTC drivers. Then you have to put the phone in the bootloader and open a commandprompt from inside the folder where the adb/fastboot files are located ...they are in a subfolder in the installed javaSDK install folder

Thanks, it is beginning to make some sense to me now.
So first bit I got to do is the fastboot issue, which is tha last bit you mentioned right?
And after unlock boot loader than flash the recovery with one you provided in the link, tx
So that means I will go back to stock right?

Yes unlock, flash custom recovery, flash boot.img, full wipe in recovery, restore the nandroid, flash back the stock recovery .....
And yes this way you go back to stock and i will also give you the download link for the stock recovery. This one is the last you flash after restoring everything
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
Then you are able to update to JB from within the phones software update menu
Ps you do not have to relock the bootloader anymore !

Please guys, iWe spent all day trying to figure it out, after wipe phone reboots constantly and when if boot screen it's not charging so I'm prob going to run out of battery in a couple of hours

You restore through the custom recovery. Power+vol , choose recovery. If you flashed the recovery ok then you can do from in there. Ie mount usb, copy over your nand backup and restore it. You may have to flash the boot.img using fastboot.

well as i understand you need to revert to device's stock condition
as far as i know only way to do it is by RUU or individually flashing every image. RUU is easily done but as you mentioned you get error messages try finding out what those error messages mean
common messages are
cant connect to device----ensure you are in fastboot usb mode
version problems----check weather you are using the right RUU (RUU is different for diferent regions) one RUU can have more than one versions so be sure which one you need
and you also need to lock you bootloader before running RUU
let me know if anything works
take a complete backup and make a goldcard just in case..you never know what may happen

Actually, this 's-on' and 's-off' is very much important. You can flash any stock rom with s-off but not that easily with s-on. I'm a noob so I can't really explain further. Search for it!

i got same problem some days ago.cant port ruu and remove cwm.
so first of all you find your ruu from football's marvel collection or search on internet.if its in .zip file its very good extract it,you ll find recovery.img,boot.img and system.img
or if its in .exe file.first try installation wizard if its fail.again start installation wizard and then keep it on dont update bootloader just go to temp folder.(C:\Users\[LoginName]\AppData\Local\Temp\{82B23FCD-D5D0-45CA-A3A2-5350D3926551}) in this you will have see rom.zip file extract it.you ll find
recovery.img,boot.img and system.img then,
remove battery (power +volume down) to going in hboot then click on fastboot then plug your phone usb with computer open cmd and type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
you can see fastboot file in your extracted zip.by this way you manually port stock rom.i tried it and it successfully possible.but i use my original stock rom, ages when i used europe rom it failed.
and please be careful in type commands it ll brick your phone if you doing anything wrong..maybe it ll help you
and yes one thing read this thread carefully i recommand third method which i mentioned here.

[Q] HOX could not go into recover mode in HBoot

Hi to all,
Good day to all who is reading and helping.
I am not very sure if this question have been asked before but looking at the first few pages of tread, I did not come across this question, else i am pretty much blind. heehee.
I am having this problem with my rooted HTC One X (asia version). Previously I could go into the recovery mode in Hboot to perform backup and recovery but recently when I select recovery at Hboot, the phone with show a logo of a phone surrounded by green circular arrows and followed by a logo of a phone with a huge exclamation mark. It will remain so until I press and hold the power button to restart the phone.
The phone is working fine otherwise.
Is there any way for me to get the recovery to work again? I am using clockwork mod btw.
Could any bro or sis help me with the above issue?
Thank you all in advance.
Cheers
It seems to me that you have the stock recovery installed. You can flash the cwm custom recovery again.....
Or did u get a notification from an update to JB in your running OS. Boot it up and check if you have an update waiting.

What do you mean by stock recovery installed?
Yes, I have a JB update waiting to be installed.
Previously I have to go through some steps to prevent my rooting from being wipe out before performing an OTA update and one of them is to head into the recovery of Hboot before running some app to prevent the removal of root.
Just a quick info, I did not install custom rom on my phone, just a stock rooted phone.
Thank you.
If everything is 100% stock except the recovery , you have to flash the stock recovery back. It tries to update to JB but it runs in an error because of the (what i assume now) custom cwm recovery

No, I have not perform the JB update yet.
I am just trying to access the recovery at HBoot but got that error.

Thank you.
Don't know really, well if you flash the stock recovery over the existing one you will have for certain the stock
And if you downloaded the update it will continue to try to update everytime you enter the recovery, you said you are using clockworkmod recovery (5.8.4.0 ?)

If you go into HBOOT and select recovery and you are getting those green arrows, you have the right recovery for installing the JB stock OTA so you don't need CWM yet, Does it say relocked or locked at the top of the HBOOT screen mate?
If it's unlocked, run the command, "fastboot oem lock" as you need to have the HBOOT locked with stock recovery installed for the OTA to install
Also the OTA won't delete any apps or settings

Actually, that exclamation mark you are mentioning is ringing alarm bells, you may need to reflash the stock recovery via fastboot, can you post a pic of the recovery screen you get? I will be home in an hour and can upload the file you need

Hi MarcelHofs,
Thanks for taking time to look into my problem.
Hey, you have a great day at work thought overtime doesn't sound too nice a thing.
Cheers and thanks again.
Hi home now
what you need to do is put the attachment into your fastboot folder (where your unlocktoken.bin was when you unlocked your bootloader.)
Since your bootloader is unlocked, boot your phone into fastboot and then connect it to your pc
open a command prompt and link it to your fastboot folder (cd c:\fastboot - or whatever your path to this folder is)
then type the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed_1.28.img
then type the command
fastboot oem lock
your Hboot/bootloader should then say relocked at the top and you will have the stock recovery installed.
reboot the phone, download the update and before long you should be basking in the fabled JB goodness
let me know if any problems

Just trid that to version 1-28 I think and I'm getting the dreaded red triangle
I thought that was a clean versio so maybe something else is wrong. Any ideas?
Uhm wait .... You flashed back a 1.28 stock recovery on a 3.14 rom. That's not going to work.
And what is your goal now actually after the restore ?
And where do you get a red triangle ? When you boot up the phone or when you try to enter the stock recovery ?
When you enter a stock recovery there will always be a warning sign like you describe, we are not supposed to go in there
This is a stock 3.14 recovery

OK, I have now flashed 3.14 and booted into it. first time around it showed the normal icon for a while and then restored my system. Second time around when I booted into recovery is shows the red triangle over the image of a screen. Flashing CWM seems to be ok.
bootloader version: 1.36.0000
version-main: 3.14.161.27
cid: has changed to VODAP001
Should I startt again from the nandroid?
My aim is to fully restore the phone to stock and then lock it before I bring it back to the shop for hardware repair on the yellow/brown patch.
Does the phone boot up properly ?
I don't know if there is a nandroid that also matches your cid ?
Fastboot oem readcid
Will tell the real cid.
Do that and we check if there is one actually available.

yep, it boots ok into wwm (after reflash) and into the main system but not into recovery if I flash stock.
I can make calls etc and everything seems normal.
Only software issue now seems to be that I can't flash stock recovery successfully
So when you flash the stock recovery the phone does not boot ?
Oke give the cid with the command, lets check that out
Crap....you wrote it in the title....overread it all the way !!!
I have an idea that might work !
Get the nandroid 2.17.161 vodap 001 and restore that one completely !
Then flash back this recovery
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wbav46spkbznovp/stock recovery 2.17.img
Then boot up the phone and update with official ota.
It worked before with and O2 nandroid .... Its worth a shot mate

Phone itself works with stock recovery but it won't boot into stock recovery itself without red triangle.
I've just been trying to change the cid with "fastboot oem writecid VODAP019" but I keep gettin either "too many links" or "unknow error". Itried tried but with the phone locked and unlocked :crying:
I'll keep trying to see if that will let me flash the stock recovery successfully and boot into it.
Mick
Hahaha that's the trick, the stock recovery is supposed to give you that warning sign ! That is absolutely normal. When you see that triangle screen you press volume - and power and it should enter the stock recovery. (Could also be volume +, can't recall it in my mind atm)
And you can't write a cid, we need S-OFF to do that .....

immediately follwed by the main system update as expected
Yeah that's because the stock recovery can't mount it, the error is also normal. There is not much to do with the stock recovery.....
If the updates go well you het back the original stock JB rom and cid back !
Is it working .... the updates ?

Hi, the updates took a long time to download. Everything is now working and back to stock.
Thanks for all your help and patience.

Good ! Hope you get the fix sorted too
CASE CLOSED !
Sorry for reviving an old thread. But this one seems closest to what I'm stuck on, so hopefully someone can help.
I was running a viperX rom on my htc one X for quite sometime, after updating the rom it was working fine but all of a sudden it stopped picking up any mobile network. Stupidly I deleted everything from recovery (cache, data on the sd card, the android OS, everything!). - No backup unfortunately.
I read about going back to stock, re-locked the bootloader and attempted to install via an RUU. My HTC One X is exactly the same as the one by mccmick, running 3.14.161.27 of the HTC software. Can't find an RUU for it anywhere.
But what do I do now? It ran out of battery, so I used command prompt to get the phone to change a little bit, then re unlocked the bootloader using hasoon2000's tool kit and installed the lastest version of CWM recovery so the phone can charge via mains.
There is no root access on the phone at the moment, can't access the internal sd card to put any ROM or superSU files on there. Mounting the sdcard for usb use via recovery does not work.
How do I resolve? I can't put a nondroid backup to the phone. Ideally I would like to go back to stock, but even if I can just install a rom and get everything working again, I'd be very happy.
Is there any command prompts I can use to send files over to the phone? Send a kernel, rom and root files over?
Should mention my phones cid is VODAP001 and running 3.14.161.27.

Have you installed the proper drivers on your PC?
Before installing RUU, try the command "fastboot devices" to see if it's recognizing your device.
Edit: You'll have to do that from a folder with fastboot in it or you have to have fastboot in your PATH info.

Looks like you are connected, so I don't know why the RUU cannot find your device.
I have tried it again, and Ruu found my phone, but bootloader error appeared:
The ROM update utility cannot update your android phone. Please get the correct ROM update utility and try again...
Any ideas where to get the corect one for vodafone UK???

Yeah, but actually this one still seems like doesnt sort out my issue, I did find the right nandroid backup and I would flash it in recovery if I had any..
Don't forget that right at the beginning I was about to go for stock Rom, so I did flash stock recovery and I locked the bootloader.... So the question now is if I can flash again some recovery (which one) while my bootloader is relocked. Or should I go ahead and do relock the bootloader again and than flash recovery...? Sorry but I am still a bit lost, and I dont wanna my HOX to become a brick.... Thx

Looks like you can't go back to stock, there is no RUU, no nandroid backup.
You could still ask if somebody is willing to post a nandroid backup for your CID and version, and in the meanwhile you can unlock your bootloader again, flash a custom recovery and flash a ROM (+boot.img) of your choice that fits your hboot version.

[Q] New One M8, old HTC user: Need help understanding a few things

Hello All,
So I recently bought a M8 and I just need some help in getting the steps nailed down correctly. Be warned long post with lots of questions...
Code:
fastboot getvar version-main
version-main: 3.32.111.3
fastboot oem readcid
(bootloader) cid: T-MOB101
That is basically my device, now due to it being 4.4.4 from factory I am unable to use Sunshine & Weaksauce. I could wait until the new year but why
bother .
First step:
Get my factory firmware image after reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376 due to it being a T-Mobile and
Germany and 4.4.4 I am unable to run the command listed there to get the stock recovery, so how do I get the stock recovery for my device? @BerndM14
Has provided me with a link to download the latest firmware for my device but it has the TWRP recovery inside it, link is this one: http://www.handy-
faq.de/forum/htc_one_m8_custom_roms/304821-htc_one_m8_firmwaresammlung_ruus_otas_backups.html#post2832636. I should point out that I do have a OTA
waiting to download and install, should I download and install it? The version listed on the screen is 3.32.111.9 and is only 183.73MB. Would it have a
viable stock recovery? Can I downgrade to a older version for the stock recovery?
Second step:
Once the above is done and dusted my next step is getting root & S-OFF & custom recovery. This is relatively simple because all I need to do is visit
HTCDev, unlock and then S-OFF with Sunshine and then a custom recovery. Correct? Sounds and looks simple enough.
Third step:
Download ROM of choice and flash away. So I am going with InsertCoin due to user loyalty from the Desire days . However I see people in the thread
mentioning that they flashed the latest firmware to sort out a couple of issues, I take it they mean the ROM file and not HTC firmware?
Fourth and probably not needed step:
Changing the phone to WWE and SuperCID? Do I really need to do this? Benefit of changing to WWE is changing the HBOOT to a more universal one? The
reason why I am thinking of converting is because I would want to get rid of the red text on the boot screen as listed here: http://forum.xda-
developers.com/showpost.php?p=51744965&postcount=1 however for T-Mobile Dutch the HBOOT CIDS are T-MOB003, if I flash that would it cause a problem?
I would also be looking at running the commands to change the flags showing tampered and unlocked but that looks simple to do. Am I missing anything? For warranty purposes I would use the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2710735 but download the recovery file for T-MOB Germany instead?
Thank you for reading the long post and I hope that I have made some sort of sense.
Yes it will have the firmware.zip with the recovery.img inside it. Even the small 47MB or so, OTA update for the WWE from 2.22.401.4 - 2.22.401.5 had the firmware.zip inside. So just download the OTA.zip copy to PC extract firmware.zip and grab the recovery.img.
Benefits to converting to WWE or even Developer edition also includes the fact that those devices will receive OTA updates before any carrier version, directly from HTC. It's a bonus if you're into the "latest & greatest" scene.
As for making a backup before flashing custom recovery, have you tried booting the custom recovery? Philz will probably be better if you want to use the booted custom recovery to make a backup of stock recovery. You could also try and boot either TWRP or Philz and see if you can root your device without flashing custom recovery, that way you can at least use the dd command to grab a copy of the recovery block. <My preferred method, though it's a terrible circle. Need to flash custom recovery to root, need root to make backup of stock recovery... So hopefully booting the custom recovery will work. That being said, easiest way still remains to grab it from the OTA.zip.
Perhaps you could even upload a copy of the OTA.zip and share it on here, I don't think the OP has a copy in the second post
ROM/Firmware. You need the latest firmware to run the latest ROM. For most it'll be firmware with 3.x. If you still run on 2.x(which you aren't) you'd have some problems with radio(bluetooth, gps, wifi, data etc)
Thank you for the reply .
To be honest I have not tried booting a custom recovery because I saw this in the first post of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
fastboot boot recovery_filename.img (this does not work on the latest 3.xx firmwares !!! we need to get the stock recoveries from the OTA files)

So I am not sure what to try to be honest. This toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51383278&highlight=ota#post51383278 mentions getting root without S-OFF but with a unlocked bootloader. So I am thinking that if I follow those steps, maybe when I get to the reboot phase I can execute a nandroid instead which might get me the files I want?
I won't bother with WWE then. I will rely on the dev's to give me the latest & greatest .

Hm, yeah I also had some problems booting a recovery, but I just tested it out again. I can at least boot TWRP version 2.8.3.0 so it still works for me. I'm on 3.28.1540.5 (Developer edition). Haven't tried Philz though, net a bit too slow to bother with even a small download
No problem. I am busy downloading the OTA.zip and once complete I will try the toolkit method and see what happens . Again, thank you for the reply.
I need some help... My phone seems to be stuck in fastboot mode and is not picked up in Device Manager of Windows. I can touch the fastboot screen and it vibrates but it does not nothing. I have held down the power button for 20 seconds with no result. I had just unlocked the bootloader and then tried pushing the Philz recovery image to the device with the command line:
Code:
C:\android\sdk\android\platform-tools>fastboot boot philz_touch_6.57.8-m8.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.541s]
booting...
OKAY [ 0.002s]
finished. total time: 1.547s
*edit*
Holding volume up + power for 10 seconds helped *whew*...

You don't need S-Off to root, just the unlocked bootloader, custom recovery, and superuser.
@xunholyx Thanks for the post . I am trying to get an image of my stock recovery file first, so I am trying to avoid flashing the custom recovery right now . BTW Does anyone know if TWRP makes a backup of the stock recovery before overwriting it like Philz does?

You can use any 3.32 based stock recovery for your phone. There are plenty of backups for that on this thread. No need to backup your own.
Thank you guys! That helps me a lot! Off I go to flash a custom recovery .
