I purchased an ivic 5d from a company called vaistech. This allows you to emulate your android phone on the touch screen in your car. It does so with hdmi inputs and a Bluetooth mouse setup. My issues come from the mhl. My phone connects and is perfect in airplane mode or on Wi-Fi, however as soon as a packet of data is sent over mobile data, didn't matter of 3g or 4g the signal is lost and the screen flickers. Sometimes it congress back and sometimes it does not. I am rooted and have tried every Toro kernel or there and cm and pa Roma, nothing seems to help. It also happens in the house hooked to a tv when mobile data is enabled. I have spent time on the phone with vais who says their product is working correctly, which I agree. I have also been up to tier 2 support with Samsung who has no idea and just blames it on the root and Rom once they run out of ideas. I have read of other people having this issue with genetic mhl adapters. But none has been able to resolve it. I have tried genetic and Samsung brand adapters with no luck. I am hoping there is someone out there that has an idea why a data packet would cause the mhl signal to drop, my initial thought was power draw. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the same issue! Yes, 3g data doesn't disturb it, ti's only when I get a text it will make the screen freak out. I'm thinking a overvolt could correct the issue i'm going to try increasing all my voltages by + 200 MV and report back.
edit: I pumped tons of volts to it, it has no effect on the issue
An over volt was my guess too...this sucks. I've thought a lot about it and can't come up with any other ideas. Someone please help....makes me want to take an old Motorola to hook up to the car and leave on Wi-Fi and just tether my gn.
3g does disturb mine but not as much as 4g.

Have you tried going back to 4.1 or even 4.0? Was thinking of trying it...

I pretty sure 4.1 has the issue as well. I'll restore a back up of my 4.11 and test it. I'll reply later with the results.

Thanks for checking, really sucks.... what mhl adapter are you using? Samsung? I have read it is worse with third party mhl adapters. Wonder if it is worth a try to do a warranty exchange for the phone and/or the adapter?

Same issue with SG Note
I have the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy Note N7000. As soon a data packet is sent screen turns off. I've tried to connect it to my Pioneer Appradio 2, and I tried with two different TV's (HDMI). I even tried my friends Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100.
I thought I got a bad MHL, so I bought a original Samsung MHL. There was a tiny instruction in the pack which has a note that states:
Quote: "Any incoming calls or messages will freeze the media output. The media will restart to play after taking the calls or acknowledging the messages."
Could this be part of the problem?
I have the exact same issue, I have a Pioneer Appradio2 with a Galaxy Nexus (Toro) as the dedicated android device for it.
I have tried 3 different MHL adapter (a cheap Chinese one that looks like the official one, the actual official Samsung one and one that has the cables built in - the adapter is at the HDMI plug end with just a male full sized USB for power and micro USB to the phone).
I was hoping the 3rd cable would help thinking that maybe data transmission was causing interference to the adapter and moving the adapter portion to the HDMI plug (at the back of the radio) would help, but it made no difference.
So it seems the interference is internal to the phone, I have ordered a new USB flex cable for the GNex wondering if that will make a difference.
I've under volted, over volted and normal with no difference.
It's definitely data related, for example if I listen to music on Google Play Music that is stored locally on my device I will have almost no problems, but if I stream music from the cloud, it will cut out and flicker between normal, snow and black screen.
So I just grabbed the GNex out of my car and went connected it up to my TV with the official Samsung MHL adapter, same issues (or very similar) watching a trailer on youtube website on mobile data, audio will cut out and screen will go black, if I switch to airplane mode but enable wifi (so it uses wifi for data and not the mobile data connection) I can watch the whole trailer with 0 problems. The only difference is that I don't get the snow, just a black screen and audio cut out with my TV, though I suspect that is probably just how the TV handles the bad/interfered signal. It did seem maybe a little better connected to the TV, but I suspect that BT being off rather than a constant connection helped too.
So for anyone that is interested, I swapped out the USB flex cable (about $7 on ebay) and all my problems have vanished. Just took a 1.5-2 hour drive streaming Pandora the whole way and the GNex connected to my Appradio2 and not a single drop out/black screen/snow storm. I also ran Navigation for about the first 45 mins and it was still perfect, previously it would be constantly dropping out under that scenario. So for anyone else having similar issues try swapping the USB flex cable, cheap and takes about 5 mins.

Woo HOO, Got the FROYO Update this weekend! Not many changes that I have seen so far but I am glad to make at least this much progress.
Anyway, TV Out - Dag Nabbit!
First I bought the mini-jack to 3 RCA cable, tried it at home on THREE different televisions and it didn't work on any of them. THOUGHT the update would help, tried it again on the SAME 3 TVs and NOTHING. At least that cable was cheap!
Bought the MicroUSB to HDMI cable with HIGH HOPES, 45 bucks (Shipping Included) tried in on the SAME 3 TVs both BEFORE and AFTER the update to 2.2 and it didn't work either time or even TODAY!
The only setting I know of to change is the TV OUT in the SETTINGS menu. Which was turned on and since I am in NJ USA I used the NTSC (ATSC) Setting. Much to no avail. So, am I just REALLY good at wasting money or is it my phone OR is something else missing?
If MORE particulars are required let me know and I will provide them.
I got this phone BRAND NEW from T-Mobile in August of 2010, 5 months ago. I love the phone for it's display and all the working functions and apps. I DO NOT have a data plan, I use WiFi at home - works perfectly.
Thanks in Advance to all who may respond with something useful. Have a great Day (to all who respond period)!

Yeah, I have to flip the outside two plugs for mine. The middle, of course, should be switched with the other middle.
humm!
Dude has anybody ever made theirs work....I have been watchin for this since the phone came out but never seen anyone say it worked....I to have tried everything but didn't buy the hdmi......Tmo limits everything this phone can do....like rerouting our wifi calling to make sure it uses our minutes and the tethering they finally let us have now also adds additional charges to your bill. Good thing I can still run easytether free. But I really wish someone could help us get the TV OUT working...
Um.....TV Out works......If you're using a non-Samsung composite cable you'll need to swap the red and yellow connections most likely. I've had to do this with two different sets of tv-out cables (one for a Zune, one for a Sony camcorder)...
This is what I use and it works. Plug one end into the headphone jack and the Y/R/W into the exact color that they are on the TV.

Vibrant ka7..rooted and unlocked
Garminone updated to 2.1..rooted and unlocked. 68 hrs between charges!!!!
I also use the zune and it works for my vibrant too
Make sure that you buy a tv-out/av cable with long 3.5 jack, and with thin/small covering on top of it so that it fits right into the vibrant's 3.5mm hole and you actually hear it click. And yes, I use the red cable for video input instead of the yellow one.
So, got mine today from mobile fun, link Below.
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/bizlink-mhl-to-hdmi-tv-out-adapter-black-p29839.htm
Mobile Fun's mini Video Review
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnU5F_0TyZI&feature=player_embedded
First of all it works, the most important thing, it works well in fact and my 1080p videos look fantastic, those I have downloaded and those I have recorded myself with this phone, they really do look great and a HD TV. So for the measly price of 15-20 sheets its worth it regardless of the issues below.
The only problem:
For those that didn't know, i.e, didn't do their homework, you cannot just plug this in and it will work, it needs power. Now I knew about this and didn't really see it is an issue as I hadn't really imagined how this would look, work and feel. Well I can say that for me (only my opinion) its a bit of a mess, its far from elegant. Basically you have to plug in a usb cable into the adapter first, this powers it, then plug the adapter into the Phone and then the hdmi into the adapter and TV. This is all easily done but like I say it is far from a more elegant one cable solution that doesn't need power and doesn't need an adapter. For me this was my first real disappointment with this phone, a floating turd in an otherwise lake of glittering gold.
Now it could be argued that I knew about this and that I shouldn't be disappointed but I am, the whole thing in your hand just feels ungainly, something you are not going to know until you put it all together. I really don't like the idea that you have to have a second cable to power it either, again I know this so I don't need this pointing out but people should be aware of this drawback, however minor.
Summary (for those who can be arsed to read)
1. It works really well, HD stuff looks fantastic.
2. Its not an elegant solution as you need a usb cable to power the adapter itself.
What about the official Samsung one? That one is probably much better.

marginally better in that the USB input is place in line with the cable and so when inserted it doesnt jut out at a right angle.
This Phone is never going to need MHL, its too early for the tech I think, its a fail for me, should have taken the same route as the LG2x, although even with this issue the sg2 is still the best phone on the market.
Hi. I have expansys version for £13. Also works great. But with yours whilst in use, does the phone keep charge or charge up whilst in use. With mine I find so far that even though the phone is charging whilst connected to the tv, it looses charge

Dont worry - sorted it. Stoppped overclocking to 1.5ghz and using performance govenor (DOH!) and I can now stream 1080p from youutube over wifi (only works through full fat desktop internet browser mode btw, not via the youtbe app or youtube in mobile broweser page mode) with mobile data off and still charges the phone at the same time!
Wow 1080 video over internet wifi straight to tv. This phone rocks!
my only gripe with this adapter is that it requires power, if this port was just put in place to allow charging when playing this would have been fine, its just the fact you cannot use he adapter at all without an extra the power source.
I wonder what it actually is needing the power for.
The problem here is that there is no MHL compliant TV yet afaik.
Cause the MHL port in a TV would provide power to the phone without needing another cable.
You'd want it plugged in anyway. I can see the battery lasting an hour playing 1080P video outputting internally and externally at the same time.
Do you still have to have an external power source on the official samsung MHL adapter?
If so, I really doubt I'm buying one
In other words, I need to have a PC or power contact for it to work?

Hey,
is the output really 1080p (if you have a movie which is 1080p), or is it Android´s/ the phone´s native resolution?
just wondering
bye
Its the phones resolution unless you're in the video player, in which case it outputs it in HD if the source file is HD (does 1080i for compressed video, I've heard it will do 1080p with un-compressed video, but not tried yet to confirm).

Probably for the MHL-to-HDMI bridge chip and any support electronics. Note that once MHL-capable TVs enter the market, it may be possible to use a straight-through passive cable, especially if the MHL-capable TV provides charging input to the phone as promised.
can someone tell me what is the cost for a good cable in us dollars?
Wouldnt it make sense for there to be an option to turn the phone screen off when outputting to the TV?
i orderd mine from clove, still waiting for my order..
I ordered this cable just now at mobilefun, but I made an error in my phone number. Wanted to press the escape button so the page wouldn't continue but it was too late. Lol .. anyway I'm sure it'll be fine. Although, I didn't receive a confirmation email yet

Not sure I really need one but a heads-up for those who want it.
Edit: "Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 months"! - oh well maybe I'll order it and see if I need it when it gets here...
i am using the official samsung hdtv adapter/hdmi adapter. just got it today.
the quality of the output video is fantastic...
only gripe is similar to what was mentioned. have to get it powered before it can be used..
sighs..
I want to buy mhl cable for my note, the thing is, I'm not familiar with this technology at all, seen a few videos where mhl won't work unless its plugged into a power source, which might be an inconvenience as it requires u to carry the charger.
How is the image quality on the screen? 1080?
Anyone with good experience can tell me a way around this, more into less wires carried around?
and a good mhl cable link to buy from, cos there r thousands out there...
Sorry for such question but this is my first Samsung device (coming from desire HD)
Cheers.

I've yet to receive my Note but coming from a GSII I can answer a few things.
Unfortunately, yes you will need to have a power cable plugged into the MHL adapter, and I don't believe there is any workaround.
The effective resolution on the TV will be mirrored from the phone's native resolution. So a phone that is 480x800 will only mirror that resolution throughout the OS. Only when playing HD content will the phone put out 720/1080(p/i) effective resolution.
The great thing with the Note is that because the native res. is already 1280x800, that will be the res displayed on the TV which will be great for web browsing as that's about an average laptop res.
Any MHL adapter should do. I bought a cheap one from expansys and it works without a hitch. Just read any comments on the product to see if previous buyers said it doesn't work on a recent device.
I bought genuine Samsung from Amazon.com:

I had this issue a couple times on my GSII and I found that using SetCPU to lock the clock speed up to 1GHz+ [depending] helped and basically removed the issue, so give that a try and see if it did anything.
charging through HDMI
isnt the HDMI TV port supposed to charge the device , or provide enough power for the adaptor to work ?
not all models can provide power through HDMI but some newr ones can i suppose ? i read that somewhere so long ago but i cant find it anymore to link as a reference , though im not quite 100% sure of that , ,may be it me saying non-sense ??

From what I recall, TVs that support MHL will provide the adapter with power so the power cable can be used to charge the phone while plugged into the adapter. I might however, not be 100% correct.

Hi there !
I've got the same problem than you, 4braid. Connect/disconnect every 1 or 2 minutes while playing a movie. Perhaps is it a software problem ? I use MX Video Player. What is yours ?

Hi, I am using the default player but I don't think it's the problem as the video continues to play on the phone when the TV cuts out. Also, I've tried playing Asphalt HD through the TV and the same thing happens.
I'm gonna try another better HDMI cable and another app, just tu know if it's better. Perhaps will I have to try also with the branded Samsung MHL cable ?
I bought a non-samsung aswell.
Tried it and it works flawlessly on my LG plasma.
Tried several apps and sources.
Hi,
I think I got a clue !
In fact, it's not so easy to explain but I'm gonna try...
I have put my new HDMI cable between my Galaxy Note and my HD tv. I have watched a new movie with the same video player (MX video player) and I notice great results : no disconnections ! I was very excited and tried the movie that I was watching last time with problerms. And, then, no problems this time ! So happy again !
But that's not finished. Listen...
At a moment, it cuts ! And 4 seconds later my phone rings. I answear and watch my movie again. A few minutes later, a new cut ! And 4 seconds later, my phone rings a second time. I don't answear and the movie goes on. 15 seconds later, my movie stops again and my phone ring to show me that I have a message.
It seems that the phone network is not transparent in that case. More, that not only the fact that phone calls stop the MHL transfer (like the camera application do) because, otherwise, the signal should have stopped at the moment of the phone rings and not 4 seconds before. These 4 seconds are the time, for the phone, to switch between Wifi network to 3G network ! And, that's a fact, I was connected with Wifi during time where my MHL connection worked.
I'm not sure of being clear in my explanations but, if you ever put your phone near a amplified device, there's a symptomatic noise every x seconds or minutes when the phone look for a signal on the phone network (something like bzzz bzzz bzzz). Well, I think that each time that event arrives, the MHL link is "broken" for a little time.
To be sure, I tried somethig else : I have disconnected Wifi and used only 3G network and my disconnections returned back frequently ! I have reconnected my phone to Wifi and I have no disconnections problems again !!
So strange, isn't it ??
Perhaps the distance between my phone and my tv plays too ? It seems that a good quality HDMI cable is a good thing too.
Well, 4braid, could you try to use Wifi a short moment (or even cut the phone network by puting your phone in airplane mode) to test and tell me the result ?

Hi manu_katz,
You are a true genius!!!
Switched to flight mode and played a video with no problems (even tried a game).
Cancelled flight mode and signal to TV lost in less than a minute (video continued on phone). After picture returned to TV I called the phone from my landline and as soon as I pressed the last digit of the telephone number the signal was lost and 4 seconds later the phone rang. Also happened when I sent SMS to myself. I suppose this will happen every time the device "phones home". Many thanks for your info. you have saved my from buying a genuine Samsung MHL adaptor.
Great to hear I was right !
Me too, I have seen a movie entirely, yesterday night !
As I said, perhaps is there ways to correct the problem without need of cutting 3G network (like the fact to use a branded cable or the distance between phone and tv) but for now we find the way to use our f*** not branded cable ! Lol !!

I've encountered that issue too. It's a shame unfortunately, but the only way I've found to get them to work is to use software decoding. It's a downer, but it does work.
I've got a strange problem with my third party cable (similar to this one: http://www.lunashops.co.uk/goods-935.html). It seems like the output is cropped on the top and bottom (so the notification screen and dock are cut off). I've already tried all the aspect ratio settings on both of my TVs (1 HD Ready and 1 Full HD), so that isn't it. Has anyone else experienced this before?
Finally bought the expensive mhl adapter for the s3 and after hooking up my phone to my samsung px2370 1080p monitor, I don't like what I'm seeing. The picture looks really fuzzy and reminds me of interlaced output. Plus my monitor is reporting a resolution of 1920x1079. Anyone experiencing the same problem?

It might just be my pc monitor. I can't even get it to work with my computer via hdmi (dvi works though, as well as with my 360 and ps3). The adapter looks legit to me. I'll be trying it on a different tv and/monitor in a bit

I bought the new MHL adapter as soon as it was available from Samsung. Output from applications like Netflix is reduced quality, this is intentional by the Netflix app. If you play a HD movie, you will see the quality is very good.
My only problem was lag. It looked good, but it was the equivalent of playing a video game with a framerate of around 20 FPS, it made gaming impossible and movies frustrating. I was told it may be my MHL adapter, but I haven't gotten a new one yet.
Saying it's the adapter is the easy answer. I have one that works perfectly on almost any LCD TV I have tried, but on LCD monitors, I have issues usually. I have used it with an HDMI to DVI cable, and got the exact result you described. I think it has something to do with the monitor not recognizing the native output. I haven't used it on an HDMI monitor.
I can confirm it works quite well on almost all TV's.
Ok I think I know what the problem is now. Seems like the s3 only outputs tp 1080i, that explains the flickering and fuzziness on my Led monitor. Is there no mod or hack to at least make it output at 720p instead (since 1080p would probably be to demanding)? Why would samsung stick to just 1080i? Was it the same with previous phones like the s2?

Now that I'm on the puter it's gonna be easier to explain, I bought a T-Mobile MHL kit when
I got the HTC One S and rooted the device but for some reason it wouldn't work with it so
about a month after I had the One S I bought the GS3 and rooted it (still have both) and
tried it with this one and still nothing.
I was told by a few that it might not work on a rooted device but after doing the research it
seems that I'm the only one having this problem but I figured trying it on a different device
should show something, I'm at the point now that I'm sure it's the MHL kit and not a root
problem.
AFAIK only 1 cable/adapter exists that works with the s3 and its an official samsung product. Previous mhl adapters won't work due to a change in pin layout to the connector so if you bought one that isn't marked for the s3, the most likely isn't compatible and won't work. Even official s2 mhl adapters won't work

It figures, I should just restore the One S to stock or sell it but on another note I just posted a tutorial for anyone interested on how to use the GS3 and the PS3 as a media server, connections and settings if you have a PS3 already. In the T-mobile general section.

I saw one of these cool looking "MHL hub" devices for sale on eBay for between 10 and 15 dollars and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with them on the L900 Note2. I ask because I know the domestic versions of these devices often have many features locked out or missing (FM radio, tv-out, etc.).
Also, for those people who have confirmed they work, does using it just as a card reader require that external power be connected? Does using the HDMi output feature require power be connected? Can HDMi output, the card reader, and the usb slot be used simultaneously or can they only be used one at a time? Lastly, will such a unit fit a Note2 with an otterbox defender?
Thanks.

mhl/HDMi
Any updates on this?
I would guess no one has used it. What I can answer for you is that hdmi always requires power. I would think that everything would work at once (my hdmi dock hub does) like a normal usb hub. Now would it work with your case. That would depend on how much room you have when you connect usb.

So it would probably require the adapter or a usb cable hooked up to work. I can live with that, thanks for the input.

Please post (or pm me) if you get this. I'd like to know how it works for you. Had an rca adaptor for an iPhone and (like jlmancuso said) never dawned on me that I would want to make sure the phone was hooked up to a power adapter while watching a 2 hour movie. Doh...

I have bought a smart dock but It didn't work well for my phone. I then tried it on my sisters
S4 and it worked a bit better. At times it would glitch and the TV would blink on and off. I haven't tried this one yet im tempted to pull the trigger but not yet. I bought an MHL adapter which works much much better, and yesterday I finally got my bluetooth keyboard and mouse and they both work wonderfully. I haven't used them together( I dont have two sets of triple A batteries :/..)
simultaneous

I've read on other threads (look them up) that they work but some notice a lag when connecting the mouse and keyboard at the same time. I heard this also happens with Bluetooth mouse and keyboards. I'll try it out later today and see if I notice lag with Bluetooth items

I have the white samsung media hub with hdmi out. I use a wireless mouse/keyboard combo when streaming netflix (over wifi) and dont notice any lag (normally it kills all radio signal).

It is an official one but it sits right between my monitor and wifi router also right above my cpu. Every blue moon it has signal but normally it does not. Since I have multiple clones I just turn on another in case I get a call or text.

Everything running at once hdmi, mouse, keyboard, and usb drive all at once. Kinda need at least a mouse (on official media hub anyways) cause the phones screen turns off. The digitizer still functions but kinda difficult with no display.
