Ok so after many years with this problem I found out what's the culprit. Whenever I get a new Android phone and sign in to my Gmail account it breaks wifi. If I don't sign in to my Gmail it works fine wether if I have Google location services and notify me of networks checked. I think the problem is Google itself restoring backed up wifi settings.
I guess when they made the wifi policy changes on ics from gb it broke wifi and a hard reset will fix it but if you sign in to Gmail it'll restore all your wifi history from the day you first opened up your Google account.. Is there a way I can wipe everything wifi related? Or better yet a way I can forward this to Google? Their help links just send you in circles :banghead:
Edit: Anyone knows why wifi sucks up more power than it did back in Gingerbread? Back then you could keep it on stay awake always and battery was great. After ics if your wifi is set to stay awake its a big battery drainer.. What changed?
Actually I remember ics brought the option to switch from 2.4ghz to 5ghz. I see that on Jellybean the option was removed so I guess both frequencies are on automatically at all times now.

I'm confused. What are you setting to never?
Also what do you mean by your wifi doesn't sleep? Like it doesn't turn off when the screen is off?

Keep wifi on during sleep set to never. Meaning your wifi goes to sleep when screen is off. It wasn't working properly for me.. Hasn't been since my E4GT days. Using the E4GT without signing in to my account is how I realized my google account had something to do with it. With no account it sleeps fine but the min I sign in it stops working then if I hard reset it's fixed. When you have it set to never you should see 3G activated when you turn screen on then wifi kicks back in automatically.

Define "a while". I had it open for two or three days straight before I closed it myself. It remained logged in the entire time and it used next to zero wake locks according to betterbatterystats.
Are you using a custom rom?
Check in Skype your settings. Menu-> settings-> go offline

Maybe it's not fully compatible with that kernel. Is there a way to find out if other Franco Kernel users are having the same problem? It could be one of those battery saving features that kills Skype when the screen is off.
Got my sgs3 Sunday and when I got home turned on WiFi and started playing with it I notice that I lose network for a second after about 15 mins and my WiFi icon on the status bar disappear but network comes back on .. but in settings it is greyed out and I can't turn it off then back on till I reboot 0_o...thought maybe after I rooted and flash AOKP it would be fixed but no! I'm on T-Mobile and AOKP..so is it a bad WiFi driver or...? Any ideas?
#*0011# press the menu key. Select wifi. uncheck wifi power saver mode. Its should be green when on black off. Make sure its not on and done go back to home screen. Your phone should reboot the wifi driver and your done.
This method works for 4.0.4 any of the roms. Cm10 doesn't work. Cm9 haven't tried but I'm sure it'll work for u.
Hit the thanks if I've helped!

Cuz if you are that's normal on every reboot you have to go back and turn it off again.

would the method above work for me? since yesterday, my wifi kept turning on by itself. After I turned the wifi off for like a couple minutes then it'll turn on automatically again. I have the Keep Wifi on during sleep set as "only when plugged in" and it never happen to be before until yesterday. My power saving in the setting menu has always been off too. Please help! :crying::crying:
Install the app called "Wifi Fixer" app to the solve the issue.
Whatever Google did to cause a variety of wakelock problems, having a strong wifi signal seems to solve them. Apparently, wakelocks occur when there are unreliable connections to Google's servers.

Seems like a work-around. I'll test, but still, it's a pain to have to turn wi-fi calling off and on to receive a MMS. Why wouldn't I just turn of wi-fi for the moment till the MMS comes thru?
You can do that too. But for many its good enough to be a fix... If you're like me and don't use wifi calling.
I know it sucks, but at least you'll know what's causing it. Maybe if enough people complain they'll fix it.
I've heard some 3rd party apps allow mms to send over wifi and therefore will work with wifi calling.
Tmobile only allows mms to send over data connection.

Are you sure? I get pix all the time at home and I'm showing 100% without signal. 0 bars but still the triangle. This is with Wi-Fi calling always on. Stock and xquizit.
Sometimes I do get the "data roaming" lost connection bs and lose Wi-Fi calling.

Similar thing happens to me. Wifi get stuck or conflict with Data signal.
I always turn Network Data off 1st, then turn WiFi on - once WiFi fully loaded => turn data on. That way it prevent wifi conflict. Works for me.

You might be partially right lol. There was a thread about turning mobile data off and that killed MMS over WiFi. All I know is that I'm able to send and receive MMS at home and I have no cell signal. There's no way the MMS are going through the cell tower. Technically speaking I do have some sort of signal. Even though it says no signal it's a blank triangle and not the circle with a line through it. It's enough to register with the network I guess...
I think I need sleep too. Turning WiFi off gave me the no signal circle. So iono wtf.
I know this has something to do with the custom ROM I'm using (Wicked V.5). I've never seen this issue, and I've been using Androids for 2 years. Even before I flashed Wicked, I had no issues on the same device on the same WiFi network.
Xquizit xD works fine for me.
FYI, for the 3rd update in a row Sprint enables Connection Optimizer by default. It is a HUGE battery drainer in the past, and maybe even more so in the JB release. Remember to go into..
Settings --> More Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Connections Optimizer
and uncheck.

But does it stick as disabled when you disable it? I had that problem in LI3 and I ended up freezing it with Titanium Backup.
You have to go to /system/app and delete or rename Connection Manager.apk.
Even if you disable it. It will be turned on again.

It is causing hell on my phone today. Keeps flipping out and flapping my WiFi connection. Just checked it in Better Battery Stats...yep, this is the third worst offender behind screen and media services. And Sprint pushed out a buggy update that won't let people turn it off...
With this and their incredibly stupid removal of Internet Calling, I can see LJ7 being pulled or a fast update being pushed out ASAP.

First off, a thousand apologies if there is already a post or thread regarding my issue. I could not find it.
After using ROM toolbox pro to uninstall sprint connections optimiser my WiFi still turns on pretty frequently by itself. Is there some other app I need to freeze or uninstall to keep this from happening?
I've looked in WiFi settings for an option to disable "notify me when networks are available" but couldn't find that.
