USB or battery dead? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Been having trouble with my arc recently. It wont charge when connected to the cable.
I've tried 3 different USB cables, 2 different wall plugs, 2 different portable chargers and even the USB ports on my computer, and the plugs in school. I find that i take ages to connect the phone properly to charge and sometimes it'll disconnect halfway.
Now for some reason even though i left my phone plugged in, it refused to charge and the battery got completely drained, now its just looping between showing slowly flashing red and solid red light (low battery level charging).
So is this a problem with the battery or the USB port? If it indeed is a hardware fault (i do not have enough battery to flash stock yet, and no spare batteries t use), since my warranty is over, is it cheaper if i bring it into Sony or a 3rd party street repair shop?

Battery is dead ,, buy a new one .. My mother had the same problem on her x10i and new battery solved the issue
Sent from my MT15i using xda app-developers app

Using an x10 now with the same problem previously ...lol... tthat was a cable issue.
Anyway I know a person who owns an arc rtoo, will try to charge my battery on his phone.
Meanwhile my own arc is still flashing red led eevery 2 seconds.
edit : forgot to say that the last time I charged it, the top right hand (where all the internals are) got unusually hot... and I didn't have any problem with the battery previously.

i had the same problem with my Arc S, just need to buy a new battery and the problem will be solved

UPDATE:
Just bought a new battery and it charged from 43% to 37%. I am flashing stock now to see if the problem persists.
Otherwise it's a trip down to the service centre to fix the circuitry perhaps... because my microUSB port works. Also, when I start my phone the top right hand corner where all the components are starts to heat up, but when I look in performance menu nothing is abnormal (processor is normal, I use 364/1400 smartassh3 sio).
EDIT: I am unable to flash stock because as soon as i connect my phone in flashmode the green light flashes for a split second, goes off, and the phone boots.
EDIT 2: I cannot go into fastboot either, same scenario with flashmode except blue LED.
EDIT 3: Just tried another microUSB cable with same result. It's not the drivers problem because I've tried both my computers, and I just flashed a ROM on my x10 yesterday. Also, I noticed that when I try to enter flashmode, after the phone disconnects, it boots into fusion kernel, then just switches off without boooting into ROM. And for some other reason, the battery is at 39% now, after a restart.

Nexus thinks its being charged

I've had my nexus since November and its been working fine. I upgraded to 4.0.2 about 2 weeks ago when it was pushed to my phone.
Last night, my phone ran down the battery, even while in airplane mode. I've found that it keeps waking itself and it thinks its being charged. The battery icon has the charge icon on now, even though its not plugged in.
Anyone else had this problem? I've tried power off and re-seating the battery, but still the same problem.
Unlock, root, then flash custom rom, can almost guarantee it will fix your problem

Had the same problem couple days ago. Plugging and then unplugging from the charger fixed the icon.
Mabey the new update added the "self charging" feature.. It's defiantly the future but I think it's still in beta testing... Luckily you were one of the few that got the feature! Hehe...
I just like the title to this thread makes it seam like your phone is alive and confused with what's going on lol poor guy .

i had this problem this morning. Screen kept coming on and showing the chargin icon over the battery and on the lock screen and kept waking the device!
I plugged the charger in and out a few times and that seemed to stop it for a few hours. Since then i have flashed the latest build of AOKP and havent had the issue yet... I'll wait and see if it returns now i've said that!
That does sound similar. I plugged in my charger at work and it worked OK for a while, but the problem has returned
You are having this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21840063#post21840063
.. and you are not alone.
It's a hardware problem, and you should RMA your phone or change the USB charging board.
I had the same problem, and temporarilly fixed it several times with unplugging rapidly, half-way insterted plug, toothpick to pick on the USB pinns.. It sometimes worked, but after a while it was permanently broken. I fixed it by changing the USB charging board.. this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150713366355
I had this same issue on the Galaxy S 2. Simple replacement there. Should be same here

I'm having a similar problem with my Galaxy Nexus. The problem comes and goes. Sometimes the problem persists for a few days and then goes away for some time.
My experience:
The phone sometimes thinks it's charging when it's not.
Sometimes it thinks I'm janking the charger out and plugging it in non-stop. (the screen lights up a second after I turn it off. And this can go on for hours).
Either way, I can't charge it.
Things I've noticed:
When plugging it in to a computer it sometimes recognices it as a USB device and the phone also recognices that it had been plugged in, but it wont charge.
Plugging the charger in and out rapidly many times sometimes cause it to start charging for real.
The built-in charging-icon and the 3rd party icon from "Battery indicator" (by Darshan Computing, LCC) don't alway show that it's charging at the same time (could be a problem in the 3rd party app, or a problem in the system).
Rebooting the phone may sometimes cause the battery percentage to show a different value than before reboot.
I've been having this problem since I got the phone. Neither updates nor factory resets has made a difference.
I haven't tried rooting it and installing a custom ROM, and I wont, since I will get a repair/replacement on the warranty.
Either send it in for repair or get a small knife, put it in the charger port under the pin and very gently push down so it moves the pin by a fraction of a mm. This worked for me and was caused by a cheap charging dock from eBay, I fixed and replicated the problem so I know this to be true

Galaxy Nexus not charging !!

My gnex is not charging..i plug in and the battery symbol doesnt show charging..when i check battery in settings it shows not charging instead of discharging.
Another thing is that if i switch it off and plug in the white charging symbol occurs but after an hour when i switch on the battery is at the same percentage..

Have had a charging issue as well, and solved it.
Hey there,
my SGN was not charging at all not even when turned off, started two days ago, the first evening it was only charging on one out of my three USB cables (each cable has its own wall charger).
Also my PC with "Win 8 Pro" was not recognizing my phone at all.
My first try was a bit stupid, but it worked, well for one day only. I bite on the USB cable, so the part that goes in the phone was a bit deformed, and the SGN was charging again. \o/
Next evening, I had the same problem again, but this time, non of my three cables was able to charge, even after further deforming tries.
My final solution was to use a needle, stick it in the USB port on the phone and bend the small "tongue" a bit up, so it was exactly in the middle.
My Phone was off and the battery removed. I put all together again and plugged the USB cable back in, it started charging while off.
Then I just turned it on, after booting was almost done, my PC told me that my SGN is connected and it was still charging.
I removed the cable, plugged it back in, several times, also on all three charger with its cables, finally my problem seems to be resolved.
btw. My SGN is from November 2011, so one of the first here in Europe.
I hope this can help some other with the same problem.
Kind Regards from Germany,

I had the same problem, GNex quit charging. Fixed it by using a toothpick to gently move the "tongue" in the USB port up towards the LED (screen side). I used a wooden toothpick as I didn't know what would happen if the connectors shorted using something metal.
Apparently, moving the USB plug around when it is in the port can move things out of alignment. Very easy fix, takes less than one minute. You could use a plastic pen cap or whatever you have lying around as a tool.
If you are under warranty, you could always ask for a replacement.
I had this problem a while back, first only some chargers would work and finally none of my chargers worked. In my case it seems like the problem was pocket lint tightly packed at the back of the usb port. The lint was grey and so tightly packed that I couldn't see any thing wrong. I used a fine tooth pick and got a good size wad out and the charging problem was solved. I always thought that the lint prevented the usb cable to be fully seated but maybe I bent the "lip" while trying to get the lint out

Well, I've left my phone on charge with the adapter charger and it was recharged. Now it seems to work also through usb
I got a new Gnex today because of this same issue. It would randomly not charge no matter what charger is was using. What's weird though is I never had an issue transferring files to my Mac and vice versa.

Thought that was lint but in my case even removing the lint it wont charge CORRECTLY -- with the original charger (it was uncharging after some movement).
Then I realize that forcing the usb plug to go more inside the USB port it works. What I did: Removed the black protection because it block the plug to go more inside the phone port. It's now metalic (lol) but not a problem of charging anymore.
I'd buy some heat shrink tubing for that before you cause a fire .

Unfortunately, all that really does is shorten the battery's life. There is no benefit to forcing it to that feel good display of 100%.

Here's my full experience with my Galaxy Nexus charging problem --
I bought this one eBay, came with 4.1.2. Didn't even test charging before I updated it to stock 4.2.2 and rooted it, so I'm not sure if the problem developed after my software update, or if it always had that problem. The eBayer said he didn't know anything about it. I'm on stock rooted 4.3 now, and the problem persists.
The phone has never charged on any of the several AC adapters I've tried. These have been between 250ma and 1A, and they wouldn't work whether the phone was on or off. It would consistently charge when connected to my desktop computer, but that all changed a few weeks ago when I changed out my computer's power supply. Now, the only one trick I've found is to turn on WiFi, BT, GPS, and put the screen at 100% brightness, then plug connect my computer's USB cable, and it will go into charging mode about 35-50% of the time. This works OK, but one extra annoying bit is that when the battery reaches 100%, it stops charging, and won't start again until I do my little trick and replug the USB.
I tried replacing the USB port, but that didn't fix anything. As far as I can tell, that's the only part that can be easily replaced by a normal person. I'm basically managing this by swapping in batteries charged by an external charger.
Got major issue all of sudden and phone won't start anymore
I have been tweaking with my phone customizing it for like one year and didn't had any problem. I flashed with KitKat gummy ROM and then reverted back to 4.3 stock jellybean using ROM manager installed previous saved 4.3 stock rooted ROM.
Further installed clean master and did some advanced cleaning of cache files. WELL after reverting back I started witnessing some major flaws with battery charging status earlier with KitKat I wasn't using any battery saver app but after reverting back to 4.3 I installed DU battery saver and it would like take ages to charge my battery like 7-8 hrs but I wasn't paying much attention to this. I did some advanced cleaning with clean master, but anyways that won't clean any system files that would hinder the functionality of phone right?Problem started cropping up as I detached my power cable without switching off the supply ( even though I had done this previously many times before) , phone flickered/froze and switched off and won't start without external power supply even though i had 57% battery charge that too showed random status, sometimes 0% and sometimes 50+ %. This went looping for sometime then like it won't switch on even with power supply, just showing for a sec the battery symbol with bolt sign when the charging cable is inserted and going blank within 5 sec . It would show the battery icon sometimes and sometimes no sign just plain blank..
Well I tried different ways as suggested like pushing the small tongue inside USB to middle or attaching to laptop w/o battery and putting back n starting but all in vain, no response.
I am not sure any major fault has cropped in the charging circuit or is the phone bricked? Battery dead?
Guys do give some suggestions.. I have been charging using diff usb cables, no response but just that battery symbol for 5sec n going blank..even though i have been charging the phone is getting heated..but does that imply anything?
do provide some insights guys
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Note2 not charging, connect(ed) to PC.

Hi,
Yesterday my new (~2 months old) Note2 stopped charging. tried 2 different chargers, 2 different cables connected to PC. No reaction (no beeps, no led, battery icon not changed to flash).
Tried removing and putting the battery back in. No change.
On the other hand, when connected to the PC, the PC identified the connection and allowed file transfer. Later the battery died completly. I succeeded in booting to download mode, and again PC identified the USB device.
Switching the phone on with no battery gave no results either (would not turn on).
This leads me to a conclusion that the USB port is probably OK. Could it just be a dead battery? (according to its label, the battery was made on Nov 29th, 2012).
I will be able to switch battery tomorrow with another Note 2. Anything else I can try till then?
Using custom recovery and stock rom.
Thanks in advance,
Idan

Yeah, with or without battery... no reaction from the phone.
Have you tried a lower powered device to see if that works? Some usb ports don't have full power output, as some laptops portray.

I've tried 2 USB ports on a desktop PC. didn't work.
I've connected it without the SIM and SD to an old nokia charger (0.7ma), no sign of a change but after ~ 1 hour I noticed the red led turned on - turning the device on showed 44% charged.
Now I am too puzzled. any ideas?
This is exactly what happened to me. .. it was the motherboard. I brought an external battery charger, charged the battery full so I could use the phone. Then used triangle away and odin to flash stock rom, and sent it in for warranty service. This seems to be becoming a common fault with the note 2 now....ive seen a few thread recently.

Hey there, my sgn2 n7100 had the same problem before, I tried everything, even disassembled the phone apart, but it was still won't turn on or charge, won't be recognized by pc or Mac. One day when I repaired my mom's iPhone 4 touch screen, I found out that the USB port was so dusty. I thought may be it's all because the USB port was dusty then I picked up my sgn2 and used a soft tooth brush with a little pure alcohol to clean every corner of the USB port. Guess what? After 15 minutes I connected my phone with the USB wall charger, my sgn2 just started to charge again. Trust me guys, try to use a soft brush to clean the USB port before you give your phone to the repair store or somewhere else. Good luck!! Hope it helps.
Same here, i manage to purchase note 2 for 300 euros! And when I put it to charge nothing!I went to download mode and then turn it on normal and its charging! Also happend the same with my s3 so eighter its a charging problems or seems to be one software issues

@scufutz I could guarantee the symptoms described by the OP is NOT software issue, as I have an N7100 with same problem and I managed to flash new kernel and still it does not charge even powered off. Download mode connects perfect.
I'll check if this cleaning method, or if its a circuit prob.

[Q] Xperia PLAY R800i Completely Dead

Hello,
My Xperia PLAY is dead. Completely dead:crying: No vibration when power button is pushed, no blue LED in fastboot mode (it won't get detected as well) and no green LED in flashtool mode. This happened after the battery went flat on Friday. It was late when I noticed the dead battery and since I don't charge phones overnight I left it till the next morning. I plugged it in the next morning and left it to charge for about three hours. I didn't see a red LED as usual but I didn't think much of it as I was late. Upon returning I noticed that the battery was extremely hot (burning hot) and the phone would not boot up. I immediately removed the battery and left both to cool. I then tried to power up again but it showed no signs life. Since I had a R800x motherboard lying around, I swapped boards and the R800x fired straight up. The battery hadn't charged fully (it was at around 25%) so I let it charge to 100% and swapped the R800i motherboard back. Still no life.
I tried to connect using flashtool and fastboot but still nothing. It's like the phone is completely dead! The board fuses were OK (I think they were fuses!) and it didn't have any burn marks.
This is what happens now if I connect to the PC-no signs of life on the phone and no detection on the PC (Windows XP SP2). If I leave it connected, I feel the battery heating up very quickly so I disconnect it. I tried flashtool with 0.58FTF but when it says to connect the phone it is not detected. Same goes for fastboot. I even tried connecting the phone via USB and removing and re-inserting the battery (as it had worked for someone with a bricked phone) but no dice.
I had Lupus ICS/GB V5 and ICS Original by DanyXP running. The apps I had were Titanium Backup, No frills CPU control, eBay for android and notification toggle (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037817). No frills settings were Min CPU 194Mhz, Max 1049MHz (stock value- wasn't overclocked) Governor Intelidemand V2 (unsure).
Is my motherboard beyond repair? I only had it for a couple of months but I love my Xperia PLAY and I want it back!
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

Jay.

Thank you for replying. How do I do this? I read a topic by Alejandrissimo and he might be able to fix my phone through remote support. I also think that it shut down by itself when something upset the trim area and the battery has nothing to do with it.
So I tried Testpoint and there's no response either. I followed this tutorial and found the testpoint locations for the XPLAY from the internet-

I tried the S1tool application as well but still nothing. Should I look for another phone now?

I have a feeling that this board is dead as well. I'm going to try one more time and then look for another R800i with a cracked screen or something and swap them out. I still can't understand how it died out of the blue! I never overclocked it and I'm not a very heavy phone user. It's shut down at the end of each day and I never let the battery run flat either. Happens to the best of us, I guess!

Hi Faisel,
You may be right, because the repair technician also said he suspected a short. Is this repairable?
I don't really know. All I know is when it is short circuited, the battery will get very hot and can burn and will damage the board
Sent from my LT30p using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So, the technicians returned my phone and said it is unrepairable! Bummer!
I'll be looking for another XPlay but first, how did this short-circuit happen? I didn't reverse battery polarity and no one else handled the phone repairs. Although I installed a new kernel and ROM, I didn't overclock it either. (it was underclocked to 194MHz using 'no frills CPU') I'm beginning to think that the earlier owner of the donor phone may have had too much fun with his phone!
Please tell me your views on this issue so I will be wiser with my next phone!
Regards,
Jay.

So, the technicians returned my phone and said it is unrepairable! Bummer!
I'll be looking for another XPlay but first, how did this short-circuit happen? I didn't reverse battery polarity and no one else handled the phone repairs. Sorry to bump so soon but I really need to know-will installing a custom kernel and ROM affect motherboard durability in any way? I will not be installing any CPU/governor customising apps this time but I really want DanyXP's ICS ROM and Lupus Kernel again! I might be getting another Play very soon so I've got to be prepared!
Regards.

Z5 Premium won't turn on

Z5 Premium not turning on
hello everyone,
PLEASE HELP ME!
My z5 premium was working fine.. battery was charged too, and suddenly it turned off, and it didn't turn on back again. I've tried all the different ways and solutions that should turn it back on:
hard reset didn't work
2 minutes hard reset didn't work
hard reset button didn't work
plugged it in using it's OEM charger and usb cable didn't work either and LED didn't lit up
plugged it in to the computer nothing happened, wasn't detected with no sign of life
I had to take off it's battery cover (using professional tools) unplugged the battery, connected the phone to the charger while the battery is unplugged, and nothing happened reconnected the battery back, and plugged the phone again to it's wall charger, and no sign of life.
i left it there all night long since the afternoon. and when i came back in the next morning to check if the phone is charging and the LED is lit up, but again NO SIGN OF LIFE!
(BTW, the phone is in mint condition and it was never been disassembled or repaired)
Please if anyone have an idea what this could be?
if anyone has encountered the same problem and went through the same of what I've been, and was able to repair it or find a solution PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
Now, I'm thinking of 2 things: either the battery is completely dead(damaged) or it's the mainboard which I don't hope to be.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS!
Now, forget about any sort of software repair, as I explained above, the phone didn't succeed in that.
So, any help or suggestion would be so much appreciated.
Thank you all for taking time in reading and participating in this topic.
Have a good day.

Not happy reading this thread. Why so many issues with Sony Android... Anyway;;
- I recently had the same issue - or an issue in the same ball park. Phone Just died and refused to charge, but would show a red LED and try to boot when plugged in.
- Sent it to Sony, Hoping it is only a dead battery
The OP sounds like a they have a USB port issue or a board issue, also OP phone will no longer waterproof after removal of cover.
Unclear as to whether you have tried the following;
- Turn on whist holding camera button instead of Volume up/down. it is worth a try
- Try to grab an official sony charging cable- basically impossible to buy nowadays, maybe a PS4 controller cable? try it
My stock unrooted Z5p died like this in April. Have the same issue as the OP and tried all the same solutions. My Z5p had only been used indoors for months with WiFi before sudden death. Replacing the charging port did nothing. Using the OEM cable and charger with a new battery gets a 2 sec red light when connected to power and starts booting up until the swirls (gets past Sony Xperia and powered by android screens). Then the screen goes dark and shows the big battery for a couple of seconds.
I didn't realize there was a sudden death problem with Sony phones until I started trying to fix this. What's even crazier is that I had (have) the Xperia Z, Z Ultra, and the Z2. The Z2 was used in the rain constantly and even survived an ejection from a handlebar mount at 15mph onto asphalt. (All these phones were rooted and using custom ROMs/kernels.) Seems like Sony has a serious QC issue they're not taking about.
