Questions about flashing a radio. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

-Is Baseband version in About Phone the radio your current ROM is using?
-Can I flash SGH-T989-UVMC6 (4.1.2) if my ROM is Sons of Android B4 (4.2.2)?
-Is flashing the radio more "dangerous" than flashing a ROM or Kernel?

-Yes
-Yes
-No

You can flash diff radios at your leisure. However, radios will work differently for people living in different areas. I flashed uvmc6 and got super fast GPS lock and great data rates but it used alot of power even when the phone was idle. I flashed back to the l4 radio and get at least 1.5 more hours out of the battery. I'm in northern Ohio. So all you can do is try. Good luck.

[Q] radio q's...

hi there:
i have 2 general questions about radio updates...
1) is a radio update - 2.15.x, for example - a software update or a firmware update? like, did i flash my radio so that all my roms are affected? or, is only the rom i applied it to affected?
2) does a radio update - 2.15.x, for example - affect all radios in my phone? like bluetooth? or just my cellular radio?
i'm asking because i can no longer get my dinc to connect to my bluetooth, no matter which rom i'm on. i'm trying to pin it down, and the timing seems about right to when i flashed 2.15. even my stock 2.1 rom won't connect anymore. i guess it could be something else, but the radio seems a likely culprit.
thanks!
1. It is neither...it is a radio update
2. It affects only the baseband, or cellular radio...bluetooth has something to do with the bluez plugin, which is updated in the android versions

1. Technically, it's a firmware update, so yes, all of your ROMs are affected. ROM flashing has nothing to do with the radio.
2. The radio update affects baseband version, which has an effect on cell network connection/quality. Bluetooth, Wifi, etc, are all handled by the kernel, which is part of Android, not the radio. Think of the radio as a completely separate OS running outside of Android.
thx for the replies, guys. it's what i expected, although i was hoping i was wrong. dang, what's messin' with my bluetooth? dang...

Baseband question

Hey guys I have a question about baseband compatibility
My GNex is completely stock 4.1.1 and is rooted.
I was on bigxies ROM running uglc1 and I seemed to have better reception with it.
Thing is, ever since I went back to stock, I've tried flashing the same radio over xxlf1 and I can't get any service. I am experiencing the same issues once again such as random signal loss and no service. I ran GetRil and everything is good there.
So is it that you just cant run a different baseband on a factory installed rom or am I doing something wrong?
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Not all radio versions are compatible with every version of Android. This sounds like you have a GSM version of the GNex as I myself have a the CDMA/LTE version but in some cases when new version of Android come out or leak or what have you it's best to keep current the radio versions with the OS.... If that helps or makes sense at all. I do know that on the CDMA/LTE JellyBean updates I'm still using the radio versions from 4.0.4 with it and it's perfectly fine. Have you always had the loss in signal or is this only of recent with testing different radios?

I got it to work. Apparently some thunderstorms knocked out at&t service last night and I was flashing radios during it so when I got done, I couldn't pull any service down. While I'm still without signal, I know its not a radio issue now. Thanks for the response

About BaseBand

I have experienced frequently loss of signal from my carrier in Brazil, so I want to change my baseband. I've searched and didn't find where specifically baseband locates in my cell phone.
1. Does it lie in /data, or /system or wherever?
2. When I flash a ROM, for example JJ's, is the BaseBand flashed along?
3. How can I backup my current BaseBand, in case the new one does not work properly?
4. Would a different BaseBand enhance my WiFi signal reception, which is poor now, but was better in ICS stock ?
I currently use JJ's Hybrid custom ROM and ArcKnight's Kernel.
Thank you very much!

1. No, lies in completely different partition, which cannot be accessed.
2. No.
3. You can't, just note down the 2 last numbers, which you have currently and when something goes wrong, install that one back.
Even though, there is REALLLYY small chance of something not working properly.
4. Maybe.

[Q] Radio flashing?

Assuming that most users use their phone in the region they bought it why would you flash a another one, since the original was probably optimized for their region. Will flashing all these various ROMs also change my radio? Also...is radio the baseband?

Depending on where and when you got your phone could mean a newer, faster radio might have come out. I do believe radios are area specific, but not sure.
I think any radio for the t989 will work but your data speeds, call clarity or even phone performance might take a hit.
Usually roms wont erase or put another radio on and if they do you can always just flash the proper radio.
Generally going from rom to rom while doing a full wipe will not remove your installed radio. And yes the baseband is your radio version.
Hope this helps, I only have a basic understanding and usually try to stick to the radio my provider pre-loaded.

[Q] Reflashing stock Radio on 4.2.2

Hi I have a simple question, some people on Google + suggested me to reflash only the stock radio because I really have some problems in Canada to have signals on 4.2.2 roms. The stock radio was running on 4.1.1, is there any risk ? On stock I was reaching -95 signal for 4G (HSPA +) easely now I cant even have 1 bar.
Flashing news ROMs doesn't flash a new radio. But to directly answer the question: yes, you can flash whatever radio you want (as long as it is for your phone model).

This is right what I was thinking, so i'm assuming that 4.2.2 get the same signal force but the icon isn't representative. It make sense. Thank you !
