Hi guys I am looking for the best way to unroot my phone and return everything to the way it was out of the box.
I currently have full root with nand unlocked.
Thanks all.

From the unrevoked website:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update

I would install an official update first (to get rid of root) and then use that tool to re-lock the NAND.
Here's the link. I can't post it since I'm a new user:
downloads[/url][DOT]unrevoked[DOT]com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
not that simple. first, run the s-on tool. then, flash your misc partition with toast's modified mtd-eng.img. finally, flash a stock pc36img.zip. sound all good?
Hmmm..... now I'm even more confused.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
use the unrevoked s-on tool. then downlaod this thing. evo4g.me/downloads//count.php?target=evo-root.zip
unzip. put mtd-eng.img on your sdcard, nad adb push (which u need to set up if it isn't already) flash_image to /data/local. type:
adb shell
(make sure screen is on and unlocked) su (accept)
chmod 755 /data/local/flash_image
/data/local/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
then flash a stock pc36img.zip from hboot.
Ummm...you dont need s on to unroot as i just sent a phone back that i unrooted....all i did was downgrade to an older rooted build then ran the ruu from latest update. That put s on for me and unrooted

Sorry if I sound stupid, but what is the s on tool?

When you do a NAND unlock (aka a full root), the bootloader is turned to S-OFF to allow you to flash non-official ROMs, recoveries, etc. The S-ON tool allows you to turn it back to the ON position which is standard for non-developer devices (aka consumer-level). When you first bought your phone, it said S-ON in the bootloader, top right (hold volume-down while turning on your phone). Now it says S-OFF. You need it back in S-ON position to make it look like you were on a stock ROM (as well as putting the stock ROM back on).

I'm in the same boat...
I need to do the same to my Evo. Would it hurt if I just flashed the latest stock RUU instead of messing with s-on s-off utilities etc? It is a newer version than what I have on my phone now.
Thanks,
Dan
ah, this is why i refuse to use unrevoked...i rather downgrade to 1.47 and then root my phone using 1.47 methods...lol but when i was on 3.29 (not using unrevoked) all i did was run the official RUU on my computer with my phone plugged in and it unrooted my phone, and gave me s-on and flashed stock recovery.

When I rooted my phone I did not use unrevoked either.
Is this a method that I can use to unroot my phone and return my phone to default?

yea, use the latest ruu or the 3.29 to be on the safe side and it will restore you completely to stock.
DON'T use the latest...
That is if you want to be able to root again afterwards. The latest RUU 3.30.651.2 has not been cracked yet and you will be stuck with stock rom, until a solution is found at least. I did this and now I regret it, use anything 3.29 or below and you will be fine.
Oh... and dont accept any OTA's (over the air updates) while on an older rom or the same thing will happen.

He is right. I figured u wanted to unroot because ur sending back to sprint. If thats not the case then use 3.29 or under. I dont think they have found a root for 3.30....sorry bout that.
Is this not a rooted 3.30?....or am I mistaken?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819838
So the main reason I am wanting to unroot is because I am currently having some issues with mms. ONLY on AOSP roms though, and want to see if I restore my phone back to factory default and then gain root access if my problems will be gone.
So if I run just the 3.29 ruu, then my phone will be back on default? I wont have to worry about the s-on s-off thing?
Need to return my leedroid 2.2.2 to stock.
Somehow i have lost eng s-off. Tried to install different radio but it wouldnt allow me, as bootloader says ship s-off. So have been advised that i need to downgrade again, and go through the s-off / root process again - Here
How do i go back to the easy rooted 1.32 stock again. I have an RUU for that version, but its not seeing the phone. Found a workaround - Here - but it only got so far before the phone froze, and the installer said it couldnt find phone.
Thought for a minute i had bricked the phone, so after crapping myself, decided to seek help here on how to return to 1.32!
Look at the rooting tutorials for 1.72.
AFAIK, you need to change the version number for this to work (to allow downgrade).
Do you have ship s-off or you do not?
You can't flash a radio because you don't have eng s-off, therefore no fastboot commands.
Just flash any ruu you want using the pd98img.zip method and all shall be stock. Launching an ruu update from your pc is notoriously unreliable and I would never recommend it.
Here is a guide to the method if you have no idea whet I'm talking about.

Had tried to flash pd98img from my sd card but kept getting some error (cant remember what it was now, will check again later). So thought maybe needed to use the RUU to go back to a stock ROM, but was just guessing at that. Will have another go at PM98IMG when i get home from work.
You have Radio S-OFF, so you do not have to use the downgrade guide. Just flash 1.32.405.6 stock ROM using PD98IMG.zip (get that from the downgrade guide), and then you can use my Radio S-OFF tool to go S-ON. You can also check the S-ON instructions in my tool thread.

Thanks. I tried last night to do this (though i was going to go the full downgrade route) but couldnt get it to install. But i was selecting the zip from sd card, which i think is wrong? (hboot will pick the zip up itself?)
Can you briefly explain to me what S-ON is? Im a total noob here, and always thought we were looking S-OFF to flash Kernels, Radios etc.
I owe you a thanks. Already handed out 5 today and cant give any more!

hmm having problems. Have got back to stock ok. But when i try to run your tool i keep getting connection error. Have tried in XP and win 7, and from root of drive as some others have suggested worked for them. Any ideas?
EDIT: Think i have it sorted.
Ok, yesterday I was quite bored of my phone because it was pretty slow and there were many apps on it. Cyanogenmod looked like a good option so I decided to root my phone using unrEVOked 3.32 in this guide. UnEVOked didn't work, it came up with a "is your firmware too new" message. Everyone was saying how good revolutionary was, so I downloaded that and it came up with a message (cant remember what). I checked for Superuser app and tested to see if my phone was rooted, but all the apps said I wasn't. But when I go to the HBOOT menu, it says Revolutionary and S-OFF (before I used Revolutionary it said S-ON). I think this means my phone is half-rooted and I need to find a way to go back to the stock HBOOT and S-ON because my phones screen won't turn off (it just is very dark when you press the power button but you can still see the lockscreen).
In short I need to find a way to get back to the stock HBOOT and get S-ON again. I am also still quite a noob so I won't understand very technical instructions. Plz help
Revolutionary simply gives you S-OFF. And if in the last step, you selected Yes to install Clockworkmod Recovery, then it install Clockworkmod Recovery. To get actual root (ie Superuser), you must get the binary and flash it seperately. (Which is available here: - http://goo-inside.me/superuser)
Anyway, the procedure to get back to S-ON is stated here:

Reading a post in its entirety is so difficult for some people, innit?
Oh, sorry, thanks!
I'm currently S-ON with hboot 2.10.0001.
When I try to use Revolutionary to get s-off it tells me that I don't have the right Hboot version.
So I checked the wiki for the tool and it says I need 2.16.0001 or 2.15.0001.
I tried flashing 2.16.0001 in recovery and it appears to work but at the top of my bootloader it still says 2.10.0001?
I'm not sure what the issue is.
P.S. ive been running miui for a while and do have some root just not unlocked nand i guess.

have you tried unrevoked also you cant flash roms without being nand unlocked (s-off)
UPDATE: Never mind. Unrevoked forever got me S-OFF
I can certainly flash roms and access recovery. No problems there.
I definitely have root (titanium backup works and I can issue superuser commands in terminal)
Is it possible that the bootloader is wrong?
BTW I cant flash different recoveries, it goes through but when I check I still have the same recovery (Amon RA).
I used a very old method of rooting (prior to GB). Everything has been cool but I did revert to stock everything briefly about 7 months ago.
When I took my phone in cause of a burnt out battery.
Can I use unrevoked even though I'm already rooted?
Don't want to mess anything up since everything is working except small things like adaway (requires s-off and won't work unless i use ADB from recovery).

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

Thanks again for the help. Everything went good with achieving the "locked oow" but the only problem im presenting is being able to flash the pc36img file due to the fact that i have to press up in order to update. My volume up button is broken (second time with in a month) which is why im taking my phone into sprint. Im downloading and RUU from rootzwiki to see if im able to flash back to the stock unrooted rom from there or by recovery. Thanks again.

If you do an "adb reboot bootloader", and then run the RUU from your PC, you shouldn't have to press any buttons on the device.

Thats where my problem was, the "RUU" I downloaded from the first thread you mentioned was in .zip format not .exe but all is good now, fully unrooted and back to original crappy malfunctioning 2.3.5  thanks again for your help and puttin up with my noobness

hey guys i had to unroot my evo with the unrooting method mentioned above, but i messed up and flashed the s-on and flashed an RUU b4 downgrading the misc partition. The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

The looping doesn't matter - you should still have adb access, unless you didn't follow the instructions exactly.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
