Best ROM?

I am having a serious amount of trouble trying to decide what ROMs to flash and which to leave in the dust. I'm also contemplating cyanogenmod, but it's still beta. HELP!

"best" is really subjective. Everyone has their own tastes. I say stick with stock for a while, at least you know you will get the OTA updates. If it meets your needs, great. Read up on the features of each ROM, and see if any of the features are interesting to you, try them out.

I know it's subjective. I want a general idea of what the best ROM would be all around. I'll wait for cyanogenmod 9... Either way, I'm happy with stock, I see so many ROMs in the development section that I feel confused. And I only wanted a general, basic suggestion. Maybe you (or someone else) could give me at least that?

Little enhancements for ICS. Speed enhancements. Optimizations. Tweakability. Flashing different kernels for OC and UV support (although I don't fully understand it). insecure boot image. Root (although you don't necessarily need a custom ROM for the latter two)...
Not a big fan of themes.
I guess, I've used cyanogen exclusively on my Nexus One, and my Nexus S. I want to branch out and try other ROMs, but I'm also not a flash head. I'd rather find one good ROM and stick with it (like I'm doing with stock). I've tried MoDaCo's (Paul O'Brien's stuff) and Android Revolution HD, and I feel like they're not too different than stock, so I revert back. What do you use?

Try out the gummi rom. It's based off the 4.0.3 build and basically stock, which IMO is perfect. It has the extended power down menu (reboot/recovery/bootloader), the battery percentage in the battery icon. And the Gapps for it includes Google Wallet which is nice. The kernel it's running can be overclocked and undervolted. All in all its a very nice looking rom and I haven't ran into a problem with it yet.

I prefer Android Open Kang Project by Roman, or Bigxie's AOSP 4.0.3 stock w/optimizations (currently using) with Franco Kernel (nightly 3)

Thanks man, I just feel like I don't want to deal with nightlies. This phone is my daily driver so I want something stable. That's why stock is kicking so much ass right now. But obviously owning a Nexus I feel like I missing out on some really important mods and what not.
I want a ROM that doesn't require a lot of maintenance.

I would definitely recommend Roman's AOKP. There's nothing unstable about it and it offers more customization than anything else released currently.

i downloaded the gummi one but heard of people having gapps issues so hesitated. currently using ZYGOT3 1.3 as it specified "final" and was posted by Droid Th3ory who made tons of roms for the Thunderbolt & a few Bionic ones. seems stable so far & better then stock.

Anyone feel that 4.0.3 is a bit more laggy in certain areas than 4.0.1 (or 4.0.2)?
I notice right away that the task switcher is a lot quicker (no lag on pushing the button) with 4.0.3 but I noticed everything else a bit more sluggish. Watching the apps flow in when pushing the app drawer button is chunky with 4.0.3 and pulling down the notification bar stutters as well.
This is my experience with AOKP and Bigxie's AOSP which are both 4.0.3 ROMs compared with the stock 4.0.1 ROM that came with the phone.

What I need is a ROM with working 4g, GPS and Camera
The phone is used for work.
I drive all over place, putting 100+ miles a day, so GPS is very important for me.
All my jobs are recieved via Google email.
I rather use 4g to pick my gps loc quickly and get load my emails quickly..
At the moment, I have to wait 3-5min for the email to be recieved and/or open to read. My GPS sometimes tells me, can not find my current location and it sucks. TIME is money in my line of work. Every wasteful minutes I can cut off = more money for me.
Camera and Video Recorder is another thing mandatory in my work. Uploading and sending it to corporate. Speed speed speed (4g)
During my drive time - I use my phone as a radio..
work hours - 10-12hrs a day.. so I need a rom that will benefit me the most.
I make alot of phone calls, alot of emailing, uploading pics and videos (short under 1min). I tend to stay on 4g as much as I can before I switch to 3g or turn it off during downtimes. I would like to have 4g on all day (10-12hr) before recharging. I do have a recharger in my car though, so I would say there is atleast 1-2hrs worth of charge time during my working hours.
I was told to check these 3 roms out but can't see what the difference are.

Well. I can only speak on Nitrous as I haven't tried the others. But I will say, if you aren't concerned about having the prettiest toy, its a great one. Very smooth. Expect a stock type of rom with alot of CPU speed tweaks baked in. Very similar to the stock in terms of what it gives you visually. Some nice little graphical changes but nothing impressive.
Its very good for what you are looking for. I never had a problem with the GPS. Battery life was about on par with stock. But I would recommend rom toolbox pro and under clocking the kernel .
I actually always keep this rom on my SD in case something happens crazy with the current one. That way I can always flash back to something minimalistic and stable. Give it a shot...
...I must let you know tho CM9 has been very stable for me as well and you get 4.0.4 opposed to Nitrous 2.3.5
CM9 is so far the best rom I've flashed so far. Only downside is battery life has been iffy at best.
Give MIUI from swiper a try also. 2.3.2 was very nice. Stay away from MIUI ICS builds. They've been quite buggy for me so far.

Try Cyanogenmod 7.2 everything works nearly flawless. I use gps status app, and if you need more accuracy use galandy's gps fix (search for these).
You do need to flash gapps as well, for your google services. Just download the rom and gapps from cyanogenmod.com

I don't agree with trying 7.2 cynogenmod, a great rom, but wouldn't be good for your situation. 7.2 is a AOSP rom which doesn't give you the capability of updating your prl, which should be a priority if your traveling and on the go. Out of the three roms, synergy is outdated and the developers have moved on. Classic 0.1.0 is a optimized base rom that is strippped down and meant for performance. If you like a stock feel, definitely a good choice. Nitrous is a 1.0 sense rom that's very fast, would be my choice of the three. If you want my opinion, I wouldn't choose any of the three. Go with a senseless 1.0 rom, which has sense stripped out. This gives you more internal memory, faster speeds, and makes for a fast phone. Here's my choices based on the public's opinion of what is the best out right now for our EVO.
1. senseless - Alter RC2 rom
2. sense - tommytomatoes finale
3. AOSP - Deck's Reloaded

I simply flash 00001.prl by tecknowfile.

Simple enough then, jump on the bandwagon and get Deck's Reloaded .44, definitely fastes rom on our evo at the moment, has working 4G, and all the google apps are inverted black to give a sexy sleek feel.

also, what does toolbox Pro do and how do I underclock a kernel? (App? if so, name)

you have me intriqued with the senseless 1.0 rom. I could care less for bloat apps and other bs. So the less, the better. With that said, senseless 1.0 = senseless - Alter RC2 rom???

I've read each one of them, 2 of them doesnt tell me what kernel they are running and other the info that is stated, I have no idea what it means. It's not like I kept up with all the lingo and terms since I was here last time.
Last thing I remember was Gingerbread coming out.
Also, 1.5 yrs ago, each rom had a detail info of what they had. What apps they added, removed, etc... now not so much.
im slowly re-learning what is new in the evo 4g world.

4.04 is icecream sandwiched while 2.3.5 is gingerbread
Cm9 is based off ice cream sandwich(4.xx)
Cm7 is based off gingerbread (2.3x)
Tommy finale is based off gingerbread and so is any sense based Rom for the EVO. No ics for awhile
Miui has both an ice cream version and gingerbread version. You're going to have to search that. In order to over and underclock the CPU, you need a custom kernel. If you use tommys Rom (my current setup) I would use the underground kernel by ca1ne. ROM tool box will help with that. Or system tuner. Another good app

Sorry bud for the lack of a good explanation. These guys are all correct in directing you to the rom that would suit you best. Especially the last post. I was trying to say to stay away from miui ics for the time being. It's been quite buggy and laggy even with mason kernel compared to team dirts CM9. Mini is great and easy but stuck to a gingerbread base if you like it.

Senseless just means that Rosie is stripped out of the rom which takes up to much space and memory. Alter rom comes with Go Launcher Ex baked in as the launcher, but you can choose any launcher your comfortable with. The only reason why I recommend Alter rom is because it is the fastest/snappiest senseless rom available. Using a2sd, I was using less than 60 MB internal space. Great for gaming and battery life. Graynode is the developer and is releasing 1.0 later this week, but RC2 is worth it. Just to clarify, it is a 1.0 sense based rom, similar to what came stock on your Evo, but the Rosie and everything sense has been stripped out of it, hence the name "senseless".

What is so good about JellyBean?

Well over the weekend I tried 4 different JellyBean ROM's, I used stock kernel or kernels supplied by the ROM creator or Franco's. I just don't see what the excitement is about?! Am I crazy or blind or something? I figure I must be missing something and thus why the question. I want to know from you what you find so great about JellyBean that current ICS 4.0.4 ROM's don't already offer. Ya ya I know, it's early but still. You opt to drop a feature filled ROM for JB which to me is as plain jane as you can get. I think battery is better, wifi/data handling is better but beyond that I just don't see anything that says, GO TO JB! I guess I'm spoiled, I don't know. I use AOKP and BlackICE predominantly on my phone and the ability to change theme's, status bar options, nav bar resizing are all very important for me. So today I am back on BlackICE and just elated to have all my customization options back.

Well...While I'm camping AOKPM6 as well...
I also understand the thrive to be on the newest [best] thing.
Some people will trade features for simple bragging rights...
It's also got google now. And is much more fluid.
Aside from that; if you're currently happy where you are: stay there.
If you NEED the latest and greatest, you've probably already moved on.

Jelly Bean is way faster then stock ICS 4.0.4
Everything that I do is faster now. It's soo smooth! I haven't (yet) used a custom rom for my Galaxy NEXUS so I came from the most stock you can get. My phone is also just ~10 days old. I have never experienced android 4.0.1 to it's fullest extent because I went straight from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 within 10 minutes (OTA update) Used 4.0.4 for a while since last thursday which is the day I got the update to Jelly Bean. It's just smoother. Especially the browser with playing youtube flash videos is way faster now. It used to be very laggy if I tried to zoom in/out and it was a little bit choppy when scrolling up and down. Now with Jelly Bean, the scrolling is way faster (not buttery smooth but it's faster!!) and zooming in/out is buttery smooth WITH playing video's through the stock browser (not chrome). Those were 2 720p video's playing at the same time and the performance was great. Way better then I had with Android 4.0.4
Now, if I find any slowdown I blame the phone, yet those same slowdowns also happen on a stock Galaxy S3 which my brother owns. The phone's UI is faster than a GS3 (which already is super fast!)
What jelly bean does is, it enhances the Stock android 4.0.4. You are on a custom rom which already enhanced stock 4.0.4. So I don't know how much a improvement you will notice but just wait till the dev's release an enhanced Jelly Bean Rom! That will kick ass for sure!

While I found some things faster I didn't find the whole experience better. I guess as you said I'm using a custom ROM and kernel. A lot of mix and match but its pretty lag free for me overall.
Ya I guessitmate it will be faster with a custom JB ROM. So far all ones I tried are just to stock and not much of an improvement.

JB is awesome. and pretty fast. but in real world usage ( for me anyway ) not enough for me to stick with it over a custom ICS rom.. went back to AOKP and trinity . best combo for me. once the other roms catch up with JB etc. will switch.. but im content atm..

Idk how its possible to not see a noticeable difference between the 2 if you have used JB. I love JB but its killing me not having features of custom ROMs. So I'd definitely say stay on what makes you happy but once the same thing is available on JB there's def. No reason not to switch.

see for me i find all those customization fetures kinda useless and over whelming at times. id find mself just changing stuff just cuz i could. often breaking or messing other apps up. took me a week to figure out that if you fool with the navigation bar the game nba jam (which i play daily) wouldnt start.
but on JB its all about performance. its smoother/faster than ICS. custom/stock. its its project butter engine.
animations more flluid, no choppiness and of course it has the siri competior google now. not to mention its prettied up a few gapps like google music/youtube/sms. the notification bar is waaaaaay more usefull, though still without toggles.

This thread makes no sense. Of course custom Roms are gonna be better. None of the devs have merged the jelly bean source her so we only have ICS Roms for now. Jelly bean brings significant smoothness and speed, Google now, offline speech text. Its great improvements.

Butter makes it better, duh!

Stock Jellybean > Custom rom: silly?

So I basically just flashed my yakjuxw build to yakju, to get my hands on Jellybean. The experience is more than awesome, buttery smooth and fast! Now, I wonder, what will (for example) AOKP bring to the table to make it 'even more' buttery and fast, etc? I'm not much of a tweaker, I just really wonder if there will be any SIGNIFICANT advantages over stock rom. It all seems a bit silly to me.

Every other Android phone I have had I've flashed all the ROMs available purely to try and have the stock experience or get to a new version of Android. I purchased the Galaxy Nexus so I would get all the updates when released and to enjoy the stock experience, I have no intention of installing custom ROMs on this device.

aokp brings few options to try with not the speed. It's the user experience that get enhanced with custom roms.
Similarly cm10 aosp and stock custom Roms do the same but not as much as cm10 and aokp do natively.

So what you're saying is that it's mostly visual differences? I mean what are the key elements that AOKP/ CM10 provide?

Watch a video or something. Aokp brings a lot of new features, such as customizable navbar, options to move your clock and change your battery icon and what not, weather and calendar on your lock screen. That's the type of things you'll see on a custom ROM.

Custom ROMs are more about extra features. At least when it comes to builds like Jelly Bean. I don't see Jelly Bean needing much in performance enhancements.

Aokp or cyan brings TONS of useful real world features. Its not just visual stuff or fluff. If you are asking then you aren't aware what these roms offer.
The problem is their JB versions don't have much added yet. So you'd have to flash their ICS version to see a fully loaded rom.

Noted. It sounds interesting. It's just that it makes my head spin sometimes, all the possibilities I guess we have to wait until a good JB rom shows up. However, isn't it slightly annoying you have to reflash the whole time to get the newest builds etc? I just don't see myself doing that the whole time

I am getting a nexus Monday. Right now I have a note. I have been reading the last coupledays to try and catch up but maybe I have missed something. Isn't there already good jellybean roms out already? Like Paranoid Android?

Alot of roms use Rom Manager or Goo Manager to host or link to their roms, with goo manager you can update most roms like an ota update when ever the dev updates the rom on Goo.im , same holds true with Rom Manager though i dont recall which website is used.
As far as both CyanogenMod and AOKP you can use these applications so that you dont have to search for the latest and greatest, just hit a button telling the application to check for updates and if there is one it applies it for you and phone updates nice and easy, of course you have to let the phone reboot to recovery and what not but the entire process becomes automated.

No not at all. Before jelly bean, I just flashed a loaded aokp and ran it for months and months. No need to upgrade. Currently JB roms need to be merged but once they are finished just flash one and go live life using the extra functions. If you are looking for a hobby then yes flash each week.
And as mentioned, most of the time you can just flash the rom update just like an OTA and you don't lose anything. Its just like an official ota update.

So I want to ask what advantages or better functions would make me want to upgrade? Maybe better device support? I do notice that my wifi drops off a lot but I also have friend's with the SIII stock and they have the same issue.

These are just the main bullet points IMO there is no reason to stick with an old outdated OS. I used CM7 until ICS came out officially for our device. CM7 is based off GB which first came out in 2010! If you're wary of custom roms at least update officially and enjoy the most of android.

If your into flashing roms there are many stable ones running Google Now on ICS 4.0.4 if you are just looking for updated google apps. JB isn't officially out for out phones yet so the devs have done a good job of porting roms so we can use JB if you want to. I would check the threads on JB roms and decide which is best for you.

yeah. just make a backup and play around. If you are on cm7 i recommend upgrading to cm10.1, it only gets better.
