Brick? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Idk if i did a full or soft brick i just went to EXTREMEPERIA Z v2 all went well did everything then i suddenly put LeanKernel v2.9 then i choose to reboot the system and it didnt show anything + if a press the power button it vibrates and shows nothing i cant access TWRP and i cannot also access download mode

Does your computer recognize your phone?

i just plug in my phone to the laptop and it created a sound but on the phone still black screen
no led light also
ADD: it seems i can access TWRP halfway it wont let me in

I can tell u one thing i have multiple threads asking for help i just did the same thing. You will find alot of xda members who will laugh and bash with no help whatsoever and some will just say jtag is only option! None will really take time and go into indepth guide to help. But i will offer what i know thus far .
Plug into pc if you get a message at bottom saying Qb something means it isnt being recognized by the pc its toast ..dead ...wiped bootloader 100% gone .Jtag is only option at that point, cost is 60$ to save a 500$ phone
FIRSTLY You can try to buy or make a usb jig to force dload mode cost 1$ to make it atleast try before spending 60$, use three 100kohm half watt 5 percent resistors .You can find them at radioshack twist the gold end stripe to brown end stripe and so on until u have 3 looped and you will end up with two leads after its done.
In the end you will jump pin 4and5 on a usb plug end you will need to spare and cut a good usb end the pins will be two furthest end pins
Google for a diagram of what pins to jump if succesful in 3 seconds u will be in dload mode and then safe to flash stock t999 tar file to fix

I don't think it's bricked at all. I think you flashed a TouchWiz rom and tried to flash an AOSP kernel on top of it. If the phone is unresponsive, flash stock firmware (or root66) with Odin. Then you can flash your rom again.

i just got to the TWRP and i did a FULL WIPE and i wont put a custom kernel..i thought my phone is dead..*phew* almost got a heart atk.

We posted at the same time I explained where you went wrong. It's safe to flash kernels, you just need to be careful about which version you are flashing. And I think most of us have been in a position where we didn't how we were going to fix our phones, but figured something out

i'll note that, for now i'll stick to STOCK kernel

any suggestion what kernel suites the XTREMEPERIA Z? if i want to go for a custom kernel.

The kernel threads are in the Original Dev forum. I think most of the big players for our device have AOSP and TouchWiz kernels. Just be careful - you need a 4.1 TouchWiz kernel.
This is ktoonsez kernel: http://www.mediafire.com/?1hdtn46pownyynj (Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871946). We can flash ATT kernels.

I can't tell enough people how many times this lil jig has save many Samsung s phone from vibrant to S2 , S3
It was the best $12.00 I have ever spend..

would faux kernel be ok with this rom?

Is there a 4.1 TouchWiz build for it?

yes cuz it says: "NOTICE: This is COMPATIBLE with ALL Samsung Rooted Stock and Custom ROMs"
thanks for the help

For some weird reason, people keep putting "stock" labels on ROMs and kernels that are TouchWiz.

Stock condition is factory condition. These phones aren't coming out of the factory with AOSP on them. TouchWiz is stock on many consumer devices.
Putting AOSP on the S3 is "aftermarket" not stock because you're not getting it that way from the factory.
"Stock Android" can be used to refer to the Android OS that comes out of Google's OSP, but it's not the stock ROM for any of the S3s and not for plenty of other phones.

Thanks, that was blatantly obvious. My point was that it should not be referred to it as such.

Legitimately bricked my phone, just want an expert opinion

Running viperROM 5, went to clear my battery stats and hit clear dalvik on accident without realizing it. No big deal, went to boot up phone and it hung at the samsung screen for over 10 minutes so I just thought I would flash back to stock and reflash the ROM. The original reason I went to wipe battery stats was to calibrate my battery, which was almost dead. I switched to a spare that I thought was full, started odin, left the room, and came back to odin saying FAILED. Phone is completely unresponsive, the charge light will not even come on when I plug it into the wall or laptop. The computer does recognize when I plug it into the computer but it doesn't know what it is. Gonna sell it for parts on ebay unless someone here knows something I don't, thanks in advance =/
Even though Odin failed... cant you still get into download mode ?
if you can i recommend using any cable other than the stock one
I dont think your developing anything here so i would say this will get moved to the appropriate thread.
Your battery died. Odin consumes a great deal of battery power. Unfortunately, it failed so you can not charge your battery through your phone. If you get a new battery or charge your battery exteranlly, I bet you can get into download mode again and odin

This is what I was hoping to hear--I'll give it a try, thanks!
Sorry this is in the wrong place, not sure where it should have gone instead >.>
I have heard, though never tried myself so take it as the unfounded rumor that it is, that it is possible to get the phone to boot in some fashion with the battery out of it, then insert the battery while it is on to "jump start" the charging.
I hope I never have to try it because it sounds like it has lots of potential for problems, but if your phone is well and truly dead what do you have to lose?

This actually worked! I can get into download mode, although I don't know if the battery is really charging or not. Either way I'm in good shape, I just don't understand why neither battery would boot into download mode when one of them had about 10% left.
Also this clearly belongs in Q and A, sorry!
Even without the battery as long as your phone is plugged in with the USB it should go into Download mode ... i think
Everything is back up and running, thanks everyone =)

Re-setting binary counter to stock :-)

Like the international SGS2, the E4GT has an internal counter that increments every time you flash a kernel, ROM, etc.
I'd heard that a "usb jig" could be used to reset that counter to zero, and was curious so I bought one.
Sure enough...
1) turn off the phone
2) insert the jig into micro-USB port
3) press power button
4) Voila! the display then shows "Custom binary download: No" (where it used to show a count)
See link: Photos are from another xda user who used a jig on his SGS2 but the resulting screen display is the same for E4GT (except ours, of course, displays D710 at top): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16179541&postcount=10
The jig itself is tiny, photo below.
Edited to add: Thanks to Daneurysm for confirming that using jig also gets rid of yellow triangle on boot screen (see his post on page 2).
Edited 10/4: Also see Blownco's video showing how it works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mcsEePWpQw

Even if there is a secondary counter, the likelyhood that sprint would look for that is slim. Sprint replaces the phone not Samsung

Best ROM for a mother that loves the stock phone?

Has complete stock functionality but subtlety fixes any bugs that would be obvious to the casual user.
My mother's GS2 definitely needs some finishing touches that Samsung couldn't crank out.
Can somebody point me to the best stock-ish ROM in this forum?
Thanks to the people who make good suggestions.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I would say Calkulins rom. Has the stock look and feel but is superior in every category when it comes to the stock rom. I feel it's how the phone should come stock.
I would suggest a stock 2.6 ROM, SpeedMod kernel and Jkays Deluxe.
Also check out CheckROM if you really wanna go down the route of a new ROM

please do NOT do any of that. you will probably brick the phone. use calks. its really good and pretty much a stock feel. 2.8.1 is the one u want. the guy above me was suggesting a rom not for the epic. remember just because its an S2 doesn't mean we can flash their roms. stay in our dev section or the phone will likely be done for good.
Your going to get alot of different opinions on this topic, but I am going with Calkulin's on this one.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
hopefully me chiming in will make your choice easier. I went with Caulkins rom too for my wife. She likes the stock feel and it has that and like everyone else said its superior to stock. I upgraded my modem to el29 which has been the best for me. also if you have gps issues flash the gps driver.
One more vote for Calkulin's Rom. Stock looking with great battery life because of the battery scripts it runs. You don't need to know anything about the scripts, they just run in the background. There are also some really great themes available if she wants to make it pretty. Try flashing different modems until you find the best one. Personally I've had the best luck with EL26 but everyone's results are different.
For a stock look I'd say Calks as well. Or you could just root her phone, add Titanium Backup and add and subtract from the stock rom itself........
Yup flash Calkulin and your done. Don't bother with any weird combinations.

Holy hell guys, thanks for the quick response. Now I just have to convince my mom to let me get my hands on that phone of hers! Haha, thanks again.
I'll vote just root what she has and make simple mods. If you do any type of custom rom, anything that goes wrong, you'll have to be her tech support because she'll blame whatever you installed as the issue, true or not.
Same here. Stock + rooted.

this is what I did for my wife when she first got the phone. Stock EK02, only rooted. I disabled CIQ, used titanium backup to freeze sprint bloatware, and disabled DRM.
I think for the EL29 update, i'll just flash Caulk's ROM (like what everyone is suggesting) so at least she'll have the battery scripts, modded camera app, 5 dock icons, bloatware removed, and little tweaks like that. I would just use titanium back up to make periodic backups to her external SD card.
My vote (which probably doesn't mean very much as a noob but I just like to be different) goes to BlazerROM. I love the theme and she shouldn't feel particularly lost coming from the stock ROM. I'm running it currently and it's been very good to me.

I get about 3 days out of my battery before the meter hits 30% with moderate use (checking facebook a few times a day, Words With Friends, Music player for short trips in the car, etc.) which I think is pretty good considering I always have WiFi on at home (turn it off while travelling unless I know there's a hotspot around). I am extremely anal about killing processes when I'm done with them though, so a casual user may not see the same results.

Any hope for this bricked phone?

I was trying to install a new kernel for my Epic 4g so I could possibly upgrade or get rid of the ****ty theme that came with the phone I bought on ebay. Whilst doing so through Odin I believe it said Failed and now my phone won't boot into any mode.
Is there any hope for this phone or anyway I can take it to a sprint dealer and possibly con them into getting a replacement?
Have you tried battery cpr? Leaving it plugged in holding the buttons for download mode(1 and the power button) and popping in and out the battery?
Get a better cable that's probably why it failed. Also huh? Flashing a new kernel for a new theme??? Makes no sense bro speak some english

Any suggestions what I can do? I have TEP so I was thinking of just taking it in.

Remove the battery and SD then replug into your PC and reboot download mode. The reason people brick like this is repartitioning with only a kernel or checking bootloader.

omg. I was about to head out to Sprint when I tried for the 99th time to put it in download mode. and it popped up! (battery only)
I thought for sure this thing was dead. How is this possible if I was doing the EXACT same thing repeatedly, eventually it works?
It appears to be some type of reset that takes place and sometimes only letting it sit for awhile will fix it. This is why some people think the magic button works.

You removed the param among other things. This caused key combinations to not render if a normal boot started. The one time it did work it was a direct boot into download mode. (I have no idea about my theory and am talking out of my @$$.) Your phone also could have been low on power.

Hah! Maybe the "battery CPR" actually did something. I tried so many times between last night and today and finally after a long session of battery CPR, I let it sit for ~15 minutes, then tried -> No battery, connect USB, download mode: NOTHING -> Disconnect USB, replace battery, download mode: SUCCESS!
Very strange.
Back in action on AOKP + Nyan colonel!

Do I need to unroot to trade my phone it?

I have that jump program and feel like getting the GS5. I got this GS4 about 6 or so months ago and if I remember correctly (which I don't) I used odin to root it.. Had it rooted for a couple months then decided to put a rom on which was Wicked 5.0 or something. About 2 months ago I put wicked 9.1 on.
I'm pretty sure I saved a recovery before even putting the first wicked rom on, but WTF is up with the way it saves the files, maybe someone can help with this image, but what is the oldest date of these recoveries ?

If I was to go back to just the stock recovery but still rooted, would a t-mobile rep know this? and if they did would it be a problem?
If I did get back to the stock recovery, could I unroot it? I remember buying a triangle app or something ,that reset the flash counter on this phone? does that ring any bells? lol
Thanks
What version are you running and did you acquire KNOX at any time?

Yes, you need to unroot if you want to trade your phone and also make sure you didn't trip Knox.

Look at the jump contract. I looked at it briefly when I signed up for it. If i remember correctly there are 3 conditions to exchange your phone.
1. no water damage
2. screen isn't cracked
3. it turns on
I didn't see any sort of refusal of service if the phone is rooted.

The guy told me yesterday that it can't be rooted, he said "we will check" all night last night till like 4am, I was reading and working on getting the GS4 into shape and ready to go.. I followed those directions above that I posted the link for and it worked awesome..
I go and trade my phone in today the guy just made sure it went to the setup screen after you factory reset it.. That was it, lol.
Now its on the GS5 this thing is a beast so far, I love that I can wash it I dropped it into my pool (3 feet deep) for a minute or so and it held up just fine! put it under running water same thing, no water inside the battery compartment! Sure its not worlds better than the GS4, but I don't think I'm gonna rom this one, I will root it eventually because I tether about 15+ gigs a month Well, later all, hope to see you follow me over to the GS5 forums one day.. or maybe wait until the GS6?
To anyone's knowledge, has anyone ever been refused a JUMP upgrade due to a tripped KNOX counter?

It's hard to prove a negative...but I read this board daily. I read every topic regarding trade in adns warrenties.
I have never seen anyone talk about being denied a trade in on XDA due to KNOX.
they don't check
The clerk handling returns/exchange is instructed to check just 2 points:
The phone powers up
The IMEI/ESN is the same as what you claim, they check behind the battery, they don't even check to confirm the software IMEI matches the sticker,

As far as I can tell it's a "no" for now. Anyone aware is this is going to persist or are we still on a "not right now but but they could start checking for KNOX any day now" status?
I have a GS4 and I don't think I'll upgrade until winter at the earliest... But I REALLY REALLY want to root my phone.
What version of android are you using? If you were on 4.3 or lower you could do something like this:
