[Q] How reliable is wifi calling? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

So how reliable is wifi calling? When it comes to sending text messages and such and also with battery life? with it on would i get more battery life? Thanks guys!

Its as rreliable as your wifi network. Qnd it uses the same amount of battery as being on wifi without wifi calling.

I love it. Better battery life when there is no active cellular connection active.

Will that work overseas providing you have a wifi connection?

yes. no roaming charges with wifi calling ! still have to be careful especially if you use some custom ROM. i used it on G2x w/ ROM and though it was working but it didnt and i got billed $$$. buddy with s2 didnt pay a dime.

Yes as far as I know, with no roaming fees either I would double check to be sure though. Not positive on that one.

Having owned both, we really do have the better phone.
I'm going to ask this, but I'll probably be killed with insults, anyway whats the big deal with wifi calling? I have unlimited phone calls, so how come everyone is so jazzed about wifi calling?
Just Curious, I have used wifi calling before on my old Vibrant and when I was talking on my phone in the house it was great, then walk out to my car and drive somewhere it would drop the call because the phone switched from wifi to network. Thats just not going to work for me.

Wifi calling is for people who have bad reception in their home, office etc. I personally do not care for this feature because I have great reception just about everywhere I go.

and i believe wifi calling still uses your minutes. just to clear things up, there are other apps like google voice that doesn't uses minutes over wifi.

Wow. Thats what Wifi calling is for...using your wifi's signal to make phone calls. Very useful for others that have weak phone signal at home.
Not to mention good on battery. It turns off the radio chip when its in use as well.
The amaze needs all the help it can get.

[Q] Wifi Calling GPS??

Every time I turn on WiFi and it initiates WiFi Calling, I notice that the GPS signal comes on for about 5-10seconds. Why would it pull my GPS location when starting WiFi calling?
Is this for 911 calling (hopefully), or is this to prevent you from using WiFi calling internationally to make free calls back home to the US?
Probably to bill international callers

That is what I am worried about. I am actually headed to Canada tomorrow and thinking I want to try it from a Tim Hortons or something but I am a little bit chicken haha.
It doesn't seem fair that they would do that... It doesn't matter/cost anything to them where I am connecting over WiFi from as long as I am not connecting via a tower.

Just use google voice free calls to from U.S to canada or use a sip account.
I don't think for international billing. What if you are in the building or basement where no GPS signal. In addition, if they want, they still could check ip address.

ip is assigned by t-mobile, so it wouldn't necessarily very by location.
while yes, they could look it up, that would use their resources, and they would much rather use your battery and abuse your privacy.

No, I mean the source IP which uses to connect to wifi calling unless you run through proxy, then it could be you are in US and have European ip .....But it is so true that "they would much rather use your battery and abuse your privacy"
Bump. I have been noticing this since updating to ICS. How do I get it to stop?

Wi-Fi Teather for CM7.2?

Searched and still didn't find it. Sorry if it is out there. Is there something lurking about to allow wi-fi teathering on the DINK using CM7.2? would be nice to use it for my laptop when I'm away from the house.
Isn't it @
menu>settings>Wireless&network>Tethering & portable hotspot?
Ah it is in menu>settings but farther down the list. Tethering & portable hotspot. Thanks! Didn't even realize that was even there!!!!!
Edit: Reading the info from the help section there, I wonder if the hotspot part could still incur charges from Verizon if I use that feature. My understanding was that the wi-fi tethering was different that the hotsopt feature. Does anyone have any information?

If you are running CM7 you wont incur any extra charges from Verizon, ive been using mine for over a year.
Hope you're right. The wife will kill me if I use it and Verizon charges us for using it.

+1 i also have been using it for ever and not one extra charge. to my knowledge. 3g tether is undetectable dude to how the network see's the data coming in and out as a whole.
hell you can even edit your cdma settings if you are on a stock rom to use narrative tethering.
How do you do that syn?

Native WiFi calling vs GrooveIP vs Talkatone

Hey guys.
Does anybody have experience in using all of them on TMo 4g and WiFi?
As far as I know TMo WiFi calling counts cell minutes, but how it is in quality comparison to GrooveIP and Talkatone bundled to GVoice number?

in an ideal situation, with a solid connection, all these services performs very well. In less than ideal wireless connection, you I would rate Magic Jack> Tmobile wifi> Talkatone.
FYI, tmobile wifi calling does NOT use calling minutes if you have a grand fathered plan. Just make sure you add the "free wifi calling" features on to your account on each line you want this feature.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to add this feature cause I'm going to get 30 usd prepaid plan with 100 minutes and 5gb of their 4g.
If you are on $30/month plan Wi-Fi calling will eat up your minutes
I don't have groove ip but I use Talkatone : it's okay and call quality can be horrible if you don't have good connection

TMo has awesome hspa coverage in my area so I'll give em try then post what I got.
vonage works the best for me for wifi calling.

T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling would be best as it uses Wi-Fi to call.
Talkatone isn't too bad. I get some background white noise. When using it on 3g/4g it could get quite bad.

T Mobile WIFI calling..how big is for you?

So as much as I love my note2 I want to talk about something not unique to it..wifi calling
When I switched to the note2 I also switched to t mobile from sprint..I wanted an gsm note2 I could unlocked for international travel to use in country sims so tmobile was the choice.
But the thing is when I go overseas im almost always in a hotel with wifi..and tmobile wifi calling has been a God sent. .ive never even had to swap out for local sim..calling, texting, back home all over wifi at local us rates..how great is that..it is my favorite feature..yet almost no other carrier has anything like it.. surprising

Not important for me at all
CARBON NIGHTLY | CABIN FEVER WHISKY
I'd use the crap out of it if it didn't use my minutes
I'm sure it's useful for those people who don't get a good signal at home, which isn't me, so it's pretty useless and unimportant.
I use it all the time.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
When people are in buildings that cell signals can't penetrate, they quickly become jealous of wi-fi calling. Having this additional capability is simply awesome sauce when you need it.

Thanks thats great news for me Che Cheng
It is the most important thing. Without it I wouldn't be able to use my phone 75% of the places I go. Can't afford Verizon anymore hence my T-Mobile venture. Once again...thank goodness for WiFi calling.

Critical.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
This is an addon with some biz plans. Critical for my company as alot my techs are in datacenters which have cell blocking tech, the buildings are just to thick, or some with heavy RF interference etc for any signal to get through. Even more when my guys are on the road. Beyond the lie that vzw or att say is everywhere, my guys can always pull off road at a pukeUds and call in.

It is one of the best features of the phone IMO. In many areas (like mine), T-Mo is actually worse than it was 10 years ago (when they were borrowing AT&T networks), with only 3G/4G in some spots and 90% Edge. I think it's great that they included something like that to keep customers sorta happy. I was afraid the voice would be terrible on it but it isnt. I wish other carriers had something like that.
Do you know if there's a way to enable Wi-Fi calling with moderate Wi-Fi connection? My device takes literally 10 minutes because my WiFi connection fluctuates from full bars to like three so it never connects.
WiFi call is the main reason I stay with T-Mobile/stock ROM. Especially I travel overseas a lot.
