Power button pissing me off. What are my options - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

My power button has been on the fritz. My contract expires in sept and I do not want to stay with sprint and don't feel like getting a new phone at the moment.
What are my option to fix it or alternative roms I can load that use another button to unlock my phone.

Most aosp ROMs like cyanogen to AOKP will have a volume wake mod so you can use the volume rocker to wake the device.
Edit: hmmmmm . . thought I saw this within my current ROM (root box) but now cannot find it now. It was very common on my last device (nexus s 4g) so I would think it should be possible here too.

I took mine back to sprint and they are shipping me a new one (refurb probably) for free. This is the second time the power button has broken.

Try Gravity Screen Off. You don't have to touch the power botton. This is only if you use you power botton to wake up your phone.

Same here. Got my wife's ET4G replaced by Sprint last month due to the power button taking a dump.

I don't pay for insurance on this phone. I dont want to pay sprint any more money for this phone suck as a $35+ refurbished phone. a phone should be able to last more than 2 years without issue. The sprint store repair guy told me he never heard of this issue. At because at the time I brought the phone in the button wasn't acting up. Also he said that the fee was not $35 but greater. But I dont think he had a clue
There isn't any software way with root to trick use one of the volume buttons as the power switch and say make the power button act as a volume down action? Or another example is the screen turns on when headphones are plugged in. Is there a way to simulate that?

I am now running cm10.1 wild as the night and it does have the volume wake mod available. It is in /settings/display/Volume rocker wake
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2

Thanks I'm trying 10.1 right now. I'm liking the rom but the volume wake mod doesn't seem to be working for me. I can press the rocker for quite some time and the screen doesn't feel like waking back up.

I had this issue as well. I just took it apart and cleaned the power button. I don't pay for insurance either, and the sprint rep was a prick to me as well... I complained but by then I was too heated to care any longer. Just YouTube a vid and fix yourself. You are pretty much out of options unless you feel like paying a hefty little fee.

Try using the go to sleep option for quick settings to lock it. There's also an app called intellicover that uses the proximity sensor to lock and unlock it. My power button went out a few months ago and I had to work around it til I got a replacement

Try gravity screen off in the play store. You don't have to use the power button for nothing.

Thanks, or even better, i have a bad esn htc hero, i opened both phones and htc uses the same volume buttons for both phones or at least it appears to. Can i switch these easily, is it possible, whats my best bet
Yes, you can flash safely. ROM Manager is your best bet. you're going to want to get that fixed very soon, though. RM can't flash everything.

If there is no physical damage (i.e. scratches, dents, water damage) then it will be covered under warranty. take it to an Authorized Sprint Repair Center.
It's been opened and guy swapped with a perfect condition evo physical housing...I'm looking for a paid for repair or self repair

The volume button itself is simple to change, once you remove the six screws on the back and take it off it just pops right out, same with the power button.
No the plastic tabs on the metal clips on the motherboard...not the actual volume rocker

Request Dev help broke power button

My phone was bought off Craigslist and I can't afford a new phone my hardware power button got conductive oil inside of it now whenever pressed it acts like. Held and hard restarts, I found an app called any unlock or something like that on the market my problem is when my phone sleeps it kills the process and I cant wake it is there a Dev who can help me make this program start in foreground I read about it but am clueless so I could really use help also if anyone knows where I can order the hardware button part that would be killer cause I could pay a shop to do the circuit soldering, I use this as my work phone and am worried I as I need to invest 500 into tools for work this month and can't afford repair, also my phone is on boost so there is no warranty, I can not take it to sprint, thank you

That sounds good but with it is now I'm not sure I can get it into download or recovery, I can't remember the buttons off the top of my head, but if I can that sounds like a good temp solution, thanks ... do you know if there is a one click Odin for that and if I can just flash it over stock rooted el29 also if its ice based apn settings are an issue for me I need to be able to change them to boost mobiles, I contacted a store that does button soldering and replacement so I may give that a shot on Friday

I think CM 10.1 killed my GS-III

Since December I've been running CM10 on my GS-III with little to no issues. I flash CM 10.1 mid January and even though it was an unstable nightly it was very stable.
Flashing the nightlies as they became available with no issues at all.
Then today my phone starts slowing down and froze up.
Keep in mind that I hadn't flashed a nightly in like a day or 2 do I had been using the past nightly as a daily driver.
When my phone decided to freeze I rebooted it and it booted just fine.
About 2 minutes in the screen goes black. Holding the power button it's unresponsive.
Now my phone is completely unresponsive to all button presses. I've tried the 3 button combos for recovery and download mode with no luck. I've even held the buttons for a full minute but nothing is working.
Is my phone dead or is there a possibility of resurrecting it?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Are you positive the battery hasn't died. That would be the first thing I would check. Even if it showed it was charging doesn't mean the battery is good. I'm not trying to be insulting either by asking this. I'm a equipment tech at a large semiconductor company and you wouldn't believe the number of times the fix was as simple as turning a breaker back on when another tech wanted to replace something major. #1 rule of troubleshooting: Is there power. #2 rule: Double check rule #1. Sounds silly, but it is the easiest thing to overlook. Good luck and I hope it's as simple as a battery.

No you're not insulting by asking that. I use to record music and when something wasn't wasn't working that's the first thing we asked and re asked.
Unfortunately I do believe I checked that out. When I plug in a charger it doesn't even show me a battery charging logo.
I have noticed that when I pull out the battery and connect the charger the led turns red.
I'll see if i can't swap batteries with one of my friends and see if that helps.

I have tried the 3 button combos for T-Mobiles variant of the GS-III with no luck either.... I even tried making a jig and didn't have much luck....
Next step is to buy a jig and see if that works
Thankfully I got a replacement GS-III from insurance. So I'm content... Also since I get to keep the other GS-III as well it feels even nicer.

Now my next step is to attempt to hope that the jig will do something for my phone.

Flash STOCK or different ROM (Don't forget kernel too) think the issue is with the Cyanogenmod, mine did something similar, when screen went dark it took literally 5-10 Power button presses to wake the phone up, sometimes it wouldn't respond, other soft keys only would light up, Make backup, Wipe, install, check everything, that what I would do

The phone is dead. My friend's gs3 died suddenly one day while I just happen to be using it. I plugged in an otg plug and few minutes later the screen just went black. I was sure it was dead when I plug in a charger and there was no sign of life from the phone.
I don't know if you have to pay a deductible but Samsung is supposedly replacing galaxy s3 for free because there is a known defect which cause the motherboard to go bad. My friend's was a Verizon model and they just replaced it free.

Power button not working, replaced the button... still nothing

I bought the phone on Craigslist, knowing the button was broken. The phone itself was on, and worked fine while on CM10.1 (When you lose power, if you plug in to USB it will turn on automatically). Well I wanted to go back to stock so I did via recovery, and then afterwards realized that on stock, you have to press power button to turn the phone on.
So, I ordered a replacement button circuit, which cost about $4 shipped. Came in to day, popped it on, and... still not working.
Like I said I know the phone works, and this part SHOULD work since I just ordered it... When I plug the phone in it goes to the battery charging screen (Battery should be just about full anyway) and the power button does not get it to boot.
Might want to double check that ribbon cable that you had to plug in. When you replaced it! That's the only possible problem I could see it could be. Sometimes we rush to do things not realizing, we actually made a mistake!

The ribbon cable is a snap-in type, and I double checked/un/replugged it twice...
The only thing it could be is the circuit on the board I guess, but the rest of the board is fine...

I don't suppose there is any other crazy way I can at least turn the phone on? Any way at all? That doesn't require power button? I know with CM 10.1 you just have to plug it in with battery out and it starts boot up automatically but such is not the case with stock Samsung.
