[Q] here's a new one, broken lcd, glass perfect, digitizer 50%? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so my loving, caring. soon-to-be wife, dropped her new note 2 off her lap onto our garage floor. she has a otterbox defender case and when we picked it up the glass was not cracked but the screen has a hairline crack running from the left middle along the side to the bottom. when we tried to turn it on, the screen turned on but the crack in the lcd was now obvious and the digitizer didnt work for the bottom half of the screen. now i realize that i probably have to replace the whole screen assembly but is the a person on here that can direct me to a local repair person in san diego or maybe a site where i can order it online for under $200?
i know its a long shot and the misses can still use the s pen to use the screen but we ended up leaving it off as over time i noticed the screen getting more and more pixelated from the crack line.
tl;dr front glass is perfect, managed to break lcd and digitizer, am i really boned?

Thats pretty amazing, you can aks sammy how much it will cost you if they repair it, but I dont think it will be under 200

You're very unlucky..How did it crack with an Otterbox ??Bad karma..However i fell sorry for you and your note 2..Contact Sammy and see what can you do..You can try to replace it yourself but you'll lost the warranty..

so turns out the phone still had warranty and i dont need a receipt! (traded our old iphone 4s's for two note 2's plus $200 cash on craigslist) called samsung and told them that the phone all of a sudden had cracks under the glass and was very "hot" from charging, they are replacing it no questions asked! thanks anyways guys, il be sure to buy my wife a clutch for her phablet

Nice .! Move ...n thanx for idea....

Only??damn are u lucky..guess you didnt damage any other parts of the phone...Next time be more careful when u hold something worth half ur month's paycheck
Did you have any sort of protection on your S2 , case or screen-protector, just out of interest.
oow, what happened with your SGS2? Do you accidently drop it? Can your give us some picture of broken gorilla glass of yours?
Gorilla glass protects you from scratching not cracking. I had my SGS1 crack as well and I did lots of research on the best means on to replace it. I found out that most people (all that I saw actually) had the crack starting from the home button. The flaw with the Sgs1 & 2 is the button brings a weak point for the glass to crack. I bet yours cracked from there as well?
It's so weak there that, the hit that made mine crack was so small that I didn't bother to check the phone to see if it got damaged.

Ouch, that.s a lot to ask for a small piece of glass...but needs must I guess. Had a couple drops with my sg2 but it's my impression that the tough case's raised edges saved the glass. useful obsv of button as weakspot, had no idea - I guess it would be a similar weakness with our friend iphone.

Already Shattered My New S2!

Long story short- I was baby sitting my toddler who had just learned to walk and as I was reaching out to prevent her from falling I dropped my 21 day old S2 from approximately 4 feet onto tile. Phone fell screen first. There wasn't a sound except hearing my heart beat and couldn't believe my eyes as I turned the phone around and the LCD was shattered but still responsive.
Every sad story has a happy ending- my baby is ok and my rugrat is too. Sent the phone to Samsung to have it repaired. I didn't have insurance but my mastercard is reimbursing me since it's within a 60 day purchase protection period. Total bill from Samsung for a new LCD and touchapanel was $161. It was a 6 business day turnaround time back to my front door. The saddest part of the story is that I was just touting to my brother how awesome it is to have gorilla glass and the nexus galaxy won't. The irony is that it doesn't matter.
Wow, that looks like my friend's iPhone 4, if you got that to land on one of those corners, who cares about special glass, that iPhone was a goner!
Good to see that you don't have to pay for the repairs though. $161 is pretty expensive for only a touchscreen panel! :O
These kind of stories make me glad I have insurance on my phone.
Im wondering waht gorilla glass even does now since ive scratches on my screen...
I've learned that just because a phone has gorilla glass doesn't mean you can be careless
The screen will scratch so if I have to carry it in my pocket I make sure it's empty. Every time I drop it I send a prayer up before it even hits the ground lol.
My girlfriends Moto Defy has a shattered screen and my old Defy had scratches on the display.
Glad you got your screen replaced, I would have been heart broken lol.

Almost makes the $8 asurion insurance not worth it because of the $130 deductible
This makes me want to go out and get a screen protector and a case...lol
Scared me
That does it !! no kids are touching my phone, better yet I am kicking the kids out and I am ripping the tile out also !!
Seeing that pic made my balls clench
ouch! seeing that picture makes my heart break
glad to hear it got all taken care of
wow... $170 for a screen is a bit much
i wonder if we can get it cheaper on ebay

LOL I put my wife in that bracket. She drops every single phone she touches all the time. I'm amazed that her iphone screen still hasn't cracked yet
I didn't want to deal with the hassle with getting the right type of screen and learning how to replace it. Made the decision much easier when mastercard would take care if it so I would still have a warranty also.
PS. I took those pics with my vibrant.I actually like the size of that phone better but do like everything else about this phone!

$130 is cheap compared to the $500 it would cost to buy a new one..even if you added in the $8/mo for however many months
Hope you get a nice screen replacement. The reason why the screen is so expensive is because it's one-piece. AMOLED are printed on the glass so once that shatters, the glass (digitizer) and the AMOLED assembly has to be replaced. This also goes for the iphone 4. The glass is inseparable from the LCD.
Even on other phones, the glass+assembly is $80 dollars and the rest is the cost of labour. Better luck next time. I broke my iphone digitizer 3x and they were only $10 to replace because i could replace it individually.
So for everyone else, take care of that piece of glass
I own Gigahertz Computers in Warner Robins GA and we are Mac/mobile device specialists. If you ever need a screen fixed, pm me. I love to hook up my bros!!!

I dont know why someone wouldnt put a good tpu case on any phone.. i dropped my phone on concrete with my body glove case and nothing happened cuz my case protects the whole phone lol.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Wow that sucks... good move on your part to claim it through master card. Does the new screen look any different or better with less lines and clearer whites?
I have the same case on the phone as you, has the same drop but all OK. The only difference is I have the zagg protector on the front. It did screw up the protector but they're sending a new one for the cost of shipping. I'm wondering if that protector has a tiny bit of shock absorbance in it.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
when I dropped the phone it didn't have a case on it since I was actually drying it from water that said toddler also spilled on the poor S2. I'm pretty sure the D30 case you see in the picture would have prevented it from breaking.
The screen is the same great quality but I didn't have an issue with the old one to complain about.
I still wouldn't get insurance.never had a major issue with previous 2 smart phones and consider this a freak accident. I can almost guarantee their profit margin is high on selling insurance which means its a bad bet for the consumer.

This is off topic, and it may be a first timers mistake, but you don't 'babysit' your own kids. That would be considered 'spending time' with them. You babysit other peoples kids.

Help Glass cracked. thinking about changing it

Ive never dropped a cellphone but today was that day. I had bought an invisible shield to put it on today when i got home. Right when i got home i put the phone in my pocket but it had it had hole. BAM. it dropped down my leg and hit the concrete face down. It shattered the digitizer but the lcd is intact. My question was, would i be able to buy a digitizer and change it without having to pay 180 for a new digitizer/lcd ? any help would be appreciated.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I'm fairly sure I've read that the digitizer is fused with the screen.
Yeah there's no way going around it. They're glued together as one piece.
FFFFFFFUUUUUUUU dammit

I spoke to some rep from samsung yesterday on my phone and they said it would be 179.99 to fix it. But my question is, do i have to include the lcd ? Because my lcd isnt broke and they sell the glass on ebay for 20 bucks. I would rather try and fix it myself and break it, THEN send it to samsung if i cant fix it instead of paying 180 bucks for just some glass since my lcd is not broken and have them rip me off because they will def reuse my lcd and win anyways.

It's been answered.. if you want to do it yourself you're going to end up breaking your LCD and need to buy the part or send it to Samsung anyways. There is no way around it.
There is a video on YouTube with somebody changing only the glass. Check on YouTube so you will have an idea about how to do it and if you will be able.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I dont believe they are "fused" together. from my history in repairing phones, there is just a small sliver of double sided tape holding the digitizer to the LCD screen. and all you need to do is use a plastic seperating tool to slowly seperate the two. Also, use a good hot hair dryer to help melt away the adhesive. good luck!
Go to a hardware store and pick up a heat gun. Take the phone completely apart, take out all the electronics. Heat the screen evenly and slowly start pulling the screen up little by little while hitting it with the heat gun.
Take your time and don't rush. It can be done but it's not easy and can damage the LCD.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If you do this HEAT the **** out of the LCD and digitizer. It will be very hard to separate the two. Please take pictures and tell us you're approach to help other S3 users.
I had a long ass post written but now it's gone. boo.
anyways. Here's something to consider as to why you can't separate it. If you believe there's a way to get around it then good luck.

[Q] cracked something. lcd?

Hey guys. My wife just broke her gs3. She lost it in the snow on some stairs and while looking for it it fell off the side of the stairs and dropped about 6 ft onto concrete. I have an otterbox defender case for her but no matter how much I tell her to put it om she rarely does. Needless to say, I am less than thrilled. So.... the phone turns on and the capacitive buttons light up, she can hear notifications but the screen is black. Looks fine until close inspection but then you can see a small crack under the glass (im assuming its the lcd panel.) So how can I fix this? I am fairly good at taking stuff like this apart as im always working on radios, tv's, and other electronics at work.
Search here or youtube there is a vid with step by step on replacing the gorilla glass and im not sure if that includee the digitizer or not.
My sister cracked that screen underneath too. She took it into Sprint and they said there was no way they could replace it, because its not the glass on top, its the one underneath
She had to activate her old OG EVO and is just stuck waiting for her next upgrade now.

Same thing happened to me a couple months ago, yeah Sprint said they couldn't fix it, I had to pay for a new one, even with full insurance. Honestly I'd just try searching eBay or something for a Samsung Galaxy S3 OLED panel, and YouTube for instructions. I wish you luck sir!

You would need to replace the screen and the LCD which i believe are sold seperatly but have been known to be prone to issues if you don't purchase them together that being said it will cost you around 70-80 to replace yourself and sprint WILL replace the screen you just have to pay around 100-150 for the new screen and installation

It's not the screen that's cracked, it's only the LCD (actually an OLED screen). Trust me I went to the corporate Sprint store by me in NYC and they said they could not fix it, they could only replace the front glass screen.
like everyone said its the digitizer underneith, theres a guy on you tube, name is L35505 or L3SSONS or some stuff. he does a FULL replacement i think. will help you alot. be careful, take a saterday, kick out the kids and everyone and you shouldnt have any problems

Please help, what can I do

Replacing just the glass

I shattered my screen a few weeks ago and had great results replacing just the glass, not the digitizer, however I have a small problem. I didn't realize the adhesive was still on the LCD, I kind of ruined it along the left side of my phone, it doesn't stick properly, kind of looks like a bad screen protector. I have to keep pushing it down to get rid of the haze. What I'm wondering is, can I remove the adhesive all together and just replace the sticker bit along the border of the glass, so there's no adhesive between the glass and LCD without it affecting the performance of the touch screen? It works great as is, the haze is just annoying me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd hate to do it and lose the ability to use my phone

My English is not my native language, but considering the word adhesive, you must referring to the double side tape part that holds the digitizer and the glass together.
Assuming that, from my own experience it is a no-go. If you are experiencing sticking parts (ie. it's not properly glued) I am afraid you might have to replace the whole adhesive.
I had the same issue on my Desire HD and about 1 month after replacement, same as you kept pushing it to take the haze away, the inevitable happened. A tiny opening not being able to see with the naked eye, left enough room for dust to enter under the glass. One month later, there was so much dust in it that I had to buy a new full screen.
However, months later, I tried some old trick for future experiments You can eventually take a paint dryer, and try to heat up the lose part then applying some light pressure onit. This process should make the glue on the adhesive very soft and with a bit of luck it might stick on the glass.
I'd say perhaps 60-70 degrees. Don't worry, even 100 degrees won't break your screen unless u're heating it up for more than 10 minutes or so
GL
Fantastic, I'll give heat a try to get it to stick. Unfortunately I can't find the double sided tape anywhere otherwise I'd replace it. I'm in Australia so shipping is pretty expensive from most places outside of the country. I really appreciate the reply
I bought the glass alone off eBay, I believe it was around $30. To replace it took a lot of patience, a hairdryer on low for 15 mins to heat the glue up, finding a spot to slowly pry the glass away from the LCD. As I said, a lot of patience and a lot of mess since my screen was badly cracked and kept breaking off. Was worth it to save $300 though. Figured I could do it for $30 myself and if it broke I'd have had to of paid for both either way

It seems you already build enough experience with heating up the device. I hope it does the trick for you. On the other hand the adhesive itself shouldn't be much of a problem. They are not made by Samsung itself and if it's not working and still refuse to buy a new glass, I'd just go to a repair shop as I did here in the Netherlands and ask the repair guy to order it. It shouldn't cost more than a few bucks. On top of that just google "note 2 screen adhesive" and look at some amazon/ebay hits, just take that picture/info to the repair guy as a reference to know what to order
