Are you on a ROM other than stock? Aokp based ROMs added permission management in the settings now
pardon noobish question but... how ?
i really dont think i can do that with paranoid :\
Well, you pretty much answered your own question. You have to flash an AOKP ROM to get that feature. If you search the play store for permission manager I'm sure there's a couple apps you can try.

If you use rom manager you can stop any app asking for dubious permission/ s
Stock roms even so long as you are rooted. Good way to save battery as you can turn apps radio access off.some have 5,6,...radio's....

i think i've found a good solution
im trying AFWall+ free on google play or dropbox apk here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957231
just installed and tested something, seems to work, it's only a firewall, so i can't deny all permissions, but i think is enough for me.
i gave a look at some apps on google play but according to some comments they may not work sometimes so...
btw thx you all for help

Just installed Energy 1.11.2012 on my EVO 4G, and I was wondering if someone could tell me which apps I can uninstall from this ROM. I am talking about the apps that say you can't uninstall them like freidnstream and FB chat and stocks... I was thinking maybe another app could go under it and get rid of them.
Also, since I can't post in dev forums yet, maybe somebody knows if I can change the overall color/swipe away notifications 1 at a time like CM.
Lastly, is the stock kernel in this ROM good enough, or should I be running a different kernel?
All/any responses/links to answer posts would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,

You should be able to uninstall any apps you like. Just take the ROM zip and unzip, then go into the \data\app folder and remove what you do not want. After which, you can re-zip and then flash.
Kernel is one which chef/dev decided to use, should be good enough. You can always try flashing a different one for different results, better though?
Not familiar with CM. Maybe a theme might help for your other inquiry.
Good luck.

Root Explorer can remove any app. Just be careful about what you delete, some apps are essential for the rom to run properly.
Every time I pull up my task manager to close out apps I find Google maps running even though I never opened it.
Is it triggered by another app, like Facebook possibly?
Er sorry, I thought I was in the Q&A forum. If one of the mods want to move this I'd appreciate it.
Download Autostarts from the Play store. You can prevent anything and everything from running on its own. One of the best root apps out there. It will also show you what the triggers are that cause it to start up.

It may depending on the app. It would be easier to just freeze apps that you don't need or use. If you get an error because of a dependency, it's usually far easier to defrost the app than to reinstall it (especially if it is categorized as a system app).

I think I'd prefer that option although I realize re-installing Maps wouldn't exactly be a hassle. It isn't really eating up battery or getting in the way I just wondered why it was always there when I knew I hadn't manually opened it.
Thanks for chiming in, the more I learn the better I enjoy my phone.
first of all i love this forum SO much!
I have flashed different roms to find the one i like and im currently pretty content with leedroid (even though im not sure if a non sense rom would save more battery)... the thing is, i used miui for a while and loved the fact that it always asks you if you want an app to do a certain action like sending sms and making calls... im pretty paranoid about it and miui made me feel very safe. my question would be; is there a way to have this on other roms? i know Superuser asks you if you grant root access, but i couldnt find anything for sms and calls
thanks for your help, in advance
ps: this is what im talking about
Permissions Manager
The Permissions Manager is split into three sections, root permissions, permissions, and auto-start
Upon installation of an apk off your sdcard, you get asked to grant individual permissions, set "I trust this app," or the default setting will ask you as the app asks for each permission.

i want the feature "ask you as the app asks for each permission" but outside of MIUI
i guess i just want the MIUI permissions manager outside MIUI, or at least something that does the same job
-----------------------------------------------------
alright it seems i have found what im looking for. its the LBE Privacy Guard app, which apparently is the one integrated into MIUI
so... i guess i would say the thread can be marked as SOLVED
rom security.

thank you. im aware of that. but say i install an apk that needs permission to send sms because of a store inside the app where you can buy items by sms; miui would ask me if its ok for it to send an sms right when the app tries to send an sms. i know that i can remove certain permissions after installing the app, but many apps stop functioning when you use this method

If you are really worried about security then MIUI is not the best rom for that.
sounds like over paranoia tbh
go to the general android forum and there is something called pdroid which depending on which ROM you have, will block apps from transmitting personal info such as IMEI numbers etc
MIUI isn't 'safe' just because it prompts you
personally it sounds like an annoying feature, much like user access control on Windows Vista (ignoring the fact that Vista was a poor attempt at an OS in its own right)

Guys, please. The point of my thread is NOT whether the root claim is a lie or not. I am asking some questions about what can be done with it regardless, so please, if anyone knows inform me, but don't post guessing games of whether it is real or not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?
Thanks!
There's safe strap which allows us to have custom roms.

did they get a safestrap to work?
I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.
We have root?
what proof?
Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.
Where is root?
Root has not been proven yet. Patience. Everyone is jumping the gun here.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....
There are also a few apps I would delete or freeze with Titanium Backup once we had that option... Turning them off is nice but I want the space back...

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

Ooh multi-window on almost any app sounds awesome!
you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.

I had no idea that existed or was possible without root. Great find!
Hi!
Im currently using a Z1C with the MX Rom 8.50 (awesome rom btw). After years of using Cyanogenmod I wanted to give the stock firmware a try, and the MX Rom seemed to be even better, as it is based on stock but with additional functionality.
But what I am missing from CM: the possibility of cutting permissions of specific apps, even system apps. Because I dont want to give all my data to every app I have on my phone. With Cyanogenmod I even blocked the google play services and several other google system apps with that.
Is it possible to get this done by app, or is it somehow exclusive to Cyanogenmod and some other AOSP-based roms?
The MX Rom comes pre rooted with Super SU (but I think the most of you people alredy know that, haha).
Regards
Don't know this ROM myself, but you should be able to install the Xposed framework and use Xprivacy with it. Despite using CM myself, I still use it because it gives you a much more detailed control and apps don't force quit when some permissions are withdrawn.
Wow, thank you. I dont know much about the Xposed Framework as I never used it before (didnt even know that it exists before I used the MX Rom, because there it is already preinstalled).
Xprivacy seems to be pretty awesome, thank you for this!
Xprivacy is great, although it seems that the dev has abandoned it for his other project netguard (no-root firewall) and no, apps WILL fc if you don't know what you're doing..

Yes sure, especially when taking away some of the "red" marked ones. But I was referring to some of the more "standard" permissions, since Xprivacy instead just uses fake data rather than just plain revoking the permission.
