I'm thinking of trying a MIUI rom, on my HTC Desire (Bravo A8181)
Currently i have alpharev Data++ hboot (s-off etc..)
my questions are:
1 there are 3 variations of MIUI available, which one would i need?
A2SD/A2SD+, D2W, D2EXT -PART
2 i have read that partitioning SDcard is required, is this still the case with Data++ hboot?
I've done literally days of searching online for the answers, but the many variations of details and ports are confusing me.
any advice would be awesome
Here's a quick summary of the three types of MIUI XJ I did in a reddit post.
D2EXT is a fairly fast, fairly stable script that will move the entirety of your androids /data partition to an ext2, ext3, or ext4 partition on your sd card (providing it's after your FAT32 partition).
D2W (data2whatever) is a bit less stable than D2EXT since it's much newer than D2EXT, however, it supports a larger range of partition formats, namely, reiserFS which is specifically made to increase performance and longevity of flash memory. It also moves your entire /data partition to your secondary sd card partition.
The version of A2SD which ships with MIUI XJ is a modified Darktremor A2SD script which, by default only moves /data/app and /data/app-private to an SD-ext partition. It leaves the rest of the /data partition untouched because in theory, your phones internal NAND should be faster than your SD card, however, if you have an SD card that is class4 or faster, the presumed speed decrease will be minimal, if at all. This script does support the moving of the dalvik-cache (Which, next to the actual apks themselves, takes up the most space) to the sd-ext as well.
The reason for having these is because the HTC Desire has a very small data partition and it often fills up very quickly. For MIUI XJ I usually go for the D2EXT because it's tried and true, very stable, and allows me to have up to 2GB of apks/cache data. Whereas the A2SD script still runs out of memory fairly quickly, and D2W is less (Though almost innoticably) stable.

With the data++ partition table, I'd recommend going A2SD/A2SD+ and partitioning your SD card with either ROM manager, or, if you'd like I can link you to a tutorial I wrote up. If you still find yourself running out of space, then maybe you should consider running D2EXT.

Thanks for the info, very informative, clears a lot of questions that i had
so if i understand correctly, i could try the A2SD/A2SD+ version on my current data++ partition table, as long as i have partitioned my sd card with either ext/2/3/4 ?
if i could get the link to the tutorial, that would be awesome thanks
What are your thoughts on miui in comparison to the stock htc sense?
thanks
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php Download this, and burn it to a CD/DVD or put it on a USB drive, the instructions for how to do this are on the page.
While that downloads backup all important information stored on your SD card as there is a small chance of data loss to your SD cards FAT32 partition.
Once you're gone, boot off the USB drive or the CD/DVD and make sure that your SD card is mounted to your computer via your phone then run the gparted app (Not entirely sure where it is since I have a Linux install and I just used that to make an ext partition).
Once in the utility, select your SD card in the drop down menu in the top right of the window.
Right click your FAT32 partition and select unmount.
Right click on your SD cards FAT32 partition and select resize.
Shrink your partition leaving the appropriate size (I recommend at least 750 MB, but then again I use a 16GB sd card) after your FAT partition.
Hit the check mark at the top of the window to apply the changes.
Once that's done, right click the grey space at the end of the drive and select format to > Ext4
Hit the check mark again to apply the changes.
Optionally, since you've backed up your FAT32 partition, you can right click > format to > Fat32 to remove all the gunk on it created by Android through general use. I find whenever I'm playing with partitions it's nice to make sure that everything's all nice and smooth by formatting everything that I can that won't cause severe data loss.
Head back into windows and flash your ROM
I don't really have any opinions on HTC sense since my phone has a weird glitch with every single HTC sense ROM I've tried. I've even flashed an RUU then reflashed a sense ROM and the glitch persisted. I am unable to use the stock web browser or any browser based off it (Basically anything but Firefox and Opera) on 3g. I have no idea why this is happening and I've asked multiple devs about it and they have no idea what's wrong. Bottomline, I like HTC sense, but am unable to use it, thus MIUI has become my ROM of choice and I'm now loyal to it and wouldn't go back to sense even if it worked fine.

Here's where im at...
Installed D2Ext version and really liking it, originally tried A2SD version, but think the D2Ext seems a bit more fluid, could be my imagination though.
1 question, which MIUI updater should i be using, to notify, download and update with?
I saw a link on the MIUI XJ page, and downloaded one (v7), but not sure it was the right one. it notifies of update, downloads, then when i click apply, it reboots into recovery, and shows exclamation mark.
then when i try to apply update manually, i get a signature verification error.
not a major, but would really like to correct the updating system if possible..
all suggestions welcome
According to MIUI thread, method b (system update) is the method for you:
METHOD B: UPDATING YOUR ROM
THIS ONE IS FULL SUPPORT FOR D2EXT X-PART USERS:
PARTIAL FOR A2SD and D2W, CAN'T FLASH if KERNEL CHANGE in X-PART
MIUI System Update (Introduced in MIUI XJ 1.5.6)
Updates can be applied after download too when it failed in a2sd, d2w,
If you got can't mount devblock blah blah blah, just browse and flash the zip from sdcard (downloaded_rom)

Is this the updater that's built into the rom? if so, i'm guessing i don't need to addon anything, and just use the built in updater?

Before i was aware of this, i added MIUI_XJ_CMUpdater_Mod_for_OTA_V7_Signed.
would it be recommended to reload the rom, or can i safely leave it there?

You can leave it there. The update with the cm updater is just another method and it won't disturb.

I have a second question...
I have a 16gb Class 6 SD Card, with 1gb EXT4 Partition after Fat32 Partition.
I've been doing some reading and searching and seen some references to a Linux-Swap partition (100mb) after the EXT4 Partition .
I'm using MIUI XJ D2Ext, and seems to be working perfectly (as far as i can tell).
1: Can anyone clarify, or recommend correct partitioning for my card as mentioned above for the MIUI XJ D2EXT Rom?
2: Is the EXT partition better as EXT4 or is EXT3 better?
thanks heaps to all that can help with suggestions

Dear All,
I am new to rooting, Custom ROMs etc ....
I have been reading for a couple of days several tutorials on how to root, install custom ROMs on my HTC Desire, so far I reached 80% of my goal, searching the internet and this forum I found ALOT of threads and tutorials and I wasn't totally sure which one to follow, but eventually I decided to have the InsertCoin ROM on my Stock Desire, so those are the following steps I did:
1- Rooted my Desire successfully using unrevoked.
2- Due to hardware limitation as you know the HTC Desire internal memory is so small, I have seen that I can partition my memory card in a way that the new ROM will be installed on the SD card and not the internal memory and I can benefit from this by having more space for apps, so I partitioned my 4GB SD into 3 partitions (According to the Tutorial): 2.86GB (Fat32), 1GB (EXT2), 32 MB (SWAP). Now this same tutorial suggested to convert the 1GB partition from EXT2 to EXT3 then to EXT4 (Optional) however it failed to convert, everytime I write the command I got an error like (image 1995 something, I can get the exact name if needed) so I continued my quest with the 1GB partition being EXT2.
3- Now I flashed my phone using the CM7 r2 HBOOT from alpharev.nl successfullly.
4- Then went to download InsertCoin there was 2 options InsertCoin Sense 2.1 A2SD+ 1.1.3 and InsertCoin Sense 2.1 CM7 1.1.3, I got the second one since I used the CM7 r2 HBOOT ... and installed this custom ROM on my phone and booted successfully.
Everything went fine, the new OS is Gorgeous and full of features except one thing, the 1 GB partition that I thought it was dedicated for the new ROM was untouched the new ROM was installed on the phone internal memory and after the installation I went to the phone info and found out that I have 32 MB of internal memory left, and this of course sucks I havent installed anything yet, so excuse me guys probably someone asked this before but I am too confused to find the correct answer ? what did I do wrong ? can I fix it from here or I must install the InsertCoin Sense 2.1 A2SD+ 1.1.3 ? Maybe there is something wrong in the way I am interpreting this could you please guide me?
My Goal: To have InsertCoin installed on the 1GB partition and to see like I have 700-800 MB left on my internal memory like some screen shots posted in this forum.
Best Regards
First, congratulations on rooting your phone. Trust me, it's the best thing you could have done to it.
Second, which tutorial did you use? The most tried and tested one on xda is this one... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
In reality the best way to partition your sd card is with only 2 partitions. The first (primary) partition should always be fat32, and the second should be either ext3 or ext4. Follow the guide I gave you to partition using GParted. It's one of the best ways to partition your sd card. Not too sure about the swap partition, I've never used one on any of the rom's I've used.
CM7r2 is possibly the best hboot to have as it's so widely used. Well done for flashing it succesfully.
The InsertCoin rom you downloaded would have been the right one for you. The a2sd+ one is for stock hboot.
As for your final internal memory space it sounds a little low. The rom itself will never be installed on your sd card, it will always stay on your internal memory. But from what you've said it sounds like you partitioned your memory card incorrectly.
More information can be found here...
http://docs.insertcoin-roms.org/2.4/en-US/installation/
and...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17482966&highlight=a2sd#post17482966 (read this page and the couple after it)
Always try to read as much on the specific rom thread that you can as there's loads of useful info on them.
If I was you I'd repartition my sd card again and reinstall the rom.
Hope it helps.
Thank you very much zedmarcus for your fast and detailed reply, the tutorial above is the best one I have seen so far, its sad that I did not follow it in the first place, I still have some things to ask, concerning the steps in the Tutorial:
Step One: Silly me I didnt do it.
Step Two: Done correctly (Similar to the way shown in this Tut).
Step Three: Done correctly (Similar to the way shown in this Tut).
Step Four: now I read about S-OFF somewhere but I didnt give it attention, but the thing I have done is I have downloaded CM7 r2, renamed it to PB99IMG.zip put it on my SD card, and booted in Recovery Mod (ClockWork) and chose "Install zip from sd card" and guided it to PB99IMG.zip. Can we consider this as an alternative way of what the Tutorial author did using the ISO way ? or am I talking total Gibberish ?
Step Five: I will totally follow this one and partition my SD card using Gparted live CD, the way I did using adb shell was a total mess.
Step Six: Done it correctly.
Step Seven: Done it correctly following this official InsertCoin docs.
Anyway I think I will read the tutorial again and carefully, before I start over.
No problem. XDA is all about learning and sharing
1) No problem really with downloading your RUU first. You can always find out which one you need and download it later if you ever have to. Personally my phone is out of warranty (so it'll never go back to HTC for a fix), and you can find answers to pretty much any problems on here.
4) Yes thats another way to s-off - I think . Easiest way to check if you are s-off (and check your hboot) is to turn off your phone, then press and hold volume down and press the power button to turn it on. It'll then turn on to a white screen, and at the top in pink it should say "AlphaRev CM7 r2" (your current hboot). Just below that it'll say whether you're s-on or s-off. Then just use the volume buttons up and down to go to reboot, or recovery if you're flashing a new rom/kernel/add-on (power button makes the selection).
5) There's no problem with partitioning your sd card again. I've done mine a couple of times.
Only other advice I can give is to make sure once you've got your new rom up and running is to make a nand backup. You'll need it if your phone ever messes up and you wanna go back to an earlier backup (think of it like a backup on your pc where you can go back to a particular date before it was messed up). Step six in the guide I gave you shows you how to do it.
Enjoy your "new" phone
Quick question, I found out that my phone is still S-ON, and in fact I did not HBOOT reflash it correctly, I jumped this step and installed teh CM7 r2 patch (Which I suppose went successfully), now my question, can I HBOOT reflash my phone like step 4 in the above tutorial, then apply CM7 r2 again ? will it brick my phone or anything ?
Ok today was tuff day, some things cleared up and other things are still ambiguous, my phone is actually S-ON I tried the video in the tutorial, but at some point it failed but my phone is still OK and still S-ON, however I managed to partition my SD card correctly this time, and reinstalled InsertCoin but still straightly after the installation I had 32 MB of internal memory left, now here is the weird part for me can someone explain what is the role of the 1GB EXT4 partition that I made and which is required for the InsertCoin ? I thought after the installation I would see a huge internal memory like the one I saw in this forum in a screenshot in the Supernova Rom, or is it different with InserCoin ?
In addition after the ROM installation, I took my SD card, plugged it in a memory card ready and started Gparted just to see the usage and I was surprised that out of the 1 GB EXT4 partition there was 363 MB used so in fact it was "touched" during the installation, can someone clear this thing up for me please ?

Droidzone's Supernova ROM uses data2sd which means you can install any amount of app storage room on your sd card as you want. InsertCoin is different to this in that it doesn't use data2sd.
If you really want a lot of room for app storage Supernova is the way to go.
If you s-off then change your hboot, you will need to re-flash. It's worth it though.
To s-off, go to alpharev.nl, download alpharev 1.8 hboot reflash utility, burn it onto a cd, put it into your pc and boot to it, then follow the instructions on the screen. It should only take about 5 minutes, but it gives you access to everything.
Once you're s-off, download fastboot commander, bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img also from alpharev.nl, and recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-bravo.img. Start up your phone into fastboot (hold down volume- and power, then select fastboot), plug it in, and start up fastboot commander. In the main text box, it should show that your phone is connected via fastboot. If it is, then select Hboot/spl and select the bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img file, and click Flash SPL. Do the same for Recovery, with recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5.bravo.img.
Enjoy

Thanks, I think I will give Supernova a try, even though I liked InsertCoin, it looks like the Desire HD inside and have Internet Pass-Through (Which is very useful to me) While Supernova, according to the pics looks like a stock Desire with big internal memory , but I was wondering, InsertCoin is made for HTC Desire and seems very popular with over 200 000 Downloads, those who are using it, what are they doing about the memory thing ? I would like to know if you have an answer they dont install applications ? or choose applications that are movable to SD ?
@bbbbqq thanks but you said alot of things I am not sure if I can do it
ah, ok, I think I see your problem now (I've re-read all that you've said in your posts)...
If you are still s-on then you will still have the stock hboot instead of CM7r2. If this is right then you don't want to install the version of InsertCoin you have already, you will want the a2sd+ version.
Did you turn off then turn on with volume down and the start button? If you did and at the top in pink it didn't say "Alpharev CM7 r2" then you are still on stock hboot.
The version of InsertCoin you downloaded is for CM7r2.
Try the s-off procedure again to s-off and then flash CM7r2 using "Android Flasher" - found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638&highlight=android+flasher
Then you can try reinstalling the rom you've downloaded.
Or...
Download the InsertCoin Sense 2.1 A2SD+ 1.1.3 version from here http://insertcoin-roms.org/htc-desire/download
Put it on your sd card, reboot into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, advanced/wipe dalvik cache, back, install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, then select the new InsertCoin a2sd+ 1.1.3 version you just downloaded.
Flash 1.1.3 first and see how it goes, then afterwards if it's working ok for you, you can then download the "InsertCoin Sense 2.1 A2SD+ 1.1.4" from the same page and flash it on top of 1.1.3 (but don't do all of the wipes, just do the wipe dalvik cache one).
(1.1.4 is only an update, so you can't do it unless you do 1.1.3 first)
Ok, hope it helps. Let me know how it goes.
Dont give up ! Insertcoin is worth trying
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
zedmarcus, you are my savior thank you again, your post made it clear finally, my phone is still S-ON and I dont have the Alpharev CM7 HBOOT, I downloaded the A2SD+ edition of insertCoin and used it, that's exactly what I want Gingerbread 2.3.3, Desire HD look, smooth, Internet Pass-through, Internal memory is almost all free (130MB out of 148MB) all newly installed application are being installed on the A2SD storage (the 1 GB EXT4 partition), the phone is running great as if I purchased a new device and I am sure there is even more to explore
============================================================
Now on a side note, for the future, if I would like to install ROMs that CM7 r2 HBOOT, I must S-OFF my phone, however the process of S-OFFing is failing at the end, following the video from the TUT you gave me in your first post, I am following the guy step by step at the end his S-OFF succeed and mines fail, have a look on this:

After the "waiting for flashing to complete" there should be another message showing that the flash was successful, that's the thing preventing me from S-OFFing my phone I guess, if you or anyone have an answer for this please let me know, otherwise its ok I am happy with my InsertCoin A2SD+
If this helps, probably this is happening because previously I did flash the CM7 r2 HBOOT file that I downloaded from alpharev.com the zip file and named it to PB99IMG.zip and did "install zip from sd card" before even using the alpharev iso flash utility, and later I knew that the CM7 r2 PB99IMG.zip file is only a PATCH that should be applied after the flash.

No problem. Glad you are happy with InsertCoin and your "new" phone
As for your s-off... Not really sure why it's not working for you. But...
What is your hboot version number? Find it by turning off and turning on with the volume down/power. Second line down under Alpharev (in pink) it says...
Let me know
That's what I got:
Code:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
If I am not mistaken, that's the stock hboot right ?
You are right.
Ok... I'm not sure (and someone will probably correct me) but I'm sure I read somewhere that you have to have a stock rom to be able to s-off...
So in your case what you could do if you wanted s-off that badly, download your ruu and flash which will put you back where you were when you first began, and then go through the whole process again using the guide I gave you, doing it all in the correct order.
In reality, if you are happy with your phone now you could just stick with stock hboot for now, keep reading and learning, and then at a later date do it all again, s-offing at the right point.
Enjoy.
You do not need stock rom to go S-OFF. With revolutionary, it depends on the hboot. With alpharev, there sometimes were problems with gingerbread custom roms.
Cheers MatDrOiD...
I wasn't sure about this but I read it in another thread in Q&A.
Rather than recreate the wheel...
Here is the developer's thread on Link2SD
Read it thoroughly!!!
Here are some links on Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4 file systems and why Ext 4 is preferable over Ext2 if you can do it with your ROM's kernel.
Ext2
Ext3
Ext4
Here's a debate over which to use. You be the judge and go with what makes sense for you.
What I'm going to take you through is creating the second partition on your SD card to be able to use it. We are going to use Minitool Partition Wizard Pro Home Edition (Freeware) to do this on a Windows machine.
There are other ways to do this including Linux, from recovery, etc, but this is a free and simple method that DOES NOT LOSE YOUR EXISTING SD CARD DATA!!!
First things first!
Repeat after me...
1/ I have a stock kernel in my ROM. My ROM only supports FAT32 and Ext2 for the second partition and I will not format it Ext4 and then come asking why it's not mounting correctly! I will format it Ext2 for best performance.
2/ I am not S-OFF or HTCDev unlocked AND rooted. I will NOT come asking if this will work or WHY it's not working at all!
3/ I WILL NOT TRY MOUNTING MY PHONE AS A HARD DRIVE TO DO THIS. I WIL READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND USE A CARD READER!
So the prerequisites are:
1/ HTC Dev Unlocked OR S-OFF
2/ Permanently rooted
3/ A windows machine with Minitool Partition Wizard Pro Home Edition (Freeware) Installed or Hirens Boot CD which has a bootable windows version with PWPH installed on it.
4/ An SD card appropriate for the job. The faster the better! For 16 and 32 GB I really do recommend splurging on the Class 10...
Steps:
1/ Boot up your Hirens or Windows machine
2/ Make sure that Show Hidden Files and Folders is ON so you can see some of the hidden folders present on an android system's SD card
3/ Insert your Micro SD card into a reader and attach it to the computer
4/ Make a folder on your computer and back up your entire SD card's main partition to it including hidden files and folders JUST TO BE SAFE. (Remember if you do this right you won't have to lose your card's contents, unlike the recovery method.
5/ Install Partition Wizard Pro Home Edition or check that its on your Hiren's bootable windows cd
6/ Run Partition Wizard Home Edition.
7/ Look for your SD card along the bottom and identify your FAT32 Partition

12/ Right click on it and choose "Create"
13/ When you get the warning about the partition not being able to be used in Windows click "Yes" to continue
14/ Choose Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4 for partition type based on whether your kernel supports Ext4. If it does choose it! If you don't know choose Ext2 to be safe. I would avoid Ext3 unless you have to. 2 or 4 are preferred
*NOTE!!! You cannot resize an Ext partition after you make it. You can only move it around so choose your size wisely! I find a GB to be plenty and I have 150+ linked apps with 360 MB free on SD card partition 2 but you can have up to 2 GB.
15/ Make sure it is a primary not a logical partition
16/ Name it if you want.
17/ Click "OK" to continue
18/ Click the BIG "Apply" button in the top left of the window
19/ Choose "Yes" to continue from the pop up
20/ Let it do it's work.
Congratulations! Step 1 Complete!
Now to step 2:
1/ Eject and place your SD card back into your phone
2/ Boot up your phone
3/ Install Link2SD from the Android Market
4/ Run it
5/ On first run it will ask you the type of partition your second SD card partition is. Choose Ext2 or Ext4 depending on which you made it.
6/ Follow the directions to reboot your phone
Congratulations! Link2SD is now working on your phone!
When you click the menu button in Link2SD and choose "Storage Info" you should see three memory spaces. Internal, SD Card, and SD Card 2nd Part.
At this point I recommend you Menu click and go to Settings and choose "Autolink" to automatically link programs (.APK), dalvik cache files (.DEX) and library files (libs) to your SD Card 2'nd partition when a new program is installed.
Now for some strategy!
You say, "I've got all this external space! Why bother putting any programs on the internal space?"
Well...SPEED MAN! SPEED!
I keep Launchers, Widgets, Background processes like Titanium Backup, etc, on the internal as space allows to allow for speed when booting. The internal memory is faster than your SD card and keeping these programs here helps a lot in speeding up your boot time. This is an option with Link2SD that you DON'T have with Data2SD or Data2Whatever!
You can also keep commonly accessed programs like Tapatalk for example, on this internal fast memory.
You can also mass move by multi selecting, several programs to and from either internal, SD card, or SD card second partition. Ideal for your initial move to your new second partition of your apps pre-installed prior to link2sd.
People wanted instructions for a third swap so see post two for additional steps.
Troubleshooting:
*If you have issues with your primary SD card partition not working right or perhaps you decided to wipe the whole card and create them both/or all three from scratch, remember that this FAT32 partition 1 has to be set ACTIVE and all partitions have to be primary not logical.
*If you cannot mount Ext2 or Ext4 make the second partition FAT32. It will work for all Wildfire S Models and all ROM's. Try the others first as they are preferred for performance and stability.
*If you don't have a card reader it's been reported that you can use your phone in hard drive mode to achieve the same thing, followed by a reboot but I have heard many cases where this causes troubles so I personally don't recommend it but hey. You gotta do what you gotta do.
*Some users are reporting with MarvelC's that they needed to use Ext3 so I have updated the tutorial to reflect this.
*If you don't immediately see a change in internal memory after linking apps relax. It will show up. Sometimes it just is a little delayed.
That's pretty much it for now.

Add On's and FAQ's
Adding in a Linux Swap If Wanted, Supported, and Needed:
Personally I don't see the use for it but hey. Sometimes people want the kitchen sink included as well right?
1/ Increase your unallocated space in the FAT32 resize to around 1550 MB
2/ Right click on the unallocated space and make your Ext2/Ext4 partition of around 1027 MB
3/ Right click on the remaining unallocated space at the end of the drive and choose Linux swap for partition type. Again make sure it's a Primary and not a Logical parition!
Apply.
Have fun...(And click thanks!
How would I know which partition my kernel supports? I'm using alquez's CM7.

so after create ex2 partition setup link2sd and choose ex2 and all ok ?
Used ext4 for alquez' cm7.
Ext4 is fine for CM7. Recommended. Just make sure you choose it when you first run Link2SD.
I am using it without issues.

You don't NEED a linux swap but just add into the equation
1/ Created 1.5 gb of free space
2/ Create second Ext4 partition
3 Create linux swap partition with remainder of space at end of disk.

Suggestion (since this is so noob-friendly otherwise): Instead of mentioninf dalvik, refer to .dex files, synonymous in this context (at least my version of link2sd refers to apk, dex and lib files)

It's what it says it is. Memory swap space.
It swaps out rarely used memory pages to the swap to make room for immediate use of active ones.
If your ROM kernel supports it give it a go with and without and see if you notice performance gains in your everyday use.
Google will provide you with lots of info on what a linux swap partition is and it's benefits/detriments.

Thank you. Great tutorial btw. One question - what would you recommend that I keep on the SD card to avoid boot problems?
Hello i am an old user of this superb forum, but now i must write my first problem, here we go:
I got a problem about free space when i use CM7 r2 hboot.
as we know we should have this configuration:
/system=145 MB
/cache=5MB
/data=287MB
So i changed my hboot by two methods (because i got problem so i tried to do it again with other method):
- first was via FastbootCommander v 1.51
- second via recovery FLASH HBOOT IMAGE etc.
after changing hboot i did full wipe, then partition align, then i install the rom (rom link here: http://www.cooldevs.com/archives/394).
When i got new installed rom and i check the free space, i got this results:
135 free and 252 used space.
What was wrong?
Here is a prtsc how look like partitions on my sd-card (Disk3 ~16GB):

How did you align? Gparted already aligns... further alignment breaks the partitioning

i use Cool_alignment.zip, i shouldn't? well it is a new point of view... let me check
ps. it is good option to change hboot via recovery? i heard opinion the best way is via command line, but it works fine, also via recovery hmmm
UPDATE:
I changed hboot with recovery, after flash without alignment my desire stuck on the splashscreen... any sollution?

Surely that is working then? The stock Desire only has about 137Mb free with nothing installed, yours is reporting 286Mb in total if I am not mistaken (add the two figures together).

Nooooo you really shouldn't. Gparted does everything you need, simply by pressing apply. Including alignment. That zip is for people who use cwm or ROM manger which uses SDparted with no alignment.
Even if everything works, I'd recommend deleting and retreating the partition in Gparted to undo the zip

Bad news, i tried few times with other card and still don't know where is the problem i also check Data++ hboot, and after fresh and new instalation i got 252MB for Data but half of them are used (151MB used and 102 FREE it is little impossible on the fresh and new installation) (why?)
Any other suggestions? ideas? maybe this rom is little bugged? or i should format my SD card?
if i format again my SD card, what size i should set?
For FAT32 and for EXT4? (i got 16GB, 10class card) maybe my EXT4 partition is too big? about 1,51GB?
Best regards.
You can't see ext4 partition under normal system (system/application/manage apps) due to your sdcard is not mounted as /data. Your apps you installed are on sdext/app symlinked back to data/app you need to use 3rd party app to see free space on sdext... For more info look for a2sd+ and data+ script and see the difference
I recommend to use amarullz script, which is mounting sdext to as /data and real data (data partition on the phone) is used for sys app dalvik, u will be able to see your free space on ext 4 in the manage apps
Size of ext4 must be up to 2 gb for stability reason, hope this helps
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Sorry for not fresh update but i got some good news.
When i reparted (this word is correct?) my SD-card again, and set EXT4 size lower, to 1GB size, this ROM (CoolSense 3D) with CM7r2 hboot work great.
Results, don't be greedy and use less space for APPSors!!!!
Best regards.
My config is:
SD-card (16GB class 10 - AData)
Fat32 - 14,5GB (created as Primary)
Ext4 - 1GB (created as Primary)
Good luck, for people which have the same issue
Hello everyone
I finally decided to "unlock" my HTC Desire GSM because I plan to get a new phone in some months time anyway so I thought it's worth the risk.
I managed to s-off the device with Revolutionary, then flash superuser, then flash 4ext recovery to partition my sd-card (ext4 filesystem). Then I flashed the newest radio and installed CM 7.2.0.1 with gapps and finally installed s2e.
I decided to let s2e symlink my app and private app folder. But now they are missing when I start the phone (including s2e itself and google playstore). I goggled it already but haven't found an answer really.
I have to say I use the stock sd-card that came with the desire (it's a class 2).
So my questions are:
Can you experienced users recommend me a ROM that's good concerning speed, battery life, stability or did I choose the perfect ROM already? I don't need all that bloatware that was installed with the stock rom. But I need some space on the memory, so I would need some sort of App2SD.
Also will my class 2 card be fast enough or will it slow down stuff considerably? What filesystem would you recommend for the sd-ext partition? And how can I avoid this "disappearing apps" problem in the future?
And btw can I just install apps with Titanium Backup when changing the ROM or does it mess up stuff?
I hope you people can help me a little with those questions.
This is the first time I'm "unlocking" a phone.
don't worry about 'perfect' rom, because you'll get far too many different answers from different people recommending what's best for them.
try a few roms for yourself to see what you like. CM7 should be solid anyway.
- generally all roms have some sort of app2sd built in with a script already. or you flash a different script, or activate it via terminal commands. reach each rom OP or search each thread for details.
- with CM7, you can use space a little more efficiently by switching to cm7r2 hboot, search for guides.
- your class 2 card may be too slow. i'd recommend keeping app data on internal memory. sd cards are quite cheap nowadays anyway. ext4 should be faster, so stick with it.
- regarding your specific issue with s2e and google play, don't symlink google play, best kept on system partition anyway. don't know why the other apps disappear, they shouldn't. try full wipe, flash cm7r2 hboot as above, flash rom, install s2e and reboot. then restore apps with titanium.
- i've always used titanium backup to backup and restore apps when switching roms, not had a problem. just don't restore system data. if you have problems, try just installing the apps from google play, then restore data only.

Thanks for your answers.
I still have some questions now though
First, is it right that almost all ROMs have some sort of app2sd but CM7 is not one of them? I read that CM7 has no apps2sd of any sort and that's why I installed s2e in the first place.
Second, maybe there is some advanced mode for s2e or sth but I could only click whether I want to symlink my apps, cache, data etc. as a whole like in this picture:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
I couldn't really choose which apps to symlink and which not to. So google play and s2e apps would be symlinked as well since they didn't come with the ROM I guess.
Also when I plan to flash a new ROM is it necessary/better to format/wipe the system partition as well or do I only have to wipe cache and data? Or will it be wiped by the process of flashing the ROM anyways?

CM7 doesn't have app2sd. That's what s2e was made for. The majority of roms have some kind of script. Only the really old ones lack such a thing.
S2e doesn't have an "advanced mode".You can symlink one app at a time with Link2sd. Give it a search on the play store.
Before you flash a rom, just do a factory data reset. That will wipe cache, data and sd-ext. Your system will be auto-wiped when you'll install a new rom.

I actually looked and microsdhc cards seem to be really cheap indeed. I didn't know they were THAT cheap. If I buy one would you recommend to get a class 6 or a class 10 one? I heard that class 10 can make problems? Doesn't really matter concerning price, there seem to be class 6 cards that cost more than class 10 cards and the price difference is that small anyway.
Hey , I just installed CM10.1 and I read the method to activate the a2sd script , I did exactly as i was suppose to , after installing the ROM i just went into terminal , and typed
SU
a2sd install
y
n
y
as i was suppose to , and when i saw the storage , it said 12 mb used , and the rest free , (i have a 2gb ext partition) just 120+ mb i dont remember the exact figure , and so i assumed that it might not show the exact space but it was implying that a2sd was working because the whole OS could not be 12 mb.
so i used super backup to restore all my text messages , call logs , calender etc and then i restored 41 of my old apps , and in the process (31) it started saying that it is out of space , i tried the same script with not luck.
I tried App2sd (from store) and moved some of the apps to make some space.
It took super backup 3 hours , yes 3 hours to restore the text messages , and i dont want to go through all that again (if possible)
Any help would be really appreciated.
NOTE: The ROM i used before was supernova , it had a built in a2sd , so it showed 2 gb when i went into the storage , but it was too slow.
Waiting for a reply , Thanks.

I used it for bigger ROMs but they weren't stable , and what about the "Partition SD Card" in HBOOT.
Could these be the problem?

You probably used Minitool Partition Wizard, which makes faulty partitions. Check the partitioning guide in my signature to correctly partition your sd-card.
m2sd is a script to move apps, data, cache, dalvik cache to sd-ext.
The "Partition SD Card" option is found in "Recovery", not hboot. The hboot is this screen:

I used the "Noob Proof HTC Desire guide" and it showed the gparted method , the same as yours.
How do i check if my phone is "S-Off'd".Because I got this phone with CM7 Running in it...

Go into the bootloader and it will say either s-off or s-on. Look at the picture that andoo posted. It says s off at the top.

Yup its s-offd thanks a bunch for the reply.
i guess i will try the s-off method to partition again , because this just wont work...
I'm having the same problem, having installed CM10.1 and previously having a Supernova ROM installed.
However, that used Data2SD instead of A2SD, and I wonder if this is the problem?
When I try try to activate A2SD by using the command "a2sd install", and rebooting, the phone never recognises the Ext4 partition on my SD card. I wonder if the phone is still expecting to use the Data2SD method (where you used to see the LED turn pink then blue whislt it mounted the SD card partition whilst booting - it no longer does this).
I saw a thread [PRJ] [DATA2SD] Flashable zips for converting any Rom to Data2SD, For N1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864174 - and wondered if this method can be used to get this working. But it talks about installing A2SDKiller specific to your ROM. Where would I find this?
Alternatively, if my phone is looking for Data2SD, is there anyway to stop it doing this, if it is this that is interfering with A2SD working properly?
