Case orientation re: charge while using - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Accessories

This is a major pain for me at work. I use this tablet constantly for note taking, sharing network maps, etc. The battery drains a lot during the day so I like to charge and use quite frequently. Sadly, no case that I have seen or used has the kickstand oriented so that the charging port is on top. This makes leaving it in the default kickstand orientation very clumsy for charging the tablet.
Right now I have the Moko slimline case and I love it, except for the above mentioned issue. From what I could tell watching a video review of the Book Cover case, the same issue applies. Has anyone seen or used a case that orients the charging port on the top when in kickstand mode?
Thanks

Im using the poetic slimline case, and although it wont do it normally, I just flipped the tablet around in the case and stood it up. This way the charging port is on top.
No issues other than you can't access the stylus, so if you need that just take it out first. Also, obviously cant use the rear facing camera.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I tried that with my moko slim case, but when I flip the tablet around the settings button is covered by the case and rendered useless sadly. Otherwise it would have been a great solution as the other buttons that were covered are easy enough to operate through the material of the cover, just not the back or settings button.

I miss the magnetic pogo plug we had for the Nexus 10.

Tucano Youngster 10.1.
It's a universal case holding the tablet with rubber bands at the edges, which doesn't look much nice, but such is life.
The occasional app might need an app like"Rotation", which supports enforced autorotation. Then you still have the nav buttons on top, but you knew that. Fitting the tablet the wrong way allows to hold the case one-handed easily, stick the thumb thru the sling at the zipper and grab the right side of the case. This however works better with the 7" version of the case, which i also use.

Tetrax Magnet Mount for Galaxy Nexus

Has anybody tried the tetrax mounts yet with their galaxy nexus? Before I purchase one I'm curious of two things.
1. How well does the the magnet stick to the battery door since the battery cover is textured? I have an extra cover that I'll use simply for this.
2. Does the magnet interfere with the NFC and/or screen at all?
In case your not sure what I'm referring to:
http://store.tetrax.us/xway-line/fixway
I have used this on other phones, including my G2, MyTouch 3G and G1 and it worked very well on all those phones. However, due to the textured back on the Galaxy Nexus, the metal button that stick to the battery door does not stay on. I have tried replacing the double sided tape with stronger automotive 3M tape, but that doesn't work either. It'll stay on for a little while and come back off. The only solution would be to find a battery door that is smooth.
I can't answer if it interferes with NFC or the screen, but it shouldn’t. If anything, it might interfere with the magnet on the compass, but that has not been the case with my other phones.

Thanks,
So you've actually tried it on the GNex and it don't stick very well? Did you by chance try holding it on there for several hours with a strong clamp or anything? I really want one of these but worried it's a waste of money with this phone
I have actually tried it, but not with a clamp. Just following the regular directions. On my other phones, it created a very strong bond and it takes a lot of effort to remove. With the Nexus, it stays on the first couple of times you mount it, but that's about it. It's not an issue with the weight, as the G2 feels twice as heavy as the Nexus, especially with an extra capacity battery. It's the texture on the battery door. It almost feels like it has a Teflon coating.

Would you mind holding up one of the magnets to the battery door and test out the NFC to see if it interferes with it (if you have the ability to). This is my main question as I could always put the magnet on a case I guess.
Thanks!
I don't have another NFC device to try it right now, but my brother has the Nexus S and I can try it when I see him later tonight. The magnet doesn't go on the battery door though. What you stick on the battery door is just a piece of metal. The actual magnet is on the device that you mount to your dash or vent, so unless you plan on using NFC while it's on your dash, it should not interfere.
Plus, NFC uses low power radio frequency to transfer information (similar to Bluetooth). It does not use magnets. The only thing in the phone that could be affected would be the compass, as it finds your relation to magnetic North. Even then, I'm sure the compass works through software and is not an actual magnet, as it has never affected GPS. As a matter of fact, I have 2 Tetrax products, the one that mounts to the dash, which I have in my car, and the one that you attach to the vent for when I use a rental on trips for the sole purpose of Navigation. As you can imagine, I was very disappointed when I could not get the metal button to stick. I might have to try it with a case also.

Awesome so yea I don't think it'll interfere because I was thinking the part you stick to the back of the phone is magnetic, but if your saying it's not all should be well. Either way I went ahead and ordered it yesterday anyway so I'll figure out a way to get it to stick to either the door or a case. Thanks for your insight!
Nope, it's just a metal button. It actually comes with 4 or 5 different ones of all sizes and styles.
I have this installed on my nexus, I put the mount on my dash and the NFC sticker on my knob for the ac that get covered up. Everytime I put my phone on the mount, the nfc changes it to car mode, volume up, full brightness and launches sirius xm radio...works very well, sometimes I have to move it a bit to get to read the nfc, but thats only cause i have the nfc a little too far at the bottom of the phone and it mounts at a slight angle, not due to any interference at all. I have NFC chips all around and never have problems reading them at all, probably a good idea not to mount the metal chip right in the middle of the battery area, just in case. I also used a clamp to hold it on for about 3 or 4 hours and has had little trouble sticking to the texture.
I have had a few incidents if I pull off the phone, rather than slide it off the backing will actually unclip a single clip.
@ejkeebler what do you mean by NFC stickers all around? Did you make stickers to automatically change your settings on your phone? That's brilliant! How did you do it?
I might also have to try a clamp. I don't really want to put a case on my phone.

I also have NFC stickers everywhere. have them when I walk in the front door of my house, one in my office at work, one in each vehicle, one in my wallet LOL. They are awesome. Set them to change settings or do tasker tasks and you can rewrite over them if you ever want to change anything. One of the best phone features I've ever used. That's why i was concerned about the magnets interfering with the NFC!

www.tagstand.com to purchase the tags. Tell him DCoy82 sent you! The 30mm ultralight c circle NDEF formatted seem to be the only ones I've bought that work with the nexus so far.
Once you get them you can download program called NFC Task Launcher off the market to program them.

That is so awesome. This is my first phone with NFC so I'm barely starting to learn all the cool things that you can do with it. I tried Android Beam for the first time with my brother on Tuesday and it works great, though I wish you could beam other things such as pictures. By the way, the metal button does not interfere with NFC. I will let them know that you recommended me. Thank you!
If your interested in NFC, here's a few spots that got me started
http://androidforums.com/nexus-s/336155-what-do-you-use-nfc-tasker.html
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/weekend_project_make_your_own_nfc_tags.php
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnqmyNEQPq0&feature=email&email=comment_reply_received
and the tags I bought were from here:
http://tagsfordroid.com/tags/Home.html
I got them cause i liked the having the android on them, i think they are a tiny bit less expensive elsewhere, and these are a little thicker than I'd like (like a puffy sticker, about the same thickness of a penny) but you can get many in other places.
by itself i'm not sure nfc task launcher does it for me, but in combination with tasker, it's ridiculous how much can be done....would still love to see what others have come up with.
I love those stickers with the Android! Thanks for the links. I will need to read up on it more. I am definitely interested. This is a lot more exciting stuff then what Google showed off at the I/O last year!
Thats a good idea. Being in IT, we have dead Hard Drives laying around that have awesome magnets in them. They're real slim. I bet I could superglue one to my nexus's battery cover for under the TPU case that would hold. They're thin so it might not screw with the case (but it might).

Yeah, it looks like it's $8 for 2. I just picked up 5 over at tagstand.com for the same price and found 10 for $13 over at http://buynfcstickers.com.
Hopefully you guys are all having good experience with the guy at tag stand. His customer service was great for me and I'll definatley be going back there in the future.
Oh and by the way, I got my new tetrax magnet set in today and not having any issues with the magnet at allowing necessary nor with the metal part sticking to the stock battery door. Only real issue so far is you have to slide it off just right or the battery door just pops off the nexus lol. Highly recommend though!

Keyboard that lets you charge...

Looking for a good keyboard/cover for my Note 10.1 that lets me use the docking connector (charge/OTG while typing) but so far nearly everyone one I've seen has the note rest flush against the bottom of the case so I cant access the port. Is there one on the market that keeps the note raised up enough to use the connector without turning the note upside-down (which makes the wake/volume buttons and the headphone jack inaccessible)

That's what I do, too. Also, I have the Samsung Book Cover and the Note fits in the dock with it on.
I only wished I'd've bought more than one of these when I had the chance: Motorola Wireless Keyboard and Trackpad. It's perfect for traveling (I keep one in a keepcase that I carry the note around in). It's thin, has a cover that doubles as a stand, integrated trackpoint mouse and charges via MicroUSB. Picked up one on sale for $40 and haven't seen it that cheap since.
I had a galaxy tab 8.9 and still have the original Samsung keyboard dock. If you take out the black plastic insert (it pops out along the top edge), the Note10.1 fits in relatively well with the bookcase cover still on. The extra thickness of the cover actually works pretty well to support the tab given that the custom insert isn't in there.
Not perfect, but you can still pick up keyboard docks for the 8.9 or 7 relatively cheaply on Amazon. ($30 less than perfect vs. a $100 import from Asia)

If that had an actual trackpad on it, I might bite, but I absolutely *hate* the "dots" (one of my laptops actually had it's dot missing the cover so it was unuseable - I never noticed I jsut used the trackpad)

Quick question - Does the blue light on the keyboard stay on when your Note is docked and charging? I thought mine did initially but now it doesn't consistently stay on. It also seems to charge slower (but that could just be my imagination).

I'm not sure - I never charge while it's in the dock. The blue light seems to come on intermittently for me - not sure why. At first I thought it was strictly for caps lock, but it is not consistent.

Car holder whilst using a case

I'm after a car holder for my HTC One whereby I don't have to take the phone out of the case as it's annoying and I'd like something quick and easy to use.
I've bought a few from Amazon for my HTC One X but they were rubbish, flimsy or just didn't stick to the windscreen.
So I'm after some personal experiences too, has anyone bought a car holder for their One that you don't have to take it out of the case to use and does it work well?
Somewhere I can buy it from in the UK
Something like this I bought for my HOX but it just didn't work very well. Might give it a go since it's only £2.
My friends in the UK use this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mountek-nGr...e=UTF8&qid=1372679295&sr=8-1&keywords=Mountek
I just ordered one this morning and am expecting to receive it in a week to ten days since I am in Egypt. My friends have had it for a long time now and they tell me that it's amazing and the quality is extremely durable to this day.
Some of them also use a combination of two items: this and this. The first one has a sticky pad which is very, very strong and just doesn't fade, they tell me it's as strong as the day they bought it and they use the second item sometimes, basically they attach it to the sticky pad and use it as an actual car mount.
The second suggestion isn't the most practical but it works well and is fairly cheap, however the Mountek one is just perfect; not only did I read good reviews about it and was it recommended by friends, but I also watched videos and I find it great.

I can highly recommend this one…
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/supergrip-universal-case-compatible-car-mount-p30552.htm
It will hold just about any phone in either portrait or landscape. Its suction pad even sticks to mottled, textured dashboard surfaces. Naturally it holds to glass like a limpet. Beware of the cheaper Amazon look-a-likes that have an inferior sucker.
It is very quick to attach and remove your phone, and doesn’t smother the phone’s back so the phone still gets air cooling (mine gets very hot charging and using sat nav). I think it looks ok too.
Thanks both, much appreciated. I'll check both of these out.
@wnp_79 - What's the pressure like on your car holder, in respect to it looks like it's spring loaded so I'm worried that it might put too much pressure on the sides of the phone, if that makes sense?

It is spring loaded, but does not hold the phone with any more pressure than you would use holding it yourself. The only issue I've had is with certain cases (like the Otterbox Commuter) which have protruding volume buttons. The grip is enough to accidentally activate these if you are not careful where you place the phone. With flush buttons or ensuring the grip misses them there's no issues.

Yes this one works wonderfully. I thought it a little to simple at first... But simple wins here. It'll even work with future phones. You can install and remove phone one handed and of course cases work. Only bad thing is no dedicated charging... But i got over that quick.

Interesting keyboard case on eBay

So I was browsing for keyboard cases for my Note 10.1 the other day and found this case:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slim-Blueto...vers_Keyboard_Folios&var=&hash=item3a844f9c90
Seems interesting because the keyboard is detachable from the case via a magnet on the back of case.
My only concern is that the magnet on the case might mess up the S-Pen. I've had a case with magnets and it indeed interfered with the Note's S-Pen.
Anyway, has anyone heard of this keyboard case?
I'm almost read to order one but the viewing angle looks a little steep?
I did not see any mention of magnets in the description, it's an aluminum case.

Hi kkretch,
The case does seem to have a large magnet on the back where the keyboard part is attached to. Which, by the way, is one of the nicest features of this case. You can either choose to use the tablet with the back cover, or attach it to the keyboard (see picture attached).
Now, I'm not sure how it will interfere with the S-Pen. But magnets and the S-Pen don't go well together.
Here's another seller selling the same item with more detailed pictures:

And as far as I can tell, the viewing angle is adjustable.
The case seems to be very well built and slim. I might take the risk and order one.
Let me know what you think.
If it is indeed a magnet holding it on I'm going to pass, but if you do get it please tell us how it is.
Did you notice the links have different prices.
Just so you guys know, the s-pen works by radio waves, so magnets should not affect it at all. Until some proof is provided, im going to assume that everyone who says they experienced it is just convincing themselves that they did.

This is not true at all. Wacom digitizers do use magnets, that's why you don't need a stylus with battery in it.
Just grab a magnet and put it near the S-Pen while writing down something and you'll see.

I have a case with some magnets attached to it hold the stand and it definitely messes up the s pen in the region of the magnets. If the case is removed, the s pen works fine. There's a lengthy thread on that in of the fora here, you should check that out if you don't believe me.
the wacom digitizer emits an electrical field which allows the spen to function without battery, it does not use RF
I experimented a little
it seems low power magnets had no effect (magnets you would find in most cases)
rare earth magnets however were able to disrupt the spen, and were able to penetrate though the back of the device and cause the spen not to work good aswell
the magnet has to be right on the device or right behind it to have any effect, as soon as it moves an inch-half an inch away it works normally again
I ordered one of those knock off samsung book cover cases which also has magnets in it, so i will see if while opened it has any effect on it

I see.. Well ive had two cases with magnets in it for several months and no problems so ill back up your claim about only rare metal magnets being strong enough.

My sister had a case with a magnet on her Note 2 and it messed up the S-Pen. Although the S-Pen did return to its original state but it took weeks before it came completely demagnetized.
that's awesome. thanks!
I just bought a note and it came with a no name case. Has magnets that keeps the lid closed. Just two small ones at each upper corner of the case. Havent noticed any interference with it.
I really like that keyboard one, especially since its detachable. Is it possibly to get one with a trackpad? ...like the transformer? Or is that custom Asus firmware allowing it to use the pad?

Own this case
I bought the case the OP was asking about. I have to say that it is a great fit for me. The magnet on the back that holds the keyboard to the case has caused no issues with my SPen. The case and keyboard are very slim and add very little bulk to the overall feel. The keyboard is aluminum which makes it feel very durable. The only con I can find about this case is that the key strokes are a little misleading. Don't get me wrong, the keyboard works perfectly and hasn't missed a keystroke yet, but since I am used to traditional keyboards, the feel of the keys as I type is throwing me off a little. Nothing that time and use won't solve. I also like that the keyboard is removable and I still have a protective case on the back of the tablet.
Overall, this is the best keyboard/case I have found for the Note 10.1 (2012) for my needs.

I will try to take some pics when I get back home. Travelling for work at the moment and do not have that case and keyboard on my Note at the moment. I switch it up with the Samsung case and cover as I don't need the keyboard as often the more I use the tablet. Try to get some pics up on Friday though when I get home.
You are correct though, when the keyboard is off, the screen is exposed. I use Invisible Shield to solve that problem.

Thank you Sir

Which stands/cases allow the device to charge while in use?

Hello, I noticed that the charging cable is connected to the bottom of the device (below the home button). If I want to charge the device while watching video with the device standing, what can I do? Obviously the official samsung bookcase cannot do this.

Something like this would work.
This is what I use.... I love it. Used it for years with my XOOM, and now the Samsung. I like that I can use it with a case on it. http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-A...&qid=1399018140&sr=1-38&keywords=tablet+stand

Official book cover works perfectly
When using the official book cover in standing position your galaxy note is actually upside down, so the micro usb is on top. Just tested it

Really? 'Cause I've been looking at reviews of it on YouTube and that's not the case (no pun intended).
I have two of these and you can actually charge while sitting on the stand. You have to configure it to lean the Note back some but it works.

Apparently this one works w/ the Note 10.1 2014 Edition, according to 1 review on Amazon - EE-D100TNWEGUJ.

While it was probably not designed for it, and it is not quite as stable as the standard upright position, you can configure the cover for the inclined typing position and stand the tablet on its head. I was using this position before I figured out the correct position. I still use it for charging.
Personally, I can't justify buying a stand--I have too much crap already! So are there any decent case/stand hybrids that do the trick? The whole layout of the Note seems pretty... haphazard. I've got the cheap Poetic case, but to charge it up while using the folding-stand it has to be positioned at the very edge of the table/desk/surface... which makes the flimsy stand even flimsier. (I seriously want to punch whoever it was that decided thin folding stands were okay to use with 10" tablets).
Just got the one I mentioned, today. Confirmed it charges while the Note 10.1 2014 is docked.
I purchased the Samsung EE-D100TNWEGUJ and it charges the Note and has a audio jack on the back too. Works great.

As far as cases go - this one you can charge when using. Love the case - Poetic Slimline Case - bought it on amazon for $13 several months ago and now it is $20.
If you're willing to shell out the money, the Thought Out Stabile stand is amazing. I have the Stabile Pro and it's the best stand I've ever used/seen
