[Q] CM10.1 A2SD Problem! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey , I just installed CM10.1 and I read the method to activate the a2sd script , I did exactly as i was suppose to , after installing the ROM i just went into terminal , and typed
SU
a2sd install
y
n
y
as i was suppose to , and when i saw the storage , it said 12 mb used , and the rest free , (i have a 2gb ext partition) just 120+ mb i dont remember the exact figure , and so i assumed that it might not show the exact space but it was implying that a2sd was working because the whole OS could not be 12 mb.
so i used super backup to restore all my text messages , call logs , calender etc and then i restored 41 of my old apps , and in the process (31) it started saying that it is out of space , i tried the same script with not luck.
I tried App2sd (from store) and moved some of the apps to make some space.
It took super backup 3 hours , yes 3 hours to restore the text messages , and i dont want to go through all that again (if possible)
Any help would be really appreciated.
NOTE: The ROM i used before was supernova , it had a built in a2sd , so it showed 2 gb when i went into the storage , but it was too slow.
Waiting for a reply , Thanks.

Thanks for the reply , well i used a partitioning software (the name slips my mind, the one in the noob guide ) , and partitioned it from my computer,
but the reason I could not doubt the partition is because it was working fine in my previous ROM.
Thanks...

And can you tell me about what m2sd is?
I used it for bigger ROMs but they weren't stable , and what about the "Partition SD Card" in HBOOT.
Could these be the problem?

You probably used Minitool Partition Wizard, which makes faulty partitions. Check the partitioning guide in my signature to correctly partition your sd-card.
m2sd is a script to move apps, data, cache, dalvik cache to sd-ext.
The "Partition SD Card" option is found in "Recovery", not hboot. The hboot is this screen:

I actually used the Gparted method , but I dont know why the script is not working.
I used the "Noob Proof HTC Desire guide" and it showed the gparted method , the same as yours.
How do i check if my phone is "S-Off'd".Because I got this phone with CM7 Running in it...

Go into the bootloader and it will say either s-off or s-on. Look at the picture that andoo posted. It says s off at the top.

Yup its s-offd thanks a bunch for the reply.
i guess i will try the s-off method to partition again , because this just wont work...

I'm having the same problem, having installed CM10.1 and previously having a Supernova ROM installed.
However, that used Data2SD instead of A2SD, and I wonder if this is the problem?
When I try try to activate A2SD by using the command "a2sd install", and rebooting, the phone never recognises the Ext4 partition on my SD card. I wonder if the phone is still expecting to use the Data2SD method (where you used to see the LED turn pink then blue whislt it mounted the SD card partition whilst booting - it no longer does this).
I saw a thread [PRJ] [DATA2SD] Flashable zips for converting any Rom to Data2SD, For N1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864174 - and wondered if this method can be used to get this working. But it talks about installing A2SDKiller specific to your ROM. Where would I find this?
Alternatively, if my phone is looking for Data2SD, is there anyway to stop it doing this, if it is this that is interfering with A2SD working properly?

You need to have your SD card partitioned properly. Also A2SD is automatic so you dont need to do anything.
i partition ext2 & upgraded to ext4 already. it shown success. i dont know which method i done wrong...

idk how you did it, hopefully with the recovery image menu. then you did it right.
what you did wrong was executing a2sd manually. all you need to do is partition your card and flash mcr3.1, that's why it says "automatic" in the description.
instructions for upgrading the recovery image are in the first post of the recovery image thread.
i do it auto & the apps doesnt install on the sd card that y i do it manually >.<"
i just do a wipe & re flash everything but when i install apps it still use my phone internal memory.
Some people say that small chunk of app is still installed in phone.
But I think only small chunk is installed in sd card but large portion is left with phone memory.

can you tell us what makes you come to this conclusion?
please post the output of
Code:
adb shell ls -l /data/app
and
Code:
adb shell mount
while the phone is turned on normally.
edit: remove of image as is wrong command
As for my recovery upgrade i was just able to flash to recovery 1.5.2 already. due to ext4 issue after i follow the code: tune2fs -E test_fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
when i free will re-flash modaco 3.1 to try the a2sd again. hope i able to do it this time...
Would like to know after flashing rom, was it normal that my hero keep on reboot non-stop? should i remove the battery? or should i wait?(so far i always remove the battery as the reboot will never end after more then 30mins-1hour)

you didn't get the first command right, please try again just to make sure. the output of "adb mount" tells us that you have an ext4 partition on your card, which is mounted to /system/sd. the first command (if entered correctly) will most probably show you that /data/app (where apps are installed) is a symbolic link to /system/sd (a.k.a. your ext4 partition). if you had searched for the problem this would not have been necessary... and you could have found the explanation why the internal memory is still decreasing.
Hope this is the correct command:
As i just do a re-flash mdc 3.1 on recovery v1.5.2.
now i still unable to install app in my sdcard as my internal memory is keep on reducing while i install apps.

How do i Install apps2sd after rooting with unrevoked

Hi, I have searched for the answer but cant find it
I rooted with unrevoked yesterday and installed the clockworkmod recovery as well.
i downloaded r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip
and put it on the root of my sd card
i then entered the recovery wiped data and cache which wiped and tried to wipe dalvik though nothing appeared to happen.
i then tried to flash the above mentioned zip of apps2sd
it starts flashing but then comes to a message saying...
can't symlink system xbin failure at line 5 symlink busybox
so what am i doing wrong?
any help would be much appreciated.
i have a nandroid backup.
I tried for ages to get a2sd on my stock rooted desire. I used several guides all of which failed somewhere.
In the end I gave up and installed PAYS 2.1 ROM with Sense & A2SD. Works fine and looks pretty much like stock.
Use Recovery mode (Push from Windows) to format SD Card with 0MB Swap, 512MB Ext and the rest FAT32. Upgrade the ext2 to ext3 then use ROm Manager from Market to install the new ROM.
Yes, this was what i had been thinking i would have to do. do i need to flash a new radio for pays?
Been trying to do this also.
How do I upgrade to ext3?

Anyone help?
Cheers.
Disappear you mean shortcut only or the whole app?
Do you have an ext3 partition?

I backed up my sd card to pc then used rom manager to partition card then copied my files back to card, then i go into settings and set for apps to be installed to external.
Next i go into market and download an app and it installs itself on the sd card and i make a shortcut on the phone.....everything works fine.
But after a reboot, the shortcut had disappeared and the app is not listed in my "all Apps" but still shows that it is installed if i go into market.
I have this problem with all roms.....i don't know what i'm doing wrong.
The way I understand A2SD and Froyo's app2sd, when you install A2SD/+ enabled rom and partition your sd card, you don't have to set up anything.
It "tricks" rom to use ext partition as part of internal memory, and stores everything it can in ext partition (A2SD storage).
It always worked for me, and you can check this by installing quick system info app from market.
It will show if your ext partition (A2SD storage) is being filled with data - check out this pic that I found with google:

this is an example of worrking A2SD, if it doesn't work, or you haven't partitioned you card, A2SD storage will be unavailable.
Once you choose setting for the apps to be installed to external, you manually switch to Froyo app2sd, which is inferior way to store your apps on sd card. That's why it didn't work for you.
Thanks for the info
I will try again....my phone says A2SD storage -information not available

[Q] MIUI preparation question..

I'm thinking of trying a MIUI rom, on my HTC Desire (Bravo A8181)
Currently i have alpharev Data++ hboot (s-off etc..)
my questions are:
1 there are 3 variations of MIUI available, which one would i need?
A2SD/A2SD+, D2W, D2EXT -PART
2 i have read that partitioning SDcard is required, is this still the case with Data++ hboot?
I've done literally days of searching online for the answers, but the many variations of details and ports are confusing me.
any advice would be awesome
Here's a quick summary of the three types of MIUI XJ I did in a reddit post.
D2EXT is a fairly fast, fairly stable script that will move the entirety of your androids /data partition to an ext2, ext3, or ext4 partition on your sd card (providing it's after your FAT32 partition).
D2W (data2whatever) is a bit less stable than D2EXT since it's much newer than D2EXT, however, it supports a larger range of partition formats, namely, reiserFS which is specifically made to increase performance and longevity of flash memory. It also moves your entire /data partition to your secondary sd card partition.
The version of A2SD which ships with MIUI XJ is a modified Darktremor A2SD script which, by default only moves /data/app and /data/app-private to an SD-ext partition. It leaves the rest of the /data partition untouched because in theory, your phones internal NAND should be faster than your SD card, however, if you have an SD card that is class4 or faster, the presumed speed decrease will be minimal, if at all. This script does support the moving of the dalvik-cache (Which, next to the actual apks themselves, takes up the most space) to the sd-ext as well.
The reason for having these is because the HTC Desire has a very small data partition and it often fills up very quickly. For MIUI XJ I usually go for the D2EXT because it's tried and true, very stable, and allows me to have up to 2GB of apks/cache data. Whereas the A2SD script still runs out of memory fairly quickly, and D2W is less (Though almost innoticably) stable.

With the data++ partition table, I'd recommend going A2SD/A2SD+ and partitioning your SD card with either ROM manager, or, if you'd like I can link you to a tutorial I wrote up. If you still find yourself running out of space, then maybe you should consider running D2EXT.

Thanks for the info, very informative, clears a lot of questions that i had
so if i understand correctly, i could try the A2SD/A2SD+ version on my current data++ partition table, as long as i have partitioned my sd card with either ext/2/3/4 ?
if i could get the link to the tutorial, that would be awesome thanks
What are your thoughts on miui in comparison to the stock htc sense?
thanks
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php Download this, and burn it to a CD/DVD or put it on a USB drive, the instructions for how to do this are on the page.
While that downloads backup all important information stored on your SD card as there is a small chance of data loss to your SD cards FAT32 partition.
Once you're gone, boot off the USB drive or the CD/DVD and make sure that your SD card is mounted to your computer via your phone then run the gparted app (Not entirely sure where it is since I have a Linux install and I just used that to make an ext partition).
Once in the utility, select your SD card in the drop down menu in the top right of the window.
Right click your FAT32 partition and select unmount.
Right click on your SD cards FAT32 partition and select resize.
Shrink your partition leaving the appropriate size (I recommend at least 750 MB, but then again I use a 16GB sd card) after your FAT partition.
Hit the check mark at the top of the window to apply the changes.
Once that's done, right click the grey space at the end of the drive and select format to > Ext4
Hit the check mark again to apply the changes.
Optionally, since you've backed up your FAT32 partition, you can right click > format to > Fat32 to remove all the gunk on it created by Android through general use. I find whenever I'm playing with partitions it's nice to make sure that everything's all nice and smooth by formatting everything that I can that won't cause severe data loss.
Head back into windows and flash your ROM
I don't really have any opinions on HTC sense since my phone has a weird glitch with every single HTC sense ROM I've tried. I've even flashed an RUU then reflashed a sense ROM and the glitch persisted. I am unable to use the stock web browser or any browser based off it (Basically anything but Firefox and Opera) on 3g. I have no idea why this is happening and I've asked multiple devs about it and they have no idea what's wrong. Bottomline, I like HTC sense, but am unable to use it, thus MIUI has become my ROM of choice and I'm now loyal to it and wouldn't go back to sense even if it worked fine.

Here's where im at...
Installed D2Ext version and really liking it, originally tried A2SD version, but think the D2Ext seems a bit more fluid, could be my imagination though.
1 question, which MIUI updater should i be using, to notify, download and update with?
I saw a link on the MIUI XJ page, and downloaded one (v7), but not sure it was the right one. it notifies of update, downloads, then when i click apply, it reboots into recovery, and shows exclamation mark.
then when i try to apply update manually, i get a signature verification error.
not a major, but would really like to correct the updating system if possible..
all suggestions welcome
According to MIUI thread, method b (system update) is the method for you:
METHOD B: UPDATING YOUR ROM
THIS ONE IS FULL SUPPORT FOR D2EXT X-PART USERS:
PARTIAL FOR A2SD and D2W, CAN'T FLASH if KERNEL CHANGE in X-PART
MIUI System Update (Introduced in MIUI XJ 1.5.6)
Updates can be applied after download too when it failed in a2sd, d2w,
If you got can't mount devblock blah blah blah, just browse and flash the zip from sdcard (downloaded_rom)

I have a second question...
I have a 16gb Class 6 SD Card, with 1gb EXT4 Partition after Fat32 Partition.
I've been doing some reading and searching and seen some references to a Linux-Swap partition (100mb) after the EXT4 Partition .
I'm using MIUI XJ D2Ext, and seems to be working perfectly (as far as i can tell).
1: Can anyone clarify, or recommend correct partitioning for my card as mentioned above for the MIUI XJ D2EXT Rom?
2: Is the EXT partition better as EXT4 or is EXT3 better?
thanks heaps to all that can help with suggestions

[Q]Hboot CM7 r2 problem? (with Coolsense 3D Aces v6 Bravo)

Hello i am an old user of this superb forum, but now i must write my first problem, here we go:
I got a problem about free space when i use CM7 r2 hboot.
as we know we should have this configuration:
/system=145 MB
/cache=5MB
/data=287MB
So i changed my hboot by two methods (because i got problem so i tried to do it again with other method):
- first was via FastbootCommander v 1.51
- second via recovery FLASH HBOOT IMAGE etc.
after changing hboot i did full wipe, then partition align, then i install the rom (rom link here: http://www.cooldevs.com/archives/394).
When i got new installed rom and i check the free space, i got this results:
135 free and 252 used space.
What was wrong?
Here is a prtsc how look like partitions on my sd-card (Disk3 ~16GB):

Sometimes aligning breaks the partition. Also I think you may find the last line of my signature interesting given what i see in your screen shot

I forgot, i made partition with gparted which was booted from USB drive, MiniTool i use only for confirm how look like my SD-Card
How did you align? Gparted already aligns... further alignment breaks the partitioning

i use Cool_alignment.zip, i shouldn't? well it is a new point of view... let me check
ps. it is good option to change hboot via recovery? i heard opinion the best way is via command line, but it works fine, also via recovery hmmm
UPDATE:
I changed hboot with recovery, after flash without alignment my desire stuck on the splashscreen... any sollution?
UDATE2:
Now rom works, but still have 135MB free and 151 used... strange... (i get jboot cm7 r2, then wipe all data, then flash the rom without alignment and still same)

Surely that is working then? The stock Desire only has about 137Mb free with nothing installed, yours is reporting 286Mb in total if I am not mistaken (add the two figures together).

Nooooo you really shouldn't. Gparted does everything you need, simply by pressing apply. Including alignment. That zip is for people who use cwm or ROM manger which uses SDparted with no alignment.
Even if everything works, I'd recommend deleting and retreating the partition in Gparted to undo the zip

Your post reminds me of simple facts, these being that numpties shouldn't be let loose on phones other than the old, basic Nokias.

CM7 works sweet on my HTC Desire - I used UNREVOKED3, Clockwork Mod, the RADIO CM recommend, and once booted I used S2E to give me lots of application space.

Bad news, i tried few times with other card and still don't know where is the problem i also check Data++ hboot, and after fresh and new instalation i got 252MB for Data but half of them are used (151MB used and 102 FREE it is little impossible on the fresh and new installation) (why?)
Any other suggestions? ideas? maybe this rom is little bugged? or i should format my SD card?
if i format again my SD card, what size i should set?
For FAT32 and for EXT4? (i got 16GB, 10class card) maybe my EXT4 partition is too big? about 1,51GB?
Best regards.
You can't see ext4 partition under normal system (system/application/manage apps) due to your sdcard is not mounted as /data. Your apps you installed are on sdext/app symlinked back to data/app you need to use 3rd party app to see free space on sdext... For more info look for a2sd+ and data+ script and see the difference
I recommend to use amarullz script, which is mounting sdext to as /data and real data (data partition on the phone) is used for sys app dalvik, u will be able to see your free space on ext 4 in the manage apps
Size of ext4 must be up to 2 gb for stability reason, hope this helps

Sorry for not fresh update but i got some good news.
When i reparted (this word is correct?) my SD-card again, and set EXT4 size lower, to 1GB size, this ROM (CoolSense 3D) with CM7r2 hboot work great.
Results, don't be greedy and use less space for APPSors!!!!
Best regards.
My config is:
SD-card (16GB class 10 - AData)
Fat32 - 14,5GB (created as Primary)
Ext4 - 1GB (created as Primary)
Good luck, for people which have the same issue

Insufficient storage..

Hey peeps.
I've run into a problem recently. I don't have enough storlage space left for installing apps from the market.
I'm using an ICS Rom by sandvold.com. I have partioned 2 gigabytes of my 32 gigs SD card to be used for a2sd and so far only 500 mb is in use. Both my dalvik cache and app data are on the sd card.
During the installation of a2sd in my Rom I chose to use the stock version.
Does anyone know a possible solution to my problem?
Ty in advance!

Open Terminal Emulator on your phone and type
Code:
su
a2sd install
I have done that already. How would I else be able to have my dalvik cache and app data on my sd card..?

If you want to know where all your free space has gone, try Diskusage app, and check your data partition...
Probably the cache of some of your apps has grown too much...
I had the same problem before I changed to Data++ hboot, and to COS ICS ROM (with dalvik2sd option)

I've just realized you can't install apps from the market...
Try clearing caches and/or data from your browsers. Or even games... When you have enough free space for installing, try Diskusage then...

I managed to clear up a little space by clearing my browser cache to install an app that easily clears my cache. I wanted to link my Titanium backup screenshot and the response to writing the command written above. Finally booted up my pc and here they are:

I'm gonna try that disk app in a few hours..
Help is here!
I had the same problem.I have a desire stock 2.2.2 rooted and the space is very limited. This is what i done:
I partition my sd card ext2/ext3 (ext4 doesn't work)
Installed link 2 sd (when you first launch you will be prompted what partition you have ext2/ext3/ext4)
Restart the phone and you are done.
After linking the apps( i mean i linked in first restart 40+) the phone will boot slowly but after that it will be faster.
Hope helps you
I thank you much for the reply, but this is already what I've done and I'm out of space again, with my SD partitioned. I partitioned 2 GB of storage on my SD and it isn't using it all as you see on the titanium backup screenshot. I have no clue on how to fix it..

I checked with the Diskusage app and found that approximately 600 MB was allocated for cache and data. Why isn't all of my 2 GB of sd-ext added to this "list"? Any suggestions would be apreciated.
Your output clearly shows A2SD is not working. Which means, Apps and Dalvik-Cache are not moved to SD-EXT.
So please run
Code:
a2sd install
After successfull reboot (script will you asking to do so after answering the question which data should be moved), please the output of this command again
Code:
ls -l /data
I ran the "a2sd install" command, moved dalvik and moved data by writing "y" to the questions.. After that I performed a reboot.
I then ran the command you wrote: ls -l /data.
I could be worth mentioning that during the installation of my ICS rom I choose to use the stock a2sd. I used to have a GB rom on my Desire some time ago. Back then I was using some other script called Darktremor and that worked. I have the opportunity to try another a2sd script during the installation of my rom. Any suggestions?
Ok this is what i suggest:
Remove the sim and memory card
If you have an card reader (backup your fat 32 partition and format it ;after that format ex2/ext3 partition)
Restore backup on the fat32 partition
Now do the phone a factory reset
Wait till it boots
Restart it
Put back the sd card and sim in the phone
Go to market and install link 2 sd and do the method i write in last post.
If this dosn't work flash data++ hboot from alpharev site
A2SD is still not working. How and with witch program did you partition your SD card?
MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Ok now i know what you are talking about:whatever you install it gives you inssuficient memory.I had the same prob after installing some app from market.I just installed it and it worked good then.
I used the recoverymode (Revolutionary) to partition my SD card, but it was an entirely new SD card at the time I installed it in my phone for about 1 month ago. I hadn't formatted it before I started using it.
I'm gonna try your method mansamihai, and get it done today hopefully. Not being able to install/update apps is driving me crazy.

do not use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition for creating your ext partition.
while it may work for some, in lots of cases it can cause more problems.
backup your sd card to computer first, then try partitioning from scratch again.
gparted is recommended above anything else, or use 4ext recovery.
I used the partition function in the revolutionary recovery mode to partition my SD. I've made it to the point where I should choose which file system my SD cards partition is in the Link2SD app and I have no clue which one to choose? Any chance for a bit of help here?
I tried the to do it all over again, sadly without any change in results..
It is still not working..
Any suggestions on what to do now?
Thanks in advance!
