My brother bought his phone outright from att and I want to use it on tmobile, will they unlock it since it's paid for or will they make it a hassle?

u should ask this in the AT&T Galaxy s4 forum... you'll get a quicker and accurate response
1 should be posted in Q and A, and 2 you may have more luck posting in the ATT section. There may be someone here to help, but thr majority of us are on tmobile and have been for a while. But there is a couple of people who have jumped ship recently.

AT&T has a far less restrictive policy when it comes to unlocking phones verses T-Mobile, even after the "international travelers" change. When I unlocked a phone from AT&T it was all taken care of via online chat - and the phone was not paid off, still early in contract.
Read this thread over in the AT&T GS# Forum, the steps will apply to any AT&T phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962453&highlight=unlock+galaxy+s3

Actually a 1 minute call to AT&T would probably get you the answer quickest.

Here is my plan. Buy a t-mobile note 2. Unlock it and use it on AT&T until i can come up with the money to cancel my contract with them then switch my plan to T-Mobile.
My question is, can i flash the t-mobile note 2 with a AT&T rom to enable 4g while i use it on AT&T still?
I searched and found these 2 threads. showthread.php?t=2096495 & showthread.php?t=2026571, but they didnt answer my question in full and they seem rather old and before it was discovered that the T-Mobile and AT&T note 2 have the same radio frequencies.
There is an issue with gps from what I've read. For me, it that's a deal breaker. I don't know for sure, but I'm 99% I was reading about it a couple of days ago.

Everything works 100%
Im running straight talk att mvno on my note and I get 4g speeds. GPS is fine. Go for It

You won't have lte until we get it pushed to our notes. However there is a way to enable hspa+ on at&t.

Ermmmmm im assuming you are planning on buying used? I was just thinking if not,the money to buy a new one would pretty much equal buying out your contact and getting the discount as a new tmo customer.

Hey guys,
So I just received my mom's T-Mobile S3 because she has moved on to the Note II. I have a plan AT&T, however, so I was wondering what problems I expect to receive because of this. I know that it is easy to unlock as I have done it for others before, but how are the phone bands going to be affected? Like will I be able to get AT&T 4G speeds? 3G? or just 2G?
You will get 4G speeds. Just no lte.

Oh ok. So I will be getting 4G HSPA+ or what? I thought AT&T was only 4G LTE?

I can verify this. Didn't even have to load an AT&T ROM.

You would think putting the word "question" in the title would be a good indicator that it should go in the "question" section.

Some people never grow or even do a Google search or basic reasoning skills to understand that threads can be reported to moderators without them having to read each one or that there really aren't that many new threads per day for forum.

Back to topic. AT&T's 4G is not as fast as T-Mobile just keep that in mind. While Tmobile's uses 42 download speed AT&T uses 21.
Mine d2tmo is unlocked and my friend have a d2att unlocked. We both trade sim cards to test our phones. Mine was getting 5-6mg download speed
and his was getting 10+.. You dont need a AT&T rom
I'm thinking about purchasing a note 2 from att from a friend. I understand the phones unlocked already from factory. Just needs to be rooted.
Now I know Clean rom is an international rom and when you flash it asks what carrier like Verizon etc. If I got a att phone and used Clean rom and flashed it for Verizon on att is this how it would work for me?
Anyone with experience know?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
The general rule of thumb is no.
Verizon is cdma but maybe this will help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
Cdma phones generally canot be used on gsm networks.
Some truly "world" phones have sim cards but again the bandsare different . I remember being on the d2g forums and there was a way to send I your d2g to one of the devs and they hacked it to work.
But more than likely you will never get the full benefit of the lhone thats made specifically for the carrier.
Read the link .
Imo these kind of things are fruitless and a waste of time.
But hey go for it.
Fully? No. It won't work at ALL. incompatible technologies, and Verizon will only activate Verizon phones on their network.

Absolutely and my bad about my previous post, i missread what you wrote.
Sorry if there was any confusion from it. You can flash phones from verizon to other carriers like cricket who share the same type of bw, and possibly hack them to other networks but as entropism said , what you were asking is not possible. Even if you could, the later of entropism's post is what kills it.
Always hated that about big red.
And I stand by what I said.
Imo complete waste of time.

Thinking of buying a blocked att imei phone .Will this unlock so i can use it at work on tmobile network?.

Why don't you just buy unlocked international version ?
Sent from my GT-I9505G using xda app-developers app

No you can't. That's how much the phone costs. You must pay the full amount.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium HD app
I know you can, the only question is will it be compatible hardware wise. There is a guide on how to unlock it through the dialer menu, if you are up to it. Or T-Mobile will unlock it for you if you are a customer. :good:
You can but he's taking about a phone on contact. You can't buy a contact phone and not pay the monthly service

Yes it is possible. but the problem isn't unlocking. the problem is that the phone costs around $600 dollars unlocked. the reason why it costs $199 on contract is because it is on contract and the company knows that they will have you for at least 2 years. and also because the monthly bill costs more.
So, if you want to send an S4 to your bro, you have to pay the full amount of around $600
Either way you decide to go, you CAN SIM-unlock the T-Mobile S4.
Yes. You can sim unlock it either way but i advice you not to buy it on contact as you will have to pay a monthly bill for a service you're not using.

I know that I was unable to get an unlock code through T-Mobile because I bought it outright from them and didn't have T-Mobile service. They did give me the option to get in touch with Samsung customer service and I would be able to get the unlock codes from them, but there was no ETA on how long it would take. Other options are to buy an unlock code from one of the many reputable sites or to try the unlock method over in General (which is free, obviously.)
