Installing AOKP on S3 with JB 4.1.1 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys, I just picked up a new Galaxy S3 this morning and I'm not sure how to install a custom AOKP rom.
I've already rooted the phone, but because the firmware is 4.1.1 I'm unsure how to proceed.
Should I just install the latest AOKP rom version, or do I need to upgrade to a newer firmware while still using stock and go from there?

Should be in the q&a threads...
You'll need to install a custom recovery (twrp or cwm)
Than you can flash any ROM you want. If you want Tasks aokp just download the newest version and most recent gapps and flash as instructed in the thread.

I believe the rom I used to root my phone also installed CWM, so I should be good to go as soon as I finish downloading AOKP and gapps.
Thanks for the reply, bud.

Make sure you have the latest version of cwm. They're at 6.0.2.3 if your recovery isn't at that than the flash won't work properly.

Check out the link in my signature for backup and rom flashing procedures.
Cwm 6.0.3.1 is the most recent, not 6.0.2.3. You can find it in post #2, at the bottom. It's a zip you can flash in cwm

Do you know if there's any way to remove the image that is displayed before the boot animation? It has a picture of some briefs and says "Task650 Kernel."

It's not really an issue, I just tend to be somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to boot logos and animations.
Either way, I don't know much about compiling kernels. And the consensus seems to be that your kernel is pretty good, so I'm gonna stick with it.
Thanks for the reply, and I appreciate your work on the rom. Cheers!

Wish I could help you with that. But I can help you with this sound piece of advice, if you manage to get that .zip, DO NOT FLASH IT UNTIL you flash the flash counter removal .zip, so they can't tell you ever rooted/flashed on your phone. After flashing that, than proceed to flash that stock .zip...all the best and good luck to you!

Yeah there were like 3 zips... Rom kernel and recovery. You turn just remove the super user after that. If anything you should be fine flashing stock ROM and kernel. No need to go to stock recovery

I can try to make a CWM/TWRP not De-odexed or rooted out of the stock T989 UVLH1 tar file and make a flashable stock recovery, once I get off work.
Edit 1:Uploading Flash-able SGH-T989 UVLH1 stock rom to Dev-host(20 minutes to finish upload) wait for confirmation i need to test it on my device 1st once is done uploading in the mean time i will make flash-able stock recovery and test it also.
Edit 2:Uploading done both rom and recovery, going to download now both and test it.

Ok testing completed, everything works as it should. The ROM zip will update your kernel to stock.
Might need to flash the UVLH1 radio 1st before flashing the stock recovery.
This is how I did it(tested it):
1. install/flash stock ROM 1st.
2. Once installation completed Reboot to custom recovery.
3. install/flash stock recovery.zip.
4. Power off to verified stock recovery.

Question about d2att to d2bell/d2can

I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S III I747M through Bell, but am a bit lost with ROM flashing. I flashed to new ROM's quite frequently on my old Motorola Milestone, but I am a bit confused with the ROM's for the S III since there are so many variants.
My main question is, as a Bell user am I limited to only d2bell roms or can I change information in the build props or elsewhere to flash d2att roms? I am currently running rooted CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4 and my have been unsuccessful so far in flashing ROMs.

I had the same problem but prefer twrp over cwm so all I did was change my build.prop in rom toolbox, then downloaded goo.im from the playstore. You can flash twrp in app and because I changed the build.prop to say dtatt instead of d2can,it installed the at&t recovery, now I have no problem flashing anything. Hope that helps.

Does changing from a d2can to d1att version of twrp work the same way? I can just flash on top of the existing wihtout any uninstalls and im assuming the d2att can still load d2can backups?
I know twrp are backward compatible, but are they cross version compatible?

Please help!!!

Hi
I'm new to android and is kind of confusing to me on how everything works. Right now I have a at&t Galaxy s3 running android version 4.0.4. I've been wanting to upgrade to the latest jelly bean version. I did try upgrading from the software from Samsung Kies but it does not want to work, it does not recognize the phone completely. I am rooted (Kernel version - 3.0.8) and also I have a rom installed (Triune II) that I basically do not remember how I did it. All I want is to find a way to install the latest jelly bean software on my phone. I did search the forums here at XDA developers website but cannot find a way to do it since there is so many roms and software's to choose from and I'm worried about breaking my phone since I do not know exactly which one to download. I don't know how everything with android really works with all the Kernels and all these things. I would appreciate if anyone could help me with this issue. Please!!!
Thanks
Nelson
You didn't search but its OK
You can't upgrade rooted devices via Kies.
If you were able to flash one custom rom you should be able to do it again by simply following directions on a ROMs thread.
Look for your desired ROM (the name and android version is the name of the thread)
And just follow instructions and you should be set

Yes after you're rooted you can go from 4.0 to 4.2
Make sure your recovery is up to date.
If its not you can find the latest in the ATT Android Development thread
When flashing AOSP based ROMs like Liquid Smooth make sure to follow the instructions and download both ROM and Gapps files and flash them both ( 1st ROM than Gapps) and you should be set.

Like I said don't give it false information.
Just because you failed at using a simple recovery doesn't mean others as well. You're the only person I seen complaining about this. So its clearly you.
TWRP works great and I haven't updated mine in over 7months and I've never had an error flashing.
@Nelson please don't listen to this guy.

Click menu than your option should be there.
I recommend trying them all out!
No ROM will be better than another.
It all comes down to you and the features you want. Read the ROMs description and see what they're packed with.
Watch a YouTube video or read up on how to wipe your cache & delvik, factory reset and all that before flashing so you boot up with out errors.
Its quite easy and fun.
Do not install anything thru GooManager unless you know absolutely what you are doing. Stick to ATT Android Development and ATT Original Android Development ... Do not and I repeat DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING FROM INTERNATIONAL S3 OR ANY OTHER PHONE. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE

No problem!
Get a feel of what you're doing so you're comfortable flashing other stuff like themes/mods/extra features in the future.

Yea, I will now... after you explain everything now it looks more simpler I did not know for a fact that I could flash a jelly bean rom if I was still on 4.0 now I get the meaning of a rooted device. Also I notice I can download roms thru that app goomanager. After the download is complete for both the rom and gapps I can go ahead and get into recovery and flash them right? Also one last question... nandroid is for me to do a backup? I will find that in recovery mode? How does it really work?

Yes once they're downloaded flash thru recovery but remember to wipe! And make sure what you have downloaded is absolutely for the US veriant of the S3 or has d2att in the name.
Nandroid will be found in TWRP recovery.
Its just kind of like assurance. If you flash something that boot loops you can revert to your backup.

[Q] Having Trouble Flashing CyanogenMod 10

So I successfully rooted my S3 (Bell I747M), installed TWRP recovery, booted into the recovery, created a backup (thank god!), wiped using TWRP (factory reset -> wipe dalvik -> wipe cache -> wipe data) and then went into install, selected the CyanogenMod zip and swiped to flash. Failed. Every time. I tried numerous wipes but flashing CM just kept on failing. So I got fed up and restored to my backup.
But I really want CM! One more maybe-important thing is that when I was installing TWRP, it said my device was d2can, even though my device is actually I747M. But I remember when downloading CM I had to download the d2att version (that was listed as the one compatible with my I747M), but TWRP was saying d2can and not giving me the option to choose anything else so I just went with it.
Please try and help me!
Did you download the d2att version of cm?

Hmm alright, are you able to flash any other roms?
I had a similar issue and im trying to recall what I did to overcome this..
EDIT: I think I remember. I flashed a different CWM version and for some reason it prevented me from flashing CM10.1.. Do a google search for "CanadaGS3CWM6.0.1.2.tar" and let me know if it works. If you cant find it shoot me a PM and ill look for it.
Thanks for the reply.
I haven't tried flashing any other room but I have successfully flashed a debloating software made by mrRobinson.
Also‚ I'm not using CWM‚ I'm using TWRP. I installed it through the GooManager app found in the Play store.
If I have already installed TWRP then will I still be able to install that CWM file you are suggesting I install?
It is late now and I am going to bed but I'll be back on tomorrow evening to try again so I'll try what you said then.

I think the issue is that I'm trying to flash a d2att ROM on a TWRM that thinks I'm on a d2can device when in reality I'm on an I747M. The d2att is said to work on the I747M on CyanogenMod's website though so I think the issue is flashing the d2att when TWRP thinks I'm on a d2can.
Anyone have a clue as to what to do about that?

You'll need a d2att version of twrp. You can get the odin flammable file off their website.
You'll also need to verify your boot loader is up to date. Many people having the same problem.
Simple search will get you both things.

So I just download the .tar and flash it just like I flashed the root through Odin?
Edit: Also should I get CM10.1 or stick with 10 until a stable release of 10.1?

Yup just in odin like a root file. It goes in the pda section. Uncheck reboot,. When it finishes unhook the cable pull the battery and than reboot into recovery after. Sometimes the flash doesn't stick after a reboot.
Cm10.1 has a release candidate out right now rc4 it's pretty stable.
You'll need to make sure your bootlader is up to date before you flash it though.

How would I check if my bootloader is up to date?
Also when flashing TWRM do I flash the zip file or extract the recovery.img and flash that?

Read through this. If it's up to date just flash the newest cm 10 once recovery is changed.

If it is out of date than go here and follow these steps.

That tells me how to check my bootloader but how do I know if it's the latest one?
Also, when flashing TWRP, do I extract the zip and flash the recovery.img or flash the whole zip?
By the way, thanks a ton for all the help you're giving me!

The second link has the latest boot loaders sorry I should have mentioned that. It has to match the one listed.
I don't know what you downloaded but the twrp recovery off their site should be the .tar to load in odin. The .img file you'd have to load using adb. Easier to use the odin file. No unzipping just flash with odin.

Btw, CM10.1 RC5 is pretty stable with good battery life.
Could you please tell me what method was used? I have a Bell GS3 as well. I followed this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 to get root and recovery today. I have now tried flashing CM10.1 using the latest CWM and TWRP d2att recoveries and neither work. I'm giving up for today but will try again after work tomorrow. I've read stuff about changing the build.prop files to trick the phone but I don't know where to start.
Thanks,
Spike
