Ya its strange..I tried each n everything including cleaning ports and changing too!! The most weird part is except my GNEX, all my other devices works fine
I have been dealing with this very same issue for about a month.
So far, without any success, I've tried:
- connecting my gnex to computers running windows 8, windows 7 and Ubuntu. (Removed and reinstalled all drivers using multiple routes.. Gnex toolkit, Samsung drivers, pdanet etc.)
- I've cleaned the USB port multiple times (gentle toothpick, canned air, rubbing alcohol)
- I've disassembled the phone and very carefully removed the USB flex cable to check for damaged ribbon cables.
- reverted to stock ROM
- tried both CWM and TWRP recoveries
I'm now out of ideas. However, there is a replacement USB flex cable on amazon for roughly $7. This is my next and probably final option as I'm no longer on contract with any service provider and use my gnex as a WiFi/sip device.

Is your problem fixed now?
One more weird situation has begun..my gnex charges itself(even though i haven't connected any charger)..it actually doesn't charges but it seems as if i am really charging it! This happens after every few minutes..
No. Still without success. Have not yet ordered the replacement part.
If your biggest issue is transferring files though, there are several apps like Google drive and dropbox that can come in handy as well as file explorers that allow network access over WiFi (I'm about to us ES file explorer to transfer a 2gb file... Hopefully)
From what I've read here on xda and elsewhere, this issue will likely lead to a complete failure of the USB port, meaning no charge either. Best of luck to you that this doesn't happen.
**edit - if you are already rooted, be careful not to undo it, because I've not found a way to root without USB. Also, there is ADB over WiFi, I just haven't messed with it.

Exactly ! i am facing the same situation i.e. sometimes my phone charges and sometimes doesn't..even when connecting to computer ,adb doesn't work and it may charge the phone sometimes..
Is my gnex's USB port damaged or is it software related issue?

The phantom charge is another symptom of the faulty USB port. I've yet to experience it myself.
Here's more about it:

What does "phantom charge" means?
By phantom charge, I mean that symptom you described of your phone saying it is charging even when it is not plugged in.
I have ruled out software issue for my phone, and likely your phone as well but that is your decision. To me, this is definitely a hardware issue.
The part I linked to is twice as expensive as I remember. Perhaps do some more searching for a better price.

Hi,
my usb connection is pretty screwed up, it only charges and windows doesnt recognize the device anymore, It says the device malfunctioned ... ODIN doesnt recognize the phone anymore also. I would like to know if there is a way for me to return to a complete stock version of my phone for warranty purpose without a working usb connection. I have a Telus version of the sgh-t989, and tried with different computers, different usb cables, bought new samsung oem cables, but nothing works, and it used to work before.
Also I saw in the market this Mobile ODIN Pro witch can do the same tasks as the pc connected ODIN. Overall as good feedback but some reviews I saw stated the it messed up the phone and needed regular ODIN to fix it, and thats currently not an option for me.
My phone as CWM recovery and is rooted.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver?
Edit: the usb driver found here: m.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-T989ZKBTMB

Yes, even tried on a clean windows install twice,
After all your troubleshooting I'm inclined to think you have defective hardware

I saw somewhere, this zip file that you flash in CWM, its called ''SGH-T989-UnRoot_ROM_Zedomax.zip'' wich unroots and restocks, but its for t-mobile, wondering if there is such a file for telus maybe
Im pretty sure as well that my problem is hardware, since it used to work without any problems on my 3 computers, and now doesnt.
My phone is still under warranty, thats why I want to bring it back completely stock to get it fixed or replaced.
I love this phone, and is in mint condition besides this usb problem
Does the USB port on your phone seem solid? No jiggling etc? Dust free? With you trying different cables and computers with proper drivers its probably safe to assume your phone is the problem...have you verified those cables handle data? I've seen some cables that just supply a 5 volt charge...

I tried the usb cables with other phones, and there is no problem with them.
I cleaned the usb port at the bottom of my phone with a dry toothbrush.
The port itself is solid but not like it used to be, if I wiggle the cable while its charging , it will stop charging until I put the phone down and stop moving it, then it will restart charging again.
Im pretty sure the problem itself is the port, thats why Im looking for a solution the get back to stock , so i can get this fixed before the port stops charging the phone also ... And then Im really screwed
So I have a feeling my USB port is broken. It suddenly wouldn't mount to my computer. I tried a different computer, same thing. I tried to reflash my rom, same thing. And now the charging is wonky at best.
I'm just wondering what my options were. I bought this phone outright myself. So I don't have a warranty. What do I do?
EDIT: Seems that charging is working fine... just my usb connection is gone. Any ideas?
I am also having this problem. USB charges fine but shows nothing when connected via usb to any of my PCs or a macbook air. mounts>USB Computer connection is set to Mass Storage and I have tried switching to MTP / PTP and back. It will not connect as any of these. I have tried rebooting both machines. I am running TeamChopsticks CM9 Beta 1 (7/15/2012) and noticed this problem when I tried to connect to update to the latest version of this ROM. I have not yet tried flashing other ROMs. Rebooting into download mode works, but even from within download mode when plugged in to the computer it does not connect.
I'm having the same issue. I bought the phone used from a Guy that works in a flour plant and flour was caked in every cranny, including the USB to the point the charger wouldn't fit. I've since cleaned it out, and it charges now, but doesn't connect. There are also weird issues with the car Home turning on randomly, which I read somewhere is somehow connected to faulty USB ports (maybe the car mount has an extra pin or something rather than the magnet mechanism of other phones). At any rate, i ordered a new port on eBay for just $7 including shipping, i might take a while before i have the time to install it, but I'll report back if it fixes the problem.

LOL a flour plant? If it ever gets wet, don't use a blow dryer on it, you might end up with a loaf of bread not a brick hehe

LOL!!! thanks just for the laugh!
So today was at PC with my nexus and the PC has seemed to have forgotten the drivers (windows 7 ultimate 32 bit) so tryied to reinstall them. It seems my PC thinks the stock USB cable is a device and won't recognise it (phone not connected to other end) therefore can't see my gnex when plugged in. I tried another cable which the phone connected as media device but not seen by PC.
So now the weird thing after trying to sort out the drivers for a while when I plug the phone to PC the phone powers off instantly just like a battery pull and won't turn on until battery pull. I tried this several times with the same results. I then tried to charge through mains and it works.
Wtf is up with this?

I could try another PC today I guess. I'm using Franco kernel 250 and minco v4 and I haven't seen this reported in either thread which I read all posts. Must be damaged I guess, I did drop my gnex on a pavement outside even though I have a case it was quite a bash.

I bet you have USB debugging turned on. Turn it off and the drivers will start working again. Common issue.

Just to update you guys this issue has now been fixed. I bought a brand new official Samsung USB cable and it works correctly. Adb and boot loader driver and interfaces all working fine.
I do how ever really recommend an official Samsung ac charger and official Samsung USB cable, the connector which plugs into the phone fits so much better, there is no play where the connector can move, it sits absolutely solid and the quality is much better than the cables provided with the phone.

Off Amazon for roughly £2.99 and the USB was around £1.19. Search Samsung android charger, chances are the item description with say for Samsung galaxy i9000 (sgs1) but it works fine as its micro USB connector. The quality is at least 1 billion times better than provided cables

So after several weeks trying to figure out what is wrong with my device I came to the conclusion that the USB port on my GNex went bad
here's a few reasons why:
-GNex No longer chargers when plugged in the wall outlet tried several OEM and non OEM USB cables
(but will somewhat charge if the phone is turned off but very slowly and has an error) It shows the battery icon then
it will flash twice the battery charging icon then back to the battery icon with the bolt in the middle and will do that through out the night.
Had a custom rom on there tried changing roms but my computer no longer recognized it and so i've installed removed various drivers
and tried different PC ports and nothing would let it recognize so I manually download a rom on the phone but it wouldn't install.
So I was finally able to odin back to factory stock but that still didn't do anything not only I can no longer go into recovery because it seems to
not have one so I'm stuck and it's getting on my nerves because the only way I can charge it while it's on is plugged into the computer.
I'm my money is that USB port on the phone is malfunctioning so I'm trying to relock the bootloader but can't find a through the terminal, because ADB does not work. Technically the phone still has manufacture warranty. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys
Does your computer recognize it in fast boot?

I had the exact same issue with an old T989 (T-Mo SGSII). Same symptoms and everything. What got me through the insurance claim was that I told them that the phone was doing an OTA but somehow it failed and it was stuck at the ODIN screen. What really happened was the USB port gave way while restoring to stock which caused the soft brick, but after that the USB port was completely nonfunctional. Try re-positioning the USB cable, the port might be making bad contact with the pins. Other than that, I would just ship it as is since they hardly check that the phones are rooted or in your case, an unlocked bootloader.
No it doesn't recognize it in fastboot or anything it says unknown device. As far as sending it back in I've been on the samsung website trying to request a service repair, but I've also purchased the phone on CL. But I didn't have a problem with it for several weeks so I know it really wasn't a defective unit. Yeah, I thought about reposition the USB cable to no avail.
I didn't think about using that... how did you manage to get an RMA or something to get it replaced
So you can use the device itself fine? Cab you go into play store? Download booot unlocker . it locks/unlocks the bootloader from the phone itself

Questions go in Q&A
Thread moved
Thanks
FNM
My apologies if it was in the wrong thread. Yes I'm able to use the phone fine and everything it's just the charging and recognition that's causing problems.
Another question what do I need to be able to open a repair request from samsung or how do I go about it. went to the website but all it does is take me to FAQs?
Well unfortunately boot unlocker won't work because I don't have root and I can't root my phone through ADB or anything like that because like before PCs won't recognize phone at all unless there is a method I can use through the terminal editor
I don't want to hi-jack your thread, but I am also having a similar issue.
I am running CM 10.0.0 but the cell phone will charge, but will NOT connect to the computer. I have tried two different cables and on 3 different USB ports on two different computers. I have the Samsung drivers downloaded and installed. I did not have this issue before the unlock/flash of CM. Is this is a known issue? Is there anyway around it?
I'm starting to think its a USB port issue
If it hasn't been said before, this is a very common problem, it even happens with a few Samsung phones. It's not software related, all hardware, the micro USB port is lousy.
Unless you want to work with Samsung, who, based on my experience, will probably want to charge you "because you broke it", there's the incredibly hard-to-find Pogo Dock or the inductive charging mod, which is actually kinda neat I may do that, I already have all the touchstone stuff...
There's also DIY replacement of the USB daughter board or whatever the exact term is.
In any case, Samsung *might* help you, for a decent fee and 2 weeks' (or more) time.
Yes, try to analyze USB port pins for damage, dirt, bent, anything that can cause a lousy connection (or none whatsoever)

Yeah, I mean I would have to figure something out because I can't transfer files and the only to do it is to upload them to the cloud which is not optimal and real pain.
well out of nowhere USB starting working and charging now normally. So that's cool I'm glad now just to wait till ubuntu comes out.
Hi this recently started happening again. Basically plugged my s3 in via usb. Nothing shows in my computer, but phone remains charging. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all samsung usb drivers but it does nothing. Tried installing kies/older usb drivers, still no luck. Regardless of if there are drivers or not on my pc, there is no detection what so ever. My pc was detecting my phone perfectly before. Anyone know the solution to this?
try roboot ur phone?
Tryall usb ports on the computer. Is it seen in device manager?
If so try uninstalling from thrre. Then reinstall drivrrs. Uninstall kies and don't reinstall it.

If you are using a desktop you can try to power it down, unplug the power source, reboot it then try again. If on a laptop, you can try to unplug the power source as well. As strange as it sounds, I was having a similar problem (on windows 7) and this strange fix works every time it happens to me

+1 I have bought a bunch of USB cords online, half of them will only charge but not recognize the device. I would try a different cord first.
I'd say at least try two cables, unless you can confirm one to be good by testing on another device.
Also, try on a different computer. This will at least tell you if the problem is your computer or your phone.

Yes but as I mentioned before, these cables go bad all the time. Usually wires come loose in the tiny connectors they use. Unless you somehow manage to keep it straight and flat all the time, and never pick k up your phone while it's plugged in, the cable will eventually go bad.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the cable. It was the one that came with the phone. My phone was bricked because I hadn't checked the md5 of the rom I was flashing so I thought that I had really screwed something up when I couldn't even get the phone to connect to Odin. I was about to file an insurance claim until I finally tried another cable and it worked instantly.
