My bad,
Could the phone had been dropped?
A neighbour of mine had an epic that he dropped on an occasion, and had the same issue, his phone had a larg scuff on the back cover, led light would flash, when called phone would ring but you couldn't answer.
After some dismantling and removing screen, and not seeing any physical damage it was reassembled upon start up screen came back to life, phone worked fine until it got upgraded to an S3.

I think its obvious there's a little cover that popped off over the speaker and it doesn't exactly go back on properly. Wouldn't insurance cover it though. I do have tep but I think they make you take it in to se if it can be fixed.

i had 3 s3s that got hot 1 note with the black crush screen issue now they sent out another s3 you have 14 to 20 days to return each phone no matter what(no physical damage). tmobile calls it buyers remorse if you bring to a tmobile store and confirm the issue with them it will be on the computer for cust service to see so they dont have you go through the hard reset ect... if your past your 20 days they will send a refurbished phone if you have php.php is awsome, say next year your battery loses capacity or your phone starts acting up call they will send a replacement.

Try factory reset first
I ahve had this problem also, but it has only happend while charging. It acts like the back button is pushed continously. I only noticed this once I switched to a six foot USB cable.

I'm getting phantom keys that freeze my phones menu, home, ect. when my phone switches from 4G to 3G because of 4G signal loss. My battery isn't bloated. And I've tried going back to regular stock even but they don't go away. What could be the cause? Could it still be the battery? or is something wrong with my phone? Any help would be appreciated

The phantom menu key press is a known issue that will allow you to get your device exchanged or repaired regardless of having TEP or being in warranty or not. Bring it into a Sprint repair location and they will either replace the LCD/TSP assembly (if they have the part) or arrange for a replacement device.

Sorry, but I work at a Sprint ASC repair center. They created an issue ID that allows for free repair or replacement of the device. Unless you are a Sprint ASC tech and use eTicket, then you obviously aren't aware of the recent addition of this policy repair/exchange.
Well, like you said, it is a recent change.

hulk smash phone!
Too much Spinach
You were just holding it?
Did it have an un-noticed hairline crack prior maybe?
How were you holding the phone? Screen face up, down, on a call, etc., etc.
I'm trying to understand the mechanics of how this happened.
