I'm (obviously) having severe difficulty trying to figure out how to install a custom recovery (specifically TWRP).
Instructions here just say "Install using your existing recovery like you would any other zip.". What does that even mean?? How does one use the existing recovery to install a zip?
When placed in root of internal or external SD, when I try to "apply an update" from stock recovery I get an error about verification failed. Same error if I rename it to update.zip. There's no option to turn verification off.
If I try to use GooManager it says successful, but then when I try to boot (vol up + pwr + home) it just takes me to the stock recovery. My device isn't rooted, maybe that matters?
Instructions here call upon a command that doesn't even exist—install zip from sdcard. Wrong device model?
I didn't have this kind of trouble on any other device (OG EVO, EVO 3D, Optimus V, TF300T). What am I supposed to do to install this recovery? I'd like to "use my existing recovery like I would any other zip"...any idea how to accomplish this?
You need to be rooted to use goomanager.
Click on your second link and there is a section called "ODIN flash method," follow those directions

Go get the drivers on the samsung website.
I used the ToolKit for the S3 to install the drivers and you don't need to have your phone plugged in to install them. Here is the link to the ToolKit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665.
Are you able to get your phone in download mode at all?
Belive me, I tried all kinds of methods to install the drivers and it's failing to install them. The drivers just don't want to be installed so I can't transfer the rom into the sd card and since I deleted the mediaprovider.apk, I can't download stuff either.

Yes. But their are several options to re root and install cwm. I personally use twrp but the toolbox is the easiest method in my opinion to do it all for you.
Toolkit- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
TWRP- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1793224
Edit: if you have a backup saved onto your SD card then you should be able to restore it once you get cwm on. Your backups from cwm will not work in twrp however unless you move them to the correct folder. Sdcard\twrp\BACKUPS.

For those that are tired of checking and waiting or playing the date game. See the last post in link below and be sure to thank reinbeau for hosting the file:

Note: There are two ways to apply this update. The method I recommend requires that you be rooted.
Method 1:
Download the update zip file from the link that is referenced in above post. Root your phone and use root explorer to copy to /cache. Once copied; do full unroot, reboot into recovery, flash from cache, then reboot and enjoy 4.1.2.
Another note: Just to clarify, this update file is for stock 4.1.2 that is sent via OTA. Also, I suggest to unroot before installing the update because it will break root. You can root again using the exynos exploit after applying the update. Also, this process does require stock recovery!
Method 2:
If you do not want to root your phone. You can save the update.zip on your external sdcard and apply from there but by doing so I believe it will wipe your device. By updating from cache, I was able to update my wife's phone without it being wiped clean.

That's because this has not been released to Kies. If you were on stock rom and recovery, your status should show normal and it should show as official when you boot into download mode.
Also, if this was not official, you wont be able to flash this using stock recovery since it checks the signature for the file and it would have failed signature verification.

I tried recovery (volume up+home+power). I left buttons pressed and it only shows NOTE II splash screen then blanck then the screen again every 10 or so seconds.. never gets into recovery mode. It boot normally if I just press power button, and it goes into odin if I do VOL down +home+power. Any ideas why recovery is not working?

First of all you need to get into recovery mode, not download mode. To get into recovery you hold Volume up+Home button+Power button. You should only hold this three button combo until the screen flashes with the splash screen then immediately let go.

I was copying the file with root explorer.
I mentioned the "download mode " screen just to give a picture of the phone behavior(what is working vs what was not), did not meant to cause confusion there.
I have a new problem now as mentioned in my last post
I an attempt to get into recovery and clear the cache, I read in a forum that I could get into recovery via GOOMANAGER. I installed it and used "reboot to recovery " and now phone is stuck in ENLESS LOOP of the "samsung NOTE 2" screen.
I cannot make it boot normally now.I think the phone is stuck trynig to get into recovery similar to the manual way described before (when I press UP+HOME+POWER to get into recovery phone only looped samsung screen). HOw can I break the loop ?
The only screen working right now is ODIN (DOWN +HOME+POWER).
Go to sammobile and download the stock rom then flash via odin.

I'm not understanding how to do this. My device is a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Bell version 317 which I understand is the same as AT&T. I have unlocked and rooted my device on 4.1.1 and have Root explorer installed. Downloaded the update link and copied that file into the /cache folder....unrooted via superuser. When I try to get in2 recovery it is successful but I don't know what to do from there.....there's an option to format cache which I'm assuming will delete everything in that folder.
Also, I cannot install the zip via external sd card which the update is also on
Any help?

Happy New Year
First attempt at custom ROM, heard great things about All Star Rom - going straight for the v6! Unless told not to ... LOL
Have a rooted device, with latest TWRP recovery 2.3.3.1-hercules .tar flashed.
Have v6 and All-Star 4.2 custom gapps downloaded.
Copy of instructions for reference sake:
TWRP recovery recommended!
- wipe data
- wipe system
-(Use Darkside Super wipe if still on cwm 5.0.2.7 or below)
- flash rom
- flash All-Star 4.2 gapps
- wipe cache/ dalvik cache.
- reboot and wait 10 mins
- reboot and wait 1 minute
- Grant Superuser permissions for Switchme
- set up device.
- Initiate the CPU sleeper app
- (Highly Recommended) ENJOY!
Booting into TWRP recovery,
I don't specifically have a "wipe data" option, I want to be very thorough here.
Under "Wipe" I have Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, ... and System.
Quick answer? Thanks.
Hey, happy new years justaguy705. Nice to see you asking questions again.
To answer your question, the option where you see "Factory Reset" is the exact same as "Wipe data". Cheers!

Unless you have a recovery system already. You will need a computer to install a recovery system such as TWRP 2.3.3.0 to your phone through Odin (PC application).

Doesn't being rooted means he rooted himself via a recovery, unless he flashed stock rom again. In which it would wipe his recovery.

Make sure your phone is off and not connected to a USB cable. Press and hold the "volume up/volume down" keys and then press the power button until you feel a vibrate and the screen turns on. After that you should be in recovery mode and it will say the version you are using. If you have a CWM recovery version greater than 6.0 you should be able to flash a ROM through your phone.

To flash TWRP on to your phone and you still do not have access to a computer, you can try using the Mobile Odin app on the Play store as android88 had mentioned above (however, the app is around $5.00 if you're willing to purchase it). Otherwise, flashing the recovery system through Odin using a computer is the way to do it.

Well you can only get into download mode. So you need to install a custom recovery using odine. CWM is short for clockwork mod recovery. Find a how to and install cwm using odine.

If you have a computer download a Rom of your liking then install meaning find the file on your sd card then flash it? I recommend something close to the stock Rom then try new ones btw make a back up of your stock rom!!!!!! P.s. Look at YouTube for tutorials on how to?

To be more clear.
You said you can't boot into recovery. You can only boot into download mode. What download mode means is that you have to install cwm from a computer using odine. You connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable. Boot your phone into download mode. Open odine on your PC select the cwm odine file and push it to your phone. Disconnect your phone from your pc. Then you can put a ROM on your exSDcard and boot into recover and install the ROM.
Do a search on xda on how to install cwm using odine. I'm not going to write how to do it here cause you can search and do it your self. Good luck

I cant seem to find an updated guide with files to root and install a custome recovery on the sprint note 2 with 4.3 can someone help me find a link or get me the files etc?
Thanks
Recovery
I went to cyanogenmods website and ran the installer as directed. That installed cyanogenmod and rooted the device automatically, then you can download and flash any of the other custom ROMs on this site.
I rooted 4.3 with allinone toolkit clicking older variation and worked fine

My note 2 is blocking the cyanogenmod installer. It says unartherized access to a secured area on your phone without authorization has been blocked.
I'm stumped just got this phone and it is a pain to root

Do this
1. Boot into download/bootloader mode.
2. Connect to pc and use odin to flash twrp. Make sure you uncheck reboot and flash twrp in the pda slot.
3. Once flashed pull battery and disconnect from pc.
4. Press vol+ menu power buttons while inserting battery (yes it is difficult but can be done)
5. Now in recovery perform factory reset.
6. Flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36388145
7. Now reboot it will act/look weird but dont worry this is normal. It will reboot and take a long time to boot.
Now you are on stock mc2 (no knox anymore). Root using cf autoroot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33278464
Now use odin once again and flash your recovery again. Now you are rooted and have a custom recovery. Oh and you have a working phone again.

Before I do all of that...I discovered I can boot into TWRP and updated it to the newest version. Then I installed the cyanogen nightly onto the phone. Everything seemed to be working ok except I couldn't get any phone signal but wifi worked. I tried loading the dirty unicornes rom and the same thing happened . I then flashed cm 10.1 and the phone worked for calls but the asop keyboard kept crashing and couldn't login to the wifi network. I tried several installs with factory resets with the same results. If I follow the directions you listed will I be able to install these roms and the phone work for calls or am I missing another piece of the puzzle?

Look for it in the development thread. The op will have a link. Use 6.07.9 version and make sure it has a zip extension not md5.
