I bought the phone on Craigslist, knowing the button was broken. The phone itself was on, and worked fine while on CM10.1 (When you lose power, if you plug in to USB it will turn on automatically). Well I wanted to go back to stock so I did via recovery, and then afterwards realized that on stock, you have to press power button to turn the phone on.
So, I ordered a replacement button circuit, which cost about $4 shipped. Came in to day, popped it on, and... still not working.
Like I said I know the phone works, and this part SHOULD work since I just ordered it... When I plug the phone in it goes to the battery charging screen (Battery should be just about full anyway) and the power button does not get it to boot.
Might want to double check that ribbon cable that you had to plug in. When you replaced it! That's the only possible problem I could see it could be. Sometimes we rush to do things not realizing, we actually made a mistake!

The ribbon cable is a snap-in type, and I double checked/un/replugged it twice...
The only thing it could be is the circuit on the board I guess, but the rest of the board is fine...
Aaaaah one of those types. Okay..Could just be a faulty board all together! I would have who ever your ordered it from send you out another one!
If they take returns??

It sucks because I've bought... 2 HTC Vivid's, an HTC One X, a Galaxy Note (original), a Sony Xperia Ion all off Craigslist without a problem. Then I get one of my "dream phones" (always wanted a Galaxy Note 2) and this happens...
I don't suppose there is any other crazy way I can at least turn the phone on? Any way at all? That doesn't require power button? I know with CM 10.1 you just have to plug it in with battery out and it starts boot up automatically but such is not the case with stock Samsung.

I just figured... I could use a jig to kick it in to ODIN mode then just cancel ODIN mode and it would boot in to OS.
I guess if nothing else I can sell it on Craigslist as such - power button doesn't work, as-is..
Sorry. ...
Bad luck for sure. ..
But a new power button assembly should do the trick. .
They are of course different between models. ..and you may have been sold the wrong one ..
Likely a pin out connection problem. ..
Good luck to you. ..g

As a last resort try a USB jig. I wouldn't mod a Samsung without one.
There are several OG Epic tricks you can try. Try removing battery and SD card and plug phone in to PC and see if it powers to download mode.

I had the EXACT some problem last week. I went to the repair center, said the phone was plugged in at work, we had a power surge, and afterwords the phone wouldn't turn on. An hour later...BOOM, new phone
I then went on amazon and purchased a usb jig and kept my phone stock until it came. lol
Every rooted owner should spend the 2 bucks on a USB jig. It's not the holy grail, but it's one more tool in your belt to potentially get out of a frustrating and time consuming situation.
I bought mine from here and got it pretty quickly considering where it came from ...

I forgot to mention letting it sit when I mentioned this to someone else (or was it here?) about pulling battery and SD card. Also repeatedly press or hold power button with those out to purge any remaining juice in the phone. This stuff sounds crazy but ask any former OG Epic owner.. some of these tricks have brought phones back from the dead. There isn't a pinhole under the battery cover below the camera is there?
That last part was an OG Epic inside joke but the rest is worth trying

Hi,
I just bought a Pebble Blue S3 from craigslist without checking it out properly. (I know, shame on me). The phone is in physically mint condition, the water damage tab is not red and there are no signs of dropping.
The phone's screen does NOT turn on. When I hold the power button to have it load up normally, I can hear the T-mobile jingle and then a constant blue indicator would stay on the top left corner.
I have tried flashing it back to stock through download mode (Power, volume down, and home --> volume up mode) and it seems to make no difference to the screen's issue.
Flashing it back to stock might have made it worse because I can't even access the phone's internal memory through USB anymore.
Any help towards fixing my screen would be great!
Thanks.
So out of curiosity how much did you pay for a phone that you did not check to see if it turned on?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I paid $250 for it, came with original box and accessories. I thought it was too good to be true, and it seems that way. At worse I can probably break even and sell it as-is.
Is the battery low?

What does windows report it as in device manager?
If you can get to download mode it may not be hard bricked.
You could flash twrp recovery with idin, then boot recovery and try flashing something from thrre.
Also twrp has a builtin file manager so you can try to see if you can find sny problems that way. (Look for logfiles)
Are you sure its an SGH-T999?

I was able to access download mode by clicking around in the dark.
Positive it is a SGH-T999, before I flashed the stock PDA in ODIN, Windows Device manager would list that. How do I flash TWRP? Do I need the screen to do it?
Oh the battery is fully charged.

Here is the thread for TWRP. But you get to download mode by starting with the device completely powered off, then pressing the volume down, home and power button at the same time until it powers on. I dont understand what you meant by "I was able to access download mode by clicking around in the dark"
Button mashing I guess?
And just fyi, to boot recovery from power off
Hold volume up, home and power. When you see blue text flash on top of the screen release.
Also, flashing recovery in Odin will trip the flash counter. Prob doesn't matter considering the situation, but just so you know.

If you can get the phone in download mode, odin back to stock. Then boot into recovery using power +home + vol up and do a factory reset. This step is important. I borked my phone with a bad jb install and using odin on its own doesnt completely reset the phone. Using the factory reset fixed this in my situation

By saying I'm able to access recovery mode, I got in by basically doing the sequence of buttons, without seeing any display on the screen. I know it is in download mode because it reads on ODIN.
No matter what I click or what mode it is in, the screen is still completely off. Sorry for the confusion.

I've had Samsung service my SGS1 that I bought off Kijiji while it was still within its one-year warranty. It doesn't just apply to the original owner, just call them and tell them it was a gift, they'll ask for the phone's IMEI, and then they'll be able to tell if it is still within its warranty period.

Since December I've been running CM10 on my GS-III with little to no issues. I flash CM 10.1 mid January and even though it was an unstable nightly it was very stable.
Flashing the nightlies as they became available with no issues at all.
Then today my phone starts slowing down and froze up.
Keep in mind that I hadn't flashed a nightly in like a day or 2 do I had been using the past nightly as a daily driver.
When my phone decided to freeze I rebooted it and it booted just fine.
About 2 minutes in the screen goes black. Holding the power button it's unresponsive.
Now my phone is completely unresponsive to all button presses. I've tried the 3 button combos for recovery and download mode with no luck. I've even held the buttons for a full minute but nothing is working.
Is my phone dead or is there a possibility of resurrecting it?

Are you positive the battery hasn't died. That would be the first thing I would check. Even if it showed it was charging doesn't mean the battery is good. I'm not trying to be insulting either by asking this. I'm a equipment tech at a large semiconductor company and you wouldn't believe the number of times the fix was as simple as turning a breaker back on when another tech wanted to replace something major. #1 rule of troubleshooting: Is there power. #2 rule: Double check rule #1. Sounds silly, but it is the easiest thing to overlook. Good luck and I hope it's as simple as a battery.

No you're not insulting by asking that. I use to record music and when something wasn't wasn't working that's the first thing we asked and re asked.

I have noticed that when I pull out the battery and connect the charger the led turns red.

My kindle's usb port is broken so I am getting a new kindle sent by amazon. I was rooted but did a factory reset and since the usb port is broke, there is no way to charge it so I thought I'd let it get to 0% charge and then be good. But I cannot do this because the TWRP screen pops up saying battery low (at 2%) and then shuts off my device. It does this everytime I press the power button. Do you think amazon will ask for their replacement back? Is there anything I can do to get rid of this screen seeing as the usb port is broke?
Thanks so much for any help!
Good question. I'm about to find out the same thing. They said if I ended up getting charged then I would be contacted first. They'll probably just reflash the stock software after fixing the port.

I was all set to return it when I found this solution in a help discussion thread. Took mine about 2 and a half minutes but it turned on.

I tried it with both volume up and down and still nothing?? Do you know if its common for things like this to happen or other problems occurring when a system reboot on twrp is done?
Did you do all three at the same time? That and the amount of time that you keep them pressed is the key here. Supposedly it resets the battery. No idea about the TWRP angle.

Yea i just tried both of em at the same time still nothing, ill keep trying though. And also im awake that rooting a phone voids the warranty but if im not able to even turn on the phone my provider most likely cannot either so do you think I could go get a new one if this problem persists??
If you're going to take it into a store, I'd think you're chances are pretty good that they'll give you a new one. Provided ,of course, that it's within whatever the return period is.

I just want to clear something up, forgive me if this seems redundant, but...
"Both" generally implies 2. Did you press all *3* buttons at the same time for at least 5 minutes? Power, volume up, and volume down?

phone wont charge or turn on.
Hi,
I am having the same problem with my new HTC ONE. The phone ran out of battery so died, but wouldn't charge again - the charge light didnt come on, and so it won't turn on anymore. I didn't use twrp.
However I sent it to HTC Repair as they said it can be fixed under warranty and they sent it back to me in 10 days but it still didn't work. So I called up and they said send it to them again and now they said its a damage not under warranty. So they want £264 for repair! or £26 to return it. What should I do?
Is there any chance they'll fix it for free or shall I just pay £26 and try get it fixed elsewhere? I read online about how awful the customer service for the repair centre is but now its too late, they may have already purposely damaged my phone :'( I am so sad
