Hi this recently started happening again. Basically plugged my s3 in via usb. Nothing shows in my computer, but phone remains charging. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all samsung usb drivers but it does nothing. Tried installing kies/older usb drivers, still no luck. Regardless of if there are drivers or not on my pc, there is no detection what so ever. My pc was detecting my phone perfectly before. Anyone know the solution to this?
try roboot ur phone?
Tryall usb ports on the computer. Is it seen in device manager?
If so try uninstalling from thrre. Then reinstall drivrrs. Uninstall kies and don't reinstall it.

Already tried restarting phone. The samsung drivers are not listed in device manager. I have already uninstalled kies.

Try a different USB cord. I had the same issue with an old USB cord I got off eBay, I would have to adjust the cord a certain way and keep it there for the computer to recognize my phone. I got a new cord and don't have the issue any more.

Most people would be surprised at how often these cables do go bad!
Definitely try a known good one! Don't know why that totally slipped my mind!

If you are using a desktop you can try to power it down, unplug the power source, reboot it then try again. If on a laptop, you can try to unplug the power source as well. As strange as it sounds, I was having a similar problem (on windows 7) and this strange fix works every time it happens to me

+1 I have bought a bunch of USB cords online, half of them will only charge but not recognize the device. I would try a different cord first.
I'd say at least try two cables, unless you can confirm one to be good by testing on another device.
Also, try on a different computer. This will at least tell you if the problem is your computer or your phone.

I know, I've lost count of how many cables I've gone threw since my first android device. I found one that was 3 ft. Long and charged my phone quickly, 3 months later it stopped working. I would get one from Samsung but they're too short. Its hard to find the perfect micro USB cord lol.

Yes but as I mentioned before, these cables go bad all the time. Usually wires come loose in the tiny connectors they use. Unless you somehow manage to keep it straight and flat all the time, and never pick k up your phone while it's plugged in, the cable will eventually go bad.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the cable. It was the one that came with the phone. My phone was bricked because I hadn't checked the md5 of the rom I was flashing so I thought that I had really screwed something up when I couldn't even get the phone to connect to Odin. I was about to file an insurance claim until I finally tried another cable and it worked instantly.

we have the same problem
I tried another USB cord I tried another PC my phone can't detect at any PC but I have all the drivers for my device even the other android phone still can't detect
Where did you get the Samsung drivers? Did you try other USB ports?

I just received my replacement phone from Sprint. I go to boot it up and see that it is saying USB connected and just saying it over and over, like I am plugging it in and unplugging it. This was pure stock. I go to put Cyanogen Mod back on it and it actually stopped it for a while, but it keeps coming back occasionally. The only way to stop it is to plug a charger up to it and then it stops.
Thanks,
Jaculop

Go back to stock and bring it back to sprint... seems as though lots of these phones have been having this same issue... make sure no apps are installed at all when you bring it to them so they can't blame it on an app...

i had this problem also, drives me crazy, The worst thing is this will eat my battery. All i can do is to hide the notification bar (possible if using adw launcher), but when i open an app, the notification bar appears again.
Done anything like back to stock ec05, repartition etc, etc. But now im on MTD and at first the problem with usb is still there, but now it is completely gone, wtf
It may be gunk in your USB port. Look inside with a magnifying glass.

uh, not to scare you or anything, but you don't clean any ports on a cell phone with a damp cloth, it will do harm to it. take a toothbrush that has never been used before and gently brush the port. then blow into the port to remove debri (small particles), then try it.

i'm trying to isolate the problem,
interesting thing is, i found when i plug a mini-usb to micro usb converter (just the converter, not connected to anything), the notification seems stopped, but when i unplug the converter, it shows again.

seems not, i use the cable to charge my Desire HD with no problem..
I'm opening the converter apart, it is just mini-usb 2 cables soldered to the maybe VBUS and ground micro usb, so this is a charger cable, the data pin was shorted, maybe this is why the notification stopped ?

Hi,
my usb connection is pretty screwed up, it only charges and windows doesnt recognize the device anymore, It says the device malfunctioned ... ODIN doesnt recognize the phone anymore also. I would like to know if there is a way for me to return to a complete stock version of my phone for warranty purpose without a working usb connection. I have a Telus version of the sgh-t989, and tried with different computers, different usb cables, bought new samsung oem cables, but nothing works, and it used to work before.
Also I saw in the market this Mobile ODIN Pro witch can do the same tasks as the pc connected ODIN. Overall as good feedback but some reviews I saw stated the it messed up the phone and needed regular ODIN to fix it, and thats currently not an option for me.
My phone as CWM recovery and is rooted.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver?
Edit: the usb driver found here: m.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-T989ZKBTMB

Yes, even tried on a clean windows install twice,
After all your troubleshooting I'm inclined to think you have defective hardware
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
I saw somewhere, this zip file that you flash in CWM, its called ''SGH-T989-UnRoot_ROM_Zedomax.zip'' wich unroots and restocks, but its for t-mobile, wondering if there is such a file for telus maybe
Im pretty sure as well that my problem is hardware, since it used to work without any problems on my 3 computers, and now doesnt.
My phone is still under warranty, thats why I want to bring it back completely stock to get it fixed or replaced.
I love this phone, and is in mint condition besides this usb problem
Does the USB port on your phone seem solid? No jiggling etc? Dust free? With you trying different cables and computers with proper drivers its probably safe to assume your phone is the problem...have you verified those cables handle data? I've seen some cables that just supply a 5 volt charge...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using XDA
I tried the usb cables with other phones, and there is no problem with them.
I cleaned the usb port at the bottom of my phone with a dry toothbrush.
The port itself is solid but not like it used to be, if I wiggle the cable while its charging , it will stop charging until I put the phone down and stop moving it, then it will restart charging again.
Im pretty sure the problem itself is the port, thats why Im looking for a solution the get back to stock , so i can get this fixed before the port stops charging the phone also ... And then Im really screwed
So today was at PC with my nexus and the PC has seemed to have forgotten the drivers (windows 7 ultimate 32 bit) so tryied to reinstall them. It seems my PC thinks the stock USB cable is a device and won't recognise it (phone not connected to other end) therefore can't see my gnex when plugged in. I tried another cable which the phone connected as media device but not seen by PC.
So now the weird thing after trying to sort out the drivers for a while when I plug the phone to PC the phone powers off instantly just like a battery pull and won't turn on until battery pull. I tried this several times with the same results. I then tried to charge through mains and it works.
Wtf is up with this?

Just to update you guys this issue has now been fixed. I bought a brand new official Samsung USB cable and it works correctly. Adb and boot loader driver and interfaces all working fine.
I do how ever really recommend an official Samsung ac charger and official Samsung USB cable, the connector which plugs into the phone fits so much better, there is no play where the connector can move, it sits absolutely solid and the quality is much better than the cables provided with the phone.

Off Amazon for roughly £2.99 and the USB was around £1.19. Search Samsung android charger, chances are the item description with say for Samsung galaxy i9000 (sgs1) but it works fine as its micro USB connector. The quality is at least 1 billion times better than provided cables

Ya its strange..I tried each n everything including cleaning ports and changing too!! The most weird part is except my GNEX, all my other devices works fine
I have been dealing with this very same issue for about a month.
So far, without any success, I've tried:
- connecting my gnex to computers running windows 8, windows 7 and Ubuntu. (Removed and reinstalled all drivers using multiple routes.. Gnex toolkit, Samsung drivers, pdanet etc.)
- I've cleaned the USB port multiple times (gentle toothpick, canned air, rubbing alcohol)
- I've disassembled the phone and very carefully removed the USB flex cable to check for damaged ribbon cables.
- reverted to stock ROM
- tried both CWM and TWRP recoveries
I'm now out of ideas. However, there is a replacement USB flex cable on amazon for roughly $7. This is my next and probably final option as I'm no longer on contract with any service provider and use my gnex as a WiFi/sip device.

Is your problem fixed now?
One more weird situation has begun..my gnex charges itself(even though i haven't connected any charger)..it actually doesn't charges but it seems as if i am really charging it! This happens after every few minutes..
No. Still without success. Have not yet ordered the replacement part.
If your biggest issue is transferring files though, there are several apps like Google drive and dropbox that can come in handy as well as file explorers that allow network access over WiFi (I'm about to us ES file explorer to transfer a 2gb file... Hopefully)
From what I've read here on xda and elsewhere, this issue will likely lead to a complete failure of the USB port, meaning no charge either. Best of luck to you that this doesn't happen.
**edit - if you are already rooted, be careful not to undo it, because I've not found a way to root without USB. Also, there is ADB over WiFi, I just haven't messed with it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Exactly ! i am facing the same situation i.e. sometimes my phone charges and sometimes doesn't..even when connecting to computer ,adb doesn't work and it may charge the phone sometimes..
Is my gnex's USB port damaged or is it software related issue?

What does "phantom charge" means?
By phantom charge, I mean that symptom you described of your phone saying it is charging even when it is not plugged in.
I have ruled out software issue for my phone, and likely your phone as well but that is your decision. To me, this is definitely a hardware issue.
The part I linked to is twice as expensive as I remember. Perhaps do some more searching for a better price.

Hi, So I've found that computers aren't recognizing my phone. I've made sure its in MTP mode. Drivers and the multiple computers I tried were up to date. The device does charge but no data? My device is softbricked and it's making it difficult to recover because no computer will see the phone. Any help is appreciated.
Cords, cords, cords, and then try another cord. This is, by far, the pickiest phone I've had with chargers. Most of the one I've been using for years give me a slow charging icon on my LGOG. Good luck

I'd guess that your charging port is broken. I had that problem, sent it to LG, and they fixed it for $45 (even though it was under warranty; I was very upset). And now I have this problem again, only a couple weeks later. It doesn't matter which USB cord I use, and I have over a dozen.
I'm beginning to hate this phone.
Not sure what it is, but we only have one of our 5 laptops that can pick up either of our LGOGs.
