Hello everyone
I finally decided to "unlock" my HTC Desire GSM because I plan to get a new phone in some months time anyway so I thought it's worth the risk.
I managed to s-off the device with Revolutionary, then flash superuser, then flash 4ext recovery to partition my sd-card (ext4 filesystem). Then I flashed the newest radio and installed CM 7.2.0.1 with gapps and finally installed s2e.
I decided to let s2e symlink my app and private app folder. But now they are missing when I start the phone (including s2e itself and google playstore). I goggled it already but haven't found an answer really.
I have to say I use the stock sd-card that came with the desire (it's a class 2).
So my questions are:
Can you experienced users recommend me a ROM that's good concerning speed, battery life, stability or did I choose the perfect ROM already? I don't need all that bloatware that was installed with the stock rom. But I need some space on the memory, so I would need some sort of App2SD.
Also will my class 2 card be fast enough or will it slow down stuff considerably? What filesystem would you recommend for the sd-ext partition? And how can I avoid this "disappearing apps" problem in the future?
And btw can I just install apps with Titanium Backup when changing the ROM or does it mess up stuff?
I hope you people can help me a little with those questions.
This is the first time I'm "unlocking" a phone.
don't worry about 'perfect' rom, because you'll get far too many different answers from different people recommending what's best for them.
try a few roms for yourself to see what you like. CM7 should be solid anyway.
- generally all roms have some sort of app2sd built in with a script already. or you flash a different script, or activate it via terminal commands. reach each rom OP or search each thread for details.
- with CM7, you can use space a little more efficiently by switching to cm7r2 hboot, search for guides.
- your class 2 card may be too slow. i'd recommend keeping app data on internal memory. sd cards are quite cheap nowadays anyway. ext4 should be faster, so stick with it.
- regarding your specific issue with s2e and google play, don't symlink google play, best kept on system partition anyway. don't know why the other apps disappear, they shouldn't. try full wipe, flash cm7r2 hboot as above, flash rom, install s2e and reboot. then restore apps with titanium.
- i've always used titanium backup to backup and restore apps when switching roms, not had a problem. just don't restore system data. if you have problems, try just installing the apps from google play, then restore data only.

Thanks for your answers.
I still have some questions now though
First, is it right that almost all ROMs have some sort of app2sd but CM7 is not one of them? I read that CM7 has no apps2sd of any sort and that's why I installed s2e in the first place.
Second, maybe there is some advanced mode for s2e or sth but I could only click whether I want to symlink my apps, cache, data etc. as a whole like in this picture:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
I couldn't really choose which apps to symlink and which not to. So google play and s2e apps would be symlinked as well since they didn't come with the ROM I guess.
Also when I plan to flash a new ROM is it necessary/better to format/wipe the system partition as well or do I only have to wipe cache and data? Or will it be wiped by the process of flashing the ROM anyways?

CM7 doesn't have app2sd. That's what s2e was made for. The majority of roms have some kind of script. Only the really old ones lack such a thing.
S2e doesn't have an "advanced mode".You can symlink one app at a time with Link2sd. Give it a search on the play store.
Before you flash a rom, just do a factory data reset. That will wipe cache, data and sd-ext. Your system will be auto-wiped when you'll install a new rom.

Will do.
I actually looked and microsdhc cards seem to be really cheap indeed. I didn't know they were THAT cheap. If I buy one would you recommend to get a class 6 or a class 10 one? I heard that class 10 can make problems? Doesn't really matter concerning price, there seem to be class 6 cards that cost more than class 10 cards and the price difference is that small anyway.

I'm thinking of trying a MIUI rom, on my HTC Desire (Bravo A8181)
Currently i have alpharev Data++ hboot (s-off etc..)
my questions are:
1 there are 3 variations of MIUI available, which one would i need?
A2SD/A2SD+, D2W, D2EXT -PART
2 i have read that partitioning SDcard is required, is this still the case with Data++ hboot?
I've done literally days of searching online for the answers, but the many variations of details and ports are confusing me.
any advice would be awesome
Here's a quick summary of the three types of MIUI XJ I did in a reddit post.
D2EXT is a fairly fast, fairly stable script that will move the entirety of your androids /data partition to an ext2, ext3, or ext4 partition on your sd card (providing it's after your FAT32 partition).
D2W (data2whatever) is a bit less stable than D2EXT since it's much newer than D2EXT, however, it supports a larger range of partition formats, namely, reiserFS which is specifically made to increase performance and longevity of flash memory. It also moves your entire /data partition to your secondary sd card partition.
The version of A2SD which ships with MIUI XJ is a modified Darktremor A2SD script which, by default only moves /data/app and /data/app-private to an SD-ext partition. It leaves the rest of the /data partition untouched because in theory, your phones internal NAND should be faster than your SD card, however, if you have an SD card that is class4 or faster, the presumed speed decrease will be minimal, if at all. This script does support the moving of the dalvik-cache (Which, next to the actual apks themselves, takes up the most space) to the sd-ext as well.
The reason for having these is because the HTC Desire has a very small data partition and it often fills up very quickly. For MIUI XJ I usually go for the D2EXT because it's tried and true, very stable, and allows me to have up to 2GB of apks/cache data. Whereas the A2SD script still runs out of memory fairly quickly, and D2W is less (Though almost innoticably) stable.

With the data++ partition table, I'd recommend going A2SD/A2SD+ and partitioning your SD card with either ROM manager, or, if you'd like I can link you to a tutorial I wrote up. If you still find yourself running out of space, then maybe you should consider running D2EXT.

Thanks for the info, very informative, clears a lot of questions that i had
so if i understand correctly, i could try the A2SD/A2SD+ version on my current data++ partition table, as long as i have partitioned my sd card with either ext/2/3/4 ?
if i could get the link to the tutorial, that would be awesome thanks
What are your thoughts on miui in comparison to the stock htc sense?
thanks
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php Download this, and burn it to a CD/DVD or put it on a USB drive, the instructions for how to do this are on the page.
While that downloads backup all important information stored on your SD card as there is a small chance of data loss to your SD cards FAT32 partition.
Once you're gone, boot off the USB drive or the CD/DVD and make sure that your SD card is mounted to your computer via your phone then run the gparted app (Not entirely sure where it is since I have a Linux install and I just used that to make an ext partition).
Once in the utility, select your SD card in the drop down menu in the top right of the window.
Right click your FAT32 partition and select unmount.
Right click on your SD cards FAT32 partition and select resize.
Shrink your partition leaving the appropriate size (I recommend at least 750 MB, but then again I use a 16GB sd card) after your FAT partition.
Hit the check mark at the top of the window to apply the changes.
Once that's done, right click the grey space at the end of the drive and select format to > Ext4
Hit the check mark again to apply the changes.
Optionally, since you've backed up your FAT32 partition, you can right click > format to > Fat32 to remove all the gunk on it created by Android through general use. I find whenever I'm playing with partitions it's nice to make sure that everything's all nice and smooth by formatting everything that I can that won't cause severe data loss.
Head back into windows and flash your ROM
I don't really have any opinions on HTC sense since my phone has a weird glitch with every single HTC sense ROM I've tried. I've even flashed an RUU then reflashed a sense ROM and the glitch persisted. I am unable to use the stock web browser or any browser based off it (Basically anything but Firefox and Opera) on 3g. I have no idea why this is happening and I've asked multiple devs about it and they have no idea what's wrong. Bottomline, I like HTC sense, but am unable to use it, thus MIUI has become my ROM of choice and I'm now loyal to it and wouldn't go back to sense even if it worked fine.

Here's where im at...
Installed D2Ext version and really liking it, originally tried A2SD version, but think the D2Ext seems a bit more fluid, could be my imagination though.
1 question, which MIUI updater should i be using, to notify, download and update with?
I saw a link on the MIUI XJ page, and downloaded one (v7), but not sure it was the right one. it notifies of update, downloads, then when i click apply, it reboots into recovery, and shows exclamation mark.
then when i try to apply update manually, i get a signature verification error.
not a major, but would really like to correct the updating system if possible..
all suggestions welcome
According to MIUI thread, method b (system update) is the method for you:
METHOD B: UPDATING YOUR ROM
THIS ONE IS FULL SUPPORT FOR D2EXT X-PART USERS:
PARTIAL FOR A2SD and D2W, CAN'T FLASH if KERNEL CHANGE in X-PART
MIUI System Update (Introduced in MIUI XJ 1.5.6)
Updates can be applied after download too when it failed in a2sd, d2w,
If you got can't mount devblock blah blah blah, just browse and flash the zip from sdcard (downloaded_rom)

Is this the updater that's built into the rom? if so, i'm guessing i don't need to addon anything, and just use the built in updater?

would it be recommended to reload the rom, or can i safely leave it there?

You can leave it there. The update with the cm updater is just another method and it won't disturb.

I have a second question...
I have a 16gb Class 6 SD Card, with 1gb EXT4 Partition after Fat32 Partition.
I've been doing some reading and searching and seen some references to a Linux-Swap partition (100mb) after the EXT4 Partition .
I'm using MIUI XJ D2Ext, and seems to be working perfectly (as far as i can tell).
1: Can anyone clarify, or recommend correct partitioning for my card as mentioned above for the MIUI XJ D2EXT Rom?
2: Is the EXT partition better as EXT4 or is EXT3 better?
thanks heaps to all that can help with suggestions
Hello i am an old user of this superb forum, but now i must write my first problem, here we go:
I got a problem about free space when i use CM7 r2 hboot.
as we know we should have this configuration:
/system=145 MB
/cache=5MB
/data=287MB
So i changed my hboot by two methods (because i got problem so i tried to do it again with other method):
- first was via FastbootCommander v 1.51
- second via recovery FLASH HBOOT IMAGE etc.
after changing hboot i did full wipe, then partition align, then i install the rom (rom link here: http://www.cooldevs.com/archives/394).
When i got new installed rom and i check the free space, i got this results:
135 free and 252 used space.
What was wrong?
Here is a prtsc how look like partitions on my sd-card (Disk3 ~16GB):

i use Cool_alignment.zip, i shouldn't? well it is a new point of view... let me check
ps. it is good option to change hboot via recovery? i heard opinion the best way is via command line, but it works fine, also via recovery hmmm
UPDATE:
I changed hboot with recovery, after flash without alignment my desire stuck on the splashscreen... any sollution?
UDATE2:
Now rom works, but still have 135MB free and 151 used... strange... (i get jboot cm7 r2, then wipe all data, then flash the rom without alignment and still same)

Surely that is working then? The stock Desire only has about 137Mb free with nothing installed, yours is reporting 286Mb in total if I am not mistaken (add the two figures together).

Nooooo you really shouldn't. Gparted does everything you need, simply by pressing apply. Including alignment. That zip is for people who use cwm or ROM manger which uses SDparted with no alignment.
Even if everything works, I'd recommend deleting and retreating the partition in Gparted to undo the zip

Bad news, i tried few times with other card and still don't know where is the problem i also check Data++ hboot, and after fresh and new instalation i got 252MB for Data but half of them are used (151MB used and 102 FREE it is little impossible on the fresh and new installation) (why?)
Any other suggestions? ideas? maybe this rom is little bugged? or i should format my SD card?
if i format again my SD card, what size i should set?
For FAT32 and for EXT4? (i got 16GB, 10class card) maybe my EXT4 partition is too big? about 1,51GB?
Best regards.
You can't see ext4 partition under normal system (system/application/manage apps) due to your sdcard is not mounted as /data. Your apps you installed are on sdext/app symlinked back to data/app you need to use 3rd party app to see free space on sdext... For more info look for a2sd+ and data+ script and see the difference
I recommend to use amarullz script, which is mounting sdext to as /data and real data (data partition on the phone) is used for sys app dalvik, u will be able to see your free space on ext 4 in the manage apps
Size of ext4 must be up to 2 gb for stability reason, hope this helps

When i reparted (this word is correct?) my SD-card again, and set EXT4 size lower, to 1GB size, this ROM (CoolSense 3D) with CM7r2 hboot work great.
Results, don't be greedy and use less space for APPSors!!!!
Best regards.
My config is:
SD-card (16GB class 10 - AData)
Fat32 - 14,5GB (created as Primary)
Ext4 - 1GB (created as Primary)

Hey peeps.
I've run into a problem recently. I don't have enough storlage space left for installing apps from the market.
I'm using an ICS Rom by sandvold.com. I have partioned 2 gigabytes of my 32 gigs SD card to be used for a2sd and so far only 500 mb is in use. Both my dalvik cache and app data are on the sd card.
During the installation of a2sd in my Rom I chose to use the stock version.
Does anyone know a possible solution to my problem?

If you want to know where all your free space has gone, try Diskusage app, and check your data partition...
Probably the cache of some of your apps has grown too much...

I partition my sd card ext2/ext3 (ext4 doesn't work)
Installed link 2 sd (when you first launch you will be prompted what partition you have ext2/ext3/ext4)
Restart the phone and you are done.
After linking the apps( i mean i linked in first restart 40+) the phone will boot slowly but after that it will be faster.
Hope helps you
I thank you much for the reply, but this is already what I've done and I'm out of space again, with my SD partitioned. I partitioned 2 GB of storage on my SD and it isn't using it all as you see on the titanium backup screenshot. I have no clue on how to fix it..

I checked with the Diskusage app and found that approximately 600 MB was allocated for cache and data. Why isn't all of my 2 GB of sd-ext added to this "list"? Any suggestions would be apreciated.
Your output clearly shows A2SD is not working. Which means, Apps and Dalvik-Cache are not moved to SD-EXT.
So please run
Code:
a2sd install
After successfull reboot (script will you asking to do so after answering the question which data should be moved), please the output of this command again
Code:
ls -l /data
I ran the "a2sd install" command, moved dalvik and moved data by writing "y" to the questions.. After that I performed a reboot.
I then ran the command you wrote: ls -l /data.
I could be worth mentioning that during the installation of my ICS rom I choose to use the stock a2sd. I used to have a GB rom on my Desire some time ago. Back then I was using some other script called Darktremor and that worked. I have the opportunity to try another a2sd script during the installation of my rom. Any suggestions?
Ok this is what i suggest:
Remove the sim and memory card
If you have an card reader (backup your fat 32 partition and format it ;after that format ex2/ext3 partition)
Restore backup on the fat32 partition
Now do the phone a factory reset
Wait till it boots
Restart it
Put back the sd card and sim in the phone
Go to market and install link 2 sd and do the method i write in last post.
If this dosn't work flash data++ hboot from alpharev site
A2SD is still not working. How and with witch program did you partition your SD card?
MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Ok now i know what you are talking about:whatever you install it gives you inssuficient memory.I had the same prob after installing some app from market.I just installed it and it worked good then.
I used the recoverymode (Revolutionary) to partition my SD card, but it was an entirely new SD card at the time I installed it in my phone for about 1 month ago. I hadn't formatted it before I started using it.
I'm gonna try your method mansamihai, and get it done today hopefully. Not being able to install/update apps is driving me crazy.

do not use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition for creating your ext partition.
while it may work for some, in lots of cases it can cause more problems.
backup your sd card to computer first, then try partitioning from scratch again.
gparted is recommended above anything else, or use 4ext recovery.
I used the partition function in the revolutionary recovery mode to partition my SD. I've made it to the point where I should choose which file system my SD cards partition is in the Link2SD app and I have no clue which one to choose? Any chance for a bit of help here?
I tried the to do it all over again, sadly without any change in results..
It is still not working..
Any suggestions on what to do now?
Thanks in advance!
i'm on oxygen 2.3.2 since it was released now i'm running low on space (16mb free). i installed darktremor's app2sd but moving data and app to ext will not solve the problem because i gain only 50-60mb
i tryed the amarullz 1.0rc1 script and after reboot i have 1gb free space.. cool! but i lost settings/sms/personal data/ ecc...
so i check in real data folder and my data still here but the script use sd.ext/data
the question is:
if i move real data folter to sd-ext/data and reboot mi personal file came back? i havo to fix anithing? move from phone whit root explorer or from recovery? or simply don't work?
i' don't want to loose my data i have 10k+ sms from girlfiend i never want to lost but this scrip is what im searching for...
Which hboot are you on? You could get a lot more space simply by s-off and changing hboot to oxygenR2 (assuming your system size < 100MB)
That may solve your space issues straight away without worrying about any extra scripts.
Nandroid backup 1st to save all data. You can backup your sms separately with an app (search for one there are many) just to be sure.
Then s-off (search for guide, revolutionary is easiest), change hboot and restore nandroid.

i already done s-off and nandroid backup, i use sms backup restore to save sms but he doesen't save mms. also i have some data related to my apps/ note / my money track and other stuff that i can't loose
canging hboot let me gain 70-80 mb because i move a lot of app of my interest into system (like go laucher or cerberus)
slowly the data partition run low of space, gain 80mb will solve the problem only for 3-4 months

well now you have a nandroid backup all is safe anyway.
first thing you could try, because i also move apps into system too. when they get updated, don't know why but for some reason they get installed to data partition (with old version still on system). i use an app like SystemCleanup to move them back to system, thus freeing up space on data
i still don't know what hboot you have and what your current system size is. any free system space is effectively wasted partition which could be used for data so i still recommend switching hboot.
darktremor apps to sd should work, but if you still need more space you can also flash another zip from here to move dalvik cache to sd (just make sure your sd-ext partition is big enough (1.5GB-2GB max is normally enough)
keep app data on nand (/data) for performance.
so for instance, if you use oxygenR2 hboot with this setup, you will have 333MB space for just app data, which should be plenty, with all user apps+dalvik cache on sd-ext
lastly, whatever setup you have, use something like Diskusage app to check all partitions, very easy to see what takes up most space.
stock hboot
52mb free on system after moving all apps (some app can't be moved in system like quickpic i don0t know why)
i tryed to move dalvik to sd it's free about 40mb but some apps crash and other don't let istall
sorry double post

the 52MB free on system is still wasted memory. your ultimate goal is more data space, so changing hboot is still the best way.
keep critical apps like launcher / sms on system. I do the same with go launcher and go sms etc, no idea either why quickpic doesn't work on system.
try this:
- move the rest of your own system apps to sd-ext.
- (optional) delete other non-critical apps/ringtones/languages to reduce system size further
- check system size (quick system info pro)
- nandroid backup
- change to appropriate hboot (try to get down to oxygen R1 (90MB) or R2 (100MB) if you want maximum space. i find cm7r2 (145MB system, 287MB data enough).
- restore
you may lose a little performance with some apps on sd-ext instead of system, but i have class 4 card, ext4 partition seems fine to me. if your ultimate goal is more space then this is a tradeoff.

think you needed to wipe dalvik in recovery, flash the zip and then reboot. the dalvik then rebuilds on sd-ext (takes a long time)
what size is your partition, must be big enough for apps+dalvik.
if apps crash, try backup with titanium, uninstall, then restore.
even though you have a nandroid there must be apps that save sms and mms. titanium backup or similar is all you need for backing up and restoring all other apps + data.
thanks i will try

this is my phone with all necessary app in system partition (like go laucher, go sms, cerberus, ecc)
i have only quickpic, mx video player, voice search, teamspeak3 installed on data alla apps are moved to sd with default gb stile
i need hboot with system size of 200mb and i gain 50mb for data
so i don't try this way because i can't find a suitable hboot for me
now a question run in my mind: with only 4 app on data partition why that folder use 131mb? (sms/mms folder take up only 4mb) what is using all this space?
Look mate, my recommendation:
-do a backup of all your apps, no matter which method
-flash oxygen hboot from alpharev
-do a full wipe and flash oxygen rom from the start
-flash a2sdx by amarulz without rebooting
-after first boot and initial setup don't restore anything just reboot once again
-restore all your apps
I know it's quite a job but it's the only method that will give you all you need (big internal memory and a solid rock system) plus you won't need to move apps on system partition cause you will have enough big internal storage.

you can try above as well,
i think i only suggested my way, as it doesnt involve full wipe.
whatever solution you end up doing, there is definitely a way around your space issue, currently you're not using your space very efficiently:
- you say 'necessary' apps, they don't need to be on system partition. you've moved an extra 100MB which could be valuable data space...
- currently only 33MB of your sd-ext partition is being used out of 1GB! might as well fill it with necessary apps, which is the whole point of the partition in the first place. the darktremor script should move them to sd-ext automatically i.e. 'move to phone', not 'move to sd', so not sure it's working very well.
your data partition is probably filled with app data and dalvik cache, and other app caches. if you can install Diskusage like i said earlier, you can see exactly what is taking up the space...
so we've narrowed down two potential solutions:
- oxygen hboot with apps+dalvik on sd-ext
- oxygen hboot with amarullz (not used this myself, but should work)
the choice is yours, what's holding you back is stock hboot. 147MB is just not enough, blame HTC

Right, a2sdx performance depends on sd card class, lower then class 6 could give trouble. But darktremor a2sd works fine with class 4.

So I feel satisfied with Mimicry 1.5. So it is one more step for maximum performance: new file system.
I was searching for tut but there's too many results and I can't find anything, so I will post my dump questions here:
What is ext4? Is whole new FS on internal memory or extra partition on sdcard or both?
Will I need to reinstall rom?
Is ext4 console required or cwm will work too?
Can I restore nandroid backup over ext4?
Can i create ext4 partition on sdcard without reinstalling rom?

Mimicry supports ext4 and I highly recommend using it. The easiest way to check and see what file system you are using across the different partitions of your phone is with 4ext recovery. I have a guide to switch to 4ext recovery here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33058659
It's like the 4th post or so, you can do it other ways as well but it just makes sense having the better recovery anyway. You are getting a few things jumbled together, 4ext is a recovery. Ext4 is a files system used in linux that is faster than ext3 but has potential issues with the extra journaling. Just do a little googling to find more info.
You can partition your sdcard to include a ext partition, usually used to store apps, it can be better for some and can be slower for others depending on many things such as how many apps you have, speed of sdcard, etc. Also som roms do not support an ext partition on your sdcard natively so that is something to keep in mind.
Do a little reaserch and decide what's best for you. But definetly get the 4ext recovery and I highly suggest changing all partitions on your phone to ext4

Okay. But after that how to format new file system both on sdcard and internal memory? Will titanium backup restore data of some backuped apps due to different location of ext4 partition on sdcard and so on. I mean i will give fresh start to my dz on sdcard too. But there's about 15 apps with important data that i need to restore easily after that.
umm, so if you choose to replace clockwork with 4ext recovery there is an option there to format all partitions (except sdcard) also under info, it will tell you current partitions in case you dont know
now there is an option to format sdcard in there as well (i recommend putting all contents of sd on computer first as a backup) choose swap partition size (probably just choose 0 but if you want swap look more into this) choose ext partition size (usually makes sense to have it larger than internal memory so in your case more than 1gb) dont do a second ext partition (dont know of a rom that supports it) remainder fat32
let it run and then transfer contents from pc back to card (this will transfer back onto fat32 partition)
any file need then is still accessible through both computer and phone (except windows cant read ext partitions)
in titanium backup you can choose where to restore apps too, and yes it recognizes apps on ext partitions
Finally I have time and format everything to start fresh&clean install from scratch.
I've taked screenshot of recovery

So I've noticed that phone keep writes in data, while sd-ext stays untouched. So how can I force install in sd-ext instead of internal memory? I've google it before start installing apps and found that I need to use terminal emulator for typing these cmds:
Su
A2sd install
But second one returns not found, so I decided that may be is automated process, but it isn't as became clear.
What should I do?
