Boot Loop :( - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I was an idiot and changed my dpi to 240
Despite pulling my build.prop and changing the density back to 320 then pushing back to /system/build.prop, I'm still stuck in a loop
What do i do?
Thanks everyone
Running 4.1.2 stock btw

If you have a nandroid backup might be best to do a full wipe via recovery and restore your nandroid backup.
there are a couple of roms here to try which have 240dpi capability for example Hashcheck Hybrid and Paranoid android if you want to use 4.2.2 and lose the s pen functionality.
-Dan
hope this helps.

Thanks, I've been putting off flashing anything to my phone, feels too scary for such an expensive phone, but screw it, better than having a boot loop I can't get out of!
Another quick question, flashing a custom rom on this phone doesn't affect the modem? Running UK EE, don't wanna dig myself a deeper hole

Mostly the ROMs do not touch your modem, unless specifically stated in that ROM thread. But generally no, and your modem stays. If you need to, u can change back from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35069132.

Hi. Im on ee too. You can always get the modem and csc here to flsh via cm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031575
Im on #rom and confirm 240dpi works. Its a great rom. An update is due soon. I flashed and initially chose an australian csc via aroma, keeping same modem then flashed ee modem after going through the set up wizard, from the link above. Its sweet.

Awesome
This is my first samsung phone, and coming from HTC it was a bit daunting looking at modems and stuff.
Anyone recommend any good s-pen substitutes?

I'm using cm10.1 and changing the dpi on it works too. Using dpi 220 now.

Did you just mess with the build.prop?
Do you have USB debugging enabled?
If so, you could just push a clean one via adb.
Edit: urgh. What I mean is; this is in the wrong section. Sorry for bump.

CRT Animation for Sprint Galaxy S3?

I have been through every Rom looking for this feature, CRT Animation. The ACS Syndicate Rom is the only Rom available with it. Although that Rom over-heats, and drains the battery. I have done everything I can think of or find to get this modification, with no luck!
Currently on Blazer Rom 1.7 LG8
I have tried the CWM Zip files for the international models... although it says installed correctly, does not work.
I have tried the CWM Zip files for the Galaxy S2... once again it says it installs correctly, but does not work.
I have tried the manual code change for the international models... pushed services.jar onto phone and it worked for a minute with a terrible stutter and lag on screen on, after a few minutes it stopped working altogether and left me with this ugly lag on screen on.
I tried then the manual code for the sprint based LG2 models... pushed services.jar onto phone and it did not work at all, and still left me with a ugly lag on screen on.
I have re-flashed Blazer Rom and am once again twiddling my thumbs... PLEASE HELP!

*UPDATE
I have just tried to replace the services.jar in the /system/framework folder, rezipped, resigned, and re-flashed the ROM. Again, it is not working. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, thank you wildgamer100.
Guys, it is IMPOSSIBLE if you are running LG8. You could hack it in the whole framework but that would be way too much work. Samsung messed with the SurfaceFlinger and it broke the CRT animation. Sorry.

Thank you for clearing that up Clark44, If I can bother with a few other questions?
Is it possible after updating to LG8, to flash the modem back to LG2 and then make the modification?
Or, do you know where I can find an outdated version of a ROM, aside from ACS Syndicate ROM, that is still in LG2?
Thanks again!

Hey Zeke, i was also wondering of getting CRT animation off to work but on Telus i747M (its like ATT) and my firmware is original stock LE8! But I dont know if its safe to replace system files (services.odex) from international SGS3 http://www16.zippyshare.com/v/31271240/file.html . So how did it work on ur sprint? Wouldnt it brick your phone being different hardware and all that??

No I was desperate enough for CRT to try it. What happened for me was...
Downloaded file, placed on ext sd on phone storage.
Installed from sd card via CWM
CWM reported that installation was a success
Although when I rebooted, nothing...
So good luck bro, I didn't have any bricking issues, and let me know what happens!

It seems that upon boot the services files revert back to original ones since they are controlled by the framework itself, therefore do nothing on LE8 either since the whole rom needs to be remodified to include CRT animation fyi on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1715238 there is crt mod for every firmware version. I have absolutely no idea thou why it would work on tmobile LG2 out of a sudden, so report back when u install that LG2 rom and the CRT files u used (probs we are using different mods).

SGH-T989D Telus/Koodo Official Jelly Bean (4.1.2)

Update out! Check your Kies or flash via Odin.
From the Telus website;
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BENEFITS AND ENHANCEMENTS
-Actionable notifications will show up in the notification pane.
-Jelly Bean makes your Android device even more responsive by boosting your device's CPU instantly when you touch the screen, and turns it down when you don't need it to improve battery life.
-With Android Beam, you can now easily share your photos and videos.
-As you place widgets on the screen, everything else automatically moves to make room. If they're too big, widgets resize on their own. If you choose to resize a widget, apps and widgets will now also move out of the way.
-Google Now automatically delivers relevant real-time information.
NOTE: Google is releasing this update in stages. Your smartphone will receive a notification when this update becomes available to you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Odin Flash files:
Koodo:
Download now HERE
If you are with Telus, you can flash this as well, see HERE
Edit: I attached vlingo.apk from ICS for anyone who misses the Samsung voice commands and driving mode for bluetooth headsets. I figured they would of put that in, as it is law for hands free driving in Canada...but I guess they needed space. Enjoy.
Downloading now! Thanks!
I had a feeling they were going to release it today, just flashed a rom last night.
Good thing im an addict, hehe

It's actually 4.1.2. I'm running it now. Haven't had a whole lot of time to try it out but it seems pretty nice so far. It's a huge change from 4.0.4, will take some getting used to before I'm sure of what I like about it and don't
Did you install with Kies or Odin? Are you on Telus or Koodo?
Based on the file names, it doesn't look like there is much functional difference between the TLS and the KDO (same radio this time around?). I'll be downloading tonight.
I'm on Koodo and I used Odin for the update. I'm guessing the only difference is going to be the boot screens.

im am going to try it now. havent had time because of the kids but now they are asleep, here goes nothing. i will report once im up and running.
Ok so I just got done flashing this projectaosp.
First I made sure I downloaded latest tmobile modem as of june or july I believe, as well as the most recent saber kernal. Flashed modem first, then the rom followed by kernal.
Everything looks and performs freakin awesome however im missing something. As I speculated its not as easy as just retaining just the modem.
My google play store gives up errors when it does the automatic backup. My voicemail is not working. So I can assume anything tmobile is out of the question. Perhaps I need to tweak my apn settings ? Can anyone shine light to what im missing to get this working ?
I know just by flashing this is the rom I want and need. Just need it functional. Im willing to try anything if you give me instuctions. Ive already "bricked " my note 2 and brought it back so im not scared to try anything. However this was very noticeably quick and snappy compared to my daily driver of the jedi 17 rom. I want this rom so badly on my t-889. Its the best of both worlds, touchwiz and aosp. Please help or directions.

How do I go back to stock? Not stock modem.

I apologize. MK5 is a problematic bootloader. Do not try to Odin flash an older firmware over this. Again I apologize. What carrier are you with? If it is a Canadian carrier you can just flash the appropriate firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558311. These have the bootloader removed.

I've only used stock and CM11 so far since 4.3. The I've not tried Liquid Smooth but Grievous ROM is pretty good. It's the ROM currently on my wife's phone. It is white themed Touchwiz which was my biggest selling point.

I don't think that is compatible with the i747m no?
Oh and also, let's say I want to get Liquid Smooth onto my phone but I currently have Quantum. Do I have to flash back to stock with Odin and then install the Liquid Smooth ROM? Or can I just go and wipe the system now in recovery without going to stock and then install Liquid Smooth in recovery?
Grievous is compatible with the 747m. Im on 747m Bell. You just need to flash a modem and kernel to get data and wifi to work. As far as liquid smooth, you do not need to go back to stock. Installing the ROM and then wiping should work. If you do find that you ever flash a ROM and have WiFi issues, kernel is likely culprit. No data is usually due to a modem. These seem to be more often with new ROMs and most development based off AT&T phones.

[Q] Need Help Flashing a ROM

Hi guys, sorry if this is stupid. I've flashed ROMs to 3 or 4 phones before this one and didn't have any issues with them, but this time around it doesn't seem so easy. My phone is a virgin mobile galaxy s2 (d710)
My phone has been rooted for a while and my stock ROM started randomly freezing up on me 4-5 times/day, so I finally decided to flash a ROM. The stickied post says to use odin mobile to flash to GB - EL26 Stock w/ CWM then to flash the ROM I want. Any ROM I tried flashing gave a status 7 error and aborted, EXCEPT for one ROM, and on that one I didn't even have working 3G? I believe this thread implied doing it any other way would be a hard brick.
I finally ended up using samsung's official upgrade tool in download mode to flash back to stock ROM, but it would be nice to get a custom on now that I've put time into it.
Can anyone point me in the direction I need to go?
Thanks
EDIT: I'm currently on the 4.1.2 stock ROM

I'm guessing you're trying to flash a KitKat ROM? Using Mobile Odin and EL26CWM will work when flashing 4.2.2 (and under) ROMs, but not KitKat. You'll need the last Blasphemy 6.6 kernel (just for the updated ClockworkMod), located in Original Development, for that.
In your case, you'll probably want to flash FJ12 or FL26 (if you can find it) modem zips, as you're on Virgin Mobile, and those are ICS Virgin Mobile modems, which you'll need to have working data/internet on Any AOSP ROM (JB modems won't work).
And this guide is assuming you're completely stock JB firmware, not rooted.

It looks like I'm on GB28 stock. I think agats caused a soft brick. I'm reflashing back to stock again now....I don't know what's going on with this phone.
Edit: Retried, got it to work this time. Thanks.
Is there a reason why you have to flash one recovery just to move onto another one? Would any recovery work installing any ROM? I'm a bit confused by all these different recoveries, since my last phone only needed one.

On this device, recovery comes bundled with the kernel. When you flash a ROM or kernel, the recovery that was on gets overwritten by the recovery that comes with the ROM/kernel you're flashing.
The reason everybody started using EL26CWM (gingerbread kernel) was due to a bug in the stock ICS firmware that was causing some people's devices to be permanently bricked when doing a factory reset.
Status 7 error when flashing is usually due to using a recovery that's too old.
So to answer your question... No, there is no "be-all, end-all" recovery for this device. Sorry [emoji20]
Glad you got it working though

Thanks for the help. Now that I'm running CM11, I don't have visual voicemail and it looks like I can't receive MMS.
Serious props to the people that use custom ROMs that aren't driven insane by bugs, I'm irritated by it already.
Know of any fix?
I don't know about visual voicemail... I'm flashed to Cricket and just use the built-in voicemail statusbar notification. Have you tried pushing the apk manually? I'm pretty sure I've seen Virgin Mobile fixes here in the d710 forum.
As far as MMS goes, have you tried messing with the APN's? I don't think MMS will work as-flashed, out-of-the-box for you without modifying them for Virgin.
If you're getting annoyed by bugs, have you given stock, rooted deodexed GB28 a try? When i get the TouchWiz itch, I run deodexed GB28, along with Agat's 1.3 kernel, TD's AIO mod, and Missing Link mod (both found in Themes and Apps of this forum).
I'm currently running Slimbean build 7 (4.2.2) as it's super lightweight, stable, and has good battery-life.

Do you know where I could find the voicemail apk?
Also, where can I mess with the APNs/what would work there?
The only reason I want a custom ROM at all is to be on KitKat. It honestly disgusts me a bit that google hasn't standardized versions....I don't get why every phone needs it's own ROM and never gets updated....
Thanks man.
Edit: I did find a MMS fix and visual voicemail all in one zip, but flashing it screwed the phone and I had to restore in recovery.
As far as editing APN's, I use Nova Prime launcher to create a shortcut on my homescreen to access them. Create shortcut to Activities/Settings/APNs and make your edits there.
Have you tried extracting the contents of the zip and manually applying those changes? Sorry but I wouldn't know anything else about configuring for Virgin. Maybe you could ask in that respective ROM thread, as I'm sure there are Virgin Mobile users there that have everything working.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm a bit slow sometimes when it comes to android/linux. I pulled the apk out of the zip, installed it, that's working fine. I just need to find a fix for my MMS. I can send but not receive.
Edit: I found a way to open the APN settings using voice dialer, but it's blank and choosing to add one, it does not save.

Just for clarification, if I want to flash a new ROM when I'm already on a custom, do I need to use odin mobile to flash back to that GB rom with CWM before I flash the recovery and new ROM? Or can I just wipe and flash new recovery from the one I have now?

If the new recovery you are talking about is safe to flash from...and the one you are currently using is safe to flash from...then you can just reboot recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, then flash new recovery and then reboot recovery. Now you will be on the new, safe, recovery. So do your wipes ( data, cache, dalvik cache and format system ) and flash the rom.
If you want to go the mobile odin way..in case the recovery you currently have cant flash the new recovery you need, in order to flash the rom of choice..which im assuming is kitkat. As it needs the most up to date recovery to flash properly.
Then i have a simple guide you can follow to flash a safe kernel/recovery, in which you can then flash the newer recovery for flashing the rom you have choosen.
Link to guide. Post 5 is what you need to read.
If this sounds complicated or confusing..please post a link to current rom you wish to install and i will read the op and point you down the correct path.
Thanks, I was looking to use either of these. I've had issues with ROMs so far because I'm on Virgin Mobile and lots of stuff is buggy. Not sure which of these will work best:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/epic-4g-touch/orig-development/rom-liquidsmooth-v3-1-t2803683
I'm not normally confused by rooting/flashing, but I don't understand the whole "safe recovery" thing.

I see. Im not too familiar with what works with virgin mobile.
But if you can flash a virgin modem and set your apns after a flash.. That will get your data working. I'm at work.. But let me refewsh my memory later about virgin mobile on this device and I'll hit ya back.
Fyi.. I think jdsingle made a virgin mobile rom a while back.

Thanks, I looked for jdsingle and only found posts for 3D Evo I believe; no activity since 2011?

It was made for JB but it's a start

Yeah, I tried that one, it continually crashed my launcher every 3 seconds, had to reflash the ROM. It did give me the voicemail apk I needed though! Really if I could just get flash instructions for going from one rom to another, I'd be set probably.
Have you tried applying the changes and setting permissions in the zip manually, like with Root Explorer?

No, I'm honestly not sure how to do that. Linux's file structure is confusing to me. Granted I'm also having wifi problems on this rom too, it disconnects all the time.

It honestly isn't too difficult at all. All I see in the zip is a new apns-conf.xml (permissions are rw-r-r), 2 build.prop edits, and the deleting of telephony.db located in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
