A decent case... too much to ask? - Galaxy S II Accessories

I want to get a vertical flip case for an S2. I have spent ages looking online and reading reviews. It would appear to be wishful thinking that I might find one that
- has a clasp or magnet to keep it shut
- has a hole for the charger, so you can charge it with the case closed
just finding a case that meets these requirements seems to be impossible. How hard can it be? Just in case anyone can come up with a suggestion, the following would also be good, based on reading reviews
- clasp does not block headphone socket
- easy to get to buttons
- does not add significant bulk
- doesn't take a crowbar to open if the phone is ringing

otterbox defender case!

Just browsed around Otterbox's site and boom! They finally have the defender case! It won't come cheap at $90
www.otterbox.com/MOTOROLA-XOOM-Defe...OM1_color=20&start=1&cgid=motorola-xoom-cases
this will have a built in kick stand; so as soon as I deal with the whole sending the Xoom to get upgraded and such, then I plan to get this ultimate case since the whole point of having this one is to take it on a road and definitely make some usage as a hotspot device.

That's exactly what I'm looking for! Awesome!!
I saw this in action at CTIA today, had great construction as usual Otterboxes, but I have these issues with it...
1) No 'folder' style for 'front' protection when in a briefcase/etc.
2) they didn't address the poor charger location by allowing a prop up
It's a great product if you like the open face style, but IMO, when storing it during travels - a screen protector isn't always enough. Personally- I'll hold out for a folio with an integrated KB.
I saw one distributer that had a magnetic bluetooth keyboard with folio; it fit the xoom perfectly. Unfortunately he didn't sell direct. He's looking for a bulk purchase and will let me know what reseller he finds. I'll post more info in a seperate thread when that happens.

I thought the outer layer (with the stand) can be taken out and attached to the front? That should cover the screen during travelling.
Me no like, too bulky and hard - its not a phone for christs sake!
Xoom is more of a laptop with its weight and size... and how often have you dropped your laptop?

Are guys going to get it now or wait till after the hardware upgrade?

Hm..
Well, My Xoom needs protection just as much protection now as it will after the LTE upgrade. My vote goes to getting it when its released.
Ah there's a youtube video on a prototype of the case.
Should answer some of your questions.

I'm actually more interested in details about the portfolio with the keyboard (I know this thread is about the Otterbox but the news got me excited)

Incipio premium kickstand case - stupid magnets!

Why do these manufacturers insist on putting magnets in a case that holds a gps device with magnetic compass?! This completely throws off the compass heading and probably affects navigation too. The Incipio kickstand case is pretty nice, even if it does add a little too much bulk. I may just write the company and request a replacement case that does not have magnets, or otherwise try to remove the magnets myself.
Rob
Well I'm about to get a case for mine, had been looking at one with magnets... Thanks for this thread, I wasn't aware magnets would cause such problems. One would assume that case manufacturers know what they are doing... geez.

There is definitely a good chance that the magnets would interfere with the compass. Incipio replied and offered to exchange the case for one of their other ones, but I really like their folio case even if it's a bit thick. You are right though, the manufacturers need to be more aware that putting magnets in a tablet case is a big no-no! I don't know how much an inaccurate compass reading would affect navigation, but it does affect initial heading position when you get a gps fix. The compass in the xoom works really well though and doesn't always need calibrating like some others. Yet in a car with all that metal it can still throw the compass off..... I am just debating on attempting to remove the magnets from the case or just leaving it alone.
Rob
Yeah it's really hard to find a good case that doesn't use magnets... I still haven't decided which one to get because of that lol.
One question came to me earlier - are you sure that the Xoom has a magnetic compass at all? I really don't know, when I first read your post it made sense, but now that I think about it - isn't the compass simply using two consecutive GPS positions (i.e. "1 second ago" + "right now") to determine the vector / direction of travel?
Apart from that, I'm not questioning the effect of magnets on computer hardware in general. I don't think that a magnet as tiny as the ones they build into cases could have any ill effect on hardware though.
It would be great if someone could chime in who has made an experience (good or bad) with a magnetic case - or maybe shed some more light on this...

Car holder whilst using a case

I'm after a car holder for my HTC One whereby I don't have to take the phone out of the case as it's annoying and I'd like something quick and easy to use.
I've bought a few from Amazon for my HTC One X but they were rubbish, flimsy or just didn't stick to the windscreen.
So I'm after some personal experiences too, has anyone bought a car holder for their One that you don't have to take it out of the case to use and does it work well?
Somewhere I can buy it from in the UK
Something like this I bought for my HOX but it just didn't work very well. Might give it a go since it's only £2.
My friends in the UK use this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mountek-nGr...e=UTF8&qid=1372679295&sr=8-1&keywords=Mountek
I just ordered one this morning and am expecting to receive it in a week to ten days since I am in Egypt. My friends have had it for a long time now and they tell me that it's amazing and the quality is extremely durable to this day.
Some of them also use a combination of two items: this and this. The first one has a sticky pad which is very, very strong and just doesn't fade, they tell me it's as strong as the day they bought it and they use the second item sometimes, basically they attach it to the sticky pad and use it as an actual car mount.
The second suggestion isn't the most practical but it works well and is fairly cheap, however the Mountek one is just perfect; not only did I read good reviews about it and was it recommended by friends, but I also watched videos and I find it great.

I can highly recommend this one…
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/supergrip-universal-case-compatible-car-mount-p30552.htm
It will hold just about any phone in either portrait or landscape. Its suction pad even sticks to mottled, textured dashboard surfaces. Naturally it holds to glass like a limpet. Beware of the cheaper Amazon look-a-likes that have an inferior sucker.
It is very quick to attach and remove your phone, and doesn’t smother the phone’s back so the phone still gets air cooling (mine gets very hot charging and using sat nav). I think it looks ok too.
Thanks both, much appreciated. I'll check both of these out.
@wnp_79 - What's the pressure like on your car holder, in respect to it looks like it's spring loaded so I'm worried that it might put too much pressure on the sides of the phone, if that makes sense?

It is spring loaded, but does not hold the phone with any more pressure than you would use holding it yourself. The only issue I've had is with certain cases (like the Otterbox Commuter) which have protruding volume buttons. The grip is enough to accidentally activate these if you are not careful where you place the phone. With flush buttons or ensuring the grip misses them there's no issues.

Yes this one works wonderfully. I thought it a little to simple at first... But simple wins here. It'll even work with future phones. You can install and remove phone one handed and of course cases work. Only bad thing is no dedicated charging... But i got over that quick.

Case orientation re: charge while using

This is a major pain for me at work. I use this tablet constantly for note taking, sharing network maps, etc. The battery drains a lot during the day so I like to charge and use quite frequently. Sadly, no case that I have seen or used has the kickstand oriented so that the charging port is on top. This makes leaving it in the default kickstand orientation very clumsy for charging the tablet.
Right now I have the Moko slimline case and I love it, except for the above mentioned issue. From what I could tell watching a video review of the Book Cover case, the same issue applies. Has anyone seen or used a case that orients the charging port on the top when in kickstand mode?
Thanks
Im using the poetic slimline case, and although it wont do it normally, I just flipped the tablet around in the case and stood it up. This way the charging port is on top.
No issues other than you can't access the stylus, so if you need that just take it out first. Also, obviously cant use the rear facing camera.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I tried that with my moko slim case, but when I flip the tablet around the settings button is covered by the case and rendered useless sadly. Otherwise it would have been a great solution as the other buttons that were covered are easy enough to operate through the material of the cover, just not the back or settings button.

Tucano Youngster 10.1.
It's a universal case holding the tablet with rubber bands at the edges, which doesn't look much nice, but such is life.
The occasional app might need an app like"Rotation", which supports enforced autorotation. Then you still have the nav buttons on top, but you knew that. Fitting the tablet the wrong way allows to hold the case one-handed easily, stick the thumb thru the sling at the zipper and grab the right side of the case. This however works better with the 7" version of the case, which i also use.

Why doesn't this case exist?

I've spent the better part of the week scouring for good s8+ cases that would be compatible with wireless charging and in the end I've hodge podged pieces into a frankencase
seeing as I'm probably going to make myself a case I thought I'd share the elements of what I was looking for and ask if I'm just crazy for wanting so much or if I'm not alone.
I don't need much coverage, mostly the corners and a raised edge in case it does fall but otherwise I'm not concerned with protecting the fronts and backs given how rarely I drop my phone if I've got an actual grip on it no thanks to the slippery materials they use
I'd like direct access to my buttons, many cases have their own button that pushes the actual button, I've never enjoyed this as it's usually stiff or hard to press and often hard to distinguish from the case itself
wireless compatibility is a must for me given the fact I'm not only on the road most of the day but I'm constantly in and out of the vehicle where I'm definitely not leaving my phone that I'll probably actually need, and having to work a harness gets annoying during regular use imagine 30+ times a day
this means something magnetic so it sticks in place like the airdock 2 which I have no idea if it's compatible with s8+ or not as of yet
getting back to the in and out I need a hip holster because I spend way more time texting and taking photos of job sites than talking so a headset is less important than not having to fish for my phone
lanyards are just good ideas, why is it so rare to find them let alone on a rugged case?
a kickstand doesn't have to be complicated either and doesn't need an entire phone length if you know what you're doing with it, spigeon has a nice stick on that generally gets the job done, or even those ring mounts double as kickstands and great dash magnet mounts
who puts a card holder behind the case right in the magnetic field of wireless charging? it's called a folio cover geez, even those work as kickstands in a pinch as flimsy as they are in that capacity.
granted with all the mobile payment options these days you generally don't need to worry about a card in the first place so it's coming time to uncouple those two
and on a side rant why are we still using adapters and converters for magnetic break away cables? shouldn't this be standardized by now?
I'm going to sketch up the case I'm thinking of and post back maybe you guys can tell me why it's such a ridiculous idea to have.
I wanted the equivalent of an iBolt with a wireless charger in the end I wireless charge at home and use a magnetic power connector on the car.
All the ones I found only gave portrait and I preferred to use landscape
What car charger are you using?

I'm looking to buy still, just got my s8+ a couple weeks ago, with the unveiling of the note8 I almost took it back
as of right now for in the car I'm using https://www.amazon.com/BESTEK-300W-Power-Inverter-Adapter/dp/B004MDXS0U/ with cables
not sure I want to have to add in something to a case to make it compatible I'd rather the case be compatible to begin with, many magnetic chargers work just fine without add ins
https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/10wBkiHyNDZF969vzCDtKLQ8TI5XLnB5wJ3GOLJJhA-8/edit?usp=sharing
basically just imagine some time on the dremel to cut out everything covering up the back as much as possible except maybe leaving a bit near the edges
if I have the ring it'll be near the power button
and the kickstand will be probably above the camera or down by the fcc text, very small chance I do it vertical by the bixby button
pair it with a belt clip, and maybe something like a folio cover under the screws if I do feel like having cards
if I can do this with existing parts and a dremel why can't one of these case makers?
I'm trying to figure out how I would do a swivel like the ring but with something as long as a kickstand for more angle options, found one custom stent on a case that could work, not sure yet if that's how I want to do it?
figured it out, answer is no kickstand, there's 3 places I legit need a kickstand and I can just get stands and put them there
apparently there isn't much of a phone case modding scene I can find.... does everyone just live with the cases they buy? can't everything be improved with some ingenuity?
My new case, ticks most of the boxes
