Hi All!
I bought the Optimus G a few weeks ago, and after 3 returns to Best Buy, I thought I would ask the question.
The phone is running about 90-94 degrees if I have it on for 10 or so minutes with the screen on (whether calling, or any other process). With the screen off I'm getting about 80 degrees while listening to Pandora (which is good... I was looking at 95 degrees with the other two phones). The real kicker is while I'm playing a game like Angry Birds for 10 minutes I'm getting temperatures around 100-105 degrees F.
Per discussion with LG, the temperature should not be exceeding 113 degrees. I haven't played Angry Birds for a long enough period of time to see the effect on the heat. I believe my screen dim is happening around 90 degrees F.
Is this the normal operating temperature for everyone? I've decided I can live with the dimming effect as long as my phone doesn't die on me.
Thanks,
B

What software are you on? Are you rooted and unlocked? If so, flash Liberty-Evolved kernel and that will greatly lower the heat. I have almost no heat with the newest Liberty-Evolved kernel.

Thanks for the quick response!
I've been trying to convince myself to root my phone since I got it... Maybe this will be the reason to do it... I'm still on my 15 day return period with Best Buy, so I figured I would just return it if it overheated again.
I'm running ZVB locked and unrooted.
Give root and unlocking a chance. It makes a big difference.

I'm trying to figure out if the heat levels I'm getting are the norm...after heavy gaming like, arcane legends I'm usually around 115°F...
Is that excessively high or about the average for gamming???
OG PRO
Does your screen dim when you reach that temperature level?
A little, at around 110°F-115°F it might drop from 100% to about 85 or 90%...

What app are you guys using to get your temps. Does it give core or gpu or battery temperature? Thanks in advance
So I played avengers for about 45 minutes, all I could take of it lol. my temp got up to 94º F in antutu temp monitor and very quickly returned to normal afterwards. The case was slightly warm but not uncomfortable. I have a screen protector but no case atm (in the mail). Not sure how much that will affect temperatures. So 94 is not uncommon after gaming on phones. Quad Core control was disabled in battery settings when I played as well. And the room temp is around 71. I was not charging while playing. I suspect that would raise temps a lot as this phones rapid charge creates heat. What were your conditions while your temp was so high?

------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
Dear Eric,
Thank you for contacting LG Electronics US. I will gladly assist you.
While browsing and gaming your battery life will be drained faster and will need to demand more energy from the device which is usual since a mobile device is not built in with a fan to cool the internal hardware and processor. In these cases you must remove the battery and leave it out for a couple of seconds however these overheating issues will still be concerning you as I stated this will happen when the device needs more energy for certain functions as the ones previously mentioned.
If you do have concerns you are able to send your device in for repair and only pay for shipment. We will inspect the device and repair it free of charge if it is covered by the warranty.
I hope this information is helpful, please do not hesitate to contact us back if you have any other inquiry. I will gladly assist you. Please enjoy the rest of the day and I wish you the best!
Respectfully,
Aimee H.

Argg!
I was playing a game on my G3 (UK 16GB) and it got SUPER hot!
It turned off and now will not turn back on. It's stuck on the LG initial splash screen.
I've done all the usual (remove battery, power + volume down, recharge battery etc) but I'm stuck.
Any suggestions before I return it today?

Has the phone called back down yet?
Don't try to turn it on until its cooled down.
Take the battery out and leave the back door off for half hour then try again.
Just so we know, did you turn Thermal Throttling off in the hidden menu? If so, this is a prime example of why I have been telling people not to do this.

Hey Lenny,
I didn't turn Thermal Throttling off. And I would also advise people to not do that.
I've just returned from CPW with a brand new handset! FYI the 28 day replacement policy starts from the day you receive the phone so I was still covered. Just!
I did all the things you suggest. It was stone cold and it still wouldn't get past the LG boot screen. Also the little sparkly animation on the LG letters wasn't playing which suggests it borks out very early on in the boot sequence.
I really hope we don't start to see this more.
Fingers crossed!

alright now im starting to worry frying my device. Last time i ran antutu battery test it runs hot. The highest temp that i got is 41.8c on battery temp. It normally runs at 34 to 36 if im playing with it but wont go over 40.. Do you think my device is also running too hot?

Thats cool,my G3s ran Antutu at 60+deg C and idled at 45-58. Your temps make me wonder if i had faulty units (i had 2 as the first one had a fault).
Edit, just read you said battery temp? You need to measure CPU temp not battery.

Hi!
Yesterday purchased HTC One M9 and I recognized that it's way too much overheating than my old one Samsung Note2.
It's normal that after browsing on the web I can't handle it normally in my hand?
Battery temperature being 37-40 celcius. But all device is way too hot.
What is your experience?
Thanks,
Domas
Not that I had problem with it
I know it is hot.... Remember the body is aluminium which generate heat more than Sammy phone. It's not gonna melt anything but kinda annoying. Try a case and battery cooling app from playstore. It helps a bit

do the OTA update .. the firmware it ships with is Beta and runs hotter than normal
It's not beta, it has higher cpu clock 2,0 GHz that's the difference. And it throttles faster. The new one has 1,6 GHz. And it isn't getting that hot ?
I did the ota update and mine hasn't gotten hit since .js

Mine doesn't get hot on normal use or watch videos. But it get hot when I have a lot of apps to update. But, it cools down after and not very often I have that many apps update at once.
Mine gets warm even under normal usage. It gets very warm using sat nav or anything intensive.
Mine got to 51c during a backup: extremely hot!
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Mine gets very warm when running Google Navigation or connecting to HTC's very own RE camera. However, neither these are new since I have the same problem with the m7. I use a car vent mount in the car when using Navigation to cool down the phone at the same time.
Mine gets very hot under regular usage, up to 45-50 degrees.
I'm on firmware 1.36.709.3
Can you post your firmware versions?
Thank you all.
I'm on latest firmware .33 and mine has gotten as high at 175*F. I put it right in my freezer which is at 23*F and it cooled in 10 minutes down to 32*F and warmed back up to a normal temp.
My firmware is 1.32.401.17
It gets hot under stress, other then that it gives off normal warmth
Thank you.
Anyone knows what is the latest firmware? and the one supposed to take care of the overheating issue?
Mine overheats a lot while on charge and heavy use when I have screen on for an hour or more
I started another thread that has yielded zero useful information so I thought I would be very explicit this time about what I am looking for. I'm trying to figure out if I should RMA my device or not. My device is currently 98F in a 70F room and I'm doing nothing but typing this message. This seems like a high temperature to me but for all I know it's normal for this device. If other people who use battery monitor apps that include device temperature readings could let me know what temp their Pixel XL is operating at I would appreciate it and it will help me decide whether I should RMA this device or not. Thanks in advance if anyone actually responds with useful information.

That's the same temp as mine after conversion. Maybe that's a normal temp for this phone. Thanks for the response!
The Pixel is designed really differently than my previous phones so I'm having trouble figuring out what is normal on a Pixel. The CPU frequencies that this phone operates at would result in a significant performance lag on my previous phone, for example, but with the Pixel they result in the phone running very smooth and fast.
I have not messed with my frequencies, I'm running OctOS with the Elemental kernel at whatever it ships at.
so I went ahead and let my phone sit in my center console on my way home. for some reason the sun cooks this area of my truck and it's hot to touch even with the AC. After my trip home in 103F weather it was at 42C and did not shut down (I was streaming music over bluetooth from amazon music)
Idle : 30 - 35 C (phone goes below 30 C only when not used for more than 15-20 mins in a very cool room).
Medium Load: 35-40 C
Charging in the car, Charging while using Chrome etc: 40-44 C
Heavy Load: 42-48 C
I have owned Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 6p previously. This phone definitely runs hotter than all of them.
I got a replacement from Google, but it is the same problem.

I don't have air conditioning in my car, it was very hot outside, the phone was sitting in a cradle in direct sunlight and I was using the car charger, GPS and Spotify all at the same time--so it's possible my phone got much hotter than 42C when it did shut down. But I used my Nexus 6P and Samsung Galaxy S3 and S6 under identical circumstances and none of them ever overheated and shut down. They also didn't run anywhere near as hot as the Pixel XL when idle. My phone is generally 90-100F in an air conditioned apartment when I'm doing absolutely nothing with it--and multiple people have responded with similar temps for their own phones. If the idle temp for the phone is that high it's going to get super hot when using it under more demanding circumstances.

No problem. Have you observed higher battery drain when the CPU heats up? I'm not sure phones are meant to be that hot. I haven't seen any other flagship heating up so much.

Yes, mine get to 100-105 F range quickly on battery temperature.
Yesterday I had the following youtube, whatsapp, Browser and Gmail - I was switching back and forth and the phone was on 43 C (110 F), (granted I had 1080p video on and was chatting to a friend as well and responding to emails).. I had to then clear all apps and stop using the phone to allow it to cool down. The CPU temperature was over 58 C (measured using elemental X kernal with root access).
Something is wrong with either the 2 NEW Pixel XL phones that Google has provided me OR with the Pixel XL phone in general. There has to be a hardware problem. Maybe some phones are worse than others? Maybe it is a quality control issue?

Thank you. EXKM will put a persistent notification.
I would be very interested to know what your temperatures are under mid-heavy load : both the battery temp and CPU temp.
It's basic knowledge that heat destroys processors and other circuits. I have to use coolers and thermal paste etc in my home computer when it gets too hot. I can't see why it would be different for a phone.

The phone is known to get very hot with Daydream. I'm more concerned with how hot the phone gets under normal operating conditions. My battery goes from 80F to 100F in seconds if I do anything as light as surfing the Internet, reading my email, browsing the XDA app or using the EBay app. 100F seems to be the base temperature of my battery if I am using the phone for anything. I suspect that Google knows these phones won't last more than a couple years. I'm not sure if I should wait to find out or just get rid of this thing while it still works. At least in the Nexus phones you had the option of flashing a custom kernel and changing the governor so the phone would run cooler. You can't do that with the Pixel--the phone runs at the same temps or even worse on a custom kernel. I already tried. I've never owned one but I'm curious if the Pixel XL runs significantly warmer than an iPhone. Or for that matter a flagship Samsung phone--other than the one that blew up, obviously.

So XDA went ahead and showed what the surface temp of their pixel is under their tests
http://www.buildcomputers.net/cpu-temperature.html
I thought the temp of the cpu temp was high, but compared to other processors this is pretty average/on the low side
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/archive/lithium_ion_safety_concerns
Turns out that's no where near as hot as it would need to be to be a safety issue for any of us.
http://bgr.com/2017/01/23/galaxy-note-7-battery-investigation/
if you're concerned why samsung exploded while ours hasn't, they have a good explanation about the construction of those batteries being flawed.

I'm not concerned with safety. I'm sure the Pixel is perfectly safe. I'm concerned this phone is going to eventually bootloop like the Nexus 6P, the Nexus 5X and multiple LG phones. I'm not one of those people who wants to have the latest of everything and if I spend a small fortune on something I actually want it to last for a long time. I do appreciate the links you provided and will look at the info later. Thanks.
