[Q] Huge Odin Dilema - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was using the pre rooted EL29 odin package and all of a sudden my phone randomly disconnected while going through the file recovery. It boots up to download mode but now my PC wont recognize it. It says "USB Not Recognized" and i've tried 4 cables and 2 computers. Any help?

Try a fresh install of Kies on your PC. If that doesn't work are you able to boot up into Recovery?

No it says that there was a firmware update error and to recconect to the computer with kies. I've had that error many times before and id just go into download mode and flash a stock tar in but this time Odin will not recognize it. Says not recognized

God damnit. Installed latest drivers from Kies and still not recognizeable. It boots into download mode so that means it's not bricked and should be hope for me. ugh

Honestly, that may be a brick. Pulling the cable while running Odin almost always ends up with that result.

This may sound weird, but try this.
Reboot your PC and load up Odin. Shut down your phone and pull the battery. While holding down the download mode buttons, put the battery back in. Then connect your cable once you boot into download mode.

Now it says installing drivers, but then failed....

Sorry to hear. If that has happened before, probably something wasn't right before. I've never had a spontaneous disconnect while using Odin and I flash a lot when testing the various releases.
If you can't get back into Odin D/L and have the phone be recognized, you might want to look at jtag repair from mobiletechvideos or having sprint expedite the warranty repair for you.

this has happen to be before, i had a faulty usb cable, so i switched and it worked. Have you tried using a different usb cable?

How about battery pull hold vol up and pwr for recovery mode while re-installing battery? then nan restore a backup . You did backup right?

This happened to me a couple days ago but I could get into recovery which fixed it. Make sure you have Odin open on both your computer and phone and THEN connect your phone to your computer. Also, reinstall Kies, all of your drivers, etc. on your computer. The weird part about what happened to my phone is that the phone would be detected while in recovery but not in Download mode.

Rooting/Update gone wrong

I am in need of major help.
My brother attempted to root and update my phone to the leaked ICS fd16. All was going well until the usb cable accidentally disconnected and now I'm stuck with a partial update and only keep on getting a "firmware has encountared problem" message. It will allow me to go into download mode but it won't let me get into the recovery screen to run a full factory reset.
I can't run an emergency firmware recovery through Kies since there aren't any backup files. Not only that but now my phone can't be recognized through my macbook.
I have attempted to use the usb cable that came with the phone as well as another HTC cable I had in hand from a previous model I owned.
I don't want to take it to Sprint yet since it was my fault that we even attempted this modification and I was even told that Sprint wont be able to replace my phone right then and there for another phone.
I'm going out of town on Monday so ordering a jig or sending it mobiletech is not an option. Any help right now would truly be appreciated.
THANKS
As long as you can get into download mode you are OK. Just download any rom tar to your computer and odin it to your phone in download mode. Should fix it.

How to recover from Brick

Simple write up for now...simplicity is the key here....
and let me explain first what I did...flashed a rom using rogue recovery on Caulkins ICS 1.6 I think...
things I tried and did not work...
*zimage script for windows copied went through...but did not work considering system was M.I.A. and SU wasnt present to finish the job...
*hold down button does not bring you into download mode as expected...
HOWEVER...if it seems all you can manage to do is boot into the rogue recovery and the sd cards and backups are all whacky...then you my friend still have a option....use ADB COMMANDS while connected in recovery mode...
adb reboot download
and your phone should now be in download mode...
p.s.-if this has been covered already please disregard and be on your way i suppose...otherwise if this has helped you please hit the thanks button XD
Don't think this will work from a hard brick.
BUT
Even though you can get into download mode, doesn't mean anything you try to Odin will work. It'll stall at data.img or something similar.

You try enabling USB debugging in developer options?
If that don't work, try:

why is this in development? and how is that different than pulling the battery and reinserting it and holding vol down + power?
this is in the stickies and super basic knowedge...

everyone must have MISTAKEN ME...
I COULD NOT...to save my life get into download mode via holding vol down button...nor would it boot...
nor am I a noob at any of this...
there was nothing on the phone but a borked recovery...
the one from ics roms (rogue I think) ...I did the stupid and flashed a rom while using rogue...
and wiped...my phone completely bricked...
no download no nothing...
took me a hour...but then I realized as long as there is recovery I should still have adb.
and yes it actually took in odin...my phone is been running perfect stock for last couple of days now...
downloaded modem and data.img with no problems...
sorry I wasn't quick on the reply but guys come on...
I know the sticky is there...this was a complete different situation than anything I seen in the sticky...
and also putting anything on SD card and trying to either flash or restore would not work seeming the sd cards in the recovery are backwards...emmc reads sd card...and vice-versa...
so thanks for the know-it-all guys who didn't read saying I COULDNT GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE and I wouldnt of posted it if it didn't work....

this still doesnt make sense.. either your button is broken, or you werent doing it right..
also, if you can adb into recovery there are hundreds of ways to fix that problem, you are nowhere near bricked. you just have a messed up flash. if your sds are swapped and you cant get to them and flash, thats an error with the recovery, but you can still adb in and copy them to a place you can flash from. you can even flash directly from adb.. but nothing you did from add, nor recovery could restore your download mode. if you lose that you need a JTAG.

[Q] Bricked, computer won't recognize phone in Download mode, won't boot, no recovery

Hello all,
I have flashed ROMs via recovery and Odin plenty of times. I would say I generally know what I am doing and I flash ROMs on the regular. This is my second Samsung device and have been rooting/flashing for almost two years, so not a noob.
I was stuck in a bootloop on my Note and it wouldn't even let me boot into recovery, so I decided to Odin and back to stock and try again... I got the one-click, phone recognized, yellow COM box popped up, hit start, walked away for 10-15 minutes. Come back and there has barely been any progress at all... I could barely see the green progress bar. I figured something is wrong because I've done this before and it only takes a minute at most. What I did next is what I think messed me up...I pulled my phone and closed the Odin dialogue box and tried to redo it. Problem is, nothing I could do would get me the Yellow COM box. The phone goes into download mode but Odin doesn't seem to want to recognize it. I've tried EVERYTHING. When I boot the phone normally, I get the Samsung error screen saying there was an issue with a firmware upgrade and I should try Kies. I download Kies and attempt to upgrade firmware that way, but I get to the last step where it says "Upgrade Firmware" or something like that on the button but the button remains greyed out and I can't click it... I have tried everything. I downloaded the toolkit and installed drivers but each time I do that, the driver install freezes my PC at the end of the install. Same thing happens if I try to get the drivers from the Samsung site directly, the computer freezes. I have rebooted a million times and tried every USB port there is. I have had the computer try to "set up" the deivce while it's in download mode a few times but usually hangs at the end (probably bc drivers not properly installing). Once or twice it setup fine, but still Odin won't recognize. I think the driver thing is moot because it was recognizing the device before this mess just fine and it recognizes and accesses my wife's S2 just fine.
I am at my wit's end. Did I destroy my phone???? Is there nothing I can do to salvage it?
I just aged about five years in the last 2 hours. Please someone help!!!
Longshot, but try installing the toolkit on a different system and try again. I've had drivers from different systems mixed up and it worked fine when installed on a fresh system. Probably not your problem, but worth a try before trying to warranty your phone. Good Luck.
Also try a different usb cable.

Different cable didn't work.
I'll try a different system but I'm not holding out hope.
Will warranty work if in Odin mode the phone says that I have a custom ROM and custom recovery installed???
Am I out of luck here? I always thought that if it boots up, it's not completely bricked. Shouldn't a PC see it if I get the drivers installed???
If no computer sees it and the Download/Odin screen shows Root and custom ROM/Recovery so no warranty replacement, what are my options?

You say it finds your wife's phone just fine and she has the same model? Have you tried installing the drivers manually through the driver update in device manager?
As to other options, if you're paying for the additional insurance Sprint offers, and are willing to pay the $200 deductable (as opposed to the $500 replacement cost) you could always turn it on and drop it in a bucket of water. They won't be able to pull root/rom info from the unit at that point. Otherwise I think it's a matter of luck as to what kind of techs work in the store you go to. I've heard stories about those who were sticklers and those who didn't care (the latter tend to those who root their own phones). All you can do is ask, hypothetically of course.
Wish I could be more help. Good luck.
Please help!!! Does anyone have any other advice?

If you can get the drivers to extract (I know it crashes when you try to install) you could still try the manual update method for your phone's drivers. (can't count how many times I've had to do that for peripherals and my win7 laptop that isn't certified for win7)
Did you try completely uninstalling the drivers before you tried to reinstall them?

I would download the tool kit and reinstall the drivers from their. I had the exact same problem months ago. took hours of trying to flash different stuff to get it to work. make sure that you try to unplug then replug in the cord and I think you must use a cord that is made for your phone. Mine wont work unless I use the one supplied with it which is weird but I read somewhere that the prongs are longer or something.open the oneclick oden then plug the phone in and let it sit for a min or 2

I'm going to try tonight on a different computer.
So you think I should do the following:
1. install drivers
2. open odin one-click
3. put phone in download mode
4. plug phone in
5. even though yellow COM thing should pop up right away let it sit for a while
6. flash one-click back to stock
I'll give it a shot after work.

I have actually had this happen before. I couldnt get anything to work even the one click. So what I did was use the toolkit to flash a custom recovery with the stock kernel. Then when it rebooted I held the volume up home, and power buttons. Go into recovery and nandriod back to my previous rom and it worked. But my pc did recognize my device.

I didn't know you could flash a recovery to the phone without booting to Android. The toolkit says boot to android as pre-req for installing recovery. If I could get to recovery I could fix this. I'll give it all a shot again tonight.

[Q] [Help!] Bricked Phone with driver problem

Hello everyone...
I was updating the phone recently, and went to reboot it (cyanogen mod ROM btw) and now I have no idea what it did but it is now stuck on the Samsung logo, and their is no recovery I can use on it. Only DL mode works.
I tried to use Odin to relfash but the problem is on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers, they install the drivers, but they still fail to recognize the phone when I plug it in!
I have tried different USB ports, a full driver uninstall, multiple USB cords and the computer refuses to recognize the phone saying "USB Device not recognized"
Again, the drivers install fine, and I did a reboot after each install and uninstall. No luck.
I didnt even install drivers on my W8 netbook and I was able to flash back TWRP using Odin and Download mode yesterday when my attempt at flashing TWRP 2.6.0.4 originally failed.
Fire up download mode, then open up Odin (you should see a COM port open), load up what you need to install, then flash.
What are you trying to flash using ODIN? A bootloader or a ROM?
"BootLooping GhostBrick"
Holy crap! you too? I'm experiencing the same thing too bro. its my girlfriend's phone tho. she's borrowing my Nexus 4 while I work on fixing her SGS2...I seem to have contracted a serious case of the BootLooping GhostBrick, just like you did, right after updating. I went through the same steps troubleshooting as you did, and ...its a guess, but I'm starting to figure the solution will probably include: 1. using ADB to push sum files to the phone, or otherwise somehow reflashing stock firmware from the PC.
2. Re-Root the dam thing and flash a kernel with a recovery (like CWM or TWRP) using rom manager...and 3. Considering installing a ROM of my choice Like PACMAN, or Cyanogenmod.....hmm...Yum
anyway, the search for the vaccine to this dreadful affliction begins. Please post if you find something, I will too.

Holy crap! you too? I'm experiencing the same thing too bro. its my girlfriend's phone tho. she's borrowing my Nexus 4 while I work on fixing her SGS2...I seem to have contracted a serious case of the BootLooping GhostBrick, just like you did, right after updating. Reinstall Odin and the drivers for t989, then go get twrp 2.6.0.4 from techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules then open Odin and put the phone in DL mode, now when odin connects make sure u open the recovery in PDA format and touch nothing else in Odin, flash twrp and ur good, this version is capable of dealing with 4.3 too with no issues at all

Re-installing Odin and drivers still didn't get Odin to recognize the device in download mode. Windows 7 isn't assigning it any COM port, and nothing can be flashed unless Odin sees the com port the device is on. I used Goo Manager to flash TWRP 2.6.0.3 over my previous 2.6.0.0 version and now I'm stuck on samsung logo, can't reboot to recovery and PC won't recognize device in download mode. Anyone know a solution?

Welcome to ur first soft brick, and as I said in ur other post u need to disable or removes Samsung kies before trying to use Odin as long as any part of kies is running even in background Odin won't see the device, also make sure u use factory/data approved USB wires, also try diff ports, sometimes Odin won't see com3 but will see com5, be patient and follow this and ull be fine, also twrp2.6.0.3 has been known to cause sftbricks, DL 2.6.0.4 from techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules its the newest and 4.3 compatible

Yeah, I wish I'd known that. Goo Manager automatically selected it as the latest recovery. I just can't get past the device not showing up as a com port issue at all. Is there any known way to make windows recognize it?

It's not a matter of trying different com ports, I can't get the PC or Odin to recognize the phone in download mode despite uninstalling kies, installing the latest drivers twice, 3 different OEM cables, multiple usb ports, nothing. when I plug it in, Windows doesn't make any sound like with other usb devices, nor does it try and search for drivers. Are there any other options short of JTAG repair?

I was going to reply earlier, but I got side tracked and this guy is literally having the exact same problem as me. I tried multiple OEM cables, and ports and Windows recognized it but it still won't let me USE it. Odin (after re-install) still shows no connections or ports.
Also, yeah this phone isn't mine either, my Dads. He is using my old S3 for now and is quite mad with me hahaha.
So yeah, I have to re-cap...
-Updated through Goomanager.... (the culprit I am guessing)
-Rebooted
-Got stuck on the Galaxy S 2 screen
-Plugged in with 4 USB cables to three different USB ports
-Uninstalled and reinstalled Odin numerous times, each with a reboot between.
-Odin fails to recognize it
-Windows KNOWS IT IS THERE, and makes a sound when plugged in, however it says "USB Device not recognized"
Any more ideas?
Thanks for the help to guys it is very much appreciated. I will donate to the person that can help me out of this

Do u have Samsung kies installed on the PC? If u do your going to need to remove all traces of it in order for Odin to see the phone, also search Samsung t989 USB drivers and install the specific driver for Hercules, if u can get the phone into DL mode its fixavke so don't stress to much, I use Odin v1.85, download twrp2.6.0.4 from this site techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/herculesif Odin still fails to recognize the device try diff PC, factory/data approved USB wire, an make sure kies is nowhere and it should work, pm me if u need more help I'll do what I can, but like I said as long as DL mode is accessible its only a soft brick...

Kies is no where in sight. I will try yet another PC as well as searching for Hercules specific drivers (any link?) When I get home. Thank you in the mean time

Omg....
I am experiencing the same problem. Did anyone find the solution?
Probably a faulty USB port. My computer shows that message all the time, only one of them works correctly. If not, you just need to install the correct USB Drivers, because even if you don't have them it should recognize your phone as a Samsung phone but will say that the drivers did not install correctly.
