I talked to a guy at Sprint today and he said that 3G will still have the 5GB cap but 4G will truly be unlimited.
Can someone confirm?
yup thats how it is

Not true.
With the $10 mandatory add-on, even 3G becomes unlimited. I have confirmed this from training materials that I've seen. I have also been told this by numerous PR friends.
And in all honesty, who has ever been told be Sprint that they need to stop going over their 5GB limit without going WAY over month street month? I think its only purpose is to serve as a legal loophole to limit people going crazy with their data. That's why no one pays overages.

I would not give it any thought I use over 12 gigs of data a month and they have never said anything
There has never been a 5GB cap for data on phones. It's only on aircards/usb modems.
For any of the Sprint Everthing plans that include 'Unlimited Data' it has a technical cap at 5GB. However, this is as said above a legal loop hole so Sprint can stop you if you are using way too much. The chances of you getting in trouble by using 6GB is almost 0. I haven't found anyone yet who have been charged over for it.
As for the training material, it probably did say 'Unlimited' however Sprint calls the plan 'Everything Plan with Unlimited Data'. But look into the fine print and you will see the 5GB cap. I have to pay a mandatory $10 for Data with my Pre and I still technically have a cap.
So the Evo will have no technical loop hole for 4G, no cap at all. However, 3G will have a cap of 5GB that any one can go over and not get in trouble.
What does?

I think I read on engadget not too long ago that the 3g and 4g were unlimited on the evo.
I've been under the impression that there is only a 5gb cap for wifi hotspot on 3G...
So It's been established that there is NO cap on GB transfered on evo, thethering 3G and 4G means truly unlimited correct guys ?
correct, on phone usage there is no cap, with a data device (non phone) there is a cap

Yup.. confirmed over and over... with regards to the EVO there are NO caps.
Only air cards have a 5gb limit

If you are on AT&T's new mobile data share plans (or if you switch to it) then yes, you can tether for free and it will count against whatever data plan you chose (or choose) with mobile share. I switched my phones over on Thursday. I have a S3, and an iPhone 4s. We went with the 6 gig plan. All plans come with unlimited talk and text to any number, as well as wireless hotspot and tethering (wifi and USB), with no additional setup fees.
Both my phones share the 6 gigs and those gigs can be used however I choose.

I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan so I'm not ready to switch to a shared plan and risk losing unlimited. Thanks for the replies everyone
Foxfi does work on ATT - go here: Foxfi.com/bin download the app and run it. I needed a reboot to get it to work but after that - flawless. Thanks everyone

... you DO know that tethering on an unlimited plan also runs the risk of being FORCED onto a different plan, correct?
AT&T seems to be REALLY good at knowing when your tethering. I never had the "unlimited" plan on AT&T to begin with (but realistically, it really isnt unlimited anymore anyways), so I was very happy to see the new mobile share plans that allow me to use my tethering as part of the data I'm already paying them for every month.

I used to tether on my old phone (iPhone) with ATT and one day I got a text saying basically to stop tethering or they would put me into a capped data plan. I continued tethering until I got another text saying they were moving me into a data plan. I called ATT and was polite and played dumb, the girl said she would remove that "flag" from my account since I called. I stopped tethering at that point. Now I just want to see if it can be done on my S3, I will prolly just go with a data plan at some point and tether properly with ATT
How do they monitor that?

Easy. Tethering forces additional hop. Also data usage when on another tethered device has different characteristics vs. data usage on the device.

Hey guys I have T-Mobile and I'm on a prepaid plan. What is the difference between classic plans and value plans? Also, can you do "truly unlimited" on prepaid or is that only for customers with a contract. Thanks guys!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
"Truly Unlimited" is currently contract only. "Technically Unlimited" is what you get on prepaid (throttled after you reach your cap).
Every carrier offering unlimited data except for tmo's new plan has a loophole to get out of providing you with unlimited data. Tmo cap's your speed after a certain point, but still gives you data. Simple mobile never limits your data, but will cap your speed if you put too much strain on their network (aka constant streaming, lots of bandwidth usage).

That's what jordanisher said. Truly unlimited is currently contract only. Unlimited but throttled for prepaid and contracts that don't want to switch to the new plan. Although there are rumors of truly unlimited going to prepaid.
The difference between classic and value is that classic gives you a free/low priced phone but higher monthly charges. Value has no free phone but lower monthly charges. With value, you can opt to get a phone at full price and pay via monthly installment that would reflect on you monthly bill.

Value Plans don't offer a device subsidy. Classic Plans do. They're both 2-year contracts.
Truly Unlimited Data isn't available on prepaid. 5GB throttle point is the best you can get.
Thanks guys appreciate it!

And since there are folks responding who know T-Mobile's plans better than me, I'm currently prepaid with a 5 GB cap. I now use my Nexus 7 all the time, and everyone I've asked so far suggests that tethering my Nexus 7 to my Galaxy Nexus wouldn't be allowed if I switched to a value plan and got the unlimited data.
I've been hesitant to make any switch since I currently tether my Nexus 7 on my current plan and that seems to be allowed, but I'm concerned that if I switch, and I'm somehow detected tethering, that I'll be in a worse position than I am now.
Is tethering a restriction on everything, or in the case of a tablet like the Nexus 7 is there some allowance? Secondly, how is this being detected and/or enforced? Finally, if I were to switch, it seemed as though the penalty was pretty harsh. If I started using more than 5 GB on the unlimited data plan, can't T-Mobile flag me as an excessive data user and take away all my data? When does one become an excessive data user?

They can't do anything to stop tethering on the Value Plan that they can't already do on your current Prepaid plan.
For post paid, you have 4 options for data (not including the 200mb one, which we know you wont use). 1) Unlimited data, no caps but also no tethering ( supposed to be a workaround, but it does not work for all), Then you have your Unlimited with 2gb cap, Unlimited with 5gb includes hotspot, and unlimited 10gb which also includes hotspot. SO, if you get close or hit 5gb, bump up to 10 before the billing cycle ends.

Are you tethering right now? Are you paying the extra tethering fee every month to TMo? The "no tethering clause" for truly unlimited simply means you are no longer allowed to pay a monthly fee to tether. If you have been tethering and not paying the tethering fee (and getting away with it), it'd be the same as getting away with tethering on the truly unlimited plan
To put it simply: you are not allowed to tether on ALL TMo plans unless you pay the mobile hotspot/tethering fee. Tethering without paying is no different from tethering on the truly unlimited plan
Can you tether with prepaid?
I suspect that people getting away with tethering on a prepaid plan are doing so simply because the max 4G cap is 5GB and T-Mobile really doesn't care or bother to monitor those accounts. I would think if you switch to an unlimited 4G plan they will automatically monitor the data usage.
Wish my contract with AT&T was up or I'd switch to this asap.

Interesting. No, I haven't been paying for any extra service, but I've also been very conservative with my data usage. I guess that because my tethering usage has been so low, that I've sort of come in under the radar.
My intent was to switch to the unlimited data plan, and then to use my devices for streaming Netflix, Pandora, Spotify, etc. It doesn't look like that is going to work for me after all.
Thanks for the insight.

I feel it is similiar to how AT&T's capped plans work, as long as you don't go overboard on the data (I assume it means 5GB), they don't care. If you're over 5GB and you're tethering, well...
I tether all the time on my atrix with the offical tethering (disabled the check of course), and AT&T hasn't complained. My data is never above 1.4GB anyways.

Yes simply because you have a Nexus and they don't have special software/firmware on your device to straight up block it.
T-Mobile has historically monitored people's browser UAstrings in order to "catch" tethering. They've started to shy off of this a bit now though because they're selling branded T-Mobile devices that have Chrome available or preinstalled on them, which identifies the same as desktop Chrome. I'm not really sure what their plan will be for the future of tethering, but know that you'll always have a pretty good chance of tethering on a Nexus...

Your best bet would be to call and ask only takes a few minutes

Tethering is included with data bucket plans. They'd of course want you to pay for tethering on your plan which imo is ridiculous, but that's the way it is. With unlimited data plans, tethering from At&t isn't even an option. They won't even let you pay monthly for it without giving up your unlimited plan.
You have to have the 5gb plan or mobile share plan if you wanna tether. You cant call and ask them to let you tether on a 3gb plan. If that was the case att would not have a dedicated tethering plan.

Tethering isn't allowed. Unless ya paying for it!!
But if your on a custom Rom. And it unlocked the tethering portion. Which most Rom's give you tethering capabilities anyhow.
With that being said: If you use it every now & then, and don't use big amounts of data then I'm quite sure they won't even notice you.
I'm on a grandfathered plan and use it, every now & then. When traveling mostly or when I have no internet access..

We have a ten gig plan through at&t and I can use the mobile hotspot app to tether. AT&T does not care if I tether and they would like for me to go over my ten gigs so they can charge me extra. They do not allow the folks who are grandfathered into unlimited data because they do not make enough money off of them to allow it. I do not know about the 3 gig plan.
Is there a way to hide your data? I've used ssh tunnel while tethering and I don't think there was a problem.
Xbox doesn't run natively on android phones, however web browsing does
Has anyone else recently had an offer for unlimited data from verizon? I just got that offer today and it's about 30 dollars cheaper than what I'm currently paying. Is this one of those to good to be true deals? From what I've been able to find out, it looks like it's 10gb of tethered 4g data and then switches to 3g and 22gb of data and then switches to 3g. Am I missing something? Does anyone know anything more about it? Is what I read online correct? I can't seem to find anything official from verizon regarding the fine print.

I work for VZW. It's legit, it's real unlimited with 10gb of tethering at 4g speeds and then deprioritization after 22gb of mobile use. Meaning that if you hit 22gb and are connected to a congested tower, you might be slowed down a bit as other users who don't use as much data will be pushed to the front of the line, so to speak. If you're on a tower that isn't congested, you won't experience any slowdowns. Hope that helps.
Are you in a grandfathered unlimited plan? If so, what you have is true unlimited where this plan offering is throttled after 22gb.

I still have the true unlimited plan, it's an altell plan from 15 years or more ago. But my kids and wife don't. I wonder if this would be good for me. But I make them piggy back off my WiFi tether when we go anywhere. And always stay on WiFi. I wish it was 22g per line, instead of the account.

Grandfathered true unlimited is true unlimited per fcc rules. As for having them tether I'm not sure Verizon's stance.
That said, the new plan you will be throttled and can be because it is written as such.
Just keep that in mind.
I just compared my current plan to the Unlimited Plan. I could change and it would be the same price, BUT, not really, because I would lose the Employer discount my wife gets.
