Phone keeps going into Download mode - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Oye.... So my brother's girlfriend's T989 (Same model as myself) did the kies update to 4.1.2. All was well for a little while, but now every time she plugs her phone in (I believe just into the computer, but need to verify) it goes into download mode. The phone additionally does random reboots and crashes.. All is stock, no root. I had her use the stock recovery to wipe the cache and factory reset, and still not working.
I RDP'd to her PC and tried to ODIN to stock, but since it automagically goes into download mode when you plug it in, I'm not sure how it's communicating with ODIN and if it's even taking the flash.
Any thoughts, or anyone seen this before? The worst thing is she lives 6 hours away, so everything I do is a walkthrough or RDP.
Let me know if anyone has any suggestions..
Thanks!

I find that I get that download mode issue if I'm not using the charger and cable that came with the phone.

Try a fresh install of Kies on your PC. If that doesn't work are you able to boot up into Recovery?

No it says that there was a firmware update error and to recconect to the computer with kies. I've had that error many times before and id just go into download mode and flash a stock tar in but this time Odin will not recognize it. Says not recognized
God damnit. Installed latest drivers from Kies and still not recognizeable. It boots into download mode so that means it's not bricked and should be hope for me. ugh

Honestly, that may be a brick. Pulling the cable while running Odin almost always ends up with that result.

This may sound weird, but try this.
Reboot your PC and load up Odin. Shut down your phone and pull the battery. While holding down the download mode buttons, put the battery back in. Then connect your cable once you boot into download mode.

Sorry to hear. If that has happened before, probably something wasn't right before. I've never had a spontaneous disconnect while using Odin and I flash a lot when testing the various releases.
If you can't get back into Odin D/L and have the phone be recognized, you might want to look at jtag repair from mobiletechvideos or having sprint expedite the warranty repair for you.

How about battery pull hold vol up and pwr for recovery mode while re-installing battery? then nan restore a backup . You did backup right?
This happened to me a couple days ago but I could get into recovery which fixed it. Make sure you have Odin open on both your computer and phone and THEN connect your phone to your computer. Also, reinstall Kies, all of your drivers, etc. on your computer. The weird part about what happened to my phone is that the phone would be detected while in recovery but not in Download mode.

It's ok. We got great helpful users here that read all the forums. Post your question here and it usually will be answered quickly. Also google has lots of links to relevant XDA threads like the restore a semi-brick thread. I prefer that to the forum search most times.

As someone else recommended to me, pull the battery from the phone and leave it out for a while. Then, hold down the 1 and power button (a little tricky) and slide in the battery. If the phone still doesn't turn on, try the procedure again.
I thought I had bricked mine and did this -- it worked after a few tries.
Also, another thought -- sometimes leaving the battery OUT of the phone for a while (like overnight) and trying it again works.
Thanks for the suggestion but I have already try that.
Actually I have been reading every possible solution during the past 2 and today I build my own USB JIG that has a 300kohm resistor between pin 4-5 and still not able to get into download mode.
Have left the battery out of the cell-phone for a complete day.
Have try keep push button 1 and power and sliding the battery in, wait for a couple of seconds, slide it out and repeat the process for a while.
Done the same using the USB
Running out of ideas
So your initial flash of CWM via ODIN failed. You then tried to do what? Flash a complete stock .tar file via ODIN and it failed on the modem.bin process?
It kind of sounds like a few things could be the culprit.
Did not use the .PIT file when flashing the CWM.tar
Bad or cheap USB cable
Bad download of CWM.tar and/or whatever you flashed 2nd
Moving of the device while using ODIN, which could have jostled the cable

Well, not sure what the problem was, I have been using ODIN since last year when I got my EPIC and I never had problems. This time ODIN hang in the middle of the factory.rfs flashing (I waited for 20 minutes and it did not went through) so I turned everything OFF and :O surprise, phone was dead
I try battery CPR, build my own USB JIG (that works like a charm in a couple of frined's SAMSUNG phones ) but my phone still nothing.
The battery is at 4.045V, today I will use a charger to see if having the battery at maximum helps.
This is my last thing to try, if this do not work I will take the phone to SPRINT and see what they can do.
If they can fix it, cool, if not at least I hope they replace it
Thanks for the help and support
If your repartition was checked flashing a modem then you bricked it. Try connecting to odin with no battery or sd card BUT have your usb connected and see if that does anything.

So if your phone is completely bricked, aka, ()$)(# windows update in the middle for a reboot.
The power button does nothing, can't get into download mode, no response to plugging it in with no battery etc etc.
Anything to be done with the phone besides throwing it at a wall?

It is still at the Tech's discretion. The last thing someone wants to do is fight corporate after a tech blacklists your phone. And most techs are sporting rooted phones and kn.ow what clockworknod is.

[Q] Problem with P930_UDT_v18f_04112012 (ICS LEAK)

Every time I try upgrading my phone I get to either 4% or 7% and then the LG phone update program gives me an error saying:
Problem with communication between cell phone and PC
Please disconnect the cable from your cell phone in order and remove and connect the battery.
Connect the cable to the phone in emergency download mode again as you were guided in the first step.
Press the Restart button to resume update.
I've also had NO LUCK rooting my phone like everybody else. I get error messages from the DooMLoRd's program saying it won't root because everything is read-only.
If anybody knows a solution to my problem or has experienced the same thing and knows a solution.... YOU WOULD BE A GREAT HELP!!!
Have you tried running it as administrator?
Even running as administrator gave me no luck.
Did you put your phone in download mode? I always recommend to flash any kdz from d/l mode.
To get root you need to use TPSparkyRoot (you can find it in the thread of the leak).
Even in download mode the program won't go past 4%. I never tried rooting however in download mode. I'll have to try that in the morning when I get up.

perhaps try superoneclick 2.3.1 way to root

I HAVE THE UPDATE WORKING NOW!!!!
The problem was......... THE USB DATA CABLE. My Dollar Store one (I always used that in the past with my Xperia X10) for some reason doesn't work with the upgrade but yet the one that came with the phone did.
You know, you could have used the CWM flashable ICS which is the same as this except that it gives u busy box, root, and leaves CWM intact. Just a heads up.

I wish I had CWM, I can't get it to install on my phone.
I have ICS 4.0.3 installed along with the phone rooted. It's just that I get some goofy error message whenever I try booting into CWM. I kinda did everything the wrong way. I first installed ICS, then rooted the phone and finally tried adding CWM. I think might have to do the unbricking thing this weekend and start from scratch. UGH...

Hard Bricked MY GS2 Needing help

Hi guys what my phone is currently doing is when ever i plug it into the computer it says disk needs to be formated but it kicks off every 2-3 seconds it does that and it just generates a bunch of format windows on my comp. the phone does not turn on, does not go to into recovery nor does it try to boot tried these steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359 and more but does nothing except for when i plug the phone into the computer it starts doing what i have described above.
thanks for looking and any information is greatly appreciated.

What happened to cause this issue did you try to root or flash a rom, phone will not go into recovery or download mode?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
i had recently updated the recovery because the old one kept acting up and this one did as well like it would take for ever and when i would try to clear the cache it would just be there and do nothing only way was to remove the battery and put it back on but this time i tried to do a format instead of just cache cleaning to get a fresh install but it just never turned back on it had been trying to format for a half hour so i thought that was enough time hmm im wondering how that warranty would go cause the phone is in mint condition.
What did you update it to? And how?

I am having an exactly same issue. I can't turn on the phone, cannot connect to ODIN because when I connect it PC, the DISK FORMAT messages keep popping up. seeking for an solution very bad. If anyone, know how please helppp, I will be very appreciated.
If the phone responds to a charging cable in the wall socket I don't believe it is bricked. And you said it does respond to your computer in some way. Have you tried getting it into download mode and flashing a stock rom? When I had a captivate I thought it was hard bricked but I got it into download mode with a usb jig (my particular captivate did not have 3 button combo to download mode) and used Odin to flash a stock rom and went from there.

Try a different usb slot sometimes a usb slot may malfunction I had that problem.
Also don't use a usb extender hub if you are it may screw with the voltage.
a new usb I'm sure you've heard that one but this has the least chance of working because you the s3 makes the noise which means the usb works
Try a new computer and check that you have Kies installed
Try to restart the laptop that also helps

Unfortunately, I have this exact same problem. I'm really scared that I may have bricked my device...
The last time my phone was working, I simply updated my phone to CM10's latest update for the phone. Everything was working perfectly fine. All I did was download the latest rom from get.cm for my sgs3.
Then I read online that this new 4.1.2 rom came out. As a new member XDA won't allow me to post the link of the rom...but you can find it in the Original Development Thread of the T-Mobile SGS3. Slim-i9300-2.7.0-OFFICIAL is the name of the rom [I copied it directly].
After making a backup of my current rom, installing this rom and installing the new gapps, I rebooted the device and nothing has worked since... [this happened about 12 hours ago].
Now, when I take out the battery and plug the charger in, the notification light becomes solid red. But nothing works...I can't go into download mode, I can't go into recovery. I knew this immediately when the phone did not vibrate after me holding down the power button for a few minutes.
The red notification light only turns on when I plug in the phone when the battery is out. If I put the battery in, after a few moments it goes away. I honestly thought maybe the battery was just dead...but I left it plugged in all night and I still can't do anything with the phone.
Please, any help for me and whtnld would be much appreciated...
@OP
Did you mod the build.prop for any reason? (Google wallet maybe?)
If you did and then tried to update/install recovery through Rom Manager, it may have tried to install the wrong recovery on the wrong partition, resulting in a hard brick.

Rom manager is too buggy imo. Goo manager and TWRP recovery is the way to go next time.
