Sorry to post a new thread but I have been searching for a couple of days now and am still confused, so please forgive me if I have missed the obvious answer. (I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for a very treatable form of cancer but the chemo is messing with the logical part of my brain, so again, please forgive a noob/silly/obvious question!)
I have a Desire HD and I am very confused about how to ensure that my apps are installed to my SD card. When I flashed a custom ROM, I am fairly certain that I did not partition the SD card (unless the flashing process does it automatically).
In my searching on this site, I've read somewhere that you no longer need to partition the card. I've also read something about the fact that Gingerbread roms now 'format' the SD card as XFAT4 file system while flashing. Is this correct? If so, does this mean that my apps will all automatically install to the SD card? I keep getting limited space on the current SD card which has more than enough room for my apps. (Hope that makes sense.)
Sorry to be such a noob but I am totally confused and just need to know what on earth to do with the SD card.
Any help would be very much appreciated!! Thanks in advance.
First off we are all hoping you pull through. Get Well.
You do not have to partition your sd card. And doubt there is a custom ROM when flashed that will do it. My card is fat32 with only the primary partition and has always been that way. I have never reformatted my card. If you are flashing a new ROM and you do a complete wipe it might be a good idea to format your card yourself, either through your computer or your phone. Then you can have a fresh clean start. Of course back up all your important info to your pc first.
Your phone by default installs apps to the phone's internal memory. There are some apps that you install that will install to the sd card from the market. I am guessing you are running out of internal memory and not sd card memory though.
There are a few apps that can MOVE most of your apps to the sd card. I don't think there is one that will install them to the sd card by default. They have to be moved there by you. You don't need an app to move your apps as froyo and gingerbread ROMs can do it for you if you have a sense based ROM. Other ROMs may also work this way but I am only familiar with sense based ROMs.
Go to your app drawer > hit "menu" button > select "remove app" > select "On SD card" tab. It will list all your apps that are on the SD card as well as those that can be moved. The ones with a check are already on your SD card. If you want to move one that is not checked just select it and then select "move to sd card". It will move the app then hit the back button. Repeat this process until you have all your apps moved that you wish to move.
If your ROM cannot do this on its own there is a varety of apps on the market that can do this. Just do a search for "app2sd" and you will see the multitude of downloads. Most are free or have free versions.
Again get well.
Thank you soooo very much. Your reply was very helpful. (I didn't want to brick my phone. )
Also, thanks for the well wishes. I am definitely getting better. The prognosis is very good, but chemo isn't much fun and really messes with your brain, to say least. Fortunately, I'm nearly finished. I wouldn't have even mentioned chemo in the first place but I didn't want anyone to think I was either too lazy to search properly or too dimwitted to understand all the information.
Thank you for your good wishes and also for your speedy and helpful reply.
Plus one to that dude. I wish you well in your recovery.

[GUIDE] [FAT32] [EXT2] [any android] How to Partition your Android MicroSD Card
NOTE: I’m not responsible if you brick your phone, be very careful.
________________________________________
Borrowed these Screenshots from:
sayhellotwoheaven ( Go give HIM thanks too!!)
Requirements:
- A Smartphone
- Root
- Busybox
- Android
- A FORMATTED 2GB MicroSD Card or Higher
- The MiniTool Partition Wizard (Free)
- Link2SD
Step 1: Partition your MicroSD Card
Note: To make this post, I will use a 16 GB card as an example. You can use any size you prefer.
First: Connect your MicroSD with the adapter to your computer and open the MiniTool Partition Wizard.
You can see the principal partition of you memory card. Right Click on it and Choose Delete.
Insure that you select your memory card and NOT your hard drive!!!!!
Next: right click on your memory card and click "Create". Choose the size you want for External Memory. Remember to leave the amount that you want to use for Internal Memory FREE then click OK.
Next, click on the Unallocated space; click yes to create a new partition. WARNING! – USE EXT2 NOT EXT4!!!. Click OK .
Now click OK then click apply (TOP-LEFT CORNER)
Wait for the action finish.
When finished: disconnect your MicroSD Card and follow step 2 on your phone.
Step 2: Setting Up Your Phone: Link2SD
Now, proceed to configure the EXT2 partition for apps partition (INTERNAL MEMORY) on your phone.
First Install Link2SD on your phone.
Shut down your Phone and put the partitioned MicroSD card in your phone. Now Start your Phone and open "Link2SD", and give Root Permissions. Select ext2, wait while script is created then reboot your phone.
WARNING! – USE EXT2 NOT EXT4!!!
Note: If you have Link2SD already installed, you will need to clear cache and data.
Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>click Link2SD
Select clear CACHE and then select clear DATA.
WARNING! – USE EXT2 NOT EXT4!!!
Select OK AND REBOOT AT THIS POINT.
After rebooting: open Link2SD and go to Settings, and choose these parameters below:
Now, when your install an app, it will automatically be moved to the EXT2 partition. Remember, when you want to install an app and want to have it in your phone memory, uncheck "Auto Link" in Link2SD Settings, then install the Application. Afterwards, recheck "Auto Link". With Link2SD you can install, uninstall, Link and remove links of your apps. You can also do a few other things that are described in the app’s description on the Play Store.
Is this working for any one? It worked great for me.
Would greatly appreciate at least a couple people tell me if they have tried it or not. I did my sons concord this way.

This worked great, I am now able to install many more apps on a T-Mobile concord android phone. I do have a question, even though I am able to install many more apps, I still see the internal memory space getting lower and lower, does that mean that every app I install, it will still require some space in the internal memory? do I always need to move the apps to sd card in order to save internal memory space? is there a way to move all the app into the external space partition? Again thank you so much for putting this information together, I can now use T-Mobile concord phone with many more apps as I used to.

If you partitioned the SD card and inserted it in the phone BEFORE you installed link2SD and followed ALL of the instructions, step by step, then a very small amount of space is stored on the actual internal memory.
FYI - You can uninstall all of the T-Mobile apps. My account, TV, the Samsung account thing, layer?, etc... DO NOT uninstall anything google or Android. E.G GMAIL, CALENDERS, or anything else that you are unsure of.

fathertomany's photobucket pics aren't showing up for me on 2 pcs and 2 mobile phones.
make sure your settings are on your downloaded apps show "Linked -> SD Card" not "on SD Card".
take a look at this FAQ for more info: search or google link2sd.info/faq for more info
btw-make sure both partitions are listed as "primary" not "virtual".
fathertomany, thanks again for spearheading these mods! hope your phone gets fixed

I have received my new phone!! yay!! now I can be of more assistance.
BTW - My new phone is:
Android version: 2.3.7
Kernel: 2.6.35.7+
Build Number: V768V1.0.0B19
It was already factory when I rooted.
I had to use SUPERSU. SUPERUSER installed and granted permissions but would not update the binary. it would fail on checking to see if superuser worked.
after i partition it can i put it back to normal? if i change phones or whatever
Yes. Just repartition the entire card to fat/fat32 after deleting both partitions, with the mini partition tool.

copy to larger sd card?
I used this method with a 4gb card and it word wonderfully. I now have a 32gb card that I would like to use. How would I go about copying the card. I tried using mini tools to copy partitions but the phone did not work with new sd card. Thanks again for the tutorial on the Tmobile Concord and this one.
thanks!
Is there a possability this also works with Jellybean or does Jellybean uses another app for this ?
TQ BOSS
Partition the card then just copy files like you normally would. There is a chance the concord cannot read a card that big.

Ok so I am having problems with my 32gb SD card. Got the "You need to format this drive" message in Windows. it is a Class 4. SanDisk. I flashed Cyanogenmod and I need to format my SD card and there seams to be no way to format it via Android.
Windows does not want to flash it.
I got it to format in Ubuntu although I would really prefer to format it via android.
Also on this Cyanogenmod Rom (10.0) I have yet to find a way to set the camera app to save to SD
Any help is appriciated

i'm on tasks aokp and in camera i tap the on-screen settings option and i get "storage" as the first option on the top of the list. from there i can choose sd card, etc. this may not be an option in CM. just thought you could look there if you hadnt yet. cheers
A little while back I posted a thread asking the following.
"Just recently rooted my friend's GN2, I transfered the files to the SD card and went into CWM recovery. I'm having 2 issues.
1: The phone says there's not enough room to make a backup when there clearly is. I have about 2 gigs on the internal, but but it either says I have 3mb of free space or 0.
2: I click 'install from SD' and the only file it sees is "-clockworkmod/ ".
What am I doing wrong? I personally have an S2 and it's very similar but these two things are preventing me from flashing any rom"
The only person to respond recommended I format the sd card so I did so. However the phone still did not recognize any files in the sd card so I couldn't flash any rom. Upon startup it began boot looping and the phone is no longer activated? It can't make calls or send texts and reboots every minute upon ' failed activation'. The phone currently is useless. I'm not new to flashing roms I've been doing it for years but this is the first time I'm stumped thanks to some bad advice (not blaming that person) and it's not even my phone. Luckily I just got an htc one and I could give my friend the my s2 until the problem is fixed...any ideas how to fix it? Or unroot at least to bring in for repair?

Try using twrp instead. Sorry I couldny be more help. But I have never used cwm on this phone since I got it. Only twrp. You can find it in original dev section.

Yes use twrp. Find the latest version and flash it in clockwork. I havent used cwm since my og evo lol.
Maybe I'm old school but I'm a long time flasher and I've always just been more comfortable with cwm. But I'm not so sure it's a kernel issue?
Edit: and the issue is that I can't flash anything because I can't store anything on the sd card. I'm thinking of odining to a stock build?

The only thing I can suggest is doing a quick format on the SD card to FAT32, especially if the card is a 64 GB card. Also, some Sandisk 64 GB cards were bad from the factory, so check that too. Finally, if all else fails, try breaking the phone even more to the point it won't even boot and get a replacement.

Don't come up with one. Just take it in and show them. Before you take it in, if you can, try to reset the flash counter. If they can check that and see it isn't correct, you're in trouble. If it's reset or it can't be checked, then take it in.

Ok...what files did you transfer to the sd card? Was it the internal or external? Even 2 gigs on the internal for a backup may not be enough. I have a backup that is just over 3 gigs. As far as formatting your external sd what did you do ? Fat32? Personally TWRP is the way to go. Try to format fat 32, download a stock rooted TW rom and put on external sd, also dl TWRP recovery to external sd. Boot into cwm recovery and try to flash twrp. If that works out pull battery put back in volume up+home+power. Hopefully that gets you to twrp, if so go to wipe then factory reset. If you click on advanced it will let you wipe system which couldn't hurt. After that, back arrow on bottom of screen to twrp home screen. Click install...choose external then locate where rom is...hopefully on root of external and see if that helps.
Oh and was the phone activated prior to flashing?

Please do the following:
01). Format the SD card to FAT32 (NOT EXFAT OR NTFS) on ANOTHER computer and do NOT use the built in windows format options. Use a third party tool like guiformat.exe and do NOT USE QUICK FORMAT. (With my current sd card, windows format failed, guiformat.exe partially failed(and by failed I mean formatted fine but caused problems being seen) but I installed and used eausus partition master to regular format it to fat32 and followed the next few steps and its been working fine ever since.
02). Immediately after formatting the SD card slow format to fat32 in easus partition master create a text file on the sd card in its root directory (I've had an issue before where my SD card would not be seen or writable by certain devices if the root directory was 100% empty), before you copy any further files insert the SD card into the phone and use your recovery kernel(CWM/TWRP) to navigate to the root directory of the sd card and insure that you can in fact see the text file you created, POWER OFF THE PHONE(or alternatively unmount it in android terminal if possible) before removing or inserting the SD card(also always eject from the PC before removing, do not just rip it out off the usb slot/card reader), insert the SD card back into your PC/card reader and copy TWRP to the sd card.
03). Boot back into your current recovery and Install TWRP(if it's not already) you may prefer CWM but TWRP just causes people a lot less bugs in general.
04). Verify in the backup section of TRWP that you have explicitly selected external storage as the backup location and given the backup a name, as internal storage is selected by default, and you very well may not have enough free internal storage for the backup, regardless of whatever reasons you think you should.
05). Its probably a good idea to turn off md5 verification of the backup, I do this every time, the one time I did try to verify a backup with an md5 checksum it failed, I unchecked this option backed up restored to it and all was fine(and still is), also a good idea to uncheck md5 when installing roms/kernels/apk's as most don't have md5.
05). If the above does not work you probably have a bad SD card, try another and post back here.

There is
no external sd card in the phone. Just a 16g internal, and I've wiped pretty much everything so there shouldn't be a problem with room. I'll go out and buy an external and attempt to flash something.

It should not rely on the internal. Download mode is deep down in the bootloader. If you borked that then jtag or sending it to samsung/asurion is the only option.

Try a stock rooted rom and see if it works. Because it should at least give you the boot.img in the rom so you might be able to get past the boot screen. Hopefully it will re partition your phone. Im not for sure but its worth a shot.

Instaled ROM, from SD Card, and everything goes well, but now, I can't reach my SD Card from phone.
When I pull out SD card, in notification bar I get message that my SD Card is pull out and to put other SD card.
I don't know what is wrong. If I boot into recovery I still see my SD Card, folder in it, ROM instalation....
Can someone tell me hot to get access to my SD Card?

Probably that I read a lot and don't want to ask questions if there is answer on the forum, but now, I stacked with my SD card.

Do you have any sdcard partitions made up, ie ext3 or a swap partition? What does the rom say? Can you screenshot?

First, thanks for offering help, but I solved my problem myself, just forgotten to post answer here.
I had ext 4 partition from beginning, but problem was that by default my ext partition set as logical not primary, so I just changed to primary and everything goes well.
