Broken USB Port? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I have a feeling my USB port is broken. It suddenly wouldn't mount to my computer. I tried a different computer, same thing. I tried to reflash my rom, same thing. And now the charging is wonky at best.
I'm just wondering what my options were. I bought this phone outright myself. So I don't have a warranty. What do I do?
EDIT: Seems that charging is working fine... just my usb connection is gone. Any ideas?

I am also having this problem. USB charges fine but shows nothing when connected via usb to any of my PCs or a macbook air. mounts>USB Computer connection is set to Mass Storage and I have tried switching to MTP / PTP and back. It will not connect as any of these. I have tried rebooting both machines. I am running TeamChopsticks CM9 Beta 1 (7/15/2012) and noticed this problem when I tried to connect to update to the latest version of this ROM. I have not yet tried flashing other ROMs. Rebooting into download mode works, but even from within download mode when plugged in to the computer it does not connect.

I'm having the same issue. I bought the phone used from a Guy that works in a flour plant and flour was caked in every cranny, including the USB to the point the charger wouldn't fit. I've since cleaned it out, and it charges now, but doesn't connect. There are also weird issues with the car Home turning on randomly, which I read somewhere is somehow connected to faulty USB ports (maybe the car mount has an extra pin or something rather than the magnet mechanism of other phones). At any rate, i ordered a new port on eBay for just $7 including shipping, i might take a while before i have the time to install it, but I'll report back if it fixes the problem.

LOL a flour plant? If it ever gets wet, don't use a blow dryer on it, you might end up with a loaf of bread not a brick hehe

I 'm having the same problem as stated above. To anwser your question no, nothing pops up. Please help. I don't think it's a rom problem.
It might be a hardware issue. Try a different USB cable. Also try looking at the USB connector inside the phone with a magnifying glass, to see if any pins look out of place. Different pins are used for the charging as opposed to data (syncing).
Disable your firewall
90% chance this will solve your connectivity issues.
I'm using ESET Smart Security suite, and it's firewall is known to interfere with Windows Mobile phones...
cheers

This. Happened to me.
At one time it was thinking TV-out was connected all the time, ARGH!
I fixed it but still, a lot of times it won't sync but will show up in explorer.
Never had firewall issues, though?

How can you tell if it thinks it's in TV out mode? How do you fix.
I'm having the same issue, within the last few weeks USB for activesync or mass storage doesn't seem to work any more. Charging is fine though, as is the headset for radio.
it happens when you don't have active sync installed. if you have active sync installed try using diff. usb port on your pc.
Go into Start > Settings > Connections > USBtoPC.
Uncheck the box that says "Enable faster data synchronization."
Press Done at the bottom and try again.
Both I and a friend had this happen to us at relatively the same time. I'd read another owner that had RMA'd their phone for this issue and was told it was because of their car charger. My friend and I had taken a trip and had both used my charger, which involved turning the car on while plugged in. We were both under warranty, so we got our phones replaced.
To my knowledge, there has been hardware damage and the data part of the connection will not work again.
Another symptom was that the battery was discharging rapidly. If you notice this, you're probably looking at needing a replacement.

The phone will show a TV-out screen asking you to pick PAL or NTSC video output mode.

What happen here was that the pins got slowly bent out of shape and could not maintain contact and were some times making a short.
I fixed it with some sharp end tweezers and a needle.

Evo's speaker phone always on when making calls/answering

My Evo recently started to answers the phone with the speaker phone enabled. Its super irritating as I have to click on the speaker phone for it to go back to normal. I googled online and some people say removing the battery works. However, i tried it but it still answers with the speaker phone on.
What rom setup are you using, I had the same problem using deck's 1.0 GB rom with sz 2.1.0 kernel. I did a full wipe and fresh install and the problem went away... its worth a try.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Im running Fresh v3.5.0.1 and netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-nosbc-havs-less-universal-signed kernel.
Im in the process of backing up all my data to do a factory wipe and moving to MikFroYo v4.62. Hope its a software glitch and not hardware.
Just did a factory wipe (2x's), then cleared cache/davik (2x's) to be safe. Then installed MikFroYo v4.62. On first boot it goes directly to Car Dock. Im beginning to think its a hardware problem as I read online car dock runs when there is a short on the usb pins.
Unrooted and rolled back to the stock Sprint RUU. Everything is stock and it still has this speaker/car dock problem. I found this video on google and they talk about a DIY car dock usb cable. Apparently, car dock activates when pins 4 & 5 on the usb cable is shorted. Normally, Pin 4 is not used and Pin 5 is ground.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsshBuX-DfQ
In a normal USB cable, the wires are connected to the pins in a specific order.
For example:
Pin Name Cable color Description
1 VCC Red +5 VDC
2 D- White USB Data -
3 D+ Green USB Data +
4
5 GND Black Ground
So, with a micro usb cabled plugged into the phone I wiggle the usb connector and sure enough car dock fires up. Definetly a hardware issue. I hope Sprint will fix this one under the HTC 1yr warranty.
I believe it to be a hardware issue as well. My Evo started having this issue last week. Annoying as all hell but after trying different kernels and Roms and having no luck i started looking online for answers.
I tried cleaning the port and no luck.
I have a aftermarket plain Jane normal USB cord then i have an adapter that goes from normal USB (like BB Pearl) to mini USB for the Evo and its the only thing that will snap it out of the car mode. But only while its plugged in it will snap out of it.
If i unplug it or try using stock USB cord then it goes back into the car mode/ speaker phone frenzy/ cant use volume controls for playing music on ear phones.
This is a launch day Evo so its seen its fair share of bumps/ drops/ wear n tear but as of yesterday its after that 1 year mark. Not sure if they would warranty it now.
But alas, if they dont then i suppose i can use the insurance.
Ill keep this thread updated if i find anything solid that works.
Thanks,
wrong thread sorry.
Sprint replaced my phone under the hardware warranty ($35). I think it had to do with my phone looking like brand new with no scratches and stuff. Either way the shop said they never experienced the speaker phone problem but they usually get the bad usb port from users who cant charge.
Hey Sonjiin - Since you have also have a launch day phone. Today makes 1yr. Take it in and see if they will replace it. Good Luck!
I tried cleaning the port with Electronics contact cleaner and a cotton swab and like an idiot i used a bit to much and it got under the screen. The thing still works like a champ but it still didnt fix my issue. I ended up claiming Insurance on it. Ill be getting my replacement phone sometime today.

Good find on that man. I work in a Sprint service center and I tried replacing the charging port with a new one and it did the trick! Never would have guessed it to be a charging port issue. I would say it is either that, or if the solder on the ports bridges the connection between the 4th and 5th pin, shorting them out. Either way, that definitely fixed the problem. Great find. Thanks button has been clicked.
This is a very old thread, but there are TONS of them across the web with zero solutions... so if someone else should search for this like I did, I want to save them the trouble.
I was also having the problem that my phone would jump into dock mode constantly, and forcefully removing the dock app did little to help. While the speakerphone issue is annoying, the WORST part was that it kept turning on my screen randomly, and it leaves the screen on.
Anyway, the fix is to use an app called NoDock by NOTHIZE. You need to be rooted, but if you're not rooted, what the hell are you doing here?!?! It completely removed the issue for me, which is incredible. They do have a trial version that you can test for 7 days before you buy it, but they kind of have you over the barrel on this one: I tried a few other Play Store apps with no success.
And if you see this exact post a few places on the internet, it's because I'm just active enough to try to help others (I'm pretty excited right now that this is fixed) but I'm too lazy to do any major editing of my comments.
Easy Fix
I think I just figured it out. Free some space on your darn phone. Lol. Delete some of your text messages (Especially if you have conversations saved with 200+ messages). Move your big apps to you SD card (ex: Angry birds at 29+ Meg). Then pull the battery. Put the battery back in. Fixed my Evo.
I hope I'm as lucky as you.

[Q] Broken Usb Port

Is there any way to replace the USB port for cheap in the T989? My phone charges but I can't connect to my pc unless I bend the port up. The fix is temporary however. I really appreciate any help, thanks!
try to put the usb in rice i did my was broke it connection like amillion time but never holds the connection and the rice worked
Use a tooth brush and scrub it. You might have dirt in the port which is preventing you from having a clean connection

Sorry but I don't get it. Do you mean to put the hone in rice? How would that help?
Have you tried a different cable? I had one that wouldn't do anything without being held up.

Did you check if the phone is still under warranty?
I did a warranty exchange for loose usb port connection and I bought my phone off of Craigslist.
I called T-Mobile, they looked it up and they charged me $20 warranty exchange fee and sent me another phone.

Bringing this back because I'm having same problem. Dropped it in the sink but quickly took it out. Everything works perfect. Phone charges fine. The problem is it does not want to connect as Mass Storage anymore. I've tried three different roms and all the same thing. I just bought a charger usb port from eBay for about $5. I'm guessing that the problem. My question is, is it soldered? Can't really tell. Advice would be appreciated.

I know this is from a long time ago, but did you solve this? I'm having the exact same problem.
My phone got wet in a downpour. I thought I had it dried out because it initially wouldn't charge, but after leaving it in a bag with silica packets overnight the charging ability was restored. A couple days later I realized that any other usb functions didn't work. I cleaned out the port with WD40 as was recommended elsewhere to help eliminate moisture and remove some corrosion - mass storage still won't work and can't use Odin. I have tried multiple cables, multiple USB ports, different computers, reinstalled drivers. I'm sure none of these options worked because it is a problem with the micro-USB port on the phone.
Thanks!

[Q] OTG Cable stopped working on Galaxy Note 2

So I've had my OTG cables (eBay/Amazon) for quite some time now. A couple of days ago it just stopped working. I was using it to transfer files from thumb drive to/from the phone. My buddy has the exact phone I do Galaxy Note 2 and both cables I have work fine on his phone but not on mine? Phone detects that the OTG is inserted with the usual "USB Connector Connected" notification but when a USB memory stick is inserted it will not show the "USB MASS Storage" notification and I can't see the memory stick in file manager. Occasionally (1 in 20 tries) and after a reboot, it will see the stick and allow me to explore the contents. I have tried 2 different cables that used to work fine with my phone and several USB sticks that also used to work and still do work on my buddies phone.
All other functionality of the phone remains perfect as it is fairly new. Charging through USB works fine, transferring data from USB to PC also works fine. I have looked into the port with a magnifying glass and it is clean and shows no signs of debris or pocket lint and the cable has a good feel when it is inserted. Positive click.
I tried to do a restore factory settings today and still it's totally hit and miss with either OTG cable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Wow 60 views and not one suggestion. Guess this must not be a common thing at all.
I just tried it and works fine for me. Maybe try a different rom or custom kernel and see if it works then...I really dont have any suggestions

:silly: "Bonk on the head!" I just remembered that several weeks ago while using a 2-port cigarette lighter to charge my Note 2 and iPad at the same time resulted in a funny burning smell. I took apart this charger (Amazon) and it was fried and melted on inside and obviously was of questionable quality. I guess at the time I didn't think anything of it because both the iPad and GN2 work and charge and sync perfectly well.
I've ordered a replacement charging port. Looks dead simple to change and phone itself looks much easier to take apart than the iPhone was. I found a site that sells the OEM charge port. I picked up an extra headphone jack as well since they are cheap. Yesterday while phone was charging in car, it woke up several times with the sound indicating a charger had been plugged in even though the cable was already plugged in securely.
I have also purchased the OEM Samsung OTG USB cable that was available for the Galaxy S2. I realize that the GN2 micro USB port has 11 pins but from what I have read the extra pins are for MHL HDMI output and there is no 11 pin OTG cable in existence but the port on the GN2 is backward compatible with 5 pin USB OTG.
Fixed
Today I pulled the phone apart and fixed the charging port USB OTG problem. Both cables that I have now are in working state.
This repair was VERY easy and took about 15min. with proper tools.

OP said it was a hardware issue for him. OP said replacing the small pc board and ribbon cable with the Micro USB port on it fixed the issue for him. I have replaced the USB port on my wife's Note 2 in the past (for a different reason, that is stopped charging.) It is a relatively easy repair, if you have the correct tools. You have to take the phone completely apart to replace the board, so you will need the small plastic tool to separate the bezel, as well as a small screw driver. There are walk through videos available.
If you decide to try this, avoid buying a cheap part. I bought a replacement part for about $5.00 from an e-bay supplier, but the company sent me two of them, and neither one worked. I bought a good one from and would recommend ETradeSupply out of Texas. That link is for the exact part. You will also pay for shipping, but it will be a good part. You can also buy the tools you need there if you want.

[Q] a BRAND NEW kind of charging problem

Before everyone starts accusing me of not running a simple search, take it easy, been done. And yet, nothing to help me on the matter.
So here's the thing:
Her phone won't charge. Not when plugged into the wall, BUT when I plug her phone into the computer it is recognized and allows file transfer and everything, but just that - it still won't charge.
Here's what I've found out so far:
- Not a problem with the charger: I'm using the original charger, and it works flawlessly on my own Gnex running PA 4.4
- Nothing wrong with the battery: swap batteries between phones, my phone works fine with her battery, her phone still won't charge.
- When her phone is completely OFF and I plug it in to my PC, it plays the sound of connecting and disconnecting a device, and prompts that it doesn't recognize the USB device. If I tap the power button for a second while it's off (not holding it long enough for it to turn on), it does the same thing connecting-then-disconnecting sounds and "doesn't recognize the USB device".
So - has anyone ever run into this problem before? Know how to fix it? I know the chances are it's just a hardware malfunction, but it's weird because of the ability to transfer files- usually the problem is the reverse.
In the meantime we're using my phone as a charger for both batteries untill we get the spares and wall charger we ordered, but it's a real pain.
Just trying to find a better solution than taking apart the phone and try and fix it or just ordering a new Nexus 5 (which is tempting, but don't really have the money to spend on it...)

Its the micro USB port the pins are bent homie.
Some pins allow charging some allow data transfer. The ones for charging are damaged in your case.

Yup. Just this moment after a really really really close examination of the port and comparing it to my own phone, one tiny half a millimeter peice of metal is bent out of place and broken. Gotta order a new port ASAP and try and change it.
Thanks mate!

Back with worse news. Just replaced my wife's micro USB port on her i9250 GNex, and.... same thing. Still won't charge, computer recognizes it. Now I'm completely baffled. Thought for a moment that maybe I had been such a fool as to have put back in the old port, but unfortunately, it wasn't my stupidity.
Ideas, anyone?
