I own a Iphone 4, Galaxy SL and Dinc2. Both Andriods are unusable in skype/tango with the ffc in low light conditions. The Iphone 4 has no issues. Is there a solution to this on the Dinc2?

I own an iphone 4 too (for work) FFC does not work well in low light conditions. I don't know of a single FFC that works well in low light conditions.
Unless you're using a flashlight or something else, video chat in the dark is not a logical thing to do any way

Why?? They're meant to be just good enough. They're VGA cameras, I mean you could put a better camera in there with a higher resolution but then guess what? Your streaming data just doubled.

I hope you mean while riding at night and not driving. I'm not one of those "super strict safe drivers" but that sounds a bit hazardous haha. Wouldn't a regular voice call suffice while driving since you "hopefully" aren't paying much attention to the person on the other end of the call and they wouldn't be watching you do anything other than watching you drive? (Hopefully.)

Well in your hypothetical situation you would obviously not care that much about the person because you'd be fine endangering their life by video chatting while driving. Therefore I'd think you'd find it kinda funny to see.

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this. As you guys can imagine, FaceTime is going to be the new craze among iPhone 4 users. As much as I hate to say it, Apple will be the ones to make voice calling finally take off.
Qik is meh, and Skype video chat is still up in the air (no pun intended).
So that begs the question, would it be possible to make a device such as the Evo emulate FaceTime (with an iPhone 4 caller). Considering it's over WiFi, I don't see how it couldn't be possible.
They claim FaceTime is supposed to be an "open" standard, though I am a bit dubious to this considering H.264/AAC is involved.
Anyhow, all licensing and networking aside, I think we can agree that it is somewhat remotely possible and also really neat of an idea.
I know it's a bit early, but are there any teams talking about/working on this? I'm a developer (and learning the Android ropes at the moment) and would love to help contribute to something like this.
Comments, thoughts, and suggestions all welcome!
Yup, we'll see it eventually. As you said, FaceTime is an open standard and will probably be adopted on many different platforms. H.264 and AAC encoding's wont cause a problem, and will actually be beneficial due to it's compression versus quality ratio. Couple that together with the fact that the Evo already supports them out of the box, it's a no-brainer!
Eventually most likely all devices will connect somehow. This is a question though and would be more fit for the Q&A forum
The cool thing will be that we will likely be able to connect to FaceTime via 3G/4G and they will need Wifi because of Apple/ATT's control.
I would love to help out with this in any way I can, I can't do code but if you need graphics for the project, just pm me.
take it for what its worth, but Engadget did a test of facetime with mifi devices and the results were piss poor... we're probably better off using qik or some system that is designed for mobile networks.

I agree with you.
I don't think we need someone on Android to implement FaceTime... I'd rather have Fring, Qik or Skype put 2-way chat on the iPhone 4. It's not like I'm going to be in a call with someone and be like, oh, lets switch over to video so we can see each other. I'm fine with using a dedicated client and I think most iPhone users would be too.

Facetime application for Android
I switched from Apple to HTC EVO and I am very happy with HTC EVO. It is awesome. However if you look at the quality of video on face time it is amazing. The video and audio quality through Fring is no way comparable to facetime. Also people have connected using tethering through HTC EVO and connected two iphones with facetime. Excellent quality over 3G through HTC EVO. Summary, it will be nice to have an application like factime... Thanks

I posted this in the Q&A section and it got a couple of hits the quickly got buried. I was wonder if an app existed or could be developed that would allow you when recording to pause and restat a video without you having to start a whole new video.
I thought about this when my wife was using her evo to record our daughters basketball game and she kept having to stop and start new videos to conserve card space when it would have been easier to pause and resume recording.
I know this could go in the Q&A section but I figured if a developer saw this and had some time or was looking for a new project this would be a good one I think.

It would be easier to just concatenate the two videos when you need to rather than rewriting the whole camera stack just for that one purpose.
And wrong forum.
I hate to sound rude, but this is a cell phone. It shouldnt be used like a real camera to record your family's important things. If you want a camcorder that will stop and start without making a new clip, you will need a real handheld camcorder. There aren't any apps as far as I know that can do this.

LMAOOOOO i just understood why u said this about 30 seconds after reading this
if it's a relatively new phone, you can have your wife return it and get the Epic.
My wife has the Epic and it allows you to pause the video and resume without splitting.
Also, the video quality is far, far superior to the Evo. it boarders on Flip quality.
So that's something you can do.
Ok, i get what some people mean by using a dedicated camera for recording but she as well as i both have evo's and we carry those everywhere vs the awh i wish i had a camera moment.
The next thing is that the evo can and does record high quality videos (hdmi out) so why not have an app that makes it act live a regular video camera?
Its too late to swap them out for epic, and i prefer the evo to the epic.
I know there are several phones thst can do it so its not impossible
I know its only about 5 post deep already but i explained why i put this here vs as well as the q&a section.
The evo video quality is far better than flip quality. Come on people really do some of you just sit and wait for an idea to get posted to shoot it down i mean really is that all you guys have in life? If so im happy to give you a reason not to kill yourself.

If the EVO was just a cell phone then I would say you have a point. But the EVO is not built to be just a cell phone, its a smartphone and even saying that is degrading what it do. I had an old 2mp kodak camera a while back which had a small card in it. now you have the EVO with an 8mp camera and a 8gb card and you say don't take pictures. Same thing with the camcorder. If I buy a device worth 400/500 dollars it better be able to do something other than just take cell phone calls. So if dude wants to record rare moments of life that only can be caught if you have a device like this handy, then I say let him. Its not his fault a 3min 5min video is like 2gb. That is where the problem lies, files shouldnt be like that especially if its just a cell phone.

I agree that they should not have had battery life ONLY for their phone. Either have it for both or don't mention it. But I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Epic matched the 4s in battery. Not only is the 4s battery worse than the 4, the epic actually had good battery life according to the reviews.
But yeah, that's pretty dumb how they did that chart. They also didn't mention resolution of the screens. Only the size (which I do love).

It's probably just me not doing it properly through settings, but -
I like the sound/silent switch on the side. I would switch it to silent, and it'd silence everything...period. When I did it with the E4GT at work, some notification still rang even with sound off.
I also like that when you close YouTube and go back, it'd pick up where you left off in iOS5. While with the E4GT, it'd stop loading the video altogether if I were to go to the home screen or to read a txt msg. But I'm still new to this, so there may be ways around this.
Although, I DO like the fact that you can shut off the screen on the E4GT while the YouTube video is playing and just listen to the sounds. (I like to listen to videos...long ones, to help the work day go by)
I suppose that's about it lol... I mean, the iPhone4 was solid, and it was very smooth. But meh, so is my E4GT.

I have no problem with silent mode being silent...but...youtube resume is such a tiny little feature to implement but so god-damned awesome sounding. Why hasn't Google taken care of this? I mean, srsly, with all of the major heavy duty **** they take care of on a day-to-day basis why not this tiny little convenience?
It really does blow my mind how some manufacturers and major software developers (like Samsung and Google) can overlook such simple usability features. It's not like that feature is unique to youtube on iOS....it doesn't take more resources...it isn't complicated.

Yes this function on android is HORRIBLE! There are some pluses to having a million different sound controls. Like the ability to silence text messages at night, but leave phone on. But when I'm in the doctor office, or jury duty I want one button to silence EVERYTHING.

You traded the phone because of gapless? Poweramp does gapless.
I can see where some of you guys are going with this. Since the original Iphone not much has changed. Yeah, the body of the phone sorta changed, some internals and a new screen...but the design hasn't. One reason I never went to the Iphone was due to the fact that everything is propriatary...battery non removable, charging port isn't micro usb..instead it's apples propriatary charger and last but not least...Micro SD card expansion...can't do that on an Iphone. The screen size hasnt changed and facetime is only over wifi. I'm glad I went with the ET4G...it does everything and more than I though it would.

I understand most your reasons but the 3g speeds you must be one of the few lucky ones. Did you get the Iphone 4s on Sprint or a different carrier? Because Iphone Sprint 3g speeds were getting a lot of flack from users all around the country. I saw speedtest screen-shots in many blogs and they averaged below 1kbp/s.
I had a thought today while my 2 1/2 year old was jumping on my back while my 6 month old was laughing hysterically at him and I thought, man I would be nice to use both cameras at the same time to record both things at once. I dont even know if this is possible but it would be awesome if it could happen. Sort of like a picture in picture. I have no idea how to code. So the devs can take this as a challenge, yea, I'm calling out all the awesome devs here to try and make this possible. I know I can't be the only one who would love this and give iPhone users yet another thing to envy.
Mods, if this does not belong in general then I apologize in advance, its not a development release.
Yea. Please someone try to make this happen.

I don't think it is possible to do that! AFAIK, Android APIs do not support recording from both the camera simultaneously, you need to decide between the two!

EVO 3d uses 2 images to merge together to become a 3d image or video... I personally don't think this is possible for the front and back camera as they record 2 different videos.
Although if an app can record in the background you can perhaps open up a different recording program and record with the other camera. Not sure if it's a solid solution but it's worth the try
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hmmmmm, I would like to see what it would look like side by side, so you could show the reaction if something happens on the main camera.
I am by no means a developer but I was just thinking of how it would actually work. I mean, someone may be able to make it all work out, but how good would the actual video be?
If you record from both cameras and want a good shot of both things, they would have to be along the exact same line with the phone somewhere in between (unless what you're recording is a little far away). If both of the things you are recording and yourself do not make a straight line, you'll move to get a shot of one of them but the other camera will then point somewhere else.
Not the best at explaining without some kind of picture but I hope someone gets what I'm talking about, lol. I have 2 young nephews and this would be a great feature to capture some great moments.
Honestly, the only usefulness is for goofing and getting the reaction of the person/s recording. Trying to record two kids on opposite sides with opposing is just silly and the quality of video will be much lower on one video.

Now that actually does sound interesting. I can see the potential for something like that. I would love to see if something like this is possible. The evo 3d has the capability to use two 5mp back facing cameras at once. Seems like there isn't any reason why you couldn't use the front and back cameras at the same time. Although the difficulty would probably be in software.
Would be great for Track day/AutoX runs

+1 for the track day/AutoX idea. Right now I have two Hero cams, one facing each direction and then have to post-process combine them into a split screen video. Would be cool to just put my phone into a secure mount and be done with it.
Even if one camera is of a higher quality - I'd just point the higher quality one forward and the lesser towards the rear.
Just thinking out loud.

Black Box Recorder Use
This would be very useful as a dash cam, vehicle black box, plane log app. Put your device in a holder and attach to the dash or windshield. Start app and set it to record when GPS detects motion and stop after x minutes of non-motion. Record outside the vehicle or plane straight ahead with the main camera. Record inside the vehicle or plane with the front camera. Sync to same timeline for recording/logging purposes.
Could be a good use for an old Android phone if capable of doing it.
Just an idea.
How about for police stops?
not a bad idea at all....
I no longer have the nexus as I have gotten the s3. That being said 4.1.2 is suppose to have the ability to have the ability to use split screen..... just saying open up the camera on one screen and open it again with the front camera on the other screen.... maybe even some screen recording in there to capture both on one clip

what does vignette do that the stock camera can't? It has lots of manual settings and has filters.
Also, I think someone said that 3rd party camera apps lower the resolution to 3.2mp.

I purchased Camera Zoom FX during one of those Google sales, never used it on the S3 but like you I've not been entirely satisfied with the camera on this phone. I have tried it and keep going back and forth from it to stock. I have also tried Camera JB+, Camera Pro, HDR Camera+, Vignette and a few others. Ultra-pixel aside, it is still just 4 megapixel. though I have read that that detail alone does not mean that the camera is superior or inferior. I am by no means an expert in photography, probably don't qualify as amateur. but I know there is a difference however slight between the S3 and this one. BTW, I have still not determined if a 3rd party is better.
Mine certainly seems weak. I can't seem to get it to focus on what I'm trying to get it to focus on. My kid is holding a teddy bear, I click on her face.. it grabs focus on the bear. Every once in a while it'll nail focus and get a beautiful shot but I have the issue with the screen turning red in low light too. So maybe it's the photo sensor or a firmware thing. I'm praying it's firmware because I obviously don't want a replacement device because I'll lose S-OFF.
Verizon, naturally, is no help. "Never heard of it. HTC hasn't told us anything about it. Deal with them." ... So it could just be a 'some devices' kind of thing.. but I can understand why some might think the camera is weak. Coming from an iPhone 5, which took fantastic pictures, I've been very disappointed to say the least. Obviously, YMMV.
And since I'm sure at least someone is thinking 'go back to iPhone then', I'll add. Those shots I mentioned where focus is nailed.. the pictures are great. This camera has potential. I'M just not getting the results yet.
I just got my phone replaced because my camera couldn't focus on anything further than 3 feet away. The majority of my pictures were blurry and unusable, so I went to Verizon and a rep compared it to their floor model and agreed with me. Got it replaced (although they sent me a DNA at first...) and am loving the camera now. Yea the zoom is weak, but I don't mind.
And OP, you're not crazy. But help is on the way...

Google "htc one camera issues" .. It appears those pleased with the camera are in the gross minority.. but that's lucky for them.
One of the blurbs from the article: "In fact a poll was taken recently where 328/388 users said “Yes” to their HTC One having camera problems like the one described above." For the record, that issue was the covering the lens and seeing your screen go red or blue or purple.
Fyi we can install the camera from the Google edition phones via this link

I've installed it and I'm getting nice pictures with the limited testing I did.
It's also got the 'photosphere' which I haven't tried but from what I read it's pretty cool sounding
Sidenote, my other half got the iPhone 5S and I played with the camera for over an hour taking pictures around the house and outside of my dogs... I wish I could rip the camera out of the 5S and put it in my HTC One...it's that good :-/

I'll agree with some but in the end people who don't have problems won't be looking for polls to complain. Same way to put a bias on stats by making sure you're only getting the people who will prove your point. Not saying that its great but for my person use it beats anything I've used. You can prove anything right or wrong for the main reason that the vocal ones are almost always the ones with issues.

Thanks for this. I miss the stock Android camera. And I like the gallery layout better too.

Is it possible to install this camera alongside of the HTC One camera? It would be nice to have both. I don't want to lose some of the features of the HTC One camera.
Thanks!

Yup! I've got it installed alongside the stock HTC camera. It also adds the stock Google "gallery" app too. Very awesome

Ohh that's cool. Didn't know that part... hmm...
Stitching
Anyone able to get their photosphere pictures to stitch together properly with the GPE camera app? Mine are totally jacked! The stitching cuts out big parts of the pictures.

what does vignette do that the stock camera can't? It has lots of manual settings and has filters.
Also, I think someone said that 3rd party camera apps lower the resolution to 3.2mp.

Blue image is the HTC Camera app, The other is Vignette... Vignette is extremely flexible, but not at all easy to use...I like it's filters. But, by and large, I am getting great shots with the stock app...I really hope that update fixes the purple/blue issues because it obviously is a software issue. If Vignette can get it right, then HTC should be able to...
I did not like the results of the google edition camera...too bright and oversaturated...
Focal now in Beta in Google Play Store
For those interested, the recently removed Focal App from CM is now in Beta in the Play Store.
