Go from 4EXT Recovery to Clockwork Recovery? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
Ive found out that 4EXT sucks (too slow) and I want to go back to Clockwork. Will a simple flash do?
Thanks

Which version of 4EXT are you using? I'm finding it generally a lot better than using the touchpad in CWM recovery. Anyway, even if you still do definitely want to rid yourself of 4EXT, just download ROM manager from the Play store and follow the instructions from there on. I wouldn't recommend downloading the touch version (5.8.x) from the CWM site as I found this so unstable as to be unusable.

Agree with htcdreamon here, 4ext not only has more features but also does backups faster as well as flashes, but what do I know.....
ROM manager should work fine but I prefer fastboot as the least automation possible makes me feel the most comfortable, and its faster

4EXT is very slow and even freezes up some times. Never had this problem with CWR.

For the record I am on 1.0.0.3 RC3

I have 4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC9 and I haven't problems with this recovery

When I used my G2, 4ext worked fine for me.

Only problem I've ever had with 4EXT is when recently I tried MIUI out of interest (never used it before) and when I did a full wipe it got stuck on wiping sd-ext so I had to do a battery pull, but I ended up ballsing my sd-ext partiton up. Had to reformat my SD card.

Also, all my partiions are currently ext4; Clockwork is compatible right?

Anything I should take in account for?

So apparently i can't make Nandroid Backups or Restores

Im rocking Oxygen 1.0.3 and i got S-OFF
-I used psfMod as my main recovery for a long time and have never had an issue.
-When i was on OpenDesire i had no issues with Nandroids
-I recently updated my psfMod to the newest version http://www.klutsh.com/download/
-I recently updated to Oxygen 1.0.2 (it has been since updated to 1.0.4)
I only started noticing the problems once i had those 2 updates. I first noticed the problem when i tried to restore an OLD nandroid backup of OD4.0.36 and it booted into android, everything got a force close and it rebooted. No nandroids were restorable without everything force closing. SO i wiped everything and updated to Oxy 1.0.2 with a fresh install. I made a nandroid and tried to restore it, and that failed too.
I have tried installing the latest Clockwork 2.5.1.8 and that too results in the same problems.
Im at a total loss of what to do It's hard to play around with Android without being able to create Nandroids!
have you tried using Clockwork 2.5.0.7?
this seems to be the most reliable from what i've read.

there you go.
did you erase your recovery via fastboot?
fastboot erase recovery
after that, flash the recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.img/recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-bravo.img
both work, tested them, and 2.5.1.8 DOES NOT lead to an usb brick when restoring backups. i tried it several times this weekend, and worked flawlessly.
using Clockwork 2.5.0.7 currently but cannot wipe battery stated does anyone have a solution ???

why not? it's under advanced, and should work just fine, until stated otherwise in the output of clockwork
Wow, so from now on i guess i should erase the recovery before reflashing it!!!
WOOOOOO Thanks alot man!!!

Recovery for slcd HTC desire

I looked for everywhere bit couldn't find any link to clockwork recovery 3.0(ext4 partitions) or ny other that I can use with unrevocked..to make or erase ext4 partitions

Using a recovery to partition ext will only partition ext2/3 at best. To get 4 you can run some scripts or something that will upgrade the ext partition, or you can format it using something like Gparted or Easus.
I definitely recommend doing any partitioning with Gparted, cos I'm running Clockworkmod 3.0 on an SLCD desire (installed during rooting with Unrevoked) and the partitioning option never works. Neither does ROM Manager, whereas Gparted has never failed me once.
Keep ROM manager on your phone though, cos sometimes, 3.0 cant flash a zip cos of some edify script issue, so if this ever happens, go into ROM manager and tell it to flash clockworkmod, then ask it to boot into recovery. It will boot you into clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 as a one off, and flashing these zips in 2.5.0.7 always works.
After you flash the zip and reboot back to android, next time you try to use clockworkmod you'll be back to 3.0.
Here's the thread where you can get Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5:

You should avoid using Rom Manager. It doesn't work properly and causes more problems than what it solves.
In my opinion, use CWM 2.5.0.7 because it works and all scripts work with it. Until there is an official release for 3.0, it won't work properly.

This would be the ideal option, but I found that when using 2.5.0.7 creating backups failed, which is a pretty important feature!!
That's the only reason why I changed to 3.0.0.5.
Have you tried rebooting?

You don't NEED the cm7r2 hboot. The ROM will flash fine on stock hboot. cm7r2 will give you more space for apps though.
There are many variations on rooting/S-OFF/recovery installing/ flashing these days. For every person who chooses to reply here, you will probably get a different set of recommendations. The following is my personal recommendation:
1) Download the ROM.
2) Save to SD card.
S-OFF:
3) S-OFF your phone using alpharev
4) Flash cm7r2 hboot via fastboot if required
Install a New Recovery:
5) Download 4ext Recovery Updater from the market (free)
6) Run the app
7) From the app, install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3
Backup:
8) Boot into recovery and nandroid backup your current ROM
9) Boot into android on current ROM
9a) Backup all apps with MyBackup Root if required
10) Copy your entire SD card contents to pc in case of screw-ups later (or new partitions)
Partition:
Do you have an ext3 or ext 4 partition on your SD card (between 500MB &1GB)?
If yes, go to (13), otherwise:
11) Format SD card (from recovery) with 500-1000 MB ext 4 partition, the remainder FAT 32
12) Copy SD card contents back to card from PC (with card reader)
Wipe & Flash:
13) Boot back into recovery (Power up while Volume-down button held in, then select Recovery with volume-down followed by power button)
14) Full wipe of phone (Format all partitions except SD card)
15) Flash ROM
16) Boot into Android
17) Restore apps if required
Radio:
18) Flash of newer radio recommended. The one in my sig is popular (not the very latest, but reportedly better battery life than the newer .23 version). You can't flash the zip if you have cm7r2 as the /cache/ partition is to small - you will need to flash the .img via fastboot. Alternatively you could flash the radio.zip after stage (5) and before stage (9).
EDIT (17 Feb): S-OFF is required before using 4ext recovery. Above sequence of events edited to reflect this.
excellent guide thank you very much for taking the time to write that.
I have an issue though, when trying to install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3 everything seems to install fine but when i reboot to recovery its still my old recovery by koush that i used for jailbreaking my ps3.
am i doing something wrong?

I see in the OP that you are S-ON if you want to flash a different recovery you have to be S-OFF.....

Hi,
Sorry, been away on holiday for the last week so only just catching up with the thread.
My mistake in post 2. As several others have pointed out, S-OFF is required before using 4ext. I will edit post 2 to show the correct sequence of events.

[Q] Stuck in Clockwork Mod Bootloop

Installed Andromadus 4.0 beta on my wife's G2. When I got home from work my wife said that the phone had restarted and would now only boot into clockworkmod recovery v5.8.1.0. Tried factory reset and wiping the caches and reflashing. Also tried flashing CM9 unofficial but the phone just shuts off in the middle of the flash and reboots back into clockwork. Tried to flash stockmod but I get a "can't open error". Currently the phone boots into Clockwork mod, stays on for 60 secs, then reboots itself back into clockwork mod. Help please!
maybe try to reflash your recovery, boot into fastboot and try...
When you say 'tried to flash stockmod' do you mean a PC10IMG?
Cause those are made to be flashed in hboot mode, not recovery.

Well that must be why that option didn't work. I'm pretty new to all this. Have a MyTouch I rooted a couple weeks ago that works great. But I am having fits with this one, and worse, it's my wifes phone Any other suggestions?
wipe everything in recovery, then flash a superwipe.zip (also fastboot -w is good but if your new dont worry) no flash a stable rom in recovery. i suggest elite mod, its a cm7 based rom that i personally like. all files will be found in the development threads along with any instructions needed. if you have troubles ask here again but make sure you
1 wipe all
2 superwipe.zip
3 flash rom (elitemod or whatever)

It worked! Thank you so much!
great to hear! if you used and like the rom i suggested make sure to thank the developer, it doesnt seem that too many use this rom any more but it is still one of my favorites for the g2 and the dev deserves great credit
Not really working!

I tried installing superwipe, and all sorts of different android operating systems but I cant seem to get my phone to get out of clockworkmod v5.8.1.0 and I can get to fastboot or hboot but it wont go passed the HTC screen. Every time I try installing an updated OS or a different OS or even doing the superwipe.zip it just says installation aborted and i can't get it to work! Any tips?
For future reference, don't go blindly flashing "Stock" images and such via the bootloader you tend to get yourself into more trouble that way (bricking, or making it difficult to get back to rooting).
Also if you're frequently using ICS roms I recommend using 4EXT Touch Recovery instead of ClockworkMod. A lot more useful tools in the recovery itself especially for wiping or formatting specific partitions.
When you get a chance check out which eMMC is used on that phone (click the eMMC name in my signature to see the poll thread which tells you how to check). Good for future reference if something acts up again.

CWM & 4EXT questions...

Ok, I had a HTC Sensation and used 4EXT Recovery because it was the easiest for me to save the current rom, slap on another rom and then just go back into 4EXT and restore the data/settings from the last rom so I wouldn't lose out on my settings and apps whenever I changed roms. It literally just took minutes to do (the restoring that is) and probably the easiest I've seen.
I now have the SG3 but found that there isn't any 4EXT yet for us and thus cannot do this "easy" method. I currently have CWM but have had limited experience with it. I've only used clear cache, dalvik, install from zip, connect external sd card/usb and that's about it. I don't like to fool around with things I don't know.
So, my question is...does CWM have a similar function/method to do as I did in 4EXT OR is there another recovery/app that I can use that will do the same as 4EXT?
Anything guys?

Don't worry! its basically the same thing as 4EXT. CWM is just more simple and not so pretty. If you want to check out the CWM touch which is similiar to 4EXT just download rom manager and donate to download and install touch cwm. OR... take a look at the development forums and you can find the instructions to flash touch cwm through terminal on your phone.
