T-Mobile GS4 and HD Voice? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

When I talk with my wife on my HTC One or iPhone 5 (she uses an i5 as well), we're connected via HD Voice, and it is awesome.
However, with the S4, it never seems to be in HD Voice. I've read in a few places it supports HD Voice, and I can't figure out if I'm missing something, or if it's arbitrary depending on network conditions, or what. I did make sure it's not using Wifi calling, but other than I'm not sure what else to do.
Not a huge issue in the realm of things, but if I'm supposed to be able to use it, it would be nice!

Slightly louder, much clearer than your average phone call and there's no white noise (which I know has been intentionally added in the past to let the other person know that you're still on the phone)

FaceTime on Android?

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this. As you guys can imagine, FaceTime is going to be the new craze among iPhone 4 users. As much as I hate to say it, Apple will be the ones to make voice calling finally take off.
Qik is meh, and Skype video chat is still up in the air (no pun intended).
So that begs the question, would it be possible to make a device such as the Evo emulate FaceTime (with an iPhone 4 caller). Considering it's over WiFi, I don't see how it couldn't be possible.
They claim FaceTime is supposed to be an "open" standard, though I am a bit dubious to this considering H.264/AAC is involved.
Anyhow, all licensing and networking aside, I think we can agree that it is somewhat remotely possible and also really neat of an idea.
I know it's a bit early, but are there any teams talking about/working on this? I'm a developer (and learning the Android ropes at the moment) and would love to help contribute to something like this.
Comments, thoughts, and suggestions all welcome!
Yup, we'll see it eventually. As you said, FaceTime is an open standard and will probably be adopted on many different platforms. H.264 and AAC encoding's wont cause a problem, and will actually be beneficial due to it's compression versus quality ratio. Couple that together with the fact that the Evo already supports them out of the box, it's a no-brainer!
Eventually most likely all devices will connect somehow. This is a question though and would be more fit for the Q&A forum
The cool thing will be that we will likely be able to connect to FaceTime via 3G/4G and they will need Wifi because of Apple/ATT's control.
I would love to help out with this in any way I can, I can't do code but if you need graphics for the project, just pm me.
take it for what its worth, but Engadget did a test of facetime with mifi devices and the results were piss poor... we're probably better off using qik or some system that is designed for mobile networks.

I agree with you.
I don't think we need someone on Android to implement FaceTime... I'd rather have Fring, Qik or Skype put 2-way chat on the iPhone 4. It's not like I'm going to be in a call with someone and be like, oh, lets switch over to video so we can see each other. I'm fine with using a dedicated client and I think most iPhone users would be too.

I agree somewhat. I've used it a couple times but the lack of quality makes it a gimmick. If it was higher quality and more people could connect, I would probably use it more and think it was less gimmicky.

Yeah, so far video chatting from phone to phone is such a gimmick. However, I see some potential for video chatting from evo to computer. There isn't many video chat enabled phones out there but plenty of people with computers to video chat with. I just haven't found the right softwares for the phone and computer to use.
fring on evo connected with skype on computer is flawless, sound and video...if you have strong 3g/4g/wifi signal

Facetime application for Android
I switched from Apple to HTC EVO and I am very happy with HTC EVO. It is awesome. However if you look at the quality of video on face time it is amazing. The video and audio quality through Fring is no way comparable to facetime. Also people have connected using tethering through HTC EVO and connected two iphones with facetime. Excellent quality over 3G through HTC EVO. Summary, it will be nice to have an application like factime... Thanks

[Q] Two Questions Regarding the DINC

I'm loving my dinc. The things I don't like are the invisible screen in daylight and the lack of full duplex on the phone. These are 2 major pains in the butt.
1- Can anyone tell me how the new s-lcd screens compare with the amoled?
2- Is it possible to get full duplex?

1. As sites recently have said view compare to about the same. But I can't tell you first hand as mind is amolled.
2. Full duplex is available. Every time you make a call. That is duplexing. The process of sending and receiving information simultaneously. What we want is multiplexing. And as for that I don't know. It could be software, but more likely it's built right into the phone, or that Verizon refuses to multiplex
Sent from my ADR6300 using Virtuous 1.7 through XDA App
Thanks for clearing up that terminology. When I use my mic my speaker cuts out. I thought full duplex meant you could use mic and speaker simultaneously. Sounds like your saying that is multiplexing. I don't remember having this problem with my Razr. I was with ATT then also. Maybe this more CDMA bullsh** like no voice and data at the same time.
Yeah I'm pretty sure Verizon stops the multiplexing of both voice and data. I think its bull also but unless they change it were probably sol.
My speaker cuts out a lil when using speaker phone.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Virtuous 3.01 through XDA App
Simultaneous voice and data are not enabled. There is a network upgrade that would allow it but I guess they don't plan on doing it. I'm talking about just being able to have the speaker and mic active at the same time on a call!

you can talk while people are talking to you during normal voice conversations, but why in the h377 would you want to do that , and how would you even test that, during a phone call on speaker phone?

So you cannot activate speakerphone during a call and have the Mic receive your voice input. That is a problem if so. Are you running a custom ROM. If you are, you should report it to the maker. If you are running stock ROM Idk could be software or hardware. Has this problem existed since you acquired the phone?
Never heard of a Verizon network upgrade. Maybe 4g capabilities. Hmmm.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Virtuous 3.01 through XDA App
Actually I noticed it yesterday using the regular mic, not the speakerphone. I was listening to a recorded message and if a spoke it would cut out and then come back when I was quiet. I just tried it again a live call and all is well. Weird. It may have been a transient problem or something that happens with low signal. I thought I just had never noticed it. Neevermind

Resolved
I will.
Still wondering if I should try to switch to a phone with the newer screen though. Would love to see in the light!
I was kinda wondering about the screen thing myself. SLCD is an IPS panel, similar to what the iPhone 4 offers. I wish there could be an easy way to get the screens changed without having to sell and re-buy, but depending on the difference I may just do that. AMOLED, despite its awesome colors and deep blacks, have too many quirks that I don't like dealing with. Sunlight visibility and sharpness are two of them.
Would love to see some impressions though!
Sent from my Droid Incredible running SkyRaider Vanilla 3.0
Just Google surfed. Plenty of comparisons out there. pros and cons for both. For me better visibility in sunlight is important. From what a saw not huge difference there.
I prefer the sharpness of text on the SLCD over OLED

Nope not 4G, though LTE will be able to handle it for certain. I believe he was talking about the development of SVDO, 3G tech which allows for voice and data to be active at the same time like GSM
Ok. I don't know of one speakerphone that's full-duplex.. I'm not an expert on every speakerphone masse by mankind, but I do know some speakerphones function more pleasant than others... If the speakerphone was full duplex then the caller would here themselves speak.
And in real life that can still happen if the volume is too high.
Nope not 4G, though LTE will be able to handle it for certain. I believe he was talking about the development of SVDO, 3G tech which allows for voice and data to be active at the same time like GSM
Yes. There is a network upgrade available. I think it is am matter of changing cards in the towers.one of it's benefits is simultaneous voice and data.
Here is a little reading on duplexity http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duplex_(telecommunications)?wasRedirected=true.
Of course the speaker it self isn't meant to duplex. The phone it self is duplexd. Hmmm I like the idea of both voice and data at the same time.I'm Gonna have to look into SVDO and LTE technologies
Sent from my ADR6300 using Virtuous 1.7 through XDA App
Currently CDMA does not allow you to use both voice and data at the same time over a 3g connection. The frequency only allows one or the other through, with voice overriding data. If you are on WIFI you can use voice and data at the same time.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus wifi death grip again? Probably YES.

Look at this video:
LINK
You can clearly see that, as the guy keeps the hand off the back of the phone, the wifi signal boosts up from zero to 3 bars.
In all the review as well, you can notice that as the reviewer grips the device, the wifi signal goes bad.
Damn it, again, as the Galaxy S2, wifi grip issue.
Thank you Samsung, Aloha Nexus.
There are very few phones that don't do this. To antennas used to be at the top of the device away from your hand, but ever since someone decided phones give you cancer they moved the antennas to the bottom.
I'd rather have cancer and actually get reception.
If we stopped this form over function nonsense the manufacturers could put proper antennas on phones like they used to have. Then this sort of thing wouldn't be a problem.

Very true, people use other apps to video call each other via wifi or 3g.
Maybe its not such a surprise after all..
Samsung phones support this. But it is important to understand that native video calling uses generic 3G speeds only for video quality. Whereas Skype and other solutions make full use of an HSPA connection resulting in MUCH higher video quality. While it would be good to have 3G video calling for completeness, it is an outdated technology, bettered significantly by the likes of Skype.

I understand all your points..
But its one thing to not use a facility but not to have it in a top smartphone raises a little concern right?
Why Sony is not incorporating native video calling in their xperia S is out of my understanding...
Nokia has it in their Symbians and even Windows phones...
Samsung has done in their few androids as well...
And few more...
why cant Sony...

When the SGS2 came out the majority wanted to know how to remove the 3G video calling option from the dialer. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Even where handsets do have Video over 3g enabled (like some Nokia's) there are still limitations between carriers…. some carriers wont accept video calls from other carriers , and others wont allow outgoing calls to other carriers. Think their maybe some compatibility issues between handsets too.
So, even though your dependant on both caller and receiver having Skype etc on their handsets and having a good data plan (or wifi), these limitations are only as prohibitive of the native 3g calling
Steve
Geez I never that I couldnt make video calling seems a waste though to say teh least, then again havnt made one since it was first introduced
video call have lesser rates compared to 3g data. And here in India 3g is much costlier
i dont see why those who are against 3G calls are against it !
In some parts of the world, VOIP (or any video calls that uses internet) is prohibited unless licensed by the telecommunications regulatory bodies and telecos. This is practiced to ensure a monopolistic dominance over the teleco market, which draws a massive amount of its profits from expatriates making very expensive calls (voice calls or even using the internet) to their home countries.
In the united arab emirates where i live for example, even skype runs with alot of hiccups due to this, not to mention that the website itself is blocked. So yes it may be 2012 to you guys, but over here is no later than the late 90s when it comes to this regard.
That being said, HTC should've done like samsung, they equipped their phones with 3G calls capability anyways, and thats it. And btw, 3G calls are so popular here because 3G data plans are in contrast more expensive than those calls themselves. Its their house and their rules...HTC are so deluded !
If samsung included it in their phones then HTC (or any other phone maker) should. Weather its used by the end user or not is a personal matter between the phone and the user.
And did anyone find any reasonable video call APP? Skype does not support HOX yet, and max possible resolution is 320x240. This kinda sucks. Gtalk is not any better to be honest. Best quality i was able to achieve was Google+ Hangout but still it was far from what HOX has to offer (1280x720).
